Tips on how to target a top 10k FPL overall rank

Our new FPL Masterclass series unites three of the best Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers around: two-time India champion Lateriser, seven-time top 10k finisher Zophar and five-time top 1,000 finisher Tom Freeman.

Between them, they have 20 overall ranks in the top 10,000, nine of which were within the top 1k.

They’ll be chipping in with regular Fantasy advice ahead of the start of 2021/22, with opinion on everything from tips for newcomers to captaincy picks.

Our trio of top managers will be writing for Fantasy Football Scout every week throughout the new season – and only subscribers will be able to read all of their articles in full.

FPL pre-season: Trossard hits hat-trick from wing-back role 1

Having previously provided general advice for FPL managers ahead of the upcoming campaign, discussed proven assets v Fantasy gambles, mused on the importance of a strong bench and debated the importance of team value, our panel are now asked about their strong suit: how to target a top 10k finish.

LATERISER SAID…

This is such a tricky question and I don’t really know how to answer it but let me give it a go. Firstly, you need to determine what your own skillset and temperament is like. Are you good at playing a stat-focused game or an eye-test game? Are you comfortable playing a high variance game (which is dependent on your risk appetite)? Take advantage of your own skillset and temperament and play the game you’re comfortable with (it doesn’t have to be black or white).

Once that is out of the way, don’t presume that this season is going to be similar to the previous one. Every campaign in FPL is very unique and you need to try having no biases from the previous season going into the new one. Methods that worked for you last year might not necessarily work for you this time around.

So after every week, you need to take a step back and think macro and strategy while making your moves. FPL is such a dynamic game that one week is a very long time and a lot of moving parts are there which you need to be on top of.

The most important tip, in my opinion, is that nothing really increases your chances of success in this game more than good old groundwork and research. This game has become more and more popular over the years and the managers we are competing with in FPL are armed with more and more information. This means that you need to go more than the extra yard to gain an advantage on your competition, which means reading more articles, doing your own research, watching highlights carefully, visiting fan forums, etc. This is always going to be the most important factor in giving you a chance of finishing in the top 10k once you’ve determined the style of play you’re comfortable with.

TOM SAID…

Firstly, the game is much, much harder nowadays. Even the casuals will be aware of the Double and Blank Gameweeks, so I’m not sure setting yourself a top 10k target from a pool of 8m+ players is such a good idea. I’d argue that a top 50k finish is perhaps more realistic, and let’s be honest, the difference between the two is often a couple of big captaincy calls going your way, or maybe your Triple Captain firing. Sometimes you’ll get lucky, sometimes you won’t; that’s just the way it goes.

However, to hit those really high finishes, planning is essential. Try and visualise how you want your team to look a few weeks down the line, paying careful attention to captaincy and any big fixture swings. As a result, it should at least ensure you don’t have to take any unnecessary hits ahead of a deadline.

Knowing when to react to the development of teams in shorter spells is also important, too: always ask yourself if they are the real deal or have they simply benefitted from an easier run of fixtures?

Also, ensure you put enough time aside to watch games and analyse data, so that you can at least form your own opinions rather than count on others.

ZOPHAR SAID…

With the number of FPL users growing each year, achieving a top 10k finish is only getting more difficult. With the game so popular and information so widely available, players are well aware of Double/Blank Gameweeks and there are so many resources to aid them in their planning for the same. Simply picking the popular template players used to be a viable strategy early on but this would probably only get you a 30-40k finish these days, not in the top 10k.

To get there now, you need to move onto the next bandwagon before the crowd. There’s no point transferring a player in after a haul, as the masses would already have caught onto him and there won’t be any significant gains to be had as most people around your rank would already own him. For this, it is necessary to think forward. Look at when the fixtures are favourable for a player and bring him in ahead of that run, rather than waiting for him to deliver.

You also need a few differentials in your squad to make up ground. If you are near 70-80% of the template, then the gains are going to be steady and not significant. A few punts on low-owned players, say under 10% ownership, could propel you up the ranks if they deliver. I would say the last 10 weeks are a good time to look for differentials, not early doors. In the first half of the season, it is better to go with the trusted, proven picks, and by the second half, we usually have enough information to ascertain which players are going under the radar.

Are Brighton looking to sign any striker in this window? If they sign one, how much do you think he'll cost in FPL?

Have seen Edouard linked - he could only be 6.5 surely and given their typical transfer policy I don't see them buying a "name" striker who would be more than that.

Some uncertainty about him starting also gw2 has been mentioned here. If White is your cover for him it could be an issue. Whether Shaw starts gw1 has also been considered uncertain. I don´t know what is current consensus about that situation. Telles is injured, that I know.

I think you could very well be right and though I understand desire to get ahead of the curve and jump on early, just think there are better options over first few gws. I see maybe one clean sheet against Burnley in first 4 games and not that many goals.

Barring injuries, transfers and pre-season hattricks, I think I am pretty settled on 90% of my team which unfortunately looks like the template on here.

Only toss ups I have are:

      4.5 defender
Jota / other 7.5 mid or Robertson

Key for me is picking a decent structure with options in all the relevant price points so can swap easily if it becomes obvious I backed the wrong horse.

From structure point of view I prefer Jota over Robertson. Early bandwagons are usually not defenders. Jota has also quite nice price point. Usually I don´t care so much of them, but since my plan is to start with Watkins and Buendia who need to go after gw3 I believe that having Jota may save me one transfer.

This is exactly why I have been on Jota, cause it is an easy jump to any 7.5 mid or lower mid. Just got to decide on strategy of whether to jump on early bandwagons for price rises/points. I've tried starting season with 4 pricey defenders in past and have always shipped at least one to make room for a mid / striker.

I don´t think Kane affects my team that much. If he goes to Manchester before season starts it means him and no Bruno. If the situation is still unclear, I´ll have Bruno in order to be able to get Kane easily. If we get certainty that he stays in Spurs (is that possible?), then I will have to think whether to have Bruno or spread the money and C Watkins come gw3. Anyway TAA for example is 100% nailed in my team if fit.

Antonio - excellent fixtures, absolute beast and nailed to start when fit, delightful asset I'm happy people are avoiding.

Shaw and Digne for 5.5 - initial thoughts when fixtures were released is that we had two absolute gifts on our hands - set pieces, attacking returns, BPS, excellent fixtures and a decent defense for that price is hugely appealing to me.

Good fixtures and happy to ship him out in gw3 if we have first midfielder bandwagon rolling.

Doherty is too much of a punt for me, unless we see Nuno using him as wingback. Why Bachman? I'd just go with the crowd and back Brighton to do better.

I've seen a few posts on here earlier suggesting there's a risk of Sanchez being injured. For those who have him in current drafts, what's your preferred alternative? Another 4.5 (e.g. Bachmann) or moving to a 5.0 (Meslier, Henderson, Pickford etc.)?

Level of risk is up to you.

Longer term would prefer to have TAA in my team then Greenwood and could struggle if he does well in opening weeks. I don't see attraction in Reguilon and see there being unnecessary money tied up in rotating him, White and Fofana, Just downgrade one to a 4.0 and upgrade the other with your spare cash. I understand the desire to be flexible, but leaving 1 m for changes just means you start off with 1 m less on the pitch for opening weeks.

Not as far as I am aware of. But rare to use your 3rd sub and you have a 1st WC to get you out of trouble.

According to your linked team, you did very well last season, good recovery.

It's one of those ones where hindsight will tell you everything. It's definitely risky, you could end up using a deep bench. Being different on purpose or is it literally what you expect will score high?

There have been many friendlies cancelled and some matches in different countries in Europe, so we have to be prepared for them. I think I had 5 players (Dias, Stones, Gundo, Son and someone else) in cancelled match last season and it cost me a lot. I was already chasing in that point, so I thought I had to take a risk... We can only hope for no cancellations, but we can´t build our risk management purely on hope.

There's a big ol' new grey banner at the top of the page on desktop that has bugged out on me a few times. It's cool that the crazy busy navigation of the tabs is being tackled, but you're encroaching on my readable space! It's getting claustrophobic! On my screen, there is literally only space for the green box around the comment I'm typing in. http://prntscr.com/1i5duoq
    Not a fan, I'm afraid.

    Few bugs:
    1. http://prntscr.com/1i5fmcl
    2. Clicking on a permalink to a comment opened a white page with content similar to what you see in (1), presumably related.
    3. Clicking on my profile/grav in the top right on the grey banner can opens, close then open the menu in one animation (instead of just opening it)

Please ask to reconsider this solution in general as well! Losing 10% of vertical space makes this a less pleasant place to be, especially when the main content we're looking at (the articles/comments) is already very slender on the page.

Surely y'all can just reduce the number of tabs in the top bar. I never look at them BECAUSE there are so many of them (with so much stuff in the dropdowns) and they aren't intuitive to me.

      Hi there Deulofail,

We're experimenting with some new nav at the moment to try and provide easier routes to the volume of content/tools etc that we're creating and adding at present. We'd done some testing, but nothing is ever quite the same as putting it out 'in the wild' so to speak!

We will take on board all feedback of course, so if it's not popular it'll be back to the drawing board!

Thanks for sharing and points definitely noted.

For me it´s showing those other 5 games all the time atm, no matter what I do 🙁 Sometimes less is more and two clicks is not an issue but annoying user end view simply destroys the feeling to want to read or write anything. I totally agree with Deulo. Back to drawing board, PLEASE!!! (And excuse for SHOUTING)

Thanks for the reply Elfozzie. It feels a bit like this and the new members area were designed by someone with a monitor. If it's not already, I'd say make sure usability/quality of life on smaller desktop screens is a non-negotiable part of your acceptance criteria.

I have plenty of feedback to give about everything haha! But I'll save you an essay. One related thing is that I never go to the home page because I simply don't understand the layout and what the modules are. E.g. how do I get to the most recent articles? Is this where they are categorised? Etc. It just feels a bit of a mess. And for that reason, amongst others, I never go to any page of articles.

Perhaps this is where some of the work on organisation can go. If the pages that feature articles are more intuitive, you could condense some of the tab headers in the top bar into one dropdown, where each option in the dropdown takes you to a neat page where you can see an overview and choose where to go next. Unclear whether I was clear with that, but take from it what you will 🙂

        Cheers!

Dawson instead of Coufal, until I see him playing in pre-season. Lots of tinkering but I think I’m done. Kane transfer won’t change that I can assure you.
