Az and Mark discuss mistakes from 2019/20 in first FPL BlackBox podcast

The first episode of the relaunched FPL BlackBox podcast was beamed live on YouTube last night, with our very own Az and Mark diving straight into the self-reflection.

The pair pull no punches as they discuss their mistakes from 2019/20, be it transfer strategies that failed to pay off or early-season gambles that were – in hindsight – always doomed to flop.

The thorny issue of team value gets a mention as debate rages over whether early transfers are a good thing, especially with the potential threat of COVID-related postponements disrupting short-term plans.

Taking a longer view, Az and Mark also consider what’s been holding them back in the last few seasons and how they can improve going forward.

There’s a first look at the duo’s Fantasy Premier League drafts for the new season, with the curveball picks of Matheus Pereira (£6.0m) and Eddie Nketiah (£6.0m) raising an eyebrow.

The YouTube and podcast links are below.

About the Podcast

The FPL BlackBox podcast is part of our Scout Network.

Each week, Az and Mark will look back on their decisions to reflect on what’s going right – and what’s going wrong.

The co-hosts will be analysing the mistakes they have made throughout the season, with the hope of learning from their errors to become better Fantasy Premier League managers.

There will also be assessments of other elite managers’ performances along the way, along with the usual chat on transfers and captains.

Head over to the FPL BlackBox YouTube page to subscribe now and, while you’re at it, why not do the same with the Fantasy Football Scout channel.

No Messi headache for FPL. However, even as a Barca fan, I wished we could see him at the PL this year with this City team!

True. Looks like Bartomeu wanted to keep him at any cost and take leverage from that but Messi's interview is brutal.

Surprised Barca don't wanna cash in while he has a value, considering it's unlikely Messi stays next season. Wages included that must be like £200-250M lost potential money. Can build a big new team with that.

They would be dogshite without him though. That he hasn't had major back surgery over the last several seasons, is just purely based on his genetics beeing superior

Or it could be that the loss they would incur by losing Messi this year would be bigger? Which is why Bartomeu wanted to keep him at any cost despite an open secret of fallout between him and his ploy of hiring firms to disrepute Mr. Barcelonas like Xavi, Puyol, Messi and Pep.

Maybe but that's a big number to have to beat, and if they don't achieve much it's a big fail really numbers wise. It's probably more political for Bartomeu to keep his place by keeping Messi, who knows.

Its hust wages really. Barca didnt want to let him go for free and city werent going to pay any money becuase wages are already ridiculous.

If barca said they's consider selling him for 100-150 I think City/PSG would find the money.

Is Justin not likely to start after that Castagne transfer?

Is Mitchell looking more nailed than him?

I heard they would play 5 at the back, with Justin playing one of the cb positions. Thomas on the left until Pereira is fit and then who knows. I think Justin is safe for 2-3 weeks.

We didn’t sign anyone last year and it worked out well in the end. We have a lot of players on the cusp of “stepping up” which I think Klopp would prefer over a new signing, unless someone leaves. Keita, Minamino, Jones and Brewster (if not leaving) all to have bigger roles this year

I like Justin short term and I think Webster and Lamptey are underrated at Brighton. They also rotate nicely with some others

      Is this looking balanced? 0.5ITB

      Ramsdale,
      KWP, TAA, Vinagre
      (A)uba, Salah, Son, Barnes, ASM
      Adams, Werner

      (Button, Justin, Mitchell, Davis)

Trying to get a little away from the template

I would downgrade Barnes and upgrade Adams personally. I think Armstrong gives more value for the same price in the Southampton mid. Mitrovic is only 0.5m more

Am I right in thinking Dier is slightly more nailed than Davies?

He's more nailed but will he get more returns at the end, I don't know

Dier's competition is Sanchez while Davies' is Sessegnon, who Mourinho said is not a left back before. So unless they sign someone or change formation, I think Davies might be slightly more nailed.

Actually I forgot about Rose but apparently he is likely to leave the club, I guess it would mainly depend on that.

Just switched from Kane and Bavies to Werner and Doherty. Feels like I'm being dragged into the template but also feels like two very sensible moves. What do we reckon?

Vardy for Werner for the first two gameweeks?

As good as Chelsea may be, home to Liverpool isn't a better fixture than home to Burnley...

Is Werner likely to do better away at Brighton than Vardy is against a newly promoted West Brom?

Vardy definitely has the better fixtures, right?

If Ziyech is ready- I will go with him and Vardy.
If not, i ll get Werner

Chelsea can easily score 2 against Liverpool even if they loose the game.

Right, but Vardy could easily score 2 against West Brom?

I'm not saying Werner isn't a good pick, I'm just saying Vardy has easier fixtures. By a wide margin.

Nothing new or spectacular here, but nice confirmation directly form the dressing room. The Spurs RB provides the with on the right, and Son on the left. But, when RB has the ball in the last third, Son is tasked getting into the box. Maybe we can expect Son in the box more, and we have to see how Doherty adapts to the new role, but obviously he'll be more up the pitch than Davies, and the 1.0 price difference migh be justified there.

Doherty will be gold in that formation and he has more than Jimenez to pick out.........180 points easy this season.....

I'll start with Doherty. Good fixtures, he'll be attacking RB in good side, you can easily downgrade, you can upgrade to Robertson/VVD, you can switch to Digne if he's better, it's low risk.
