FPL Gameweek 1 recap: Jesus blanks but Arsenal impress

We round up the key Fantasy Premier League (FPL) talking points from Crystal Palace v Arsenal in our Scout Notes summary.

ENCOURAGING SIGNS FOR ARSENAL ATTACK

Jesus blanks but Arsenal get off to perfect start: FPL notes 1

Arsenal were left frustrated at missing out on Champions League football last season, but there was a lot to like about their performance at Selhurst Park on Friday, especially in an attacking sense.

In the early stages, they were electric up front, with Gabriel Jesus (£8.0m) – owned by a whopping 77.1% of FPL managers at kick-off – showing glimpses that the hype built up in pre-season was justified.

The opener arrived from a set-piece routine after some sloppy marking, an ongoing issue for Palace that clearly hasn’t been fixed over the summer.

Gabriel Martinelli (£6.0m) headed home Oleksandr Zinchenko’s (£5.0m) nod back from a corner, a relief for the Brazilian after he had missed a huge chance earlier on after some good work from Jesus.

As a result, only Liverpool and Manchester City (15) have scored more Premier League goals from corners than Arsenal (14) since the start of last season, which is worth noting with Leicester City up next, another side who struggled to defend dead-ball situations in 2021/22.

Arsenal secured the three points against the run of play as Bukayo Saka’s (£8.0m) cross took a huge deflection and hit the net.

“The game he (Jesus) played right from the start is just a nightmare for defenders. He is electric, he never stops, he is always on your shoulder, he is ready to go with and without the ball and I am really pleased with his performance.” – Mikel Arteta on Gabriel Jesus

ZINCHENKO AND SALIBA IMPRESS

Oleksandr Zinchenko put in a solid shift for Arsenal at left-back, producing a 12-point haul via an assist, clean sheet and maximum bonus.

During the match, he registered one shot in the box and created two chances for his team-mates, whilst his movement often saw him invert as Arsenal settled into a 3-2-4-1 shape in possession.

And it worked very well for the most part, with Martinelli and Jesus linking up nicely in the final-third.

Above: Arsenal’s average position map v Crystal Palace in Gameweek 1, featuring no 35 Oleksandr Zinchenko

“Both of them (Jesus and Zinchenko), the way we started shows how hungry they are, the risks they take, the initiative they give in the game. They are really big additions for us. That is something he (Zinchenko) gives, that ability and versatility – and it is something we don’t have.” – Mikel Arteta

Elsewhere, French defender William Saliba (£4.5m) made his first start in an Arsenal shirt and was excellent, while Aaron Ramsdale (£5.0m) made two important saves to deny Odsonne Edouard (£5.5m) and Eberechi Eze (£5.5m), ensuring the Gunners clean sheet was kept intact.

“Wili (Saliba) was phenomenal – his relationship with Gabriel, his understanding with the back four, for him to play his first Premier League game away from home against Palace, really credit to the boy because he stood with a big presence and a lot of composure.” – Mikel Arteta

Mikel Arteta’s side now have an appealing set of games to come, which includes back-to-back matches against newly-promoted sides in Gameweeks 3 and 4.

PALACE START SLOWLY

Palace improved as the game wore on, with Edouard and Eze forcing Ramsdale into a couple of fine stops, but a slow start essentially cost them.

Patrick Vieira had said on Thursday that his team were behind tactically after being split up during pre-season, and it was evident as Arsenal launched wave after wave of attacks in the early stages.

Eze, meanwhile, didn’t see enough of the ball during that spell but improved significantly after the break and should have scored, while Joachim Andersen’s (£4.5m) long-range passes to the flanks caught the eye.

“It’s something we spoke about: we know Arsenal shuffle a lot and switch sides, so it worked well. I found Wilf and Jordan a few times.” – Joachim Andersen

However, the Eagles will be disappointed with their start in Gameweek 1, and it doesn’t get any easier with trips to Liverpool and Man City in their next three fixtures.

“Football is about trying to score goals and we played against a good side. It’s really difficult to control the game against teams that have really good players. We had the ball, we had situations but we didn’t create very much. In the key moments, we didn’t score to lift the crowd and build momentum. That is something we have to work on.” – Patrick Vieira

Crystal Palace XI: Guaita, Clyne, Andersen, Guehi, Mitchell, Doucoure (Milivojevic 75), Schlupp (Hughes 86), Eze (Ebiowei 86), Ayew, Zaha, Edouard (Mateta 58)

Arsenal XI: Ramsdale, White, Saliba, Gabriel, Zinchenko (Tierney 83), Partey, Xhaka, Saka, Odegaard (Lokonga 90+3), Martinelli, Jesus (Nketiah 83)

Based on yesterday I would say White and Xhaka should be the ones to make way once the full backs return

Xhaka will continue to play, so pivotal to Arsenal doing well, grossly underrated/disrespected

He’s a liability and once Partey was injured he imploded last year.

Oh and yesterday as a big, tough CDM he got book for simulation.

White was out of position and it showed - they need Tomi back quick.
Zinky is too slow to be wingback and Tierney is needed there. He should replace Xhaka, but to be fair, Xhaka is important to the Arsenal midfield, to Zinky displacing him isn't a given. I'm waiting to see how Arteta plays this before moving for Zinchenko.

Saliba looked excellent though and should keep his place and seems like a bargain at 4.5

There is an argument, given how Tierney, Smith-Rowe, Martinelli and Tomiyasu pick up so many injuries, that Arsenal play a 3-5-2 using the players at their disposal:

      Ramsdale
      White Saliba Gabriel
      Saka Partey Odegaard Vieira Zinchenko
      Jesus Martinelli

      Turner
      Tomiyasu Holding Mari
      Soares Lokonga Smith-Rowe Xhaka Tierney
      Nketiah Pepe

      Sell: Bellerin, Maitland-Niles, Elneny, Torreira
      Loan out: Nelson, Marquinhos

Going to be one of those seasons!

Zinchenko in my 11 literally from day he signed for arsenal.

Then made last minute change, and moved him 1st on bench.

Leon Bailey of all people, not sure what I was thinking, just thought palace were good for a goal and didn't expect the assist!

Clean sheets are usually lucky. Perhaps MCI sometimes allows no shots (or real chances). But yes, xGC over 1 equals lucky.

Bench points are not lost points, but you simply don't bench 5.0 Ars def home vs CP. I have Bailey first on my bench, but at least I will get real money should he score 🙂

Arsenal were away so I understand the logic to benching Zinc. Palace probably should have scored a goal.

To be fair the assist was a bit of a random one, I had and played Saliba but expected Palace to score too but wasn't playing Pereira or Neco over him

      1. Andy_Social

Arsenal completely controlled the first half. Then early in the second, Ramsdale had a few shonky moments, and it panicked the Arsenal side into sitting deeper, allowing Palace into the game, whereupon they had a few chances.
I took out Ramsdale for Ederson as a result of losing faith in Peresic in the last hour. My mistake was getting Cash instead of Zinchenko, but long term it might be justified as I can see Ramsdale being the cause of a few lost clean sheets in the coming games.

Ramsdale a bit dodgy in the last 8 matches of last season too.

Compared to how he started the season.

I ended up missing the game but don't blame your logic, I was convinced Arsenal would concede in their first couple of games so I ended up not comfortable with a 5m def for that purpose so I moved out Zinchenko. Ended up moving Saliba in when I felt comfortable that he'd be able to nail down a spot and given his value, but Ramsdale is definitely a liability at times.

But seriously, it makes a bit of sense even though it's not for me. If you're committed to booking in a transfer so that Kane gets Southampton and Haaland gets Bournemouth, but you have no money in the bank to cope with a price rise, you gotta go early.

A bit premature before either have actually played but I guess there's an overall logic to it.

More bizarre though is that about 4k people have already SOLD Haaland this week and a similar number of 4k people have BOUGHT Kane. What's that about?!

Not sure if this was already discussed last night but have players always received an assist for an own goal? or is this new?
I really didn't expected Saka to get points last night.
Would an off target shot that deflects in to the net (own goal) also be classed as an assist for the player who had the shot?

If a shot is off target and it goes in off an opposition players, the player shooting gets the assist. That's what happened yesterday.

Bit confused at your question - if the shot is on target, the player shooting gets the goal, just like IRL.

        1. LangerznMash
          • 7 Years

Saka crossed it yesterday, different to a shot off target.

Ah, right. Yeah a deflected cross is the same as a deflected shot off target for an assist. Always has been in FPL as far as I can remember.

          2. Karhumies
            • 11 Years

There is no automatic, reliable way to distinguish between off-target shot/pass/cross from each other getting deflected into the goal by a defending player, so they are all treated equally for FPL purposes. You would have to estimate the intention in the player's head, the trajectory of the ball, the positioning of the team mates, and still there would be cases which simply can not be classified under any label reliably. Why even bother trying to classify them and treat each category differently?

        2. LangerznMash
          • 7 Years
          1 year, 8 months ago

If the shot is on target and deflects in the player that took the shot is credited with the goal.
If the shot is off target and defects in then the defender that it deflects off is credited with an own goal.

So, the template team (using most selected % from the FPL site) was:

    Mendy - (Ward)
    TAA - Cancelo - James - Perisic - (N.Williams)
    Salah(c) - Saka - Martinelli - Bailey - (Andreas)
    Haaland - Jesus - (Greenwood)

    That team has:

    - the two most selected GKs
    - the five most selected DFs
    - three of the four most selected FWs
    - five of the seven most selected MFs

Got off to a good start yesterday as well with Saka, Martinelli and Jesus

Beware the opening weekend! They usually always throw up a few red herrings of resukts or performances.

Last season Man City lost yet went on to be champions.

My boys Watford beat Villa at Vicarage Road, yet only had one more home win all season and went down.

Everton won, looked the real deal under Rafa yet only just survived.

Arsenal were hopeless at Brentford, yet almost made the Champions League.

And the biggest individual points scorer was Bruno Fernandes, as United scored 5! That worked out well as the season progressed NOT!

So who do you think will be this weekend’s red herring? A freak result or performance that gets us all excited only to prove to be another opening weekend one off

Over the season, but not today, I think. Both managers have already got their excuses in early, saying they're desperately short of quality and need to bring in new faces.

Southampton. They could lose 6-0 to Spurs today or draw 2-2. They're that kind of team.

I also think Leeds are going to do better than people think.

If the promoted clubs, I'd give Forest the best chance of an upset.

Liverpool will have to be apocalyptically bad and wasteful to not absolutely muller Fulham.

Bournemouth are pants, but they are at home, and Villa are another team more than capable of stinking up a game they should clearly win on paper, so that could happen.

So what's the deal with Chelsea defence now? If all are fit, would the first choice backline likely be:

    James Koulibaly Silva Cucurella Chilwell?

Im confident in my team. 🙂

Walker is there to cover City def. I dont care if he only gets 6p, he is 2m cheaper then Cancelo.

Im afraid of Salah, but in case Liverpool scores a lot Diaz should also get some points.

Spurs attack looked sharped in pre season. Conte was pushing them hard. I think there fitness is better ten Southampton and it may prove important today. I think Spurs assets are going under the radar.

GW2 Son or Kane can be moved to a City mid or striker.

Maddi's just agreed a new contract, so he stays. Fofana and Tielemans are likely to depart, and the joker in the pack - this is my tip here - is Vardy going to Old Trafford in a deadline day panic.

The "discipline" is the dangerous ploy of opting for Dias over Cancelo. Everyone has Cancelo, but I'm making the judgement call that Haaland's presence will reduce Cancelo's chances of returns beyond the clean sheets that Dias delivers. Could prove very wrong!

There's no 'good for this season'. What you're saying is that people that do well in seasons that you don't are lucky. Just accept that each season's challenges are there for us all to adapt to.

It's like saying that the Open Golf champion isn't a real winner because it was windy.

    Did Saka play wingback yesterday?

No, that was White. But as he's unfamiliar with it, Saka had to help out a bit. Properly, Saka was right wing/inside right. Put himself about like a boss, really.

Can't see White keeping his place when Tomi is fit.

Saliba is good value, but Gabriel may still be worth the extra 0.5

Gabriel was a bit iffy. He really needed Saliba to bail him out. I agree with Jordan - he should nail his spot.
Bear in mind both are left-footed, so Saliba could challenge Gabriel although White didn't do anything to justify ousting either from the centre.

4.5 bargain but I will stick with Gabriel.

      Zinchenko worth the extra 0.5?

I'm not certain enough that Zink is nailed when Tierney returns. I'd say if you've got him stick, but if you haven't, don't jump on him too quickly.

I'm in the same boat. I think I'd be most interested in Saliba. However, Ramsdale worried me - he might chuck away the prospects of clean sheets.

Saliba looks like a bargain. Would you consider him good enough for a 4th def in a 452?

So what is back line when they are all fit?
Is tomiyasu no longer 1st choice rb?

Id have thought he was, so where does white fit in with saliba and Gabriel?

Not sure saliba is nailed, but I'm not an arsenal fan!

White didn't do great, so I'd say Tomiyasu has to be first choice when fit. In the centre it'll be a 3-way tussle for 2 places. I think Gabriel and Saliba are earning it right now, but that could change. On the left, Tierney would be better than Zinchenko defensively, but that's too early to call as well, in my book.

Let’s see, Ksne tends to have a slow start and city mids might take time to learn to use Haaland and not only trying to score themselves

I think it's more about what KKS is alluding to - a couple of hauls from sub-premium or premium midfielders is going to prompt top-heavy teams into readjusting.
