Maguire delivers on goal threat to fire England to semi-final against Croatia

The all-European World Cup semi-final line-up is complete after England and Croatia got the better of Sweden and Russia in Saturday’s two remaining quarter-finals.

England kept their first clean sheet of the tournament in a fairly comfortable 2-0 win over the Swedes, while Croatia progressed via a penalty shootout for the second round running after being pushed all the way by the host nation.

Value buys Andreas Granqvist and Denis Cheryshev bowed out of our Fantasy squads as their respective countries exited the tournament, but there was relief all round for owners of well-backed English and Croatian assets with transfers at a premium ahead of the next deadline on Tuesday night.

We round up all the goals, assists, clean sheets and Fantasy talking points from Saturday’s two quarter-final matches.

England 2-0 Sweden

TOP-SCORING PLAYERS

      • Harry Maguire (£4.9m) – 11 points
      • Ashley Young (£5.3m) – 9 points
      • Dele Alli (£8.9m) – 8 points
      • Jordan Pickford (£5.5m) – 7 points
      • Jesse Lingard (£7.5m) – 6 points
      • Kyle Walker (£5.7m) – 6 points
      • John Stones (£5.9m) – 6 points
      • Kieran Trippier (£5.5m) – 6 points

After the late-night drama of England’s shootout win over Colombia in the last 16, this was a relatively straightforward success for Gareth Southgate’s side over a dogged but ultimately limited Sweden team.

We highlighted Harry Maguire (£4.9m)’s dangerous threat from set pieces before the match and the Leicester City centre-back duly delivered on his underlying attacking statistics, powering home a header from an Ashley Young (£5.3m) corner-kick to give England the lead on the half-hour mark.

READ MORE: The Big Numbers from the World Cup quarter-finals.

Raheem Sterling (£8.9m), still without a goal at these finals, wasted a glorious chance to increase England’s lead before the break as he dawdled when put clean through by Jordan Henderson (£6.3m).

Dele Alli‘s (£8.9m) two-year wait for an England goal ended just before the hour when he was left unmarked to nod Jesse Lingard‘s (£7.5m) cross past Swedish goalkeeper Robin Olsen (£5.2m).

England’s other “Harry”, the tournament’s leading goalscorer (£11.2m), blanked and was afforded only one shot on goal from distance in the entire 90 minutes.

On-form Jordan Pickford (£5.5m) made three superb stops to top his clean sheet off with an extra save point.

England XI (3-5-2): Pickford; Walker, Stones, Maguire; Trippier, Young, Lingard, Henderson (Dier 85′), Alli (Delph 77′); Kane, Sterling (Rashford 90+1′)

Sweden XI (4-4-2): Olsen; Lindelof, Granqvist, Augustinsson, Krafth (Jansson 85′); Larsson, Ekdal, Forsberg (Olsson 65′), Claesson; Berg, Toivonen (Giudetti 65′)

Russia 2-2 Croatia (3-4 pens)

TOP-SCORING PLAYERS

    • Denis Cheryshev (£5.6m) – 7 points
    • Mario Fernandes (£5.1m) – 7 points
    • Andrej Kramaric (£7.8m) – 6 points
    • Domagoj Vida (£5.5m) – 6 points
    • Luka Modric (£9.1m) – 5 points
    • Mario Mandzukic (£8.9m) – 5 points
    • Artem Dzyuba (£8.1m) – 5 points
    • Alan Dzagoev (£6.9m) – 4 points

England’s semi-final opponents on Wednesday night will be Croatia, who became the first nation since Argentina in 1990 to win penalty shootouts in two successive World Cup knockout rounds.

Russia’s unexpected run in their home World Cup looked liked it might continue when Denis Cheryshev (£5.6m) scored his fourth goal of the tournament in spectacular style, curling home a 25-yard shot after a lay-off from Artem Dzyuba (£8.1m).

Croatia were level before the break though, former Leicester City striker Andrej Kramaric (£7.8m) nodding home after a cut-back from Milan Mandzukic (£8.9m).

Ivan Perisic (£8.5m) wasted the best chance to win the game in normal time, rattling the woodwork from eight yards after a penalty box scramble.

Domagoj Vida‘s (£5.5m) header from a Luka Modric (£9.1m) corner bobbled apologetically into Igor Akinfeev‘s (£5.0m) goal to give Croatia the lead in extra-time, but the hosts restored parity with just five minutes to go.

Alan Dzagoev (£6.9m), making his first appearance since the opening match over three weeks ago, whipped a free-kick onto defender Mario Fernandes’ (£5.1m) head to send the match to penalties.

Fernandes was one of two Russian players to miss from the spot – the other being Fedor Smolov (£7.7m) – and Croatia could even afford the luxury of Mateo Kovacic (£7.5m) failing from 12 yards as they triumphed 4-3 in the shootout.

Russia XI (4-2-3-1): Akinfeev; Fernandes, Ignashevich, Kutepov, Kudryashov; Zobnin, Kuzyaev; Samedov (Erokhin 54′), Golovin (Dzagoev 102′), Cheryshev (Smolov 67′); Dzyuba (Gazinskiy 79′)

Croatia XI (4-2-3-1): Subasic; Vrsaljko (Corluka 97′), Vida, Lovren, Strinic (Pivaric 74′); Rakitic, Modric; Rebic, Kramaric (Kovacic 88′), Perisic (Brozovic 63′); Mandzukic

How do you plan to get kane in your team?
    Liverpool has tottenham(a), chelsea(a) and city(h) from gw5 to gw8
So I guess only salah is enough or even too much. I will switch firmino to kane in that period and may find a way to get back firmino later

How many pts is goalkeeper rotation worth? Has there been a hot topic/article on this before?

      Is it better to have a (4.5 - 4.0) OR (4.5 - 4.5) combo?

Does the rotation bring an extra 0.5m worth of pts?

This can't be really measured? Two 4.5ers I reckon.

You could probably get a good approximation based on averages. If there is a sizable swing one-way, it would be enough to act on.

Good question. At the moment I think I will go for Fabianski and Bettinelli (I think at your recommendation!), and downgrade Bettinelli once Fabianski's fixtures clear up.

That said, it might be equal value to stick with one 4.5 the whole way. But without a playing 4.0 it's a risk (last two seasons I've had tpo take a hit on the keeper, even when I had 2 playing 4.5s!), so perhaps downgrading to a 4.0 a bit later could allow for the best 4.0 option to become apparent, if such a thing exists.

Found a 3 year old article that strongly supports rotation, and it actually brings a sizeable amount of pts.

Yeah the Bettinelli Fabianski rotation is awesome. The best partner for Flappi, hands down.

Got to say potentially brings in a sizeable......There's no guarantees. It's soul destroying when you have a rotation and the player you start gets nothing and the benched player scores the points.

        Fabianski + 4.0.

He only scored 15 less than DDG for goodness sake. Fire and forget and enjoy the save points against the big boys.

The biggest hauls tend to come in the difficult fixtures. When they get 9 saves and a CS against a big side, it can be huge.

This is why I want to explore it. The harder the fixtures, the more save pts. But is it enough to offset the fewer clean sheets?

"So despite having to pay more for two starting goalkeepers (rather than picking one starting keeper and a 4.0 back-up), you are far less likely to come out ahead by rotating keepers than if you simply make the correct decision on one and stick with him." - 2013

The question for me would be, if you have one starting goalkeeper and a 4.0 backup who doesn't play, is the risk of your starting goalkeeper getting injured, suspended or occasionally rested/rotated worth the 0.5m saved?

          1. Piggs Boson
            • 12 Years
            5 years, 10 months ago

            Yep, the article mentions risk.

"So rotation lowers the risk of choosing a keeper from the wrong team. This makes sense, as the idea behind keeper rotation is analogous to the diversity portfolio concept in financial management. More assets results in less risk."

It's clear that 4.5 - 4.0 brings the better value on average, but it also increases risk. You need to pick the correct keeper, and you need to avoid injuries/suspensions.

Weighing it up, I think it's better to have 4.5 - 4.5; but it if you desperately need that 0.5m elsewhere, I would not be shy to use it.

Best way to deal with this is pick a non playing 4.0 from the same team as yours 4.5. Last year I had Fabianski + Nordfelt (or smthing like that) and was completely calm. This year though Fabianski comes with Adrian who is also 4.5 and thats a bummer for my faforite strategy.

Last year DDG & a 4.0 was great for the first two thirds or so of the season... I think overall a 4.5-4.5 combo probably would have done better though.

This year i am intrigued by the Ruddy/Norris combo though - for 8.5m, Wolves are an ultra defensive team at the best of times & will show no shame in shutting up shop & playing negatively so should get a few unexpected clean sheets & a lot of save points for Ruddy.

I think that's what I'll be starting with... although DDG & Ederson both look great value options paired with a 4.0.

Initially, I would suggest set and forget option. You can look at Ederson/Karius. Rotation works fine after the first WC (GW 8 and later) IMO. We can get more information on the teams. Last year Utd had great first 8 fixtures. So, I started with De Gea (set and forget) and he was incredible for the first 8 GW or so. And I continued with him. This year I'm going with Ederson. I'll pair him up with Ben Foster (4.5M probably)...they rotate fine. I tend to go strong on the defense. This is my current rough draft:

        Ederson - Ben Forster
        Azpi - Robertson - Coleman
        Sanchez (C) - Sane - Ramsey - Sigurdsson
Aguero (VC) - Benteke - Wilson

Bench: Cairney - Tomkins - Schelotto

I've frequently gone for the goalie-rotation option and got it wrong every time. You have to select the right combo and switch them correctly every GW. Simple home/home leaves you agonising over the points on the bench when your playing keeper's team wins 2-1 for a 2-pointer.

This time it's either a premier like Ederson + 4m benchie,
or a riskier Pickford, Pope or Fabianski with 4m fodder to spend outfield. If I go with Pickford or Pope I can easily switch to Fabby.

The one point I don’t hear anyone making is about the probability of hitting a high scoring 4.5. No one wanted Ben Foster last year, but he would have been in these conversations. If you started with Ben Foster+4.0, you would have had a difficult decision to make. If you had Foster+4.5, you had two bites at the proverbial apple. If West Ham undermine Fabianski’s value by conceding too many goals, then it’s better to have a playing 4.5 option paired with him.

Ive tried different combo for goalkeepers. In the past three seasons, Had GK 4.5m GK 4.0m, GK 4.5m GK 4.5m,
GK De Gea GK 4.0. Myself i prefer GK 4.5 & GK 4.0. Play the GK 4.5 every game and forget. Gives extra money to be spent else where.

      Thoughts on this lot?

      Pickford, McCarthy

      Mendy, TAA, Coleman, Wan-Bissaka, Bednarek

      Salah, D.Silva, Ramsey, Neves, Masuaku

      Kun, Firmino, Tosun

too many fringe/weak players - Wan-Bissaka, Bednarek, Neves, Masuaku - lots of junk there.

Maybe wait until Mitrovic gets added to the game (hopefully 6.0) - then do Tosun--> Mitrovic and Neves --> 6.0/5.5

Yes, this. I'll add you could get off to a nightmare start if TAA and Mendy are rested GW1-2.

Save 0.5 on a keeper. Have faith in Pickford (for early fixtures at least), get a 4m benchie keeper and get a playing defender to start with, then look again per Bambi's advice..

So how many missing players are there in FPL?

      So Far i can find no;

      Kenedy (Chelsea, possibly to Newcastle)
Mitrovic (Newcastle possibly to Fulham) (Good spot by Rainer)
Patrick Roberts Man City ( Good spot by Irishred)
Danny Sturridge Liverpool (Good spot by JurgenRodgers)
      Jack Wilsheare Free Agent.

I understand that Wilsheare has no club but the rest do. Fpl trying to dodge giving us some cheapies?

      Who else is missing?

FPL has launched. It's incredibly exciting. Why are there so few articles on FPL?

You can see from the posts on here that people are far more interested in FPL than the World Cup, and yet there hasn't been a new article in days.

Has the content schedule changed because of all the new, unfamiliar authors?

There have already been quite a few articles on fpl.

The volume of world cup articles has been understandably very high though, with 4 matches + recaps over the last 3 days.

As someone who is very interested in both, there's been a lot more going on in the last couple of days world cup-wise than fpl-wise.

I'd argue there's a lot of world cup articles, rather than very few fpl articles

Kante a pretty solid player for his price tbf.

5m = 5% of budget. To win FPL you need around 2,500 pts wich includes 300 or so for captaincy. So a raw score of 2,200 pts. As Kante isn't a captaincy option then 5% of 2,200 pts = 110pts. He is there or thereabouts.

Prefer Cairney myself, but not a horrendous pick as he is nailed, gets the odd goal or assist and regular CS points due to playing for Chelsea.

Neves has nothing to do with Kanté, exactly two opposite types of a defensive midfider.

England fans are giving him a lot of stick, somewhat understandably, for his poor finishing, but not realising just how essential he is to the way we play.

I get that Sterling does good work off the ball. But would Vardy really not offer the same thing. Vardy is quick, makes those runs in behind and down the channels, he presses the opposition and he has a lot of dirtiness in winning penalties and free-kicks. He is a better finisher too.

I have no doubt that he is a good player for the team. Just like Emile Heskey was, but we need just a little more from him. Maybe a few assists or to do something when he gets into those great positions is all.

Yeah, I agree. He's been very positive, except in and around the box, which has made him incredibly frustrating to watch. I trust Southgate anyway - if he stays in the team, then he deserves it coz Gareth says so

To say that he is intelligent for following the maniger's instructions is a bit of a stretch. I find Sterling to be mobile and fairly selfless, but not quick in terms of decision making.

His understanding of the game isn't evident in the way he moves around the pitch or particularly when under pressure to give a key pass or finish.

He might be crucial for England (might), but that alone is not a reason to *not* criticise him on an individual level. The criticism isn't about his work rate, not is it his ability to work his way through a set of instructions in his head with each touch of the ball, it's based on other things, like a lack of quality in the final third and the competition for slots in the England team 🙂

Kinda knew it already he is like what John Aldridge termed himself under Jack Charlton 'a runner'
Completely different role at this club etc.
But that does not excuse Rahem's terrible finishing.
It must be very annoying for an England fan.
He does all the hard work then fluffs his lines.
(Aldridge took 17 games to score for Ireland by the way now he is still Ireland's joint fourth all time with 19 goals)

Please help, apologies for long post

Need to rejig my team for the semi finals. I am top of my fantasy football league by 8 points. I am thinking of taking a 4 point hit to make an extra transfer but not sure if it’s worth it.
          Here is my team now..

          Subsasic
          Miranda* Trippier Maguire Varela*
          Coutinho* Modric Willian
          Kane Griezmann Lukaku

Subs - Muresla* Granqvist* Cheryshev* Inui

I am thinking to give balance

          -Muresla to Lloris
          Varela to Pavard
          Coutinho to KDB
          Willian to Pogba
          Cheryshev to Lingard

It will basically mean I have to get a cheap defender that likely won’t play. But then my team can be

          Lloris
          Pavard Trippier Maguire
          Modric Pogba Debruyne Lingard
          Kane Lukaku Griezeman

this is the most polarised team I think I have ever seen. 3 pool, 3 city, 2 everton, 2 saints in the 11.

Any players who are nailed on (for the 3rd place game) even if their team gets knocked out in the semis?

Chances of England's World Cup players playing in FPL GW1 ? I'm thinking fairly slim given that there will be less than four weeks between their final game of the WC and GW1, and they are going to need a decent break between seasons.

Not just England - French and Belgian. I'm constructing a GW1 XI with no one still in the WC involved.

          Thoughts on this 15?

          De Gea, Speroni
          Coleman, Tomkins, Daniels, Boly, Bednarek
          Cairney, Salah, Sánchez, Jota, Ramsey
          Agüero, King, Tosun

Generally good. Think you can do better than King and Tosun up front though....

Both have good fixtures over the first 9 games - sadly not many decent options £7m or below.

I'm wary of Tosun with a new manager coming in, but he could be decent.

King just didn't do enough last year. I'm not sure if he's even nailed.

Personally going for Zaha. You know what you're going to get there (see my team below).

          RMT

          Fabs McCarthy
          Robertson Douglas Cedric Daniels Schelotto
          Salah Eriksen Sessegnon Delofeu Cairney
          Auba Firmino Zaha

Would like to get D.Silva in there somehow.

I think you need city players in there for their run of fixtures gwk2 onwards. I currently have Dilva and Sane
