Fixtures

What the FA Cup fifth round results will mean for the Blank Gameweek 31 picture

The schedule for Blank Gameweek 31 will be determined by the results of the FA Cup fifth round this week.

The quarter-finals of that competition clash with the Premier League’s final set of fixtures before the March international break, so any top-flight club progressing to the last eight of the FA Cup will blank in FPL.

Ahead of this week’s cup ties, we had only two Premier League fixtures definitely going ahead in Blank Gameweek 31:

Burnley v Watford
Wolverhampton Wanderers
v Bournemouth

One of Tottenham Hotspur v West Ham United or Norwich City v Everton will definitely go ahead in Gameweek 31, as Jose Mourinho and Daniel Farke’s sides meet each other in the FA Cup on Wednesday and one of those two clubs will be eliminated.

The ties in the FA Cup fifth round are as follows:

Monday 2nd March

Portsmouth v Arsenal

Tuesday 3rd March

Chelsea v Liverpool
Reading v Sheffield United
West Bromwich Albion v Newcastle United

Wednesday 4th March

Leicester City v Birmingham City
Sheffield Wednesday v Manchester City
Tottenham Hotspur v Norwich City

Thursday 5th March

Derby County v Manchester United

Therefore, at the time of writing, we can still have anything between two and seven blanks in Gameweek 31.

If Sheffield United see off Reading, then we will know the full fixture list for Gameweek 31 even before Manchester United face Derby County on Thursday.

Blanks will be confirmed in Gameweek 31 if the following events occur:

GW31 Premier League fixtureA blank will happen if the following happens in the FA Cup fifth round:
Spurs v West HamSpurs beat Norwich
Chelsea v Man CityChelsea beat Liverpool or Man City beat Sheff Wed
Man Utd v Sheff UtdMan Utd beat Derby or Sheff Utd beat Reading
Newcastle v Aston VillaNewcastle beat West Brom
Norwich v EvertonNorwich beat Spurs
Liverpool v Crystal PalaceLiverpool beat Chelsea
Leicester v BrightonLeicester beat Birmingham
Southampton v ArsenalArsenal beat Portsmouth

The maximum of seven blanks will happen in Gameweek 31 if Manchester City, Leicester, Arsenal, Liverpool and Newcastle all win their FA Cup fifth-round ties and at least one of Manchester United or Sheffield United also progress.

Looking further ahead to Gameweek 34, which clashes with the FA Cup semi-finals, there are again only two Premier League matches currently confirmed as going ahead:

Everton v Southampton
West Ham United
v Burnley

The results of the FA Cup fifth round and quarter-finals will determine which of the other scheduled Premier League games will survive.

There’ll be fewer blanks in Gameweek 34 (a maximum of four) and, given that there is a free midweek after that set of fixtures, it is widely assumed that 2019/20’s first ‘big’ Double Gameweek will fall then, with outstanding fixtures from Gameweek 28/31/34 needing to be rearranged.

As many as eight scheduled Gameweek 34 fixtures could be confirmed as going ahead this week, although that would require a succession of cup shocks.

More details of the prospective blanks and doubles can be read below:

    Have exact money for Traore to Saka and Vardy to Auba, but for a -4!

    Do it before Vardy drops and I can’t?

      Not a fan of a -8, especially to get rid of some perfectly good (albeit not perfect) assets that should probably play.

    I Was all set to do Firmino -> Auba for free this week, but that that blank 31 is frustrating. Given the potential doubles post 32 should I do it anyway and just carry him for 31? Firmino has nice fixtures but has done zip for me in 3 GWs now

    Getting to that time of season where you need to include planned chip strategy when asking any questions about transfers. Nice to see some variation in plans forming, hopefully that will last past these FA Cup games.

      Seems a lot are looking to get through it with FTs, but probably dependent on how these cup games go. Very unlikely I will do anything other than FH, team just isn't suited to anything else.

      Really don’t want to FH 31 as the fixtures will be pants. But the amount of surgery required to transfer for and then after means People will have to out of necessity. Particularly those already burning their WC...like me. It would of been nice to have this dgw 29 for city. If Liverpool lose it might be a case of going in with 8-9 players and fh the first dgw. I’d much prefer the gains you could make with that strategy.

          Would not ditch Ings, but I do think Traoré out is a move to make. I've no midfielders on my radar currently. Have Jorgihno suspended for 2, but might hold him still as he's a penalty taker. Maybe ship him out for bench fodder? Bank for when you need a BIG spend?

          Tierney on his way back, so it's uncertain if Saka will be in the starting eleven (I think).

          That being said, they should find a spot for Saka in that team somehow; he's one of Arsenal's few in-form players.

        The move you'd make for the DGW:

        1) Martial + Robbo -> KDB + 4.3 def
        2) Martial + Maddison -> KDB + Saka
        3) Martial + Ings -> KDB + Nketiah

        1. TAT
          • 6 Years
          4 years, 2 months ago

          With the uncertainty with Nketiah's playing time (played in the cup tonight), I'd go with 1 or 2. Tierney is back soon though, so it remains to see if that will have an impact on Saka's playing time.

          Aguero, Mahrez, Sterling, Ederson, Pepe, Bellerin, Leno. Maybe... I’d be scared not having many DGW players. Aguero ruined my life last season.

            Dont see it like that. No city player likely to start x 2

            And worth taking hit for arsenal?? Prob not

              I was being a bit tongue in cheek. However I do think if these two teams were part of a larger DGW people would be looking at 3/4 players from them (as part of a free hit for example). I think most will ignore them in GW29 because it’s inconvenient, not so much they don’t rate them.

            There's gonna be a lot of rotation at City for sure with their run of fixtures. I'm perfectly ok with just owning KDB.

        I’m surprised with all the geeky stuff that’s posted around here no one has yet recorded/proved what the best chip strategy is. We’ve now had 3/4 (?) seasons of them and the blank and double week’s are fairly similar each season. Anyone care to do the hard work for me? 🙂

          I don't think they're similar at all. Last year it was BGW31/DGW32/BGW33/DGW35, very closely spaced together. This year it's more like BGW28/BGW31/DGW34/DGW37, spaced farther apart with most of the blanks over before the biggest doubles. It seems like that could lend itself to a very different chip strategy. Last year would have been extremely hard to navigate without WC; this year not so much.

          Although even so, Sam Bonfield has claimed that last year people who played January wildcards did better than people who saved it until late. I would have thought she has written an article about it, but only remember hearing it on podcasts and not seeing that article.

            I disagree. Still hard to navigate without WC

        Martial, VVD, Maddison
        ====>
        Fernandes, Pepe, Bellerin

        For - 4

        Got the exact amount of cash for the moves. Will give me KDB Pepe Auba and Bellerin for the DGW.
