Scout Notes – Champions League – Tuesday

Jamie Vardy’s second-half goal is too little, too late as a spirited Leicester City finally exit the Champions League.

Leicester City 1 Atletico Madrid 1 (Aggregate 1-2)

And then there was one…the Premier League’s European aspirations now rest with Manchester United after Leicester could only draw the second leg of their Champions League quarter-final with a savvy, if at times rocky, Atletico Madrid.

Jamie Vardy’s second-half equaliser provided a measure of hope as the Foxes, easily subdued in the first half, went back to basics after the break and caused a measure of discomfort to the visitors’ backline.

The difference between the sides, in the end, was quality – Atletico controlled large parts of the tie and took the occasional chances that came their way. Leicester were second-best until all that was left was to give it a go. That they did, with impetus gained by a switch to 3-5-2 after half-time, and the Spaniards bent but never broke under the less than subtle onslaught.

Foxes boss Craig Shakespeare made one change from the first leg. Robert Huth was suspended, so the fit-again Wes Morgan, back after missing five league matches with a back issue, partnered Yohan Benalouane in the centre of the defence.

The Leicester captain’s return should have been welcome news for the 10.9% of Fantasy Premier League managers with him in their squads – only Vardy (14.8%) is owned by more.

But Morgan never looked match-fit and succumbed to a hamstring problem in the second half that threatens to put him straight back on the injured list again.

As for Vardy, he remains the talisman of a team reborn under Shakespeare but still lacking consistent returns from Riyad Mahrez.

The Algerian has managed two goals and an assist in the seven league matches since Claudio Ranieri was sacked. Vardy has scored six times and provided three assists over the same period.

That form makes the England striker almost undroppable, although the Foxes’ run-in is a decidedly mixed bag.

They face West Brom, Watford and Bournemouth and have a double Gameweek 37. But that involves Man City away and the visit of a rampant Spurs, while their next match is a trip to an Arsenal side scrapping to keep themselves in the hunt for the Champions League places.

The worry is that, as their place in the Premier League looks safe enough, there will be precious little for the defending champions to play for now their European campaign is finally over.

Shakespeare will know that a strong finish would do wonders for his own ambitions to lead the club on a more permanent basis. Whether that is motivation enough for the players remains to be seen.

In the meantime, Vardy remains the only Leicester asset worthy of consideration but, given the current clamour for the likes of Harry Kane, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Christian Benteke, he has become a casualty of heavy sales.

Vardy lost over 86,000 owners over his past two Gameweeks and has suffered a deficit of 17,000 so far ahead of the weekend deadline.

Team: Schmeichel; Simpson, Benalouane (Chilwell 45), Morgan (Amartey 84) , Fuchs; Mahrez, Ndidi, Drinkwater, Albrighton; Okazaki (Ulloa 45), Vardy.
Subs not used: Zieler, Musa, King, Amartey, Gray.

Other than Valencia who I already have, are there any DGW defenders worth bringing in for Brunt and a -4...?

Gibson maybe or another united defender. Who else would play otherwise? I'm in a similar spot and probably wouldn't play another defender over Alonso

For me its either Rojo or Bailly, neither are particularly appealing but it does allow me to ditch Brunt with a possibility they score well over two games.

Aye, it a case of cant have them all.

I agree they are the weak points but with solid 37 fixtures theyre good enablers. My single GWrs in 37 are

          Chambers (SOT)
          Hennesey (HUL)
          Holegate (WAT)

Not enough $$ for that unfortunately

Zaha/Townsend or possibly King will depend on form. I've got Zaha now and I've a funny feeling he's gonna double-blank this game week -- if so I'll never see him again.

Gabriel and Stones are to monitor for the moment -- would obviously like 100% nailed cheap 37DGWers but can't see much. If Rose doesn't come back I'll be all over Davies

A- instead of Aguero on the top straight away?

    B- on the wing?

C- off the bench and try to regain that starting spot again?

    Hows this for a plan?

Tempted to use my FT this week for Negredo or Zaha, but effectively means a hit later when there's better DGW options, Kun for 37..

    34:
    Valdes (Jaku)
Davies - Alonso - Valencia (Yoshida, Robertson)
    Sanchez - Hazard - Alli - Siggy
    Ibra - Carroll - Lukaku

34: Save (DGW Valdes, Valencia, Ibra = 3)
    35: Siggy/Davies > Mustafi or Monreal/Redmond
36: Save (DGW Mustafi or Monreal, Yoshida, Sanchez, Redmond = 4)
    37: Carroll/Lukaku > Aguero/trash 4.3 (DGW 442 Mustafi, Yoshida, Alonso, Valencia, Sanchez, Hazard, Alli, Redmond, Ibra, Aguero = 10)

    All free, 0.2 cash "spare".

I've already got PVA and Valencia....may keep it at that as keen to field Alonso as well. If I do any it'll be Heaton to Hennessey as I can't see me playing Heaton again this season given dgwks.

Also Hennessey has a good GWK 35.

Henessey between the sticks - 2 shots at a clean sheet and if not then surely brings in save points facing those 2 attacking opponents.

Barragan - bought in mainly due to his price - has 2 good fixtures though and boro quite solid.

Valencia - plays for a strong defensive side and frequently brings in assists too - could also play at wing back.

Also considering transferring in PVA - frequently scores and assists, the most attacking palace defender.

Big Sam does love him! Came on against Leicester around 70 mins and looked incredibly fit and strong going forward. Can see him stealing his place back but as always, not 100% to start both games coming back from injury. Think the reward outweighs the risk myself.

Biggest risk for me is Walker > PvA / Antonio > Firm/Coutinho (already got Son + Alli. What other MID for £8.6m?)

Valencia a worry but bails looks a good option. De Gea a but expensive for me

Only have Valencia and might bench him (if he is benched vs Burnley and only plays at City - where I don't see Utd keeping a CS... we could be lookin at a big fat one point from him).

Currebtly starting Mawson (STO), Maguire (WAT) and Alonso (SOU). Could backfire big time, or work brilliantly. Also considering bringing in Gibson or Friend (for Brunt) and start the Boro guy... but don't have my WC left and don't want any Boro player after GW34 anyway

Valencia (attacking threat, got him in ahead of him being a rotation risk)
Bailly (nailed on defender in decent DGW defence)

I have Valdes and Valencia because I got them in previous GWs planning for gw34 (this never works) but I fear for Valencia's minutes and I am hopeless with Valdes...

      This is my current ranking:

1 - Gibson - 5.0 - because he is nailed and bonus points magnet and should get at least 1 CS.

2 - Bailly - 5.4 - because he is nailed and should get at least 1 CS.

3 - Rojo - 5.2 - less nailed but still nailed, Differential and has slightly more atacking threat and should get at least 1 CS.

4 - Valencia 6.0 - at rotation risk due to europa league but great atacking threat and could get 1 CS.

5 - PVA - 4.9 - risky beacuse is returning from injury but a differential and great atacking threat. Don't expect any CS

6 - Barragan - 4.4 - cheap and nailed and should get at least 1 CS.

7 - Chambers - 4.3 - nsky beacuse is returning from injury but cheap and a bonus point magnet and could get 1 CS if manages to play 60 minutes.

8 - Darmian - 5.0 - not nailed but differential and some atacking threat and could get 1 CS.

9 - Friend - 4.4 - not nailed but cheap and some atacking threat and could get 1 CS.

10 - Guzan - 4.2 - can miss the second game but is cheap and could get 1 CS.

hi guys, any suggestions for DGW34?

    Jaku Heaton
    Walker Alonso Pieters Valencia Amat
    King Zaha Sanchez Alli Allen
    Kaku Kane Gabbi

Still have my WC which I am keeping for GW 36, good idea? I need to get Ibra in my team though or should I risk it and go with Rashford?

    a. Heaton + Pieterss + Gabbi > Valdez + Gibson + Rashford for -8pts

Utd going out makes a huge difference...

Waiting until Thursday night may well leave me with a question mark but it'll be no bigger than it is now... and it could be smaller so it makes sense to just wait and then consider it.

I am not sure Hazard is a great pick.
Chelsea will play smallball, even more than all year lo,g. They'll score the first goal and first defend all the way which leaves Hazard with defending duties rather than killing the game duties imo.
Better prospects in the chasing team / UCL qualifiers.

Not true... We saw earlier in the season that during the times when Chelsea would sit back and defend, Hazard and not Costa would be the most advanced player an any counter-attack would break through Hazard rather than Costa so a defensive-minded Chelsea may actually help Hazard's prospects.

£0 ITB and 0 FT. Looks like I'm going Ibra-less...

Good squad. Not tempted by Ibra myself.

Would have at least one of the 3 DGW strikers: Ibra, Tekkers, Negredo.

    Is this worth -4?

    Siggy -> Zaha
    Lukaku -> Ibra

This is the worst DGW ever. I usually take hits, but there are no options that I'm 100% about. I think I will be avoiding -12 and handing you my position in the Irish Contingent somehow 😉

I think i still might go for a -8pt hit myself.

Sanchez & Carroll > Zaha & Ibra -4 to start.

              Another hit after that.

                *makes transfers, covers Tony Hibbert*

You're lucky you've got Carroll (never thought I'd say that), removing Lukaku for Ibra looks like a big risk

He has to go nows the time.

Losing Sanchez isn't ideal but i need to sacrifice someone and it's only short term.

I'm really happy that I didn't use the WC earlier, we have a little bit of leeway if we make a poor transfer

It's nice to have it thinking it could be a real boost in the last three weeks.

I'm happy to weather 35 and go for it in 36 and try to post three big scores to add to my decent recent run.
