Suárez, Alonso, Aguero and Baines complete World Cup last-sixteen matches

The last sixteen round of the Fantasy Football Scout World Cup of FPL reaches its conclusion this week.

Six names have already booked their places in next week’s quarter-finals but we still have two more matches to go.

Before we look at those ties in more detail, let’s find out the results of the most recent match-ups.

Don’t forget to vote in the latest polls below or in the side-bar of the website.

Last Sixteen – Match 5

  • Thiery Henry – 72.79%
  • Robin van Persie – 27.21%

Perhaps unsurprisingly, Thierry Henry won the battle of the Arsenal strikers.

The Frenchman is the club’s greatest player of the Premier League era and even though his Fantasy exploits were a long time ago, they shone through.

Robin van Persie was an essential premium forward more recently, but that did not stop Henry comfortably progressing to the quarter-finals with 72.79% of the vote.

Last Sixteen – Match 6

  • Cristiano Ronaldo – 76.21%
  • Didier Drogba – 23.79%

Cristiano Ronaldo is also cruising into the next round with a similar margin of victory.

He met Chelsea’s legendary striker Didier Drogba in the second round, but still managed to win 76.21% of the vote.

Ronaldo will meet Henry in the quarter-finals, arguably one of the hardest-to-call ties of the last-eight.

CURRENT STANDINGS

SUAREZ VS ALONSO

Two very different Fantasy assets go head-to-head in the latest knockout match.

Luis Suárez held the record for most points scored in a single season (295) before Mohamed Salah joined Liverpool.

The Uruguayan is remembered best for that 295-point campaign in 2013/14 when he scored 31 goals and assisted another 17 although the preceding one was also impressive.

In 2012/13, his second full season at Liverpool, Suárez scored 23 goals and provided 11 assists for his colleagues.

However, Marcos Alonso remains something of a cult hero in the Fantasy community for his ability to find advanced positions.

The Spaniard really came to prominence when Antonio Conte introduced a 3-4-3 system at Chelsea.

Between 2016/17 and 2018/19, Alonso registered double-figures for clean sheets across the three campaigns, registering 30 attacking returns in that time too.

AGUERO VS BAINES

Two more cult heroes meet in this final last-sixteen match as Sergio Aguero goes up against Leighton Baines.

Manchester City’s talismanic striker has been a near-essential asset for close to a decade, scoring at least 20 goals in six of the last eight seasons and registering double-digit figures for assists on three occasions.

Aguero remains a key asset even now, already on 20 goal involvements for the 2019/20 season at this current point of suspension.

However, Baines should not be overlooked, having managed the same number of appearances in an end-of-season Dream Team as Aguero – the two players on three-a-piece.

The Everton defender’s success was less driven by sheer attacking output, as is the case with Aguero, but by value at the same time.

As a defender, the penalty-taking left-back was able to produce goals, assists, clean sheets and bonus in equal measure during his prime.

    Saw a cracker this morning.

“You have to laugh at rival fans saying Liverpool shouldn’t be awarded the title as they haven’t won it mathematically.

In that case we should be the only English team in the Champions League next season as we’re the only team mathematically who’ve qualified.”

Yer. I can't belive they are looking at doing it at a ppg method. Mean UTD scrape through if they ban City . Most undeserved entry into the chaps league ever. Hope Sheff UTD sue them and hit em hard if it happens

Even talk of UEFA doing it on the coefficient, to keep the 'big' clubs happy.

It was confirmed in the UEFA statement that it has to be on 2019-2020 sporting merit.

So Leicester would be in the CL over Arsenal for example, and rightly so.

Most undeserved entry ever? They are only 3 points behind 4th with a better goal difference, and their form picked up dramatically since Fernandez came in. Would it really be a surprise to you if they were to pip Chelsea?

I think everyone would be happy if the season can be completed, only fair for the likes of Wolves/Sheff Utd as well. It will be interesting to see if Germany get to play games in May successfully.

It would be unfair to use the coefficient to decide. It would mean Liverpool, Man Utd, Arsenal and Tottenham all qualify for the CL; Chelsea, Leicester and Wolves would get Europa League football next season. I think Arsenal getting CL over Leicester would be extremely unfair!

I agree with The Rock though. I don't think it's undeserved for Man Utd to be in the CL next season. As it stands, City are banned from the competition and United are in 5th in the league (enough to qualify) and are favourites for the Europa League title. I personally think they'll finish 4th anyway.

Funnily enough, if City are banned and the Europa League finishes, then Manchester United could end up as the highest-ranked English team just by qualifying for the QFs or maybe SFs.

          Yes, I'm a United fan.

Erm..sheff Utd have a game in hand and are 2 points behind. For UTD to go through when finishing 5th and just ignoring Sheff Utd's game in hand is absolutely scandalous

So who gets the spot? Sheffield United because they have a game in hand, even though they have a lower points-per-game ratio than Manchester United, and a harder run-in? Or Manchester City who are currently banned?

And what about the spots for the two winners of the European competitions? Maybe they should just award them to the clubs remaining in each competition with the highest coefficient?

I think it should be decided with play offs. Let teams play for it rather than going out due to stupid stats and numbers . What if a team lost out on ppg due to a tragic decision that they later admitted was wrong. It is no way to decide anything at all

I don't think it's fair at all for any team if they just end the season and effectively guess what the end table might have been. The last ten matches of any season are always the most unpredictable. It's one thing for me, as a United fan, to argue about whether or not we might finish 4th, 5th, 6th or 7th. There's a lot more riding on it for Liverpool (who should be awarded the title, even though that's frustrating for me!), Leicester City, any team in the relegation zone, promotion spots or play-offs of any league... such as Leeds United, West Brom, Notts County, Coventy City, Nottingham Forest, Bolton (who could massively benefit).

My hope is they finish the seasons somehow. Eventually sport will happen again and they should just have to finish it with whatever players are playing for each team.

City will get ban overturned I think. There's other European clubs who have done similar and no way UEFA will turf all them out of European competitions for a few years because it would bankrupt UEFA.

Finish the domestic leagues if they can. Then finish out European club competitions if clubs can travel. There's spots for preceding European competitions for the winners of both. Main thing is that people within and outside football are well and free from COVID. Talk of giving professional footballers, many of them on rockstar wages, COVID tests and priority treatment before all civilians is putting health over wealth and it's corrupt and wrong.

Good morning FFS, just a small Virtual FPL announcement.

Thanks Ragabolly. I was clapping for the NHS when the Watford and Pool game was first available at 8pm yesterday !

Are there any plans to add attack and defence options to the Virtual Ticker ? It would be helpful for teams like Sheff United who have conceded the second fewest goals in the real PL this season, but are a lovely 15th for goals scored.

It's in the balance given the lack of testing the UK has done, is doing and is projected to do.

Germany have responded very well to the virus, UK less so.

Lots of sociodemographic differences between Deutschland and the UK that would go a long way to explaining how the respective country's have fared during the crisis though.

yeah see what you mean - no idea how it all works tbh, do you test all the players who haven't already had it before each game? what if one of them does have it? what if multiple players have it?

Just thinking, if it's behind closed doors does it really matter what the general response is/was across the whole country? fans won't be going to the games..? I'm probably simplifying that too much

I read that for every game when you take into account everything involved they require 300 people to attend a game ( seems a lot so dunno how true that is ) I suppose it depends on the testing available, there is the morale issue of why they should be taking equipment , tests and medical staff over others who may need it more and also what the government say . I do think it will finish ( sadly for me) but i can't see it happening in June one bit personally. We shall see

      1. SADIO SANÉ

that does seem a lot for a game with 30 players in total, but guess you have all the tv people, coaching staff etc. so maybe it is right. Yeah I guess that's true, and that decision won't go down well with the many people who already dislike football in this country

The players and staff, medical staff including the usual ambulance in case of serious injury, TV presenters, cameramen and tech staff, stadium ground staff, and security staff including all the police needed to keep back any fans who decide to break non essential rules and travel to the ground of which there will be some.

UFEA have catered for contracts to be rolled out but that means noting unless the player is onboard and UFEA certainly don't usurp UK employment law.

If they do rush into this then they have every chance of ruining next season also imo.

Lets say they start again in late June and there happens to be a virus outbreak among players and staff what do you do then?If you postpone again at that stage then next season is ruined for sure not to mention the drain on essential workers and resources to police the games.

Playing games behind closed doors and in some kind of blitz is a joke anyway and would have no credibility in my eyes. When football returns i want it to be the same as before with fans and being able to travel to the games.

I have my fingers crossed that next season will be back to normal even if they start as late as September but i fear even that could be affected by postponements if outbreaks occur in teams. It might be a tight squeeze when sandwiched up against a European Cup next summer.

yeah I don't know much about it but agree - it does seem to be complicating things a bit too much by trying to finish it - what about everyone just playing two more games so Liverpool have a chance to win it? still going to be unfair for some teams whatever happens - may be best to just knock it on the head

Playing two more games just to appease Liverpool and their fans would not sit well with with every other club in the football league i somehow think and still would not sort out the relegation/promotion/CL debate.

It is a real hard luck story for lots of clubs especially Liverpool seen as they have not won the title in such a long time.Nobody is denying that they are worthy champions but it just is what it is.Leeds United and West Brom will also be also hard done by and i personally i was looking forward to United being back in the CL again.

All eyes need to be on making sure next season will be ok.

Yep i do think they should give pool the title but if they do that they have to give Leeds promotion but it is unfair on any team in relegation going down with games left and good for them if they take legal action. Especially if they have home games against beatable teams that relegation rivals have already played at home etc

Taking out selfish reasons i bet there are more players and clubs want it cancelled than not
