FPL Gameweek 17 Scout Picks: De Bruyne and Haaland in, Salah out

We have chosen our best Fantasy Premier League (FPL) players for Gameweek 17 ahead of the Boxing Day deadline.

We’ve made room for a Manchester City premium double-up but there’s no space for Mohamed Salah (£12.8m) or Harry Kane (£11.6m) on our meagre budget.

We line up in a 3-5-2 formation this week and, as ever, are limited to £83.0m for our first XI.

After a reader vote ahead of 2022/23 (I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: democracy simply doesn’t work), an overall price cap of £100.0m is in place for our 15-man squad, too.

GOALKEEPER

Cornet and Smith Rowe 1

In the top two for everything from big chances conceded to expected goals conceded (xGC), Arsenal have been in mean form on their way to pole position in the Premier League table. No side has kept more clean sheets (seven) in 2022/23.

There is a downside to that solidity at the back when you’re Aaron Ramsdale (£4.9m), as he has collected only two save points all season.

So with the disclaimer that we might be looking at a six-point ceiling, the Gunners’ impressive numbers and West Ham’s injury crisis up front leads us to plump for the England international between the sticks. Even with strikers available, the Hammers have still only scored three goals in seven away fixtures in 2022/23.

Gabriel Magalhaes (£5.2m) was considered for his goal threat but West Ham are strong in the air and only Manchester City have allowed fewer set-piece chances all season.

DEFENDERS

3pm team news: James, Sterling + Auba subs as Potter rotates

Three full-backs with attacking threat make up our defensive picks.

The (hopefully) fit-again Reece James (£5.8m) makes a welcome return to our weekly selection, with fellow England internationals Luke Shaw (£4.8m) and Kieran Trippier (£5.9m) joining him at the rear.

There’s a bit of trepidation about the defences of Chelsea and Manchester United: the Blues’ underlying numbers aren’t great during a period of transition under Graham Potter, while United could be without three-quarters of their first-choice backline in Gameweek 17.

But James and Shaw face the two sides with the lowest expected goals (xG) tallies in away games, with Nottingham Forest scoring only once on their travels all season.

Trippier and Newcastle United meanwhile face a Leicester outfit ranked 20th for xG on their own soil.

We know we’re also getting goal and assist potential with James and Trippier, both of whom rank among the top six defenders for expected goal involvement (xGI) in the current campaign.

Shaw might not be at the same level as those two but the attacking contributions of full-backs are key to Erik ten Hag’s system, and the United left-back sits joint-seventh for chances created among defenders.

    RMT please

    Ederson
    Trippier - James - Cancelo - Shaw
    Sterling - Mount - Rashford
    Haaland - Kane - Martial

    Ward - Dunk - Andreas - March

Don’t like Sterling and Mount, one seems enough of a gamble. No Liverpool forward feels like a gamble.

Chelsea could ask for much better fixtures for 3 GWs and Liverpool have reasonable but not exceptional fixtures with no DGWs and the only rumoured one is double Chelsea.

Anything non template is a gamble

Languishing down in the millions with overall rank. My drafts have looked almost identical to most on here so trying to be slightly different with a few low owned players. No point otherwise really.

    Kepa
    James, Trippier, Doherty
    Kdb, Kulusevski, Rashford, Almiron
    Haaland, Kane, Martial

    Ward, Estupinan, Andreas, Bueno .5itb

    G2G? 0.2 ITB

Only other option would be to downgrade Gabriel to White and upgrade either Bueno/Patterson to another 5.0 defender, though nobody looks overly enticing in that bracket

    Kepa
    James Tripps Gabriel
    KDB Rash Martinelli Almiron
    Haaland(c) Kane Darwin

    Ward Pereira Bueno Patterson

I’m going with Havertz as third striker alongside Haaland and Darwin - he’s in form and reasonably cheap - anyone else taking a punt?

Players score every week behind closed doors in training

These friendlies are as similar to the above

So there is no form to speak of - and he is a rotation risk with Pulisic / Sterling and Auba very likely to start in some of them

An easy avoid when cheaper and more nailed options are about

I would love to considering the fixtures but as already stated, too much risk for game time, let alone consistency.

I’ve also got Darwin in my side purely for no Liverpool coverage elsewhere. I’ll be honest, I’m not comfortable with it as I don’t rate him and Liverpool are no longer fixture proof like previous seasons.

I’d say having one of these two is a punt, opting for both is borderline reckless imo.

If it were me, I wouldn't want to write the Maddison spot out of my squad entirely as I'd want him back asap when fit. So I'd rather take a short-term punt on someone like Foden/Kulusevski

The other two need benching, which one should go first?

With the ever growing list of DGW i think spending money rotating nice options in the 6.5mil to 8.5mil midfield range is viable

Planning to bench Foden this week as i can see some minutes of the bench most likely

    Kepa Ward
    James White Cancelo Trippier Estupi

    Mount Foden Zaha Saka Rashford

    Darwin Haaland Martial

Martial Mount Rashford moved out for Mitro (if fit ) , Trossard and Martinelli in 18, 19 is the plan

Rotation works very nice for the front 8

    Week 17 : Foden benched
    18: Mount benched
19-20 Zaha benched and expect CRY BHI to get the dgw in 21.

CRY Bri have a 70% probablity of been a dgw so worth it to have a few

So over the next 3 weeks even if i have injuries / suspensions as one would expect with such a rotation i have way more flexibility than others and dont need to move out a player as nornal

hence more flexibility to move for dgw players

In the above option would make things much easier if injuries / unexpected stuff happening

That Liverpool midfield of 2019/20 of Wijnaldum-Fabinho-Henderson was perfect for them.

It was so defensive that it allowed Mane-Firmino-Salah and TAA-Robertson flourish.

That midfield rarely got goals and assists, but it protected the CBs and the space behind TAA and Robertson so well.

As usual my team is 0.1 over budget

    Who do I drop?

    Ward, Kepa
    Cancelo, James, Kinder, Tripper, Saliba
    Rashford, Almiron, Andreas, Salah, Martinelli
    Kane, Harland, Solanke.

Biggest rule change for the future has to be pricing squad players at their actual price. Some of these guys to sell and buy back would be an extra half million. Buying early should be rewarded.
No way I'm selling my house for the price we paid 8 years ago. Clubs don't sell players for what they paid way back when. Baa H.

      Saliba to white

      Saliba is on 4 yellows

      Or ward to Iverson

You get half of their increase when bought early. Would have 5mium teams if that rule was implemented unless the price rises were slowed down

      1. Hutchiniho
        • 5 Years
        1 year, 5 months ago

Maybe the rises could slow but feels harsh taking Saliba out for 4.9m rather than his current value of 5.3.
Saliba to White just works but really I should be looking at the 5.2s here not the 4.8s

    Interesting three-mium option:

    Kepa, Ward
    Walker, James, white, Trippier, Bueno
    Salah, KDB, Rashford, Martinelli, Andreas
    Haaland, Martial, Wilson

See which premium does best and downsize in 3-4 weeks. Very nervous with 0 in the bank if it goes wrong!

I'm having the same thoughts about losing James for Cancelo. Guess it depends if your FOMO is stronger for Cancelo or for James. Seems that James is either feast or famine and its all about getting him in at the right time. My history with him over the years is pretty grim, with lots of injuries and one point cameos, and no hauls that I can recall.
