FPL Question Time – Consult our panel ahead of Blank Gameweek 31

Our regular feature, Fantasy Premier League Question Time, returns ahead of Blank Gameweek 31.

There’s plenty to ponder for Fantasy managers at this point of the season, be it chip strategy, the international break, Champions League-influenced fixture congestion and, of course, which players to target for this weekend’s matches.

We’ve assembled another panel of familiar names to share their opinions on your questions, which you can submit in the Google form below.

Who’s on the panel this week?

Chief FPL Manager – A member of the Fantasy community with a huge Twitter following, “Chief” runs the FPL Hints website and has six top 1% finishes to his name – one of which was an overall rank of 110th in 2011/12.

Holly Shand – Founder of the popular Fantasy Football Community website and video star for Official FPL. Currently sits inside the top 5k after a 102-point Gameweek 30.

Joe – Scoutcast regular and the host of the excellent series, Meet the Manager. Joe is a fine manager in his own right, boasting a best-ever overall FPL rank of 840th in 2013/14 and having six other top 10k finishes to his name.

I've got so much value tied up in my three forwards.

Jiminez: PP 5.5. CP now is 6.8
    Rashford: PP 7.0. CP 7.6
    Aguero: PP 11.3. CP 11.9

Seems a no brainer to hang on to Jiminez. Aguero is probably the one to sell right?

Have same value tied up in Aguero.. Considering Higuien and getting aguero back on FH and then WC.

If Rashford drops .1 you only have a net loss of .2 on his value so no reason to hold him just because of that. Also, with Lukaku back in the team the need for Rashford to carry the team how he has previously has been lessened. Think he's a little dip in form as a result of this so I wouldn't be holding purely because of .2.

Aguero and Rashford are expendable but all depends on your plans too.

It is not too much for Rashford and Aguero. If you sell them before they drop again you can buy them back with 0.2 difference after their drop. It is huge for Jimenez, keep him if you can.

My current team for GW31 (10 playing) -

    Boruc
    Robertson - TAA - Luiz
    Hayden - Salah (C) - Brooks
    Wilson - Vardy - Higuain

Bench - Ederson, Son, AWB, Bednarek, Pogba

Worth taking another -4 hit to get an 11th player? Would need to be for Son most probably. Who could I get in?

Schar and Jimenez to Azpi and Vardy for a -4? Only issue being the 0.6 id lose on Jimenez just to get him back on free hit and later on WC.

Vardy just appeals so much more than a Doherty replacement

    My FPL team:

    fabianski
vvd - robertson - pereira lascelles
    billing - hazard - salah (c) - F.Anderson
    vardy (vC) - rondon

    etherdige - doherty - jimenez - pogba

    My idea:
    GW 31 -> one move?.
    GW32 --> FH
    GW33 --> ?
    GW34 --> WC

    good idea?who as midfielder?deulofeu?

    any suggestion?

    Fabianski
    Robertson, TAA, Pereira
    Salah, Hazard, Richarlison, Puncheon
    Vardy, King

(Button, Doherty, AWB, Pogba, Jimenez all with no fixture)

1FT, 2.9 ITB. Currently got 10 for GW31 (if you can count Puncheon).

People seriously need to learn to let go of player value. There are eight gameweeks left, you need to prioritise points. You can't use the accrued value to fund a summer holiday.

It still matters to me as I want to FH in 32, so if I sell Jiminez and Aguero now I'll lose about 0.5m value on them when I'd probably just want them back in my FH next week, meaning I'd have less funds with which to put together my FH team

      1. HamezMace
        • 9 Years
        5 years, 1 month ago

Exactly, too simplistic to say it doesn't matter.
        1. If you still have FH chip
        2. If you still have WC
        3. If you want the player back in future (i.e selling Pogba, Aguero, Rashford, Jimenez before 31, but want them back in 32/34)

        ..then value is still important.

I think it is massively overstated even with all chips remaining. You've made a profit on these players. To maximise a free hit in 32, you'd have to have the cheapest bench possible and likely go without Salah, which frees up a huge amount of funds. That makes paying an extra 0.6 to get Jimenez back barely an issue at all.

          1. HamezMace
            • 9 Years
            5 years, 1 month ago

You're not going to want a dirt cheap bench when you WC though, especially with BB chip still available.

I agree people perhaps worry about it too much, but it is something, among many other things, to consider.

      2. F_Ivanovic

agree ..but there is a caveat with the DGW and FH chip. I'm tempted to get rid off Jimmy and Doherty with nearly 1m value between them for 31 but I will want them both back for dgw 32 on my FH .keeping both or one of them now means I have more money to spend on united assets

I think holding the cheaper players like Donherty can make sense, but having the likes Kun, Sterling, Rashford, Pogba and even Jiménez value on the bench then not even getting 11 starting, and some starters will be Schindler or other fodder, I honestly don’t get it ? 🙂

Lets say City, Chelsea and United all get DGWs in 32 as predicted by Crellin. That is three defensive spots gone for free hit already. In a 3-4-3, there will be no room for Doherty and he could easily be rested in one of their doubles for Vinagre or Adama anyway.

Why are there rules saying that you have to get defenders from those teams? And why is it not possible to play a different formation than 3-4-3?

I agree, the arguments for keeping seems more like a mind-block in letting go of value after having spent the season building it up, rather than any real constructive reasoning ... but I am sure I will be proved wrong as always 🙂

    6. F_Ivanovic

haha... couldn't agree more. I'm currently keeping Jimenez but I can get a strong 11 for next week without having to sell. Having 11m+ tied up in City assets or even the 9m in Pogba isn't doing anything on the bench for 2 weeks.

What I find strange is the argument (Joe for example on the Scoutcast) that the extra 0.5 or 0.8 million you get by benching Pogba and Jiménez in the blanks will be of such a help in getting a FH team in DGW32, but then ignore the fact that you can likewise get a much better BGW31 & 33 team with the extra 5.0 million (over the base 4.5 million player value) you get by selling them for 31/33 and then buying back in 32.

It’s a player upgrade of 0.5 million in 32 v 5.0 million in 31/33 ... and then if you are not even fielding 11 starters in 31 ... mmm ...

They will be letting go though ... of .2 million per player this gameweek in price drops anyway 😉

      1. My Name Is Prince
        • 11 Years
        5 years, 1 month ago

Also the extrea 0.5m isn't necessarily a good thing, so few GWs left also means more randomness might occur from now until the end, a cheaper player might end up outscoring the 0.5m more expensive one from now on until the end... I lost my ML three seasons ago because I had better TV than my rival, so I was able to buy the more expensive Liverpool defender at the time (can't remember who it was) for a DGW, whereas my rival having less TV had a cheaper Liverpool defender.... And guess what, the cheaper Liverpool defender (might have been Moreno) actually outscored the more expensive one and my rival ended up winning me by a few points... 🙂

Yes, having the cash can blind you against the quality rather than the value of a player choice, but no matter how much value your budget is you are alway priced out by 0.1 of some perceived upgrade 🙂

The next three are going to be crucial weeks for my cash mini league.

I lead by 51 points. All chips intact. Can field 10 (+ Puncheon) without hits next week. Will FH 32.

ML rival has all chips, can field only 6 for next week. Of them we both own Salah, TAA & Robbo. So he's got 3 that I don't own and they are King, Hayden and Peltier. Would love it if he'd FH this week.

Is a -16 to field 11 stupid? All chips remaining. I've taken 1 hit all season.

Depends on value tied up in said players and if you'll want any of them for FH32. They have to avg 4 points+ to make the final transfer worthwhile and I think all except Maddison will. So maybe just do a -12 and ignore Maddison.

We're around the same rank and in all honesty all of those moves will benefit you in the coming week so I would say where you're not risking dropping out of a top 100k and have ground to make I'd say why not since a lot of people will be taking at least -4/-8.

That said, it depends on what chips you have left - if you have all of them then I'd say go for it. You could also play FH this week if you only have 6 players - that might be a better strategy. FH works if you have 7-9 players this week, with only 6 maybe it's worth considering FH as you'll have 3 DGW players from that lot straight off the bat next week.

All hits are effectively -2 if you haven't yet got a full team (i.e get 2pts for starting). So do the points projection for each and judge whether they are likely to get an additional 2pts.

Also depends if you want pretty much exactly the same team as everyone else this week and GW33.

    Which trio is better:
A: Brooks, Vardy and Van djik/Robertson
    B: Wilson, Rice and Mané

Players that will be transferred are: Aguero, Puncheon and Bennett
    Have Salah and TAA

    Thanks

I've just listened to the Scoutcast and Joe was on about the CHE defensive double up. I don't like that at all away to Everton and can see EVE scoring. Maybe just do the one?

yeah more likely to do just the one mate

might even go for a west ham defensive asset

        balbuena or fredericks lol

expect balbuena to return to the starting line up

Can you tell if rival has used FH chip? Will the team value and ITB change?

They’ll be showing 0 transfers. Dunno about value. I’d assume that’d be for the old team “behind scenes”

So many decent cheap options. Who needs value ?

    Boruc a 4.1 playing GK
    Valery a 4.0 defender
Strikers yeah Jiminez has risen a lot but Barnes and Wilson dirt cheap too.

Pick one, maybe two to hold onto and be brave

I’ll hold Pogba as my hold and then Doherty too but I’d be willing to sell either down the line

    Good to go?

    -4 already.
    0.0itb

    Boruc (Patricio)
Digne - Robertson - Diop (Lindelof, Bednarek)
Hazard - Salah - Mane (Pogba, Jota)
    Vardy - Wilson (Rashford)

    32: FH
    33: Have 10
    34: Normal week
35: Have 5x DGW'ers, will have 3x FT before then to get some more.

I'm taking a -4 to field 8 man in 31. Then another hit to field a full DGW32 team with TC.

I have awb + pva though who could both potentially have a game in 33! if watford beat palace

Just to summarise. So far, according to FFS, I should have the following players for GW31:

      Fabianski
      Pereira TAA Robertson

I'll wait for the midfielders and forwards articles to come out.

Had a woeful last gameweek, dropped massively out of top 10k.

Worth going for the jagular and bringing in these players for -8?

      Kun + Jimi + Son >>> Vardy + Wilson + Hazard

Do it or just do Jimi > Wilson and field 10 players?

difficult choice, as they are great options. You are however taking a -8 to bring in players lots of people already own

      Kepa
      TAA - Chilwell - Rice
      Hazard - Brooks - Salah - Mané(C)
      Vardy-Wilson-Higuain

      subs: Aké - Bacuna
