Aubameyang reclassified as midfielder for FPL 2020/21

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£12.0m) has been reclassified as a midfielder for the 2020/21 season of Fantasy Premier League.

The change to his position comes after the Arsenal man spent much of 2019/20 operating on the left-flank of a front-three.

With Mohamed Salah (£12.0m), Sadio Mané (£12.0m) and Raheem Sterling (£11.5m) all retaining their midfield classifications from fulfilling the same roles at their respective clubs, the game-makers at FPL Towers decided it was time to put Aubameyang in the same category.

It means a price hike of £1.1m on the Gabonese international’s final valuation from the end of 2019/20, which does make a lot of sense, all things considered.

In his new classification, Aubameyang will now get an additional one point for all of his goals and be rewarded for Arsenal’s clean sheets too. Considering he found the net 22 times last season and was present for 10 of the Gunners’ clean sheets, a similar level of performance this season could mean big things.

However, Fantasy managers are already wondering what to do with their £100.0m budget for 2020/21 considering the plethora of premium midfielders.

Salah, Mané, Sterling and Kevin De Bruyne (£11.5m) will all set managers back at least £11.5m while Bruno Fernandes (£10.5m) has joined the high-end premium bracket. And a reclassification for Aubameyang could also see Marcus Rashford join this group too, given his extensive time on the flanks of attacking midfield in 2019/20… Only time will tell.

Auba as a mid is great, but I’m liking the fact that teams will be different, you’ll probably have to choose 2 from Auba, Salah, Mane, Sterling , KDB and Bruno

Quite a lot of RMTs here at the start of last season had 4 premiums in it.

      Couple of 4.0 defenders
      8.5 on keepers.
A couple of 4.5 fwds and 4.5mid could have a tasty 451 missing all of the mid priced players.

It’s doable. I just don’t like the lack of depth.

Don't get the complaints about Auba being reclassified.

Obviously he isn't a midfielder but then it's also obvious that the likes of Salah and Mane aren't really strikers. There's also no particular reason to treat them differently. So one way or another, they're fitting square pegs into round holes.

Which doesn't particularly matter, really. What's important is how a players position and price fits in amongst those of the other players. It just presents a different landscape for us to adjust to.

I particularly don't get the "they should have made Salah and Sterling forwards" argument. That would provoke all the same objections as the Auba move while also being less fun. Why would they take points out of the game?

    1. Cok3y5murf

Auba probably shifts back to striker position after the Willian signing. FPL lacked foresight.

I guess it is also down to 'us' expecting Auba to deliver the same or even more in this season with Arteta from the get go, and improved squad. He looks nailed to start all games, and he is 100% on penalties.

KDB could still get the odd rotation, and who knows if he'll be on pens with Agüero back 😉

            Yeah

But that’s bad case KdB and good case Auba. Why not vice versa? KdB gets 10 pens and Arteta gets Barcelona gig

To be fair that is realistic case.
Agüero comes back and snaps penalties. KDB will still be one of the best if not the best player in PL, and will score and make assist. However he will often play somewhat deep, and Pep will rest him against a weak opponent.

Arteta has things sorted out. Looking to upgrade the squad (please look at defense too, Arteta). They did beat both City and Chelsea to win FA, and Arsenal usually starts well in PL.

Auba is a midfield does look tasty, but yes I think they should have had the same price tag.

    3. pingissimus
      • 5 Years

      Fair enough comment

If 10.0 or 10.5 is maximum price for forwards and there is 5/6 within that range then it looks ok. There needs not just to be a price differential but a range of options to balance the glut in midfield for me.

Yep. The balance between positions and price points is what's important, not where an individual player fits in to that.

      1) Takes away from FWD options
      2) FPL FWD is not the same as real life FWD. In fact, other than GK, no FPL position is like the real life position. FPL only has three outfield positions, but in real life you have hundreds of positions. Even in defence, you get wing-backs, attacking CBs in a back three, sweepers etc. So FPL would be better off coming up with a set of more objective criteria (i.e. measurable) that determines (regardless of heat maps etc) whether someone is a DF, MF, FWD. For FWDs, shots in the box would be a good measure.

With Willian, and Coutinho around, I think he will have 20-25 goals and 7-10 assists. Should be a 200+ point season. May be 11, if you compare it to de bruyne.

But these close prices for premium mids, implies no template initially? Would be fun

      2. Marmalade Forest
        • 6 Years
        3 years, 8 months ago

There will be a template here in all the RMTs

        8.5/9m on keepers
        At least one 4.0 defender
        At least two 4.5 defenders
        At least one 4.5 mid
        At least one cheap forward

There will be no 343s with three mid to lower premium forwards and a couple of ~6.5mids which is where we will all end up near the end of the season as value emerges.

There will be no premium strikers unless Spurs have an easy start.
There will be no City or United reducing the initial pool of viable players

Auba and Salah to start season.

Auba to kdb likely when City start their delayed season.

    Maybe werner

Thrown in soucek, TAA, lamptey, vinagre and 8.5m on keepers

Wood at 6.5 also looks nice depending on fixtures

      Same early thoughts for me.

That’s the plus side for Auba reclassification - good price point.

Going to hold back on promoted teams until I see all their pricings. Hopefully there are some 4.0 defenders knocking about given the amount of them at the end of last season (at non-promoted clubs too).

I think Puli can offer more value than Werner, especially if Werner is going to be playing out wide at times without CS and the extra goal point. Giroud and/or Tammy will still get game time.

Martial's price needs to be kind too for me to consider him, maybe 8.5, but I don't see that coming, more like 9-9.5

Especially when Danny Ings can basically deliver you the maximum points a forward is physically capable of in FPL (I.e. around 200) for 8.5

Martial may actually be the last hope of the elite forward if he could keep that Bruno linkup going & get 20+ goals & 10+ assists

Actually very glad, that United & City starts later on.

Gonna be a lot easier picking your GW1 squad which is usually a nightmare 😀

United GW1 blank if they reach the Final.

City GW1 blank if they reach Semis and GW2 also if they reach Final.

FPL towers just wiped last years data.

A couple of minutes ago the website showed the 'game is updating' message but the backend API was still serving the numbers for last season.

They've now stopped the API serving anything and its also changed to just text saying 'game is updating' which is normally what happens when the deadline is reached and the game is unavailable for 30 minutes to an hour.

So possibly close to actually launching now.

Ah damn, where can I get weekly points for each player from last season?

Also says updated scores will be available, which should prove quite hard.

Well they have adjusted scores once post season already 🙂

Oh that's true, yeah - they reserve the right to do whatever they want.

    4.5, 4
    Trent, 4.5, 4.5, 4.5, 4
    Salah, Aubameyang, Bruno, Pulisic, 4.5
    Ings, Wood, 4.5

Not bad for a first draft 😀

What a game ruining decision by FPL.

Even Auba would be surprised to see this.

Its great for smashing midfield templates, but it's killing the FWD line. Mixed feelings..

The extra point per goal and clean sheet point, which is laughable for some of these wide forwards who barely tackle, distorts the picture.

Why not just have defenders and attackers. Pick five defenders and eight attackers then make your formation out of those. It’s not like the teams we create would make any sense in real life anyway.

What would be interesting is if FPL reclassified loads of FWDs to MFs and then changed the squad structure to 2 GKs, 5 DFs, 6 MFs, 2 FWs

Auba is going to be super imp this year for FPL
If Auba was a mid last year how much points will he have scored vs his actual score and how much vs other premium mids?

Imagine about 30 more points. He's comfortably good for 20 goals a season, I expect 25 to 30 this season. Welded into my side. Bet even Magnus will stick him in now!
