What is FPL Upside Chasing and how can I implement it in 2020/21?

It turns out ‘Upside Chasing’ is in vogue these days – but how does it work and how can it help you to Fantasy Premier League success in 2020/21?

As a proponent of this strategy, I thought it would be a good idea to address this buzz-word and, at the same time, look at some of the numbers behind how it works.

It is a style of play that underpinned a successful 2019/20 campaign for me and there’s no reason why you can’t use a similar approach this time around.

So… how does it work? Let’s find out.

What is Upside Chasing?

How De Bruyne and Sterling compare as FPL assets for 2020/21?

When you’re faced with tough Fantasy decisions, Upside Chasing is when you pick the option that has the highest ceiling, the best chance of scoring you a massive points haul.

Crucially, Upside Chasing also means recalibrating your mind in terms of what you perceive to be a “high risk” move.

If there is merit in choosing a less popular player, that has a higher ceiling, backed up by eye-test and data, the only reason that choice could be a risk is if you were to pay attention to ownership and, to a certain extent, value (which we’ll talk about later).

Now, there is nothing wrong with paying attention to these factors. I certainly don’t ignore them completely but I would rather play FPL based on what I see on the football pitch and in the Members Area. If I started allowing myself to be mostly led by ownership percentages, I would take a long, hard look at myself in the mirror, I can tell you now.

I’m not saying that playing the percentage game is wrong; I do a fair bit of it. But you should not be scared of the ownership to the extent that it makes you act against your instinct when they are watching a game, catching some highlights on Match of the Day or executing a deep dive into the FFS Members Area

Simply put, Upside Chasing is about making sure I’m doing the fun (and right) thing rather than letting others dictate my game.

How did I implement Upside Chasing in 2019/20?

Knowing how Upside Chasing works is one thing. Understanding how to put it into practice on specific decisions is something else entirely.

Those of you who read this article last year will know how the performance of top players often varies depending on who the opponent is. Tracking this across a season is the key to understanding the part fixtures play in Upside Chasing.

I noticed early last season that there were a lot of big hitters and I couldn’t own all of them at the same time. This would lead to a high variance in points between Gameweeks.

I also noted that there were a lot of glue guys (set-and-forget options) in my team, primarily in the low to mid-price bracket and I held them for long parts of the season without spending transfers there. This was most of my defence and players like Raúl Jiménez (£8.5m) who just kept on delivering.

I loosely assumed that spending transfers in defence would lead to a net 15 to 20 point profit or loss over five to six Gameweeks.

I could attempt to make the same gain in a single Gameweek with high-impact big-hitter switching for captaincies primarily based on fixtures. This impact was even greater when the person I was captaining had low ownership.

This constant big-hitter switching based on fixtures is a risky strategy and you need to compromise on value for these players as well as not being afraid of ownership while doing the same.

It also a fair assumption to make that some players are not set-and-forget assets and will not maintain consistent form throughout the season as we saw with Mohamed Salah (£12.0m) during his first Liverpool campaign.

If that is the case, and you see a big hitter showcasing that kind of form throughout the season, you don’t need to move him.

Loosely put, this was the largely the thinking implemented last season but there are a lot more moving parts to it.

You don’t look at this as a hard and fast rule and should remain reactive to all the curve balls that FPL throws at you.

In fact, I might not even implement Upside Chasing this season as I strongly believe in having no rules or pre-conceived notions… although it is in my DNA, more often than not, to pick the high-ceiling option.

I realised while talking to Walsh on an FML FPL podcast appearance that it subconsciously stems from years of playing monthly FPL competitions where I used to take multiple hits at the end of the month and I got very used to having an ideal team on paper.

Anyway, enough subjective jabber for now. Let’s dive into the juicy numbers which may or may not validate the thinking behind big-hitter switching for the Upside Chasing theory. This section is for FFS Premium Members only.

What do you guys think the better strategy is?
A: moving big hitter set and forget more with mid price
B: Set and forget big hitters and move around your mid price

Set and forget the valie options and then move around the big hitters. There's too many there that I want to get a flavour of, including Mane and Sterling.

See the big hitters as a series of tasting courses, whilst the value is your bread and butter set and forget.

Depends on fixtures, the options you can move to, and the rest of your team.

Make the transfers you think will get you the most points over a number of weeks.

I tried with A at the end of last season and it did push my rank up, but I was more picking based off of big players form rather than fixtures

Depends how the season goes really. Could be that there are some great value players who you want to hang on to all season or could be that some big hitters are super consistent (KDB last season or Salah and Sanchez in past years) and its just better to hold onto them

      I’m planning on having
Salah l Auba l Son l Vardy l Jiménez to start and moving the cash around those
With City/Pool/Utd/Chelsea attack coming and and out as and when
      Armstrong and Ritchie being enablers

I think as AV says it's a mix. Some big hitters are more predictable than others (eg. Hazard was a nightmare), mid price more susceptible to fixtures etc.
I think you have to know your personality - LR is a shark and can pull off A but the current champion was a plodder and it worked for him.

Neither. It has to flexible and you have chase the big upside when there is one to be seen. I
Last season it was very important to get in form Ings and Vardy into your team fast and after that it was time to consider whether to take a hit for a premium C option.

I feel like having a cheap fourth mid is best for team structure at the beginning of the season. Seeing a lot of love for Soucek and ASM which I don't quite understand. I really like Podence of Wolves and Keita of Liverpool, both at 5.5. Bit punty but could pay off big time.

Podence will not be a regular starter so you will have to suffice with bench points. Same with Keita really, as a pool fan I hope he gets more game time but if we get Thiago then keita won't get into our strongest 11. I agree 5.5 look a decent price point, have gone with Armstrong for now, hope he keeps his place from last season and Saints continue their project restart form.

Don't really want much at that price as long as they start and get the odd attacking return, can always jump on good value players who may emerge from Leeds/ West brom etc but not sure which of their players will adapt best to the prem

If we get Thiago I have to disagree. Fabinho, henderson, Gini and Thiago would all be chosen ahead of him imo. Klopp likes to play Keita in easier fixtures so when he does play it could be against the lesser teams

Thing is, he needs to be playing week in, week out, and at this stage, it doesn't look likely Podence or Keita will be doing that. This is why Grealish was perfect for that spot for large periods last season.

I wonder how a planned mini wildcard strategy (3 transfers for - 4) for every 2 weeks would work? Might try it as would give flexibility to chase fixtures/bin injured players and allow to build value.

With the city and united blanks in GW1 is anyone else considering wc in GW2/3? I wouldn’t normally wc so early but it feels like an opportunity to have an extra free hit for the blank which allows you to build your squad properly going forward. The only downside I can think of is not having the opportunity to wc when the double GW eventually happens (assuming it does before Xmas)

If you use that wildcard early, then your team becomes a bit of a mess you’d struggle to sort it out

      1. Barns
        • 6 Years

That’s true but I feel there are enough reliable assets to hold and make single transfers to sort out any issues. I have TAA plus 4 4.5 at the back atm so this would be an area that could potentially need major surgery if I didn’t change with the wc.

For me it feels a bit early for gameweek 2 tbh but I can see the reasons some are considering it. I prefer to have a bit more info on players and gameweek 1 is not enough to judge players on for me.

      I’m doing it in GW3.
Ofc if my team does good, maybe will continue with hit or two, but I’m set on WC. Like the fixtures and can load team with my preferred choices.
Every season I used WC within first 4/5 GW - not because it was my strategy but I was forced.
I’m planing it this year 🙂

Tbh I always end up using mine earlier than intended, usually as a result of too many form players prices increasing who I don’t own. I think I may plan for gw3 but have a contingency in place to allow me to move to United/city assets without a wc if my team is performing.

    Kane

I've distilled 11 years of FPL mediocracy into this starting squad.

    I give you:
    - 2 big hitting captain options
    - pound for pound value in all other positions
    - a mid-priced mid and forward for bandwagon jumping
    - 5 (potentially 6) penalty takers
    - strong opening fixtures

    McCarthy
    TAA - KWP - Vinagre - Robertson
    Salah - JWP - Aubameyang
    Werner - Jimenez - Mitrovic

    Steer - Lindelof - Anguissa - Bissouma

It's all downhill once I start making transfers.

Nope, around GW7-8 to load the team with Manchester boys, double/triple LIV defense and get rid of Wolves assets.

Initially it was GW3 WC but couple of transfers solve the major problems like getting Kevin and Bruno, so I have decided to delay the WC and GW8-9 feels like a decent fixture shift.

Are you not going to be tempted by Bruno/Martial from GW2 onwards? Fair play to you if you have the patience to hold off.

I suspect 0.5m ITB to do Jimenez to Martial in GW2 might be worth factoring in as a plan B.

              That's ready 😉

2m in bank. 1.5 for Son to Bruno, extra 0.5 for Jimenez to Martial or any price changes.

Trying to optimise and see if I can benefit from BB as well as delay WC, not that easy but worth a shot.

And a strong bench means it will be easy to deal with any other surprise suspension or injury.

Looks fine on paper, unfortunately it never goes as plan 😆

Thanks mate. JWP is a bandwagon enabler, plus I like Southampton's opening fixtures.

Lindelof can be Coleman, Bellerin, Dier, Davies, Shaw - whoever, but I'd like a 5m defender placeholder.

        How are you shaping up?

          Fair

I'm still in tinkering stage, but at this:

          McCarthy
          TAA - VVD - Doherty - Vinagre - KWP
          Salah - Auba
          Werner - Jiminez - Mitrovic

          Steer - 4.5 x 3 - 1m ITB

PS How will Chesterfield get on this year? Is Maguire's brother still there?

Laurence, yep he's still here. I'll be honest, since we slipped out of the league I haven't been following them too closely. I live down in Berkshire now and don't travel to games. I just hope we can get back into league 2.

All really strong picks. I'd still try and find 0.5m to convert VVD into Robertson. Do you have plans for the 1m ITB?

It's affirming to see other players like yourself and Holmes with similar squads.

This team is about flexibility, minimizing transfers on low to mid price range players, and switching/swapping/hockey-cokey captaincy candidates ( or it could be miles from that). I won't be getting into details about every player, to make it as short as possible.

    GK: McCarthy | 4.0

I am not a fan of GK rotation, and I don't like to spend more than 8.5 on gk pair. McCarthy is one of the options there.

    DEF: TAA (7.5) Doherty (6.0) Vinagre (4.5) | Douglas (4.0) Ferguson (4.0)

Defense is more about structure rather than personnel, if you look the 4.5 and 4.0 players. Doherty has great opening fixtures, Wolves are great defense, and at 6.0 he could be a jump of point to Liverpool double up later. As much as I don't like the GK rotation, I also don't like/I am poor at playing 4.5 defs rotation, and as things stand Vinagre seems like a best option in that bracket. Also at the moment Leeds don't have CB, so in theory Douglas plays LB. But, big asterisk next to their names.

    MID: Auba (12.0) Salah (12.0) Pereira (6.0) Saint-Maximin(5.5) | Gordon (4.5)

Auba is expendable after the first two games, but those really look like his territory. Salah has decent first three games, but will I captain him in any of those? With Perira I try to pick undervalued player that can stay in my team little longer than 4-5 weeks and get occasional returns. ASM is good 5.5 option.

    FWD: Vardy (10.0) Jimenez (8.5) Mitrovic (6.0)

Pricing and also above all opening fixtures favor the forwards. There are many good options there so I prefer 3-4-3. Vardy is flat track bully with great first five fixtures, and he could go up to Kane or Aguero or down to 8.5 - 9.0. Concern is the Leicester form at the end of previous season. Jimenez is there for consistency and fixtures. Mitrovic, 6.0 and fixtures. But, do I want premium striker, or should that money be put in midfield as a placeholder for Bruno? Is GW3 too late to bring Bruno in, either on 2FT or good old mini wc 2FT+hit?

    Money in the bank: 1.0

He increased the number of predatory goals, also has penalties. He is probably the main issue in this team, and I could go Kane or Werner there, or without premium.

      2. Eze Really?

My thinking too. If a player finishes a season out of form and he is the age of Vardy, then there is reasonable doubt.

Likes: 1 mil in the bank. Perreira. the importance of a premium striker (I have Kane ATM)
Dislikes: Gordon for obvious reasons. Not cap Salah; unless he is a placeholder, then he has poor value with captaincy sometimes. Defense too thin on the ground IMO

Salah > Bruno gw 2 is on the cards. I agree on the defense, but I can't find anything I am satisfied at the moment.

Yeah. Auba and Salah will in the majority of teams before kick off. Maybe one of Perreira and St Maximan to give you opportunities in defense (Not with Gordon though) The obvious is to reduce Attacking outlay.

I don't think this team is as flexible as you think it is.

You have real difficulty getting on MUN, Spurs or Chelsea assets. Those 3 teams have the most appetizing fixtures.

      Your structure looks like:

      12.0 12.0 6.0 5.5 4.5
      10.0 8.5 6.0

Better to have a 9.0ish mid over that 6.0 slot. Cheap enablers are also easier to find in midfield at the Soucek and 5.5m range. So would definitely recommend 3-5-2 with one premium, one budget forward. 12.0 12.0 9.0 5.5 5.0/5.5

Something like that is preferable imo.

I tried to talk about it in the last paragraph, but compromised trying to shorten it, should I go Vardy or lets say Son in midfield.

I think it's not that hart to get them:
        Vardy > Werner, Martial, Kane
        Auba > KDB, Sterling, Bruno
        Salah > Bruno
Vardy and 6.0 > Bruno (with hit though)

But to upgrade from 6.0 to Ziyech, Pulisic I need downgrades elswhere.

      2. Eze Really?

You make a valid point however, the most important thing is to have an easy transition into Kun, Martial, kane etc. I have seen many midfields like he has. The problem being limitations in the 7 to 9 range. Son yes but many at that price are a risk.

Would like Son or Kane but don't think I can do any better than this if I want any kind of balance:

    TAA Doherty Davies Taylor
    Auba Salah Greenwood
    Werner Mitro Ings

Listening to Planet FPL last night, I think I learned more from the podcast than any other this close season.
James is the "overtalker" and Suj the more laid back. It is clear James has far more football knowledge than Suj and if you can get over the brash demeanor, he is definitely worth listening too. I probably take note when he talks because his strategies are very similar to mine. I particularly like Suj because he can get James back in his kennel without him even noticing.

Anyway, why last night's podcast in particular? Well if you can listen to his fundamental advice and apply it to your own process, he becomes invaluable. Not so sure about getting into gameweek 31, where my concentration will start to lapse, but his analysis of the 1st 4 gameweeks and affecting strategies beyond, was well worth the listen.
He broke it down into team value, wildcards and free hits, aggressive transfers and the value of holding onto chips. There is advice whatever your strategy may be.

Reading Lateriser's article above seemed perfect after the Planet FPL forecast. Using both sets of information together, has taught me something; and that is from a guy who thinks there is nothing else to learn about FPL.

Last season, he was gold, but I'm pretty sure he finished the 18/19 campaign with something like 1 goal in his last 8, so there is no guarantee he'll be a set and forget next season.

Solid option though, if the fixtures were better from the off I'd consider him.

Maybe that's why we overlooked him at 7.5 v 6.5 Jota

Tbf I don't think there's a player in there that doesn't have some kind of lean patch. At least he's one that will repay you

Yeah, I think you're right, prob now is he's £8.5m, and two / three blanks and we'll be getting twitchy with Ings, Werner, Martial around that price.

    5 at the back setups don't necessarily mean 5 blockbuster 5.5s +

Play 'em week in week out and still have funds up top

Except Southampton had 9 clean sheets across 38 games. And can't remember many goals being scored off crosses. Hardly week in week out material imo. Saliba instead of Vinagree though, and we're in business

Looks good to me! The 0.5 itb is a sensible idea too - gives you flexibility. I personally won't be picking any of our defenders (LEI) any time soon. Morgan is very slow these days and Evans wont be back until GW4
