What can we expect from Romelu Lukaku in FPL – and how will he fit in our teams?

Romelu Lukaku (£11.5m) is now the most-bought Fantasy Premier League forward of Gameweek 2, having outstripped Richarlison (£7.6m) in the ‘transfers in’ column.

The Belgian hasn’t even kicked a ball for Chelsea since his £97.5m move from Inter Milan last Thursday but a further 300,000+ Fantasy managers have wasted no time in snapping him up this week, added to the circa half a million who had him in their squads for his no-show in Gameweek 1.

Unless Harry Kane (£12.4m) or perhaps Jamie Vardy (£10.5m) are in situ as a premium forward placeholder, accommodating Lukaku into our FPL teams will probably require a spot of reconstructive surgery and a reallocation of funds.

How to incorporate the Blues’ new number nine is a question we’ll be pondering in our Scout Report below, which first delves a bit deeper into the transfer and his history.

KEY PLAYER/MANAGER QUOTES

“We were looking for a certain profile and Romelu gives us that. He feels confident to play physical, he feels confident to play with his back towards the goal, but also he is very strong in using his speed and pace. So this will always be a key figure in our game.

“To be strong in ball wins and offensive transition, this is what the league demands and this is what we demand from ourselves, but we don’t want to be only a ball possession team, only a defensive team, a team that only plays long balls.

“We feel that Romelu’s strength is having a variety of strengths. He is strong in the air, he will give us a new power when we cross from the side. I don’t think we need to change our style of play to make him shine. He has charisma, he is a good age now where he is a leader and hopefully he will be one of the leaders in our group.” – Thomas Tuchel

“I’ve been training throughout pre-season and I feel good. It’s been good to join in with the guys and get to work. Now it’s just about getting to know all my teammates better and at the end of the day, I’m ready for Sunday if the manager needs me.” – Romelu Lukaku

“He is a true number nine. Since I worked here, I understand why there are so many physical strikers that are so needed and so successful because the league demands it. He’s a perfect fit for Chelsea and he will take the weight off the shoulders of our younger strikers.

“This is a huge part of the story, that he does not step away and he’s happy to make life easier for players around him. I think players like Christian [Pulisic], Kai [Havertz] and Timo [Werner] will benefit from him.” – Thomas Tuchel

“My role will depend on what the game plan is and what the boss wants me to do. If he wants me to be a focal point or if he wants me to attack the spaces in behind, I can do it. The two years in Italy helped me master all the facets of the game for a striker and now I’m ready.

“I like the system that we play and I’m very flexible. I can play as a two or by myself and I’m used to the system because it’s what we play with the Belgian national team so I don’t need much time to adapt. It’s just knowing the strengths of my teammates in important positions and knowing what we do off the ball, then I can do the rest.” – Romelu Lukaku

THE HISTORY

Source: Wikipedia

Lukaku had spent eight years as a Premier League player before moving to Inter in 2019.

The Belgian had already plundered 33 goals and 13 assists in 73 league appearances for Anderlecht by the time he had reached 19 years of age, departing for Chelsea in August 2011 – almost exactly ten years before he would rejoin the Blues.

Sticky spells under Jose Mourinho bookended the striker’s time in England, with the serial blame-dodger citing youthfulness and ongoing development for his failure to bring the best out of Lukaku in west London and in Manchester.

In between, though, the Belgium international was a force to be reckoned with, never failing to hit double figures for goals in a single campaign from 2012/13 onwards.

A 25-goal season for Everton in 2016/17 and two successful years in Italy highlighted what Lukaku was capable of when managed effectively, as does 64 international goals in 98 caps for his motherland.

PREVIOUSLY IN FPL

Lukaku’s 221-point season in 2016/17 was his zenith in FPL and a particularly memorable one for us Fantasy managers, as the Belgian started out at a bargain £9.0m.

Thanks to some phenomenal work from the ridiculously talented TopMarx, we can break down the above numbers from 2013/14 onwards (records aren’t currently available before then) even further to give a clearer picture of his on-field achievements.

As with most players, there was a bit of a disparity between his historical record against the ‘big six’ and the rest: Lukaku averaged 5.39 points per match against the also-rans and 3.19 in encounters with the elite half-dozen sides from 2013-2019.

The Belgian’s home/away record was less contrasting: he averaged 5.13 points per match on his own turf and 4.29 on the road.

A record of 26 double-digit hauls in 209 appearances was so-so but it should be remembered (especially when looking at the below tables) that four of his seasons involved playing for an Everton side that didn’t finish higher than fifth and that indeed twice ended up in 11th.

    Template frustrations.
I’ve seen a fair few complaining about how template teams are this season, some even saying they feel sick that their team is adjudged to be 90% template.
But it was always going to work out that way, especially right at the beginning. Even more so if you wanted to be competitive.
Reason being the pool of players to choose from was/is very limited, bar maybe at the back.
There’s been players returning from injury, extended breaks, out with Covid and getting match fit. Along with those who are simply injured and those becoming a lot less attractive due to other signings increasing competition and or adjusting a team mates position in to a negative output position.
Of the latter, players like Watkins and Iheanacho became a lot less attractive with Ings potentially pushing Watkins out wide and Daka limiting Iheanacho’s game time. At City I’m pretty sure many of us would have gone with someone other than Mahrez from their squad but with Foden and KDB out we got cornered.
Chelsea fixtures aren’t good and with everyone knowing Lukaku was about to arrive made the midfield and forward line confusing to navigate.
Who were you put off by and why?

I was put off Everton due to too much negativity here and elsewhere. Reckon i should have gone with Digne and DCL, who were in my first draft, after all.

Yeah Digne was a weird one. Getting put off as there’s nobody to meet his supply but turned out everyone was fine.

I won't be surprised if he is the top scoring defender come GW10 considering the fixtures he has. Il be starting him throughout this run and hoping he scores a good points total on average. This week may be a bit painful though .. Hopefully he gets an assist at the least

DCL was looking like he may miss GW1 even up to the deadline. Recency bias.

100% agree. But can't really blame people for going with someone who was guaranteed to start and had a (on paper) easy three fixtures rather than someone that may not even be fit & hadn't played pre-season.

Had DCL and Digne in my first drafts too - but Benitez being coy about who was out with Covid, plus DVL injury doubts meant I went without.

Shame as I think their fixtures are great.

Will most likely go Ings to DCL and possibly Shaw to Digne in the next few weeks though.

I was talking about who I had slight regrets over shying off. I also feel bad about not being able to fit Son in, but someone had to miss out to maintain a balanced squad. I have no regrets over avoiding City from the start. I'm hoping Kane can fanny around long enough that I don't mind waiting for GW7 to bring him (and Lukaku) in.

My 'start of pre-season' set-up was Bruno, Salah, Jota, Raphinha / Wilson / Toney / Nacho.

Main changes through pre-season were Wilson > Antonio (based on pre-season form) and Nacho > Greenwood with a formation switch, based on Nacho's limited prospective minutes.

Don't understand why people are frustrated with the "template" lol,
Everyone wants to have a team who can get maximum points every week and if right now it's from a certain set of players due to it being early in the season, well so be it..
Everyone will have a lot of opportunities throughout the season to catch up with their opponents/extend their lead so relax guys...Once KDB/Lukaku/Kane/Sancho come in the picture, it'll be much more interesting!

It's one of the BS constructions upon which this 'industry' was built, unfortunately.

Yeah an no one is mentioning the benefit - more fpl teams staying in contention for longer, fewer dead teams likely, closer mini leagues, and the impact of picking a non template player is greater.

      I don't understand the template annoyance/hate really.
You either prided yourself on going non template and got hammered in week one, so are bemoaning others going with crowd wisdom instead of being a maverick, albeit a maverick with a low score.
You have the template and are annoyed others also have it therefore diminishing your success because when everyone does great no one does kind of thing.
Or you went non template and bettered it, in which case why moaning because you're clearly a more savvy individual and long may the masses live in the shadow of your greatness.

Can't think of any other options

I don't see the appeal of Grealish @ city right now

It's a bit of a leap to say 'not a natural finisher' and then go to 'so it's assists' only, isn't it?

He got 6 goals in 26 games last season, 8 in 36 the one before. So that's one in 4.whatever.

You can't really claim he doesn't score goals?

The problem I've always seen with Grealish is that he isn't selfish enough in front of goal, doesn't shoot enough and often when there's space he can attack he prefers to play a pass. At Villa it wasn't a huge issue for him as he was often targeted so he freed up a lot of space for the rest of the team but at City he won't be specifically targeted so much over others and will need to take on chances more often, as well as getting used to playing against teams that will want to sit in against his team rather than ones that will be attacking them and leaving gaps a bit more regularly.

One thing that should have been in the article is Lukaku's xG and his xG Delta and same thing with assists.

They have mins per xG and mins per xGI in there which is pretty useful and you can infer /90 numbers from them, but they came to the wrong conclusion (probably based on pure shot volume) that he’d been afforded fewer opportunities than his premium peers. His mins per xG was the lowest of all of them.

Also for anyone curious Sky have an interview with Lukaku up, has a little graph which shows off a bit how Lukaku's game has changed over the past few years since leaving Man Utd (less aerials won and headed goals, far more big chances created assists, etc.)

I can't cope with too many numbers, but it's clear to me he's good for a goal every two games, plus a fair few assists and baps. Good value in my book. Only question is how long can I wait to get him in?

It sounds tempting when you put it that simply, but I'm still drawn more to Robbo after scrimping. I don't know why I've got such a Lukaku block. It's frustrating.

          • 3 Years

Fixtures wise you're probably fine to wait a while. But as someone that thinks Chelsea are the team to beat this season and was one that was crying out for a striker that could finish, I think he could end up being as valuable as Kane and the other 12m+ premiums.

        3. Dr. Rog

Not an easy thing to do at the moment. Actually the same arguments apply to Son in many ways.

First, he isnt better than the other 2 although that argument would get stronger when the fixtures turn.

Next, can you fit Salah + Bruno + Lukaku in a decent team? Well you can, but either you are replacing 2 of your 7.5-8m type options (TAA, DCL, Greenwood type players) with budget players which seems like quite a compromise, or a 442 is potentially possible as there are a whole host of premium defenders available at 5-5.5. I think many will opt for this.

Good points. I think the 1.5m saved between lukaku and son goes a long way in terms of the rest of your squad. I found it much easier to fit son in whilst messing around

He’s correctly priced until he adds more goals and assists to his game. He’s a great signing for the future of Arsenal but not for FPL just yet

I agree although imo he is viewed as the main creator offensively and i think he realizes he needs to produce attacking returns (purely my own assumption)

But it’s another case of getting too stuck on a 5.5 attacking price point (ASM last season) when there are better options in defence at that price

That being said, he may hit the ground running when fixtures turn in GW4 as Arsenal need to perform

Lukakus stats aren't that amazing when you look at that.

The thing is this Chelsea side under Tuchel look the business. If he is playing every week I can see him posting the best numbers of his whole career.

    1. Bennerman
      • 5 Years

Stats aren't amazing? 251 club goals in 508 games? Plus Belgium's all-time record?

        1. Bennerman

OK then, if you want to be smart, record in PREMIER LEAGUE, as you put it, is still:

          217 games, 96 goals.

That's a strike rate of 0.44, which is pretty decent in isolation (Rooney 0.46, to give one random big-name comparison).

And this included his early Chelsea appearances (0 goals in 10 games) and a season at WBA.

He's got a good record. Up to you of course, whether or not you rate him. But facts are facts.

          1. TheTinman
            • 8 Years
            2 years, 8 months ago

You've literally just repeated my point by saying 'includes 0 in 10 for Chelsea and wba'

He is in the high premium bracket competing with Salah Bruno and Kane this year.

            Kane 166 goals in 245 = 0.68
            Salah 98 goals in 159 = 0.62
            Bruno 29 goals in 52 = 0.56
            Lukaku 113 goals in 252 = 0.42

So yes he is lagging behind them. Kane priced ahead as he should be based on performance.
Salah and Bruno priced ahead as they outperform him and are midfielders.

So yes, his stats aren't that impressive for his price. But yes, I think in this Chelsea side he can improve it.

They way they set up is crying out for a central striker to finish the chances they create.

I'll definitely get him for gw7 as he loves to score against the lower teams.

True that. Serie A striker with a dominant team has improved his confidence but Premier League is a step up. But for his price a few cheaper forward alternatives might bring better balance.
