The Community Round Up

With the football season still more than three weeks away (24 days and counting), community members have been filling time tweaking their teams, pouring over last season’s statistics and still pondering how on earth they are going to fit both Robin Van Persie and Gareth Bale into their sides. We take a look back at some of last week’s Hot Topics and also find out the latest from our community’s leagues.

Hottest Topics

With the Bale and Van Persie discussions rumbling on, Matt decided to take a different approach to the debate. His pictoral look at the options for those considering one, or even both, really caught our eye. Meanwhile Lateriser12 has been wondering whether we can really afford to be without both, given the way they hog their respective team’s points.

Those following Triggerlips’ financial advice are unlikely to be able to afford both Van Persie or Bale. Referring to the first few weeks he suggests financial prudence, keeping money in the bank and protecting investments. This advice could be key to navigating through the choppy waters of the first few Gameweeks in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game and avoiding having to wildcard early on.

The Rate My Teams (RMT) are coming in thick and fast as the season launch approaches and Super Hans was on hand with some wise words, advising us to sometimes go with our gut instinct so that we don’t all end up with the same team – his post was one of the most popular this week, garnering 22 votes. Still on the subject of RMTs, PhD student Commonsns, who is studying online communities’ collective intelligence, has used his research to create a super RMT based on all our efforts so far. Among our own daily hot topics, we’ve also been looking at the etiquette of posting and responding to a RMT, urging those who are given advice to remember to thank their good Samaritans.

A lot of the recent talk had surrounded Everton midfielder Kevin Mirallas, who could potentially afford us an out of position if fielded in a front three. Toffees team mate Leighton Baines has been practically out of position for years but the arrival of Roberto Martinez and a possible change of tactics has seen the left-back somewhat overlooked. Luckily, Forca Inter was on hand to remind us that Baines costs exactly the same in the FPL game, is one of the Premier League’s most attacking players and benefits from potentially far more clean sheet points.

Another to take a more visual look at the Fantasy game was In Tommy We Trust, whose excellent analysis of the bonus point changes in the FPL game have led him to create a quite simply stunning interactive and colourful chart. We’ve been having great fun plotting the anticipated changing bonus point fortunes of players ahead of the new season.

Weston Wasters is another budding academic among us – he has kindly lifted his head from his text books to offer a slice of knowledge, this time regarding calculating player value. His ingenious musings went a long way to helping us find some potential underpriced gems and weed out those overpriced players along the way. On a similar theme Cromulent1 has been casting his critical eye over points per million as a way of calculating player value.

Finally, Absinthe, a regular during the deadzone hours of midnight to the early morning (UK time), has been taking a detailed look at defensive rotation and fixture difficulty. His mammoth piece of research was so big it had to be divided into several parts. Part one focused on two-way options, part two looked at the three way options, part three looked at the options for those looking for four defenders to rotate with two playing each week, and the final part looked at the trickiest of all the defensive options, the Uber strategy, which involves playing with an all cheap, all rotating defence.

Community Leagues

FFS UEFA’s Transfer Window Simulation (TWS) reached the second round of bidding for defenders last week. Top player in the round Pique was acquired by BonZ‘s Cardiff, whilst Berbagod‘s Sunderland staged a remarkable double swoop of Chiellini and Hummels. Even though Fulham, guided by PeppieandFelix still lead the game, Saniul‘s Everton are not far behind and Norwich led by The Shadow are turning into real contenders. It promises to be a very close contest at the top in the coming weeks. Submission of bids on midfielders and striker targets must be made by Saturday 2359 BST. Anyone interested can still sign up here.

      Hi mate,

I really think that it's Bale, Hazard an Walcott.

Silva is a class player and I think we ALL agree that he was rubbish last year and that he will improve this year. But overall, he is more of an assist player than a goal scorer. So that is why I'd stick with the trio of Bale, Hazard and Walcott.

Plus, City attack remains to be seen. Rotation, so many new players and manager, the points may be spread around.

  4. WBA Review 2012/13

    WBA overview

    Defence:

WBA had 8 clean sheets last season. Of these clean sheets 3 came at home in the first 5 gw’s of the season. I would postulate that the reason for this good defence was a hangover from Roy Hodgson who had a good defensive system in place.

As the season progressed the rate of cs deteriorated and they only had another 5 in the following 33 games.

    Attack:

For those considering Anelka check out the game time stats for forwards under Clarke last season:

    Long 25 starts, 9 sub

    Lukaku 20 starts, 15 sub

    Odemwingie 13 starts, 12 sub

    Fortune 9 starts, 12 sub

    Rosenberg 5 starts, 19 sub

Dorrans (21 starts) started more than Lukaku for example due to Clarke’s penchant for 4-5-1 with Long no1 lone forward. He rotated Long and Lukaku throughout the season with Long managing a hamstring problem all season before succumbing to it late in the season. Personally I see Anelka as being a Lukaku replacement and that Long will still be number one with Anelka rotating giving long maybe 30-35 starts depending on fitness.

    Season 2012/2013 Summary:

The story of their season lead to 27pts in the first 13 games (counted manually but should be right) and 22 in the next 25 games (no reason for picking this point other than it looks like their form took a turn for the worst after this point. Again I would postulate that the reason for the downturn in form was Hodgson’s influence tailing off and Clarke’s influence growing.

This tail off in form is more obvious if we pro rata the 22pts garnered in the final 27 games to a full season giving 31pts and certain relegation.

Another point to consider if this terrible form was achieved with the mercurial lukaku on board. With the only real change in the squad being Anelka in for Lukaku all I can see if a season long (no pun intended) struggle for WBA.

Yeah I saw a good few people with them in there and just wanted to post one formal appraisal of their season last year as these people obviously didn't notice the horrid tail off in form that they had.

Anyway this is just one guys opinion, they could be awesome defensively this year but I know I won't have any of them unless they demonstrate marked upturn in form.

I got bitten last season anyway. It wasn't even easy to pin down the starters in defence; realized I was flogging a dead horse when I had to make sideways transfers like Jones to Ridgewell and then Ridgewell to Olsson...and didn't even reap the rewards.

I don't demi but that is a very good point.

When they were paired together they did look a lot more solid but they played 29 (yacob) and 28 (mulumbu) games so they must have been together for a large portion of the season.

It would not be unreasonable to assume a similar amount of games each for the upcoming season maybe one or two more each with a bit of luck on the injury front so I don't see things changing too much unless they strengthen as you say.

Do take into consideration that WBA were in mid table obscurity for a long time which would have caused them to drop off in performance in the later half of the season. I'm fully in agreement with you regarding clean sheets and Anelka though.

Yes good point ryan I probably should have listed that as a possible mitigating factor but my opinion is that was not the reason for the slump. I may be wrong but you've got to follow you're instincts more often than not in this game and it does help if they are backed up with some facts.

An addendum to this post would be that as lukaku didn't start much in the first few games I checked how many pts his goals and assists were worth.

It turns out that without lukaku's goals and assists wba would have been 15pts worse off. Of course someone else would have played in his place but would they have been as influential?

Having both bale and RVP really hampers the rest of the team not my cup of tea tbh but could work out for u. Is Anelka nailed? Last season West Brom only played one out-and out striker most of the time don't know if he will start ahead of Long at least right away. I would downgrade marshall to a 4.0 definitely and play Ming every week u just wasting 0.5 on a keeper you never gonna play. I would then upgrade Anelka to Jrod.

Cheers! I think Anelka should play ahead of long, he is the highest paid player there and they aren't going to pay that much for a bench warmer. I like to have a backup keeper who plays just incase, and because I can see people transfering out non playing keepers and i don't want to lose value.

Its been postponed and not brought forward. Without the super cup or whatever it is there is plenty of opportunities to play it before CL starts. Plus I am assuming that the fixtures team have already decided that Chelsea will be knocked out in the CL group stage anyway.

Setting aside the probable minimum 9.0 for 2 playing goalies and playing 3-4-3 and benching 2 x 4.0 defs and 1 x 4.5 mid leaves you with 78.5 for your 10 outfield players.
3 defs is minimum 12.0 million.
4 mids is minimum 18.0 million.
3 forwards is minimum 13.5 million.
So getting a full team out costs a minimum 43.5 of your 78.5 outfield playing budget leaving you with 35 million to spend upgrading those from the minimum priced players.

Lets be generous and assume there will be 10 minimum priced players who get 20 points per million (and we could find them all).
So your base def will score 80 and base mids and forwards 90.
Taking the 3 highest scoring defs last year their combined score was 472 less the base score of 240 meaning you gained 232 points for an increased outlay of 8.5 million above base price. This divides out at 27.29 points per mill spent above base price.
Taking the best 4 mids their score was 860 less the base score of 360 leaves an increase of 500 points for an outlay of 24.0 million. This is 20.83 points per million extra above base.
Taking the best 3 forward their score was 661 less the base score of 270 leaves an increase of 391 points for an outlay of 19 million. This is 20.58 points per million above base.

So every extra million spent on defs gained 27.3 points, mids 20.83 and forwards 20.58 (and that's with really cheap Lambert racking up 187 and slightly skewing things)

Considering you have only that 35 million available to upgrade the team from the base minimum one I argue that getting at least 2 pricey defs makes sense as its probably only 6 or 7 million of that 35 which should still leave you plenty for the showpiece mids and forwards.

This doesn't take into account captaining a player which is why I doubt playing 4 or 5 at the back would make much sense in the long term but I reckon an extra 2 or 3 mill spent on a showpiece def is probably money better spent than an extra 2 or 3 mill on a mid price mid or forward.

At start of the season the top6 only get 30% of CS's. Thats roughly equal to a "fair" share. As the season progresses they slowly make their mark, with roughly GW21 the turning point.

Good post but you are basing it on last season only when the mids were very reasonable value and the attackers didn't score as well as would have been anticipated (apart from RVP and maybe Suarez).

Fwiw I do believe that the cheap to mid price fwd line will be the way to go this year but it is a big gamble as usually the big priced forwards are more easy to predict points wise.

I only took RVP Suarez and Lambert into account, you couldnt have done better points wise.
Anyway its just to show where the value is above the minimum, i think its clearly at the back. The further you move forward up the pitch the lower the PPM gets for that extra spend. Very few forwards get more than 20 points per million, lots of defs do.

Just done my first draft without RvP (already hiding behind the couch) thoughts?

    Boruc/Mannone

Clichy --- Collins --- Toure (clyne chester)

    Nolan --- Bale (c) --- Snodgrass --- Walcott --- Mirallas

    Aguero --- Sturridge (dobbie)

Went for clichy over zab due to richards pushing for rb slot and clichy has no competition there

A, particularly as the idea that Lambert may be usurped is becoming ever popular. 🙁

Neither really. Not fancying Nolan without Carrol, J-Rod not nailed on either. J.Cole not nailed on, doesn't play 90 minutes. Lambert a good shout mind you, he's on my watchlist

Is the general consensus that as far as the cheap 5th midfielder goes, if you've only got 4.5/5m, Koren is the best bet?

    Cheers!

I think it's hard for anyone to know - they are newly promoted and thus we can't tell how well their defences will stand up. Look at their opening fixtures and their records last season.

Not fully formulated but looking like mig, boruc, kolo, luiz, clyne, garrido/turner, collins/4.0m.

Tbh I have not really done any real otation work on the defence yet as I don't want to get a settled team and then tear it all up due to some big name striker joining chelsea/arsenal for example.

He's an unknown quantity, I think that's the issue. People have had time to think things through and may have gone for 'safer' options. I think he's got potential, I wouldn't let it bother you. Plus the ownership going down is no bad thing - if it turns out a bad choice, his price can't fall too badly.

He was in a load of autopick teams due to his price I guess.

Personally I think he will be lucky to get 10 goals in EPL but take the gamble if you want. If he doesn't start well then the gamblers will be jumping to the first player to get a dbl like petric last year and you will lose value on him quiet quickly I would think as it will be only active players that will even know about him and they will be the quickest to move if he is not cutting it.

        Boruc - Foster

        Toure - Turner - Clyne/Fonte - Collins 4.5/4.0 (any ideas?)

        Coutinho - Bale - Wally - Sissoko - Hazard

        Berba - Anelka - Giroud

Get a £4.0m filler, such as Parr or Chester.
Downgrade Coutinho and Sissoko and upgrade your attack.
