How Aubameyang compares to other FPL midfielders after positional change

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£12.0m) will be a midfielder in Fantasy Premier League next season following the game’s relaunch.

The move comes about following Aubameyang’s half-season spell on the left flank, with Mikel Arteta’s appointment as Arsenal manager in December signalling a change of role for the Gabon international in the Gunners’ attack.

The reclassification further swells the premium options available to us in the middle of the park, with Marcus Rashford (£9.5m) also making the move to ‘FPL midfielder’ and Kevin De Bruyne (£11.5m) and Bruno Fernandes (£10.5m) rising considerably in price.

How does Aubameyang compare with the other heavy hitters after his positional switch, then?

Our Members article below delves into the data.

If some of the cheap players carry on their post lockdown form we could have some real bargains. Foden, Antonio, Wood for example

Aguero at 10.5 is going under the radar somewhat. Got him as a lone striker in a 4-5-1 at the moment. Might switch up to a 4-4-2 if I fancy one of the cheaper strikers

Trouble with Kun is you need better than 2 x 4.5 strikers for when he is benched for Jesus.
You can get away with it with a Kane because he’ll play every game when fit.

quite tricky pulling together a squad, once you have TAA, Salah/Mane, Fernandes & KdB/Sterling it’s a real tough job ... need to box clever this year

I have seen a few comments like this but I think the 4.5 defenders makes it possible. FPL have been very kind this year. You could have 4 premiums.

that is where I am drifting, still doesn’t make it easy.

Normally I would have 2 premium defenders plus 3 x 4.5 but struggling this year.

I think flexible strategies with multiple hits will be key this year rather than static team selections and patience

Taa + 4*4.5 (Taylor Vinaigre Dallas Thomas/Justin) makes it easier to fit 3 big hitting Midfielders mate.

With over 24 hrs to digest the fpl prices, here are some of my first few thoughts.

    1. Defence + 0.5 = Attack: When considering formation, your bench fodder in mid/fwd line is min 4.5 while in defence it is 4.0. So when comparing 3-5-2 vs 4-4-2 for eg, your 6.5mio defender (say VVD) will cost you the same as. 7.0 midfielder (say Grealish).

    2. Defence this year has lot of value: While everyone seems to acknowledge that TAA is incredible value, I have seen very few drafts of a double up with Robbo. Robbo has scored 197 pts avg over last 2 seasons. I can’t imagine any 7.5 mid matching that (except Greenwood, but we’ll get to that later). Similarly VVD, AWB, Doherty, Laporte if nailed all seem good value vs similarly priced attackers.

    3. Greenwood is a bargain: Post lockdown Man Utd were on a song and Greenwood, Bruno, Martial & Rashford all seemed to share the spoils. Greenwood at 7.5 seems great value with everyone else 9mio+, provided Sancho stays away from Utd.

    4. Vinagre over Doherty: With Jonny injured and out for a while, Vinagre at 4.5 is a total bargain and 1.5 saved vs Doherty seems worth it.

    5. Keep an eye over Chelsea: I have huge respect for Lampard given what he did with the Chelsea squad last year after transfer ban. Now with Werner & Ziyech I have no doubt Chelsea will be a goal scoring machine. Werner could be the bargain 9.5 premium that KDB was last season or Salah was in 17/18.

    6. Transfers in Defence vs Attack: I’ve heard a lot of people say that they don’t like to waste their transfers over defenders. While I haven’t actually checked the stats, empirically I feel defender clean sheet rate goes up more over favourable fixtures than attackers goals/assist stats.

    7. Battle of the 8.5s: Mahrez, Ings, Pulisic & Jiminez all offer incredible value at 8.5 with all ending between 175-200 pts last season (except Pulisic who was injured a lot, I’m sure ppt would be similar). However only Jiminez had done it the previous year as well with 181 pts in 2018/19 campaign. This consistency places him higher in my watch list over others although fixtures matter equally.

Agree that Vinagre is a bargain if they don't sign anyone but I'm not sure he replaces Doherty, he's a different class to every non-Liverpool defender in the game.

      Great sum up.

I'm wondering to get grealish/mount + doherty or robbo + 6m mid, but could not find anyone interesting.

Greenwood, I remember people said he over achieved last season? Or not?

I like Chelsea attacking attitude, but not sure 100% Werner will start so I'm leaning to Vardy.

      1. The Ejiptian King
        • 5 Years

Some people were saying Greenwood overachieved because of his low xG but he's a lethal, two footed finisher that can score from distance so that'll probably continue.

      2. Goonsquad245
        • 8 Years

He did over achieve last season based on expected goals, even adjusting for good finishing it was honestly ridiculous (he’d be a 10x better finisher than Messi if he kept it up through his career)

He is, however, exceptional value at 7.5m, which is what I think the crux of your question was

Point 6 interests me, I was wondering whether if you have the luxury of spare transfers, targetting clean sheets is better than targetting goals. I would like to see some output from someone that can be bothered to work it out.

    ASM 5.5 bargain?

I remember him doing really well in restart, but he only scored 3 goals, 4 assists all season.

      Why would they sign Grealish?

I honestly feel they only need backup players now. They have built a starting XI similarly to how Pool did. Now they can either go down the City route of spending lots to rotate (Ole doesn't rotate) or the Pool route of having dedicated backups (Ole showed this with Ighalo + Martial, just needs an Ighalo replacement and backup wingers)

That is my fear also. Therefore I am not certain to start with Doherty, his price won't rise fast and may wc him in later with more itb.

    To play every GW

    A ) Doherty and Martial in a 4-4-2

    or

    B) Vinagre in Bruno in a 4-5-1

    Pope, Button
    TAA, VVD, Taylor, Vinagre, Lamptey,
Aub, De Bruyne, Rashford, Greenwood, Soucek
    Wood, Antonio, Davis

    Good to go?

I guess they're not connected but seems strange for the 'scout' to do an article on Soucek and then they price him at 5.0

    I'm going predominantly big hitterless:

    Pope (Farrel)

    Robertson, Doherty, Saliba (C.Taylor, Ayling)

De Bruyne, Rashford, Son, Greenwood, Foden

Martial, Antonio (Brewster - if he gets a loan elsewhere)

Why would you get Brewster... The whole point of the fodders is that it doesn't block key slots. If you need a triple Pool at some point he'll be a real annoyance.

I wouldn't get a defender from gunners, no matter how cheap he is. At least not yet.

I reckon Saliba has a better ceiling than the rest and have more faith in Arteta than any of the sides I might pick up another 4.5 from.

Think I might stick to a none above 6.5 rule - Wood, Antonio, Mitro, Adams all have potential to plod along nicely

There are only 4 of them, two are Chelsea players who are not nailed and the others are both Toffees (Richarilson and DCL), the later may tempt me if the fixtures are good.

Since restart... 3 goals. 14 shots in the box. 2.94 xG non penalty, 6th among all midfielders last season which included Antonio who is now a forward.

The stats support him being a great pick.

He's a goal scorer cm/cdm. Doesn't get involved in every attack but he scores regularly with foot and head. Great signing by Wham.

    First draft:

    Ryan/Burron

    TAA - Taylor - Dallas - Douglas - Brantwaite

    Son - Willian - Salah - Foden
    Mitrovic - Werner - 4,0

If willian is a starter i think he can be good value.
Other options are to get a Chelsea man, but want Pulic.
Willian is also easy swap for Greenwood if United dont have game first week.

What if one of Auba/Sterling/Kdb/Mane/Bruno start scoring like crazy. Can't see a direct route to get them in without 3-4 transfers as you have distributed the funds all around.

    Best 5.5m mid?

Is it really ASM? Newcastle are really meh going forward. Saka is interesting, Daniel Podence, Armstrong, Harrison of Leeds?

Seems like there are a lot of good options and one of them is bound to be great. The question is which one....

    1. zes
      • 8 Years

Probably will pick the one of those with best fixtures

    2. Brosstan

      Armstrong imo. Shelvey overlooked too

Don't think any of them are bound to be great. Saka would have been possibly, but not now with Willian in the team.

At least one will be imo.

Podence has shown huge potential, Armstrong had great performances end of last season, and Harrison/Klich of Leeds I'm tipping at least one to get goals early.

Harrison over Klich. Klich takes shots but generally low quality.

I almost can't believe I'm saying this but I think I'd rather have Bamford than a 5.5 mid if they don't sign a striker, rather have Soucek than any of them though.

Leeds will sign a striker. Origi or Batshuayi have been mentioned and they would be good options considering I still expect chances to be created.

        He doesn't finish well,
XG of 36 goals, got 16 only.

I pick the lowest owned non-playing fodder always. Learned my lesson last year after I went with Greenwood and Button and both lost value. Guess that means I should pick another 4.0 keeper...
