Captain Sensible

Who are the best FPL captains for Gameweek 14?

Leicester and Liverpool options go head-to-head for the captaincy this weekend.

They both face favourable home fixtures in Gameweek 14 as Everton and Brighton come to the King Power Stadium and Anfield respectively.

To help you make the tough decision we’ve got another edition of Captain Sensible.

As ever, we’ll go through the underlying statistics for each of the candidates and compare them against the defensive data of their upcoming opponents.

As this article uses data from the Fantasy Football Scout Members Area, only those signed up for the 2019/20 season can access it in full.

Captain Poll

For the third Gameweek in a row, Jamie Vardy (£9.7m) is the most popular captain option.

Ahead of a home meeting with Everton, 29.9% of the voters have leant their backing to the Leicester City forward.

It’s not hard to understand why. Over the last five Gameweeks, Vardy has been remarkably reliable, scoring seven times during that period.

Furthermore, since Gameweek 4, he has registered just one blank at the King Power Stadium, registering 9.6 points per game there between then and now.

Meanwhile, Everton are without a clean sheet away from home since Gameweek 1 and are potentially about to lose manager Marco Silva to the sack.

Not far behind Vardy in the poll is Sadio Mané (£12.2m), who has a 24.8% share of the votes as of Thursday lunch-time.

The Liverpool man and his colleagues will host a travel-sick Brighton side on Saturday afternoon, who have conceded an average of 2.3 goals per game in their last three away matches.

Meanwhile, Mané himself is on an encouraging run of form at Anfield. He has registered an attacking return there for the last four Premier League matches in a row and you have to go back to Gameweek 3 for the last time he blanked in Merseyside this season.

A long way off in third place is Raheem Sterling (£12.0m), backed by just 6.6% of the voters in the poll.

Arguably, the Manchester City man was unfortunate not to get his eighth league goal of the campaign against Chelsea after a controversial VAR call, and there are clearly some Fantasy managers left who believe he has more to deliver.

This week it’s a trip to Newcastle which is perhaps cause for patience. The Magpies have conceded at least twice in three of their last four matches although they have been much harder to beat at home.

In front of their own fans, only Leicester (three) have conceded fewer goals than Newcastle this season (four).

Mohamed Salah (£12.2m) is currently fourth in the poll with a 6.1% share of the vote.

After 90 minutes midweek, there is certainly less concern about his ankle problems and, like Mané, he gets to face a defence that tends to be quite obliging away from home.

The Egyptian himself has scored in all but one of Liverpool’s home matches in the Premier League this season.

The 5.8% of managers who backed Tammy Abraham (£8.0m) in the captain poll will be hoping for good news from Frank Lampard in his Friday press conference after he sustained a knock to the hip in the Champions League.

If he does start against West Ham then he could have an enjoyable Saturday afternoon. The Hammers have been very poor defensively recently, conceding three goals in each of their last three matches.

As Fantasy managers continue to get positive vibes from Jose Mourinho’s arrival at Spurs, Harry Kane (£10.8m) and Son Heung-min (£9.7m) are naturally attracting some support for the captaincy.

They have been backed by 4% and 3.9% respectively for the visit of Bournemouth to north London.

Christian Pulisic (£7.5m) who has more points than any other Chelsea player since Gameweek 10, has been garnered the support of 3.2% for that meeting with West Ham.

Kevin de Bruyne (£10.2m), Benjamin Mendy (£5.8m), Gabriel Jesus (£9.5m) and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.0m) are the only other options with more than a 1% share.

theres a lot you can say about Emery's reign but what he did this season with Martinelli might be the most baffling. he has been one of Arsenals best players, a fan favourite, yet for some reason when it comes to the league, no. dont trust you. until I bring you on against saints and you have an assist within 5 mins....

Well at least the next manager will succeed with a £15m transfer budget or whatever. Oh..... hang on........

Well the problem is the squad is hopelessly unbalanced. They have 3 centre forwards in Lacazette, Aubameyang and Martinelli but have one winger and play 4-3-3 half the time, so he can't fit him in. And haven't invested properly in the defence or defensive midfield.

I agree with all that longterm but when your back is against the wall you throw in someone to get the crowd going. at least try them in one game together. who know what could have happened? what had he got to lose? I remember madrid doing it with Viniscius junior during a bad spell and he immediately made an impact.

    Couple of quick questions

    1) Mane or Salah?

    2) Depending on the answer to above, who's more essential over coming few weeks, Pool attacker or Son? Surely Pool attacker given high ownership which will be further elevated once people captain them?

    3) Does the answer to the above change when if I have the option of Tomori/Mane vs. Robbo/Son? Already have TAA if that makes a diff

    Robertson, Chilwell, Lundstram, Kelly, Janmaat
    Salah, KDB, Maddison, Mount, Dendoncker
    Aguero, Abraham, Mousset

    A) Aguero -- Vardy
    B) Aguero + Mount -- Rashford + Alli (-4 hit)
    C) Aguero + Abraham -- Rashford + Vardy (-4 hit)
    D) Just use a wildcard and solve this mess removing Salah, Mount, Aguero, Abraham, Mousset, Maddison

Good time for a WC. lots of teams with 2 great home fixtures. City looking underwhelming with value elsewhere. Son looking hot, Mount debatable, salah poor value and less trusted as captain than Vardy.

You could have a lot of fun. My entire 11 is home this week and almost all home again next week!

    1. Tammy > Ings/Rashford/Jesus/Bats?

You probably already know this, but I think it was fairly unwise to remove a nailed player in Sterling when you have 3 major issues in your team. I wouldn't normally advocate hits for a defender but Soyuncu or Aurier would make sense to me. Just pray that Tammy isn't out for long!

For me it all depends on how long Tammy is out for, even a week is potentially 3 games at this time of year. If its 3-4 weeks then that will be up to 7 games. In my opinion that is too long and I'll look to move him on to Jimenez. You already have Jimi so Rashford could be a decent option too. Keep your chin up, you can still get a decent rank. Your history tells it's own story, you know what you are doing!

    Straight Swap:

    Tammy* & Sterling*, > Vardy & Kane,

    My current squad is:
    Pope
    Soyuncu / Lundstram / Tomori
    Mane / KdB / Martial / Sterling* / Son
    Jimenez / Tammy*
    (90 Min Bench Warmers)

True - But I feel Kane might out perform Pulisic if Tammy is out

If Abraham looks like he'll be out for more than 1 game, I think I'm going to go 352 on my wildcard.

So, given I'm already getting Son + Pulisic,

    A) Lucas
    B) Willian
    C) Maddison (and Greenwood instead of Mousset)
    D) Other options

    Consensus on the best option?

    1. Hold
    2. Salah > Mane
    3. Something funky like KdB/Tammy/Mount to Ings/Son/Pulisic (-8)

    Pope
    TAA / Robbo / Lundy
    Salah / KdB / Mount / Tielemans
    Vardy / Tammy / Jimmy

    (Mings / Rico / Dendo)

Both for me with capt Kane. Worth a punt.. time will tell.. 23 goals in all comps tells me he ain’t too bad

I went for Son but have a bad feeling abt it now. He is playing too wide for my liking.

Kane is the one to have, you’ll see.

Definitely Salah. Filter defensive stats away from home for Brighton and Everton. Makes for very interesting reading

Leaning towards Vardy to reverse jinx Salah back into form

No better way to do that than swerve him for captaincy in a juicy home fixture

Vardy the form pick...but on paper Mane has the most obliging defence.

I'm an optimist and think like last week there won't be much in it..both will do well.
