FPL notes: Kane and Keane score, both sides see red

We continue our analysis of the Gameweek 29 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) action in our Scout Notes series.

Here, we focus on the Monday night meeting between Everton and Tottenham Hotspur at Goodison Park.

Any numbers you see in this article are taken from our Premium Members Area, where you can access Opta player and team data from every single Premier League fixture.

Haaland Foden

Two red cards were quickly followed by two goals, as Michael Keane’s (£4.2m) late screamer cancelled out a Harry Kane (£11.7m) penalty to earn Everton a vital point in their quest for Premier League survival.

Spurs were about to mask a poor performance with three points in their first match without Antonio Conte in charge. A 58th-minute red card was given to Abdoulaye Doucoure (£5.3m) for lashing out at Kane and the forward, although booked during the incident, soon made amends by scoring from the spot.

However, substitute Lucas Moura (£5.8m) put some studs into Keane’s ankle to receive his own marching orders, motivating the centre-back to then fire home from 30 yards in the 90th minute.

KANE TORMENTS TOFFEES AGAIN

On the ‘eye test’, England’s all-time record goal scorer had a fairly quiet game until the hour mark. He flashed a header wide in the 16th minute but little else, to the frustration of his 4.49 million owners.

Suddenly, he found himself in the referee’s notebook for his role in Doucoure’s sending off. Whilst the Mali international deserved red, Kane certainly made a meal of the facial contact.

He entered this match with 14 goals from 15 league meetings with the Toffees, joint with Arsenal as his second-favourite opponent, so it wasn’t a huge surprise to see him get his moment soon after. Cristian Romero (£4.9m) was tripped in the box, allowing Kane to send Jordan Pickford (£4.4m) the wrong way from the penalty spot.

BITS AND PIECES

Apart from James Tarkowski (£4.2m), no other participant has over 2% ownership inside the top 100k, so there wasn’t much else of FPL interest. It was almost a clean sheet for Spurs and Clement Lenglet’s (£4.8m) 38,000 owners will be delighted that he was substituted before the equaliser, meaning he snatched three bonus points.

Tarkowski was lucky to avoid his own yellow card in the first half for a lunge on Kane, whilst Son Heung-min (£11.6m) continued his under-par season by having no goal attempts and an expected goal involvement (xGI) tally of just 0.02.

At least Spurs were able to welcome back goalkeeper Hugo Lloris (£5.4m) after missing almost two months because of a knee injury. He made five saves here, culminating in a crucial tip over the bar from Idrissa Gana Gueye (£4.8m).

Those who couldn’t take part included hamstring victim Ben Davies (£4.8m) and the unfit Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£7.9m), with Nathan Patterson (£3.9m) not involved despite two cameos for Scotland over the international break. Meanwhile, Brazilian forward Richarlison (£8.4m) was unable to make a return to his former club due to a muscle injury.

Everton XI: Pickford; Coleman (Mykolenko 77′), Tarkowski, Keane, Godfrey; Iwobi, Doucoure, Gana (Davies 84′), Onana (Garner 84′), McNeil; Gray (Simms 77′)

Tottenham XI: Lloris; Romero, Dier, Lenglet (Sanchez 77′); Porro, Hojbjerg, Skipp, Perisic; Kulusevski, Son (Lucas Moura 82′); Kane

So many post on twitters of people boasting about bench boost points when they put players like Brighton mids, toney etc on bench & arsenal defenders & single GW players in starting 11!
Even when people point that's not your real bench they don't seem to get it

My bench has Toney, Watkins & Mitoma on it with Kane, Saka & Mee starting. It's always nice to think you've actually nailed a BB 😀

Lol atleast you know you put good players on bench on purpose.

There's genuinely other people claiming the chip has gotten over 30 points, when they've not put the weakest players on bench

Yeah i always try and line mine up with the actual worst players of the week, so i can get a fair idea of how successful it was.

So i'm on 18 with DDG and Botman left. I consider 2 returns a success so i've reached that, and my highest bench score of the season so far has been 20 so i look like i'm surpassing that at least.

I put doublers "on my bench" but I know my actual bench is Neto, White, Saka and Kane. 16pts + Neto tonight, can't really complain honestly especially given the way the Arsenal and Spurs games went. Just have to hope Neto has a decent game tonight to ease the pain of picking him over Martinez

Do you think KDB is hitting form now, or is it just that he performs better without Haaland? The 3 games that Haaland hasn't started (FUL lei LIV) he's got 2G 2A, 31pts. Those games aside, his recent record isn't too impressive. But then I haven't actually been watching aa closely as usual lately so I'm not too sure.

I mean, surely not.. They want to get into Europe so they're gonna want to at least surely start their strongest team? Maybe early subs if all wrapped up.

was watching the everton spurs game with some of my nephews yesterday, they are 9/10 ish and it was the first time i was really conscious of them soaking up what they are seeing on the screen from superstars like kane. not the goal scoring but his pathetic antics during the dacoure red . dacoure deserved to be sent off but seeing kane act like he did and know people their age who love football and play football and who will more than likely try to 'emulate' kane for this nonsense when the play their under 10s/12s matches is sad.
And thats on top of Gakpo trying what he did against city and mitrovic and sliva a few weeks ago. it might seem like really bad few weeks in terms of the examples players and mamagers are setting for the younger generation but it seems about normal for me. refs being abused and hounded, players demanding cards, feinging injury, trying to engineer fouls and steal goals (thats essentiall what your doing when you win a pen) what will happen is that your now going to get a ready made set of players playing in ten years where all this is second nature to them.

Couldn't agree more with what you've said. I referee my boys U12 matches and see this every week. Diving, feigning injury, wrestling each other at corners, mouthing off to the ref, time wasting. They've learned it all from watching Prem players do it on TV and it's a very sad state of affairs.

Agreed with everything you said. That's one thing I hate most about football in general, the play-acting. The dives, the flopping. It's ridiculous and sooo ugly.

tbf to Kane I think players do it now because they don't trust the refs to give it without them going down. I remember a situation with Foden where he got fouled in the box but tried to stay up and they said that because he didn't go down it wasn't a penalty. I'm pretty sure every single player in the premier league would have gone down like Kane did and that's because of how bad the standard of refereeing is currently

thats partly an excuse and the refereeing needs to improve but it doesnt justify it. VAR should be able to make a decision as it is hard for refs to see this in normal time and if a hand is raised to anyones face with force-pushed or grabbed- they have to go even if the player doesnt fall around in agony.

I’ve been calling for referees to be issued with jousting sticks for years, would soon put a stop to this nonsense. Happy to compromise though with a mace or two.

Kane said years ago that Mou wanted him to playact and dive like that to get freekicks and pens, He's still doing it and gets away with it .

Lots of chatter online about Kane’s reaction to getting clawed in the face last night.

I’m not defending him, he quite clearly was play acting and this should not be happening on the pitch at the rate it is.

However, I think it’s simply another symptom of inadequate refereeing standards in top-level football. You shove an opponent in the face and you should walk, but it is quite often ignored unless theatrics happen (Ayew on Fred a few weeks ago for example)

    1. Nate(U)dog(ie)
      • 3 Years

I think this is the big problem, definitely not defending him at all because he's absolutely one of the biggest playactors around which sickens me because I love watching a player as incredibly talented as him play. But we have seen on so many occasions before that if a player just stands and takes something like that that it's often ignored or not punished sufficiently because the reaction isn't there. I saw a close-up of that and of Dembele doing the same to Diego Costa a number of years ago and both looked like attempts to eye gouge, Dembele got a 6 game suspension, wouldn't have been surprised to see Doucoure get a yellow card and nothing more if Kane just stood and told the ref what happened.

In relation to the post directly above it's never nice to see it and the affect it can have on kids watching games, yet it's similar with penalty calls, players so often get fouled but are honest and don't get the call, resulting in them next time throwing themselves down under any contact as they're anticipating they need to do it. It's an unhealthy cycle that won't ever be fixed until simulation is properly dealt with (why did Gakpo not get booked if that wasn't a penalty? He threw his leg in-between the player's leg attempting to deceive the ref) or these types of events are dealt with without player's having to feign injury in order to ensure the offender is punished

in all my time watching football ive not seen something as deliberate and manufactured as what Gapko tried against city in terms of trying to move your leg into an opponent. yes players have tried this before-including Kane- but this seemed rehearsed to the point of absurdity (maybe the players are aware now of what things look like slowed down on a screen?) but he wasnt booked so he'll try it again soon and it may work next time .

I don't necessarily see a problem with players trying to win penalties and free kicks as it's a skill in itself. For example Grealish is a master of tempting players to stick a leg out and using it to win fouls, just because you pre empt the defender fouling you doesn't mean your deceiving the ref

          1. boc610
            • 12 Years

sorry but thats absolute horsesh*t and its not a skill. grealish is fouled becasue of how skillfull he is as a footballer so its not cheating. if a player fouls him thats on them. its all within the rules. what gapko tried is not the same becasue its actual cheating. no one touched him.

of course it's a skill, that's why some players are able to win more fouls etc. Look at the penalty Grealish won against Villa, delays his run and leaves his leg so that the player fouls him. Like it or not it's part of the game now and some players have developed their game so that they purposely win fouls

how do you not see that were not talking about the same thing? . leaving a leg out to tempt a player as you call it-and then that player actually fouling you is totally different to running into the box and throwing your leg back into the player to make it look like he fouled you which is what gapko did. thats cheating. what your describing is just a smart use of your body shape and timing. its within the rules. ive no issue with that. the onus is on the defender tackle grealish fairly.

I do have a good deal of sympathy for referees in situations such as this. Their job is to apply the laws of the game and they should not have to determine the extent to which a player is cheating. I have long thought that there should be retrospective bans for players deemed to have obviously cheated based on match recordings. It would soon put an end to it .

The game is played at pace which makes it very difficult for a ref to pick things up in a split second judgement

Kane doesn't double. Salah does. See if Haaland is fit then Kane could be sacrificed but he will still consistently get returns. We are yet to discover if Haaland will be prioritised for Champions League games. Remember at the start of the season Pep said he would be rested - that never actually materialised.

        why save FT for later?

Depends on current team tbh. Wouldnt really want to triple on any of those teams.

Maybe you can navigate with FTs till 33 and WC34? Some of the teams are likely to be on beach by that time.

      1. NABIL - FPL otai

Think my team is okay for now but money is all over the team due to BB29. Need to downgrade the likes of Darwin, Mee and Mbeumo to get a solid XI for the run in.

Hmm WC 34 is interesting. I think ARS & MCI will fight tooth and nail, so a triple up on them is high on my agenda, regardless of MCI progress in UCL.

BHA might be on the beach so thats a worry.

Think there's 2 main routes, and it might depend on how heavy you want to go on Liverpool & City. Could FH34 if you don't want triple Liverpool and City punts (e.g. Stones/Grealish) in your core team, and use the WC to set up a more balanced squad that maybe still includes 2+ Arsenal. Or the more common FH32 & use the WC to set yourself up for DGW34

      1. NABIL - FPL otai
        • 11 Years

yeah youre right its basically those two routes. If I don't FH32, not sure how I am going to navigate 32 right now. I'd love to have triple City, and at least double Liv for DGW34. Getting the right 3 City would be tricky but at least Haaland & Grealish look like shoe in.. So maybe WC34 suits me.

        Thanks all
