Scout Reports

Can Leon Bailey live up to his potential and become a viable FPL asset at Villa?

We assess the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) credentials of new Aston Villa midfielder Leon Bailey (£6.5m) in our latest Scout Report.

The Villans struck a deal with Bayer Leverkusen moments after their friendly win over Bristol City on Saturday with the club announcing their new arrival earlier today.

The Jamaican winger’s capture follows the signings of Emiliano Buendía (£6.5m) and Ashley Young (£5.0m), although Jack Grealish (£8.0m) is seemingly heading out of Villa Park and bound for Manchester City.

Bailey scored 39 goals and supplied a further 26 assists during his time in Germany as well as playing in both the Champions League and Europa League.

Villa head coach Dean Smith said:

Leon is a hugely exciting young striker with great pace and creativity.  He has enjoyed a successful career at Leverkusen and we are now looking forward to watching him show his skills and talents for Aston Villa in the Premier League.

The addition of Bailey suggests it will be an exciting season at Villa Park, but what exactly will he bring to Dean Smith’s side and where does he fit in?

We’ll attempt to answer those questions and assess his potential FPL worth in the article below.

THE HISTORY

Bailey started out in Jamaica at footballing school Phoenix All-Star Academy before heading to Europe in search of a club.

Having tried his luck in Austria, Germany and the Netherlands, the youngster impressed during a trial at KRC Genk. However, the Belgian side were unable to offer him a contract due to FIFA restrictions on signing under-16 players.

Without a club, Bailey returned to the Caribbean, but his break arrived soon after when he signed for Austrian side FC Liefering and then Slovakian outfit AS Trenčín.

Such was his level of performance that he was then snapped up by Genk, where he swiftly became a fixture in the starting XI and went on to win the Belgian Young Footballer of the Year award in 2015/16, before Bayer Leverkusen paid €20m for his services in January 2017.

Having spent several months getting used to his new surroundings, he lit up the Bundesliga in his first full season in Germany, registering nine goals and six assists as he was named Newcomer of the Year by the VDV, Germany’s version of the PFA, and was also included in the Bundesliga Team of the Season.

Despite a slight dip in the two seasons that followed, Bailey rediscovered his best form in 2020/21, bagging 15 goals and setting up a further 11 in all competitions.

BAILEY’S BUNDESLIGA RECORD AT BAYER LEVERKUSEN:

2018/1921851
2019/20121053
2020/2125598

Above stats from WhoScored

At international level, Bailey has had something of a rocky relationship with the Jamaican football association, but finally made his senior debut against Honduras in June 2019 and has since gone on to represent his country on 10 occasions.

THE PROSPECTS – AND WHERE DOES HE FIT IN AT VILLA?

“Leon, like all players at Phoenix academy, are developed to play at all three points of attack. He can play on both feet; cut in from the right and onto his left; cut in from the left onto his right. He can play on both sides of the pitch. His favourite position is right wing but he will do whatever’s in the best interest of the team. Leon is superb at free-kick, dead-ball and corner situations.” – Craig Butler, stepfather and agent

Bailey is an extremely quick and versatile attacker who is comfortable playing on either flank.

However, he predominantly featured on the right wing of a 4-3-3 formation at Leverkusen last season, where he was able to cut inside onto his stronger left foot.

Wolves will likely play a 4-4-2 this season with their new manager?
Firpo looks like a good option very attacking.
Samedo flatters to deceive plus Wolves have difficult fixtures in the first three. I have a feeling they will struggle this season.

          Combination of factors:

          1) Jimenez very long injury lay off - will he be the same player?

          2) Likely formation change - new manager who favours a 4-4-2

          3) Dependant on younger players such as Neto and Fabio Silva coming through - no Jota any more

Looking for a little bit of guidance:

    Pickford (Sanchez)
    TAA Maguire Veltman (White Ait-Nouri)
    Raph Salah Mahrez Havertz Buendia
    Wilson Iheanacho (Perica)

Have 1.5itb with this. Was planning no Salah or Bruno and leaving room for Kane or new Chelsea striker but will be a bit late for GW1 and with other moves happening I'm planning an early WC for sure at this stage. I'm happy with this for the first 3-4 weeks but really want Son and don’t know how to fit him in. Out of that midfield 5 I'm probably only planning on keeping Raphinha long-term, Havertz will move if Chelsea sign a striker, Buendia after GW3 probably, and Mahrez will go if Kane arrives there. I can manage to move Buendia to Son with a few changes (probably Iheanacho to Toney, Pickford to 4.0, Veltman to 4.0) but I don't think it seems worth it especially with it leaving my bench light if Mahrez misses a game and Ait-Nouri doesn't play much, and with Villa's good first few fixtures. The 1.5itb is useful for moves for any early bandwagons but should I keep it or upgrade someone like Veltman to Chilwell?

I'd downgrade Ait Nouri to 4.0 and then use at least 1 of the 2 itb for an upgrade

Not sure on Iheanacho at all given forward competition and tactical shape changes by Rodgers. But besides that I like it.
You could consider going for a 4.5m striker on the bench and upgrading elsewhere or keeping money in the bank instead.

      1. Nate(U)dog(ie)
        • 3 Years

Yeah I'm definitely worried about that. I was dead set on him before but the possible formation changes are definitely a problem. I already have a 4.5 fodder striker though which is part of the issue unless I want to go 4-5-1 which I'm not confident of.

Not sure the rejigging is worth it myself - Mahrez Havertz Son is one too many for me - they all come with pretty hefty question marks given their price. If Son is high priority then I'd make the straight choice between Havertz and Mahrez - I'm in the Havertz camp personally.

1.5 seems a luxury unless you plan Havertz to Son week 2 - which will naturally backfire 🙂

      James and 0.5 itb?
Double up on Everton with Digne? Think it's as likely a double up early as any and relatively low risk given generic Digne and rubbish 4.5 keepers everywhere else

      1. Nate(U)dog(ie)
        • 3 Years

Thanks. I'm pretty happy with Havertz (been there since first draft) but that's fair. I think he'll play fairly consistently until another attacker joins. I actually don't think there are many questions around Son either personally, he's had a good record with and without Kane in the past and may now be on penalties too as well as some corners so I'd be even less worried about him. Not considering moving Havertz to Son, feels a waste so early to plan transfers and even with Chelsea's fixtures I can see him doing OK. Mahrez is fair, I wasn't considering him until recently having seen a lot of stats regarding his starts in the second half of last season and his form then too. I'm a bit hesitant on an Everton doubleup, I actually only moved Martinez to Pickford given Villa's poor run snd how short their next good run is. Thanks for for input though, I'll need to think this over a bit.

Just doing a tweak for the first time in ages - pretty similar to what you have here. All dependent on no Lukaku transfer which would likely push me off Havertz. Son stays. Essentially double Leeds attack - best preseason in the land against a bunch who are only now meeting up - and that Everton double up - don't imagine I'll keep Digne long - I never do!

You won't agree on Jim but I'm relaxed about that 🙂

Shaw -don't mind if he misses week one. Waste of a transfer to bring him in.

See the likely transfer spots being Havertz Digne and Benrahma - the rest are types I trust myself to stick by even if they disappoint. key concept for me that

          Pickford
          TAA Digne Shaw (Lamptey)
          Mo Havertz Son Raph Benrahma
          Bamford Jiminez

          1. Nate(U)dog(ie)
            • 3 Years
            2 years, 9 months ago

I like the Bamford pick a lot, not seen him in many drafts here at all, which I understand with pricing but he's still such a threat. Like Jiminez too, they have tough fixtures but Wolves have been consistent against top teams over the years and if they're pursuing an attacking philosophy under Lage then he could do great. Benrahma could definitely do well if he gets time and no-one else is signed he could do great. Reminds me of Salah and El Ghazi, takes shots on as often as possible and is very greedy which is great for FPL.

I get what you mean though. My drafts have been built to hold Kane and Haaland/Lukaku/other 11m~ and see if it would work so it's why I'm a bit mixed up now, but with those and other moves still possible I think I can't avoid an early WC to try fix that into place around the international break. I agree on Shaw, I did the same with Bruno last season, if they're nearly a season keeper then one week isn't an issue once you have cover, no point in booking a transfer.

    Bachmann
    TAA, Digne, Stones
    Salah, Son, Havertz, Buendia/Raphina,

Jayus, that is a tough one. All great on their day if played in an attacking position. I assume Gundogan will be the more defensive of those four now as Pep will not play him in an attacking role?
So I would go Gundogan as the one I would not want.

I think that over the season Foden and Torres could be the best options due to their versatility. And I think their number of games will increase. Mahrez is one to have early in the season.

Relating to the article above assuming Grealish is on his bike to City.

What does the Bailey signing mean for Buendia? Does it mean Buendia is going to play as a 10? Because according to transfermarkt both Buendia and Bailey prefer the right wing.

Charlie Adams was the ultimate 4.5.

I think this is it, lads. What do you think?

    Meslier (4.0)
    TAA / Shaw / Coufal (White, 4.0)
    Salah / Bruno / Barnes / Raphinha / Buendía
    Bamford / Watkins (4.5)

How many players do people on here still have that they had in their first draft? Normally I tinker a lot pre-season but have been really settled this year. For me it's:

    Squad: 10/15
    GW1 first 11: 8/11

Sorry, I thought you were asking for our thoughts on the order. In any case, I think you are right with those 5. Shaw and Stones may creep into that list as the season progresses.

Was great at the Euros, I will give him that. I think the lack of pre-season is putting me off a bit. Also, he was bang on average amongst the top team defenders last season. Expect him to do better this season though. Definitely on the watchlist.

loads have Shaw, he's one of the most popular defenders in the game

      3. Thomas Magnum

I think he’s a bit overrated around here. Yes he looked good at the euros but can’t take euros form into EPL imo. United defenders are particularly frustrating to own as well

        1. zes
          • 8 Years
          2 years, 9 months ago

His numbers were amazing after Christmas, plays in one of the best defences in the league which we'd expect to improve with Varane, he's 5.5m and (actually) nailed on with good fixtures. what's not to love?

          1. Thomas Magnum
            • 8 Years
            2 years, 9 months ago

I don’t think he’s a bad option, just don’t think he’s as good as people are saying. For all his stats and set pieces he didn’t end up doing much better in an attacking standpoint than AWB. Furthermore, I think that United defense as the stats suggest is a good one although can be frustrating as if I remember correct, a lot of their clean sheets came in games against tougher opposition. So hard to predict when they’d come. If he was 5.0 like he was at the start of last season he’d be straight in my side but 5.5 just a bit much for me to start

              • 8 Years
              2 years, 9 months ago

I think there was a particular upturn in his form in the second half of the season, which carried through to the Euros. Just looks like a player with real confidence.

No mate , City and Chelsea are the best defences and Robbo and TAA always have to be in the top 5 , there attacking returns potential is 2nd to none and with VVD back the defence is one of the best

We pick players not teams though. There isn't a nailed on attacking fullback at either of those teams and also Man U fixtures are better. Also add Varane into the mix at Man U and they'll get more CSs this year.
