Four things FPL managers should consider for Gameweek 1

We frequently get some excellent submissions to the Community Articles section of Fantasy Football Scout and this summer has been no different.

Here we showcase a piece from site regular Camzy, who argues the importance of pre-season planning.

Introduction

How checklists can help you make better FPL decisions 1

I’ve long been a big proponent of doing a lot of homework before a season starts. The time spent before a campaign allows you to explore and become familiar with all the best FPL assets and their prices before bandwagons take off and skew your perspective. Throughout the season, player recommendations are extremely short-sighted and go week to week so keeping the big picture in mind can really help.

But the most important thing is that your Gameweek 1 team is effectively a Wildcard and the first few weeks of the season will greatly influence your season.

Sertalp B. Çay put out a very interesting tweet (above) about how among the top players, the players selected from their Gameweek 1 squad and Wildcard picks were pivotal in contributing to a good overall score and rank. Hall of Fame number one Fabio Borges had 60% of his overall points from players selected this way.

That means that on average, the players you pick in Gameweek 1 have a higher weight in deciding how well your season goes. Gameweek 1 also offers you the most time ahead of it to tinker, plan and look for valuable players. Doing your homework to find underrated gems, look ahead to fixture swings and also get team balance right so you can adjust in the future is just good FPL management.

1. Looking for Value

 1

I started making a price prediction sheet ahead of the 2019/20 season (before prices are revealed) and I’ve revived it again this year.

TAKE A LOOK AT CAMZY’S PRICE PREDICTIONS FOR 2022/23

The goal of the exercise isn’t to test my understanding of FPL Towers’ pricing. The most important thing at the start of the season is to look for players who are good value. Form comes and goes but picking up a player who is clearly underpriced and can form the backbone of your team is what we should strive for as FPL managers. Our early transfers should be in course-correcting towards these picks but the better your homework, the more hits you make rather than misses and the more you can save your early transfers for other improvements.

Doing this price prediction sheet helps you see quickly who is over or undervalued once the game releases. I made an extra column for ‘difference’ that I will populate after the game launches and highlight which players are under or over what I predicted.

I will say that my experience playing FPL for many years has helped me become more confident in pricing players and making judgments on their value. If you’re not so confident doing a similar exercise yourself, feel free to use my sheet as a guide or lean on other content creators who are doing similar work. But I do recommend doing it yourself if you can.

However, I would not stick too rigidly to the price prediction sheet once the game launches. Lots of factors could change who is a good pick after the game launches – fixtures, pre-season form, new signings etc. But it does provide a foundation from which to build an initial draft and also gives you a better overview of the game as a whole.

2. Team Structure

Armstrong ends goal drought as Livramento keeps up fine FPL form 1

Once the game launches, and even before then if you’re really eager, the next thing to look at is team structure. I know people have differing opinions on the value of team structure and some managers insist that it is a myth, saying that it’s as simple as putting the best players in. This is likely true as the season progresses but at the start of the campaign we don’t know enough yet to make that judgment. Therefore I like to lean on having flexible price points in my Gameweek 1 squad so that I can course-correct easily.

I make a Gameweek 1 team anticipating that there will be a bandwagon that I did not see coming. And what I’ve noticed, is that there is always a budget attacker that bursts onto the scene. Having a budget forward and midfield slot is a good idea so you can get on a hot player early. There should be three slots ideally because you’ll likely want to keep at least one of the success stories you picked early.

Recent seasons have shown that defenders are undervalued and strikers overvalued and the 4-4-2 and 4-5-1 are becoming more popular. In terms of searching for value, it makes sense to shift to heavier at the back in light of recent seasons but I still would not recommend playing ‘five at the back’ at the start of the season because £4.0m and £4.5m gems also form the backbone of teams and you want to be able to get on the next John Lundstram or Valentino Livramento.

I’d also recommend getting at least two playable forwards. You’ll want to have at least two playing substitutes in case of unforeseen line-up changes, and it also allows you more flexibility to buy an emerging forward. I tend to pick one forward from a newly promoted side in my starting squad. They historically come in at £6.5m or less and are often on penalties and are the focal point of a team’s attack. Proven mid-table Premier League strikers typically come in at £7.5m or £8.0m but a promoted forward comes in at £1.0m+ less and is a good early bet.

As a result, this is the rough structure I’d recommend going with:

4.5 4.0
7.5 7.5 6.0 4.5 4.0
13.0 8.5 6.5 6.0 4.5
12.0 6.5 4.5

Of course, this will depend on the eventual prices of players and can differ but the rough structure like this should set you up well (£0.5m in the bank for flexibility).

The last factor in terms of team building foundations: don’t lock yourself out of a team, even if it’s a mid-table one you might not think you’ll triple up on. For example, I’ve seen FPL managers get Emiliano Martinez, Jed Steer and Marvelous Nakamba and then realize that they have no way at all of getting Villa attackers as they emerge as key enabler picks.

3. New Signings

One of the most exciting parts about a new season. I love getting on a bandwagon of a new signing and this year we already have two huge ones that have entered the scene – Erling Braut Haaland and Darwin Nunez.

However, there are far more examples of players failing to settle right away than hit the ground running. Timo Werner and Kai Havertz from two seasons ago being the prime examples. Werner was in nearly 50% of teams in Gameweek 1 that year!

I would caution against having more than one new signing in your starting squad (not including promoted teams) and fall back on proven, reliable and Premier League-tested players. We have time to adapt and bring in the next ‘Michu’ or the next ‘Bruno Fernandes’.

4. Fixtures

Last chance to get FFScout Premium Membership at discounted price 2

The last part is fixtures. These will have a big impact on who you start the season with. Sit down, look at the next six games and see which teams are going to be ones worth investing in. Don’t go all-in on backing players just because they have good fixtures but also don’t stick rigidly on picking Raphinha because he’s clearly undervalued if he has Liverpool and City in the first three games. There should be a balance, although I will say I lean value and consistency over fixtures if the decision is tight.

I would rather pick a player like Bukayo Saka who has guaranteed minutes and is a proven performer over someone like Phil Foden with great fixtures. This also ties in with the new signings section from above.

Since we have no form to go on, fixtures should have a stronger weight on your initial selections. I favour fixtures over form as a manager anyway, but that’s a debate for another time. There are always surprise teams that outperform or underperform every year and it takes a few weeks to know which teams are gelling and which teams are not quite living up to expectations. Give your players the best chance to succeed by putting them up against weaker teams.

Conclusion

Pre-season is one of the most important times of the FPL year. You have a lot of time to familiarize yourself with the game, the prices, the players and any new rules they might implement. Don’t waste it by waiting until the last minute and copying template teams. At least personally, I want to have a clear plan of why I’m selecting players, making sure they align well with my strategy in the short and long term as well as having contingency plans around price points.

The biggest advantage engaged managers have over casuals is long-term planning. Pre-season gives you the most time to prepare so use it wisely and try to shut yourself off from the noise so you can judge to the best of your ability which players are the best value/fit with your respective playstyle.

Good luck heading into 2022/23!

Thanks very much for writing this, Camzy. Always enjoy your stuff!

As was the case with the other Community Articles this month, apologies for the slower turnaround as Rotation's Alter Ego (who usually handled the CAs) departed for bigger and better things.

Haaland reminds me of the great Rudiger Hauers character in Blade runner, hopefully he'll take us owners to new worlds in terms of ranks.

Great article Camzy, thanks for gathering these vital topics together.
Thanks also for pulling together your price prediction sheet. I really like the idea of using it not just to predict what players come in at, but to then see where there may be 'perceived' value on players you consider under-priced. Really interesting concept.

What I don't like is that your pricing puts my draft LiveFPL team £1.5m over budget! [facepalm]
But if I'm completely honest, I think most of us who are playing around with Raga's great work on that, are anticipating starting all over again in July!

Looks like City are about to sign Cucurella.. i think this makes Cancelo less of a safe option due to Pep roulette. Can see the odd rotation esp when all fullbacks are fit

Cancelo is Pep's #1 full back and he plays either side. Walker more a risk in my opinion but most likely Cucurella will be the backup.

I'm not sure how much to read into 60% of Borges' points coming from his GW1 and wildcard selections. Presumably like a lot of people many of his points came from TAA and Salah, mainstays of the majority of squads for the majority of the season, and were in his GW1 and at least first WC selections.

A within reason. He earns a little over a half of what DDG earns. The structure needs breaking (not saying they should be following the Man Utd model). Also don’t think they should be held to ransom though.

I would pay him a resigning fee of £24M for 3 year contract and keep current wage structure. The £24M is equivalent to £160K a week, which is the increase he wants, so do it this way (We can't replace him with £24M so I see this as a perfect deal for player and club?

I don't agree with you Baines. If players want to go, i.e. Mane, then let them, I think this solves the problem for key personnel at the club. I may not agree, but I do see as a solution. I don't mind him going, he has done us a great service, and will resolve the issue of him being a must in FPL 🙂 LOL

      Great article Camzy.

I've done a tweak of one of my drafts using your thoughts, but adding Jesus and Raphinha at Arsenal (but LiveFPL prices), and it comes out like this:

      Raya (Begovic)
      TAA Cancelo Cash Davies (Duffy)
      Salah Raphinha Odegaard Eriksen (Colback)
      Haaland Jesus (Gelhardt)

      1. lugs

that looks decent tbf, those 3 cheap midfielders are the types to tick along modestly but consistently all season, not sure if Raph moving to Arsenal makes him better or worse (possible no pennos, more rotation, vs better team with more scoring chances potentially)

Those mid-priced midfielders are there for their price points. The idea is that if they don't perform from the off, they'll be replaced by those that do.

Right, it's a highly provisional draft. I'm looking as much as the price-points as anything. It's not my #1 draft anyway, but I could be tempted to alter my one-striker policy for Jesus at Arsenal. The other two probably won't stay, but having said that, with Arsenal's opening fixtures I can see a ton of goals there and the aggregate points between 3 attackers could pay off before being offloaded after GW8.

here's my template busting non premium attack draft, if the aim is to average 60+ pts a week, i think this team can easily achieve that, double Pool & City defense means i actually gain rank when they keep a cs instead of threading water with just 1 from each, with solid earners everywhere else, just need Salah, Son & Haaland to stay quite lol

      4.5
      Robbo, Cancelo, Matip, Laporte
      Bowen, Saka, Maddison, Trossard
      Vardy, Nunez

... talking of which, this is midway between my first and second drafts. I still lean toward big-at-the-back myself.
I'm just a bit reticent over Matip as I worry Konate will eat into his starts.
Here's my #1 draft at the mo.

      Raya Begovic

Yes. He won't be 4.5 as Ragabolly has him, but he's still a good punt at 5m. I expect chaos at Spurs wingback positions as Conte uses his subs, but the CBs should play every game for 90 mins.

        No. My thinking is
        1. Bamford will be frequently subbed after his long-term injury.
Either Gelhadt or Greenwood will therefore come on as an impact sub frequently.
        2. He's a 4.5/5m enabler anyway; in an ideal GW he stays on my bench anyway.

I actually think Gelhardt and Greenwood could get a lot more starts this season - Gelhardt up front in a 2, and Greenwood in midfield, especially with Phillips gone, where he impressed in the last game against Brentford

Wayne Rooney leaves Derby County. It's a painful lesson in how loyalty is worth nothing in modern football. He should have walked out and into the Everton gig when he had the chance in my book. Would have been a win-win and left Derby no worse off.

the Everton job probably would have ended in tears too, imagine if he got them relegated, he'd never be able to show his face in Liverpool again

Maybe, but at Derby he proved to be a surprisingly astute manager. I'd say he had more success there than Lampard when you take their respective situations into account, ie Lampard underperformed whereas Rooney vastly overperformed.

fair point, its just the pressure would be immense for him at his boyhood club, i wouldn't blame him for turning down the job for that reason alone

I hear you so clearly. Maybe my unintentional bias towards how he comes across. Personally, I can see both Lampard and Rooney failing. Only the supporters are really adding value to Everton.

He should have left at that point, yes.

And, as a fan of a Championship team, I was very impressed with the job he was doing at Derby. I don’t blame him for getting out now, though.

I jokingly said on another thread that if he gives it 6 months then he should be available to take the reigns at Man United once that lot get this latest manager sacked.

Might not be as much of a joke as I first thought, though.

How many weeks before you play WC1 is optimal based on fixtures this season?
In other words when do you think the major fixture swing occurs?

I'll be waiting for the game to relaunch to see if there is any special World Cup allowance in the rules.

Right. I'm going to try my damndest to hang onto it until the World Cup is done - unless they change the rules.
I haven't looked into an early one, but I do note Arsenal run out of fixture juice after GW8; other like Newcastle look good from GW6. It depends on what players you're aiming for.

I figure on building a team of of heavies and enablers only from the teams with the easiest first quarter of the season , then potentially dead ending for one week after that and then WC1.

Fair enough, but do use your own judgement. The likes of Everton and Leeds are above Spurs in the GW1-5 ticker on this site. What's more, Newcastle are given an easy (blue) rating with Leicester difficult (red). In other words, I wouldn't be too tied to the ticker.

most years i WC in gw3 to catch price rises and jump on wagons that i don't own etc, its probably the best week for price rises but probably not so good to gain rank over the next few weeks as the market is still volatile, i'm gonna try and hold off this year until about half way through the first half of the season

My first impression was to WC GW8. Splits the pre-World Cup fixtures in half. Deadend GW7 selling Spurs defender and/or City CB. Good fixture swing for West Ham, Palace, Newcastle. Bad fixture swing for Chelsea & Leeds

They'll do the same thing they always do under Ralph, go through a period where they're one of the best teams in the league then immediately and inexplicably become the worst team in the league for a longer period, grind out a win or draw against the big boys and be relatively safe by the end because there are worse teams

Yeah there's a long way to go in the market but I've only really heard that they're in for Sterling and maybe Jesus. New owner seems very much FSG and Kroenke mold. Long term they won't be the Chelsea we're used to

They just need a couple of centre backs and maybe another forward. They're already really strong at GK, wingbacks and centre mid, decent foward options too.

I feel like this team should be over budget but it seems to add up.

          4.5 GK: Meslier / Raya
35 DEF: TAA, Robbo, Cancelo, James, Chilwell
30.5 MID: Diaz, Foden, Saka, Harrison
          12 FWD: Haaland

          18 SUBS: (4.0, 4.5, 4.5, Geldhardt)

Only way I have figured out to have three players from both City and Liverpool.

          1. @persecuted_by_mods

Solid team, not certain on the Chelsea wingbacks just yet need to see some signings from them.

Probs a bit extra but as someone that isn't paying too much attention to the predicted prices would be good to see each players prices in RMTs in brackets next to the names

Pretty much agree with the above. Good squad, just depends on Chelsea. With no bench you are vulnerable to rotation in midfield though.

Yeah I agree, just need to make sure I pick the right £4.5 subs. I'm thinking Moder and a Bournemouth forward (Moore or Dembele) should get plenty of minutes and to odd attack return.

Leeds are in talks with Crysencio Summerville over a new contract, according to Whites reporter Phil Hay, as the winger courts interest from the likes of Nottingham Forest and AZ Alkmaar.

This could actually be quite significant for FPL as he could turn out to be a £4.5 mid option who scores and assists a fair few this season.
Apparently he will only sign a new contract if he is guaranteed first team football, Raphinha's exit would allow this.

As a Leeds fan I can vouch that Summerville is a really exciting winger/forward who is absolutely rapid and great at both dribbling and finishing.

His PL2 stats are quite impressive, averaging an attack return every 80 minutes (Leeds PL2 team have the youngest average age in the league).

If I was to punt on a £4.5 mid to be my second sub it would be Summerville (Moder from Brighton my 'safe' option).

Interesting to see that both Chelsea full backs have the highest points per minute out of all the defenders. If either come in 1 mil cheaper then Cancelo it’s going to be hard to resist.

Until they make some signings I don't see Chelsea being better this season, they had injuries that derailed them for sure but they're now Rudiger Christensen and possibly azpi down with Silva a year older, this surely affects the wingbacks. I didn't see major improvement in Kai or Werner last year either, kante a year older. They also kinda got figured out as the season progressed

James and Chilly are fantastic though for sure

Agree I think they will do worse, but also think reliance on wing back creativity will increase, so depends if that accounts for the likely fewer CS points!

Points per minute is an iffy way to judge. It doesn't account for missing games and cameo sub appearances. Not much use if you have a weak bench.
