FFScout all set for latest Charity Cup

The third instalment of the Fantasy Football Scout Charity Cup takes place today.

Following the success of the first two competitions in February and November 2018, which featured around 80 players and raised over £2,000 for the Melanoma Research Foundation and for Campaign Against Living Miserably, this time we’ll be raising money for the Stroke Association.

Most of you will know that Joe, a much-loved member of FFS and the wider Fantasy Football community, recently suffered a bleed on his brain. Thankfully, after a fairly hellish month, he is gradually returning to normal.

The Charity Cup will be held this morning at Whittington Park Astro Pitch in London linked heremeeting at 9:15 am to finalise teams etc.

The full address is Holloway Road, Islington, London N19 4RS. The closest Tube station is Archway on the Northern Line (8min walk) and the closest London Overground station is Upper Holloway (2min walk).

As always, the precise format (including squad sizes) will depend on numbers but everyone will get decent game-time in a 7 or 8 aside format.

This is real-life football (not an FPL online cup!) with players of all ages, fitness and abilities very welcome.

As with previous tournaments, we’ll be organising players into squads, so you don’t need to round up a team yourself, although feel free to invite guest players to boost the numbers.

If you would like to take part please email peter.kouwenberg76@gmail.com with your contact details and you will be added to the WhatsApp group for further information (unless you state that you would rather receive information by separate email only).

Even if you are not able to play, please donate to the Stroke Association at the Just Giving page which is linked here.

    Thoughts on my team?

    Fabianski (Button)
Robertson - Ake - TAA - Digne (Balbuena)
Salah - Tielemans - Bernardo Silva - Sigurdsson (Dendocker)
    King - Kane (Greenwood)

He’s not nailed in true sense as he is only 21 and physically playing 60 games in a Klopp system is probably still beyond him, so you don’t imagine Gomez & Milner will get games

But he is their best RB, and is an absolute FPL superstar when he does play

Currently my team as it stands. Wondering if I should downgrade someone to upgrade Ryan to Ederson, and then swap Zinchenko for someone else. Thoughts? Cheers!

    TAA, VVD, Coleman, Zinchenko

Think Ralph likes the 4222 and 5atb vs tougher opposition.

Makes Valery a nice option at 5.0, looks like there’s strongest side today if they play 5atb in the prem.

Hasn’t done this 5212 before tho has he? Was always 541 I thought. I really thought this was the year he puts his identity on the Southampton team but obviously doesn’t think they’re good enough yet

He talks about versatility a lot so we shall see. I do think they’ll find the way back up the table this season, guess he’s just exploring his options still.

Goalie is so tough this year huh? I’ve been a set and forget 4.5 goalie guy for years, but pricing has changed and options are weak. Surprised more people aren’t going Ederson for their man city defense exposure and using one or two 4.5 defenders for the last defense spot (I’m going Cathcart and drop). Feels better than paying extra for Laporte an$ less risky than going with zinc. Am I crazy?

As most on here I presume, in a few months my overall rank will be lower than my Gameweek 1 rank. So there is an argument to join the game on Friday evening, and load up on high scorers in GW1...ok, you'd have to wait until Sunday as obviously you don't have those unlimited transfers during the week. So on Sunday, get all those (with the usual favourites) in, "knowing" you have a team of starters for the early season.

On the other hand, say you've picked a GW1 team, of which 4 say you'd want to keep whatever they do in GW1. So you've got a max of 11 that you could ship for GW2 for those in-form GW1ers that would probably rise in price quite nicely. So with that max hit of - 40, just getting 41 in GW1 is better than waiting for GW2 to create a team.

Interesting thought, or simply thr ramblings of a madman?!

    1. Tev
      • 6 Years
      4 years, 9 months ago

Madman ramblings. Put enough thought into your GW1 squad and there should be no need for a transfer let alone a -40 hit.

That's not an issue at all mate, it's a long game, loads of people play chips in the first week too so it's a bit skewed

But that doesn't get away from the fact that a few thousand will join in GW2 and still beat you though. Just realised "GW1 rank" was the wrong wording above!

I see your train of thought, that having gwk1's information when picking your team is more valuable than the points you gain from gwk1? But if you truly believe this than you're better off Wildcarding in gwk2 imo. I would sell my wildcard for 40 points. But last season the template was scoring 80-100 points gwk1 and 2. Even if you did slightly worse, I can't imagine you picking a gwk1 team bad enough for this strategy to be viable.

      1. 2EyedTurk
        • 8 Years
        4 years, 9 months ago

Point is you don't necessarily need a shocking GW1, i.e. you could get 80pts then ship out half your team for the early high scoring players for hits. Could set one up nicely going forward.

If you join in GW2, you're basically playing with 3 wildcards but banking a zero score in GW1.

        1. LSK
          • 6 Years
          4 years, 9 months ago

I see your point but I just don't agree with it. I think you are overestimating the value of a wildcard. The people who finish above you having started gwk 2 have not exploited an advantage, they have overcome a disadvantage. They've played significantly better than you/been significantly more lucky than you, throughout the season. If 1 or 2 people who start after gwk1 beat you then well done to them, but significantly more than that would have entered late, had that extra information and still not been able to make up the difference.

Like I said, if you have that mindset, then wildcarding gwk2 is your best bet, or 8-12 points in hits over the first 2 weeks if you must, but taking a -40 or starting late will not give an advantage imo.

What player under 6m do you think will a gem so to speak?

I’m going for Max Meyer at 5.5. Been given a role behind the striker in preseason and after a disappointing season he’s probably looking to kick on. Zaha’s possible departure will pin more importance on him to provide and score.

Doesn’t have to be prolific to justify 5.5. A role behind the striker can lead to more goal contributions and goals.

If zaha goes he is the one. With arsenal getting Pepe don’t think that will happen. No layers looks any use under 6m in midfield or attack. Norwood or another Sheffield lad could do it but there is nothing impressive on offer at all in that range

      Ings, JWP, Yarmo, Adams, Robinson

      1. Tev
        • 6 Years
        4 years, 9 months ago

Won't be JWP. Yarmo has great potential, didn't realise he was £6m, just not convinced he's nailed initially so it's a wait and see for me.

        1. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus
          • 14 Years
          4 years, 9 months ago

          Why so dismissive of JWP?

He’s started 18 of 19 premier league games under hasssenhutl

He’s scored 7 goals in those 18 games

          Including scoring in 6 games out of 9 (!) between GW22 & GW30

He got over 75 points in those 18 games (nearly 4 PPG) which if ou extrapolate to a 38 game season has him north of 150 points easily

He’s one of the best dead ball specialists in the league, and is lethal from long range...

He’s not going to score 250 points, but he looks set to make his price tag look very kind indeed imo

He's just not a 7.5-8.0 player at all imo. Decent stats in those 18 games but long range goals don't tend to keep flying in again and again. That 9 game streak you referred to was a bit of a fluke in my opinion, especially as he was playing quite deep (sometimes right back) throughout.

            1. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus
              • 14 Years
              4 years, 9 months ago

Correct he’s not a 7.5-8.0 player... yet... but there’s a possibility (not a guarantee) that he could be in future was the point 🙂

Long range goals actually DO tend to keep flying in again & again... if they are being scored by someone who is clearly an above average finisher from range 🙂

Of the 18 games he played 8 as an AM, 5 as an RM, 4 as a CM, and 1 as a DM... when did he play RB?

9 games is a also a pretty long-ish span to be called a fluke... (scored in 6 of those 9, not 1, or 2 or even 3 or 4 or 5... 6 times) I’m not seeing a very convincing case from you against him to be honest, especially at 6.0

But in a way that’s a good thing as I thought you had spotted something I’d missed 😉

Yes normally people use WC gw4 or 8 but there are no rules when to use it. I used it last season GW 2 and had a good season.

Other chips normally double GWs but I used Triple Captain when Salah played Fulham at home. Only got one goal but the fixture looked amazing.

I might try and save my first Wildcard until after the World Club Cup this year. Have 2 frees going into the blank, remove my Liverpool assets and then Wildcard them back in afterwards. Triple captain will be Salah when Liverpool have their double. Free hit, Second Wildcard and Bench Boost will be used during the blanks and doubles towards the end of the season.

Keeping an eye on remaining friendlies. I have him atm, if he nails the number 10 role behind Auba, Laca and Pepe he could be amazing. Or he could be a dud number 8

Even at number 8 he can come in handy every now and again. Anyone know if he can take set pieces?

    Pls RMT:

    Schmeichel
    TAA Robertson Digne Laporte
    Zaha Salah Moura
    Kane Jota King

    Bench: Ryan Kelly Dendoncker Stephens

Originally had Sterling-Deulofeu but changed it to Kane-Moura due to 2 good fixtures in the first 3 GW. Thinking of double switching them after GW 3.

    Thoughts on that?

Sterling + Delu also have good fixtures and Sterling may be up top for first 1 or 2. Go with gut. Not sure on King or Zaha

    Here’s my problem with Sterling:
Stats and pitch time suggest he’s going to get 220-240 points. So at best he’s 20 ppm.

Salah (Liverpool have 5 of 8 easy fixtures to start) is 270 to 300 over the season so 24 ppm. Salah scores heavily against pants teams. All aboard!

People talking up Tielemans over Perez. Perez got 146 points playing under Rafa. Under Rafa!! He’s it’s a toss of a coin, but Perez could easily get 180 if Leicester throw caution to the wind and play to win 3-2 every game

Problem is his consistency. Seems to get his points in the second half of the season. Tielemans seems the safe option who, like a budget KDB, will probably return regular fives and sixes. Perez will probably go 2,7,2,2,3,14,9,1 etc except maybe with more blanks.

Did he not score more points second half of the season though because that’s when Newcastle were safer and playing less defensively?

Yes, his fpl goal involvement been decent for a couple of years it's just Newcastle have only got their act together when relegation looms. He's a form player carried by team form so should be fine in that sense with tielemans /maddison to drive the chances

Newcastle had a very tough start to last season. He is definitely a confidence player and scored some important goals for Newcastle. At his worst, he spends a lot of time on the floor and complaining to referees.

Position change too, I think there's a high chance we'll all look back and wonder why we didn't have him at £6.5m

Is there much point in going early with premium strikers?

Kane has Villa and Newcastle at home in the first three, August curse doesn't cut it as a reason not to have him I'm afraid.

True i actually have him in my team! but when i create a draft without kane it looks so much more balanced.

Yeah I'll probs swap him out soon enough for balance, after the hauls 😉

Kane curse is my dilemma. If he doesn’t score against villa he’s oot ma team

There are arguments for and against. I have Kane in my team because I think he’ll start more quickly this year, I like his fixtures and I want a premium striker as part of my squad structure so it’s easier to jump on one if they fire early (without taking hits). I can see the argument against having him though. It’s personal choice.

People still believe that August curse thing. Kane will haul in August and most other months. He is a very good option at that price range. The question is whether there's better options for around that price. I think Sterling for a million more is a safer pick.

Sterling will miss one in four matches against non top 6 sides if last season is any guide.

So then we have choices like-

      Jota
      Raul
      King
      Wilson
      Deulofeu
      Deeney
      Rashford
      Vardy
      and so on
this would free funds to shore up defence and go with 2 premium Mids Salah/Mane + Sterling/Kdb

I’d add people underestimate Kane’s mindset. He’s super driven. After last season he will want that golden boot so bad. He’s going to be ultra selfish and look to net 30+ getting them on early. With VAR I wouldn’t be surprised if he genuinely believes he’s shooting for Shearer’s record

What formation are managers looking at this season?

Currently I’m on a 3-5-2. 3-4-3 seems to be popular. Anyone looking at 4 or 5(!) at the back?!

I'm toying with a 4-5-1 or 5-4-1 at the moment, may even switch between the two based on fixtures. I've got the players to switch to a 3-5-2 also. Trying not to overthink it before we get closer to the start of the season.

4-4-2 atm, just feel like it gives me maximum flexibility, might change though

I think that’s key to avoid WC early. Seeing a lot of 4m defenders and bench fodder that have no chance of playing. 1 injury to your starting 11 or an unseen bench and you’re taking a hit.

Agh! I know preseason form shouldn't be a guide to decision making but I'm so tempted. Fixtures are poor though
