The Community Round Up

Our community writers have been on fine form over the past week, presenting us with one of the busiest periods for articles on record.

Fantasy Premier League Bonus Point changes, squad rotation and goalkeeper selection were among the array of issues assessed. It was also a bumper week for Hot Topics, as we look back on discussions on Fantasy football’s unofficial achievements, the best premium players on offer and also welcome the youngest new recruit to the Fantasy Football Scout family.

The Community Articles

The changes to Fantasy Premier League’s Bonus Point System (BPS) was the subject of The 3rd Turd’s impressive research this week. Incredibly he has managed to configure next season’s changes to last season’s games to find out just who will be the winners and losers when it comes to bonus allocation.

Another stellar piece of analysis was unveiled by The Shoemaker, newly established as one of the community’s top new contributors. This time he examined the subject of squad rotation, assessing those teams with the most and least settled sides.

Rotation of a different nature was the focus of O’Shaughnessy latest article, in which he considered the best strategy for captains at the start of the season. This was an issue also picked up by Match of the Dan later in the week.  Le Saux Solid Crew’s look at Fantasy Football’s best all round attacking players in recent years proved further, essential reading in the search for the best armband selection.

As Fantasy managers prepare for Gameweek 1, price is always a primary consideration. This week saw a flurry of community articles offering sound advice for those in search of value players.

Kompany man’s focus was the best bang for your buck goalkeepers, while p00sbrown took an in depth look at the budget assets available in Watford’s squad. Chicken Mandy also has an eye on value in his pick of the best Tottenham prospects.

Triggerlips has also been looking at price and the time-honoured tactic of selecting a cheap fifth midfielder to afford the premium captain candidates elsewhere. But, he wonders, is 2015/16 the season to ditch the strategy and splash the cash on all five midfielders? The search for value continued in TM245‘s look at Value Over Replacement Player theory, which considered the best value midfielders as well forwards.

When the FPL player price list was announced there were more than a few surprises, with the majority of the community overestimating many price tags, according to the results from Dat Guy’s Price Prediction Challenge. Congratulations though to the crystal ball gazing skills of Henrzd, who had the best predictions.

The Sky Sports game also launched this week and our resident expert Disable was on hand to offer advice in our dedicated Rate My Team (RMT) article.

Finally, we wanted to hark back beyond the last week to The Sarjeant’s superb analysis of Southampton’s conveyor belt of young talent – a terrific insight into a club that’s been feeding our Fantasy Football squads in recent years and may well do for seasons to come.

Don’t forget, if you’ve got some analysis, scout reports or features brewing, be sure to visit our community section to submit your article.

The Hottest Topics

Later this month we have big plans regarding the steady stream of “Rate My Team” or “RMT” posts coming in. In the meantime, the community offered their advice on RMT etiquette to ensure that they attract replies.

A number of Hot Topics over the week took a look at some of the key names already featuring in many early Fantasy football draft teams. Branislav Ivanovic has emerged as the most popular premium priced defender, according to our poll. While for Wakey Manchester City’s David Silva is a name that should be top of the list of midfield candidates and Parm took a look at Alexis Sanchez’ Fantasy returns with and without some of Arsenal’s key men on the pitch.

More than half of FPL teams already own Eden Hazard but Rattan64 ponders whether Fantasy managers could be better off with 2.5 million in their pockets by drafting in his cheaper Chelsea team mate Cesc Fabregas instead?

A team with no shortage of choice in midfield is Man United, who this week added Morgan Schneiderlin and Bastien Schweinsteiger to a midfield that already boats Juan Mata and Memphis Depay. Doosra, however, is unimpressed and sparked a lively discussion this week after declaring the Red Devil’s revamped midfield a mess. In contrast, Wild Rover thinks the summer spending spree shows a side mounting a genuine title challenge.

Reacting quickly to the form of players such as United’s new recruits early on in the season is amongst the key advice on offer in Birdman77’s discussion on increasing team value in FPL. Reacting to transfer developments is also important, with Younes Kaboul’s move from Tottenham to Sunderland prompting Fantasy Noob to launch a debate on the most nailed-on Black Cat defenders.

Amongst the toughest players to predict a rise in form from are those from promoted teams. Yu Suk Young took this look back at some of the promoted players that proved a worthy investment. The Puntmaster also provides some useful information about those new to the Premier League with this update on his research into new recruits and promoted teams’ players. While Champs took a look at some of those promoted stars that failed to deliver.

Speaking of delivery, Granville popped by with the happy news that this week Mark welcomed a new addition to the family, with the birth of his daughter Edith. While Edith is the youngest birthday marked, this week also saw our resident Southampton expert Lucy celebrate her birthday, which she shares with former Saints star Gareth Bale.

Finally, one of this week’s most popular posts was Bsloebadger’s discussion on unofficial achievements in FPL, such as the Bench Buster, where your bench outscores your starting 11, and Captain Fantastic, where your armband selection delivers returns for 10 weeks in a row.

The Members Tables

With goalkeepers’ stock rising following a change to the bonus points Davejug1’s table went on the hunt for the most prolific penalty savers on offer.

If you’re a member and are yet to get to grips with the custom statistics tables, you can view this movie for an explanation of how they work. Also, remember to tag them so that people can find the tables with ease.

I have one slot for an 8.5m MID

Currently I'm on Mata for United's fixtures and goal involvement, but every day I feel as though he becomes more of a rotation risk in that team, not to mention the prospect of playing out wide 😕

My alternative is an Arsenal mid. Can't decide between Ozil and Cazorla though.

    Thoughts?

In a similar position and I went with Ozil. At least he's nailed on

Ozil will play further up the pitch. Cazorla on pens. Both on set pieces.

I think it comes down to Ozil being more creative, Santi more explosive.

Ozil was my first instinct though

I think Wenger confirmed he'll play there last week which is good

Pick one of those 8.5 mids...any one them (loads of them are good picks)...After GW1 one of them will do well, maybe even really well, and their value will go up...

At that point whichever 8.5 you have switch him to the riser..

By doing that you will include all the 8.5 picks in your choices for the next few weeks...ignore it and get landed with a faller and you will exclude quite a few good picks for a while...

I came up with a squad of 6 big hitters and Ivanovic. Was loaded with 8.5/9 picks in a scatter gun theory where at least some of them should do well.

        1. Dr Dream

Yea they should..and will...the game this season is set up for one, or some, of those 8.5 picks to do really well...the difference between allowing the value of that position to drift to 8.4 or 8.3 in the first couple of weeks isn't the loss of value but the loss of access to some of great picks....does that make sense ?

Certainly. Anything under 8.5 and it goes into the awkward price category. Probably much wiser to have a greater price distribution and greater price flexibility.

Downgrade Benteke to Sakho to allow for a big hitter up front. Not sure you have enough captaincy options at this stage.

Also, if you're going for Pool defence, there is better value in Sakho at 5.0.

I think Butland, for a start, is a good option given the lack of 4.5 Stoke outfield defenders. Have seen recent discussions on the potential for Palace to have a decent defensive record this year, and they have decent fixtures.

Unfortunately I already have huth in defense. Ideally I'd want pants but I'd have to downgrade an attacker or go with two 4.0 defenders. I'll definitely get pants when I wildcard

1.0m but would like to keep it if possible, gives that extra bit of flexibility after GW1 or 2. Fair call on New defence. Need 4 x 4.5 and looks the best option while staying away from the promoted teams.

Haven't seen Lescott in too many teams here. I think he's a bargain at 5.0m. Early fixtures aren't the best but he can easily be rotated.

I was thinking that too, but the way I've gone down back is not conducive to leaving a 5.0 on the bench too often.

Don't know if he's a bargain but he's priced right albeit awkwardly.

I agree though, he should be high on everyone's watchlist at least.

I don't intend to WC early doors so there's a good chance that I'll try to include him. Don't mind doubling with Myhill (or Henn) if need be.

Problem with Myhill is that Foster is due back just about when WBA's fixtures turn great.

I think he should've been 5.5. We were all expecting Dawson to be the only 5 WBA defender. Pretty generous pricing I think.

          mmm food for thought.

          I think more value is in a 5 and a 4.5 rather than a 5.5 and dud 4.

Aside from Darmian and Mert, I'm not sure if there's any 5.5s that catch the eye.

So Mannone, Beadling and Larsson are replaced by Pickford, Jones and Wickham respectively

What formation does it look like? Hope he'snot using Defoe out wide again. Interesting to see Jones at LB.

Personally I'm surprised he's gone with the same CB pairing, perhaps he's using it to judge who to drop for Kaboul (as crazy as that sounds)

Hmmm, Chelsea have so many grounds near them to play in:
              Brentford, Fulham, QPR.

Maybe an old FA cup semi final? They used to be played at neutral grounds that were close. Eg, if Liverpool vs Man u they would use somewhere like Villa Park.

Maybe an FA cup semi like Chelsea vs Tott could have been held at Highbury?

When considering your defenders do this, literally say out loud to yourself how many clean sheets you think they will get in the first 6 fixtures. Do it.

First go at a RMT, obviously far from settled

    Schmiechel / fabianski
    mert - azpil - bassong - Francis - 4.0
    Henderson - sterling - Walcott - chadli - anya
    Costa - Rooney - Lukaku

    0.0 inb

Obviously risky no hazard... Him or costs for now as I see it. And Costa/Rooney up top allows me to trade to aguero with better ease

Don't like lukaku in there tbh

Neither do I like Bassong, may be best to go with tried and tested instead of promoted defenders. Especially considering you have a 4.0 on the bench. That goes with Francis as well

Haha, for an Aussie who probably can't catch many games your football knowledge is very impressive.

You're screaming FFS member stats inside(which I for one know back up most of your opinions) but obviously you can't distribute them. Good going mate.

thanks Parm. I am not a member yet. I've been a member for the past 4 or so seasons. I love the package. Can't afford it atm. It is a struggle to watch games. I didn't have pay television last year but we just got it installed recently with the sports package (free to air tv doesn't broadcast it). And before you ask why I cant afford FFS membership and Pay TV, Telstra is weird and getting Foxtel didn't cost us any extra

I was referring more to the time zone issues rather than having pay TV but either way my point stands, I'm very impressed by your football knowledge.

Watching a few games early on next season and using the members data(if you get it) will make the podcast a lot more smoother in terms of fine tuning your data analysis with more real life application. Looking forward to it.

I actually like your podcast, just a few things need ironing out.
Top tip: if you are about to say "er" take a breath and don't say it. It makes you sound unconfident. Classic interview techniques.
I repeat, do not say "er" or "um".
Trying not to be too critical but I hope its helpful.

Another fine suggestion. He's expensive at 9.5, but potentially worth it? Benteke at 1m cheaper could find similar returns i suppose.

Wait and see who gets more minutes pre-season. The CB pairing is anyone's guess right now. Matthews would look to be first choice RB, but changes to BPS could favour the CBs.

Suppose you'd have to go for Matthews then, as any of the CBs could see you pick the non-starter. You'd have to assume Kaboul wasn't bought for the bench though.

With Oscar on the outer Fabregas might get a more prominent role this season in attack.

I highly doubt Schneiderlin & Schweinsteiger will play together at all because the United twitter account can't fit both in 140 characters.

David De Gea and Antonio Valencia have minor injuries. Louis van Gaal: "We don't take risks."

      Blind at CB 😯

Mata as a #10 behind Rooney is interesting as well.

Not sure about the shape as of yet. Could be anything knowing van Gaal.

Depay could be up front with Rooney in behind. Who knows. Young will be on the left anyway

Its an old school United formation. With extra steel in midfield there is no reason why it won't work. Rooney will drop deep a lot of course.

Many ifs. Staylor playing against Sacramento today. Says it's the start of something new. Hope he's right!

Kun likely to miss a few GWs but how much could his price rise even if he starts late? Defence is shabby. Hennessey won't play, for Palace, West Brom or whoever barring injuries.

    Courtois
    O'Shea, Huth, Cedric
    Mane, Silva, Ritchie, Hazard
    Benteke, Aguero, Deeney

    Hennesey, Anya, Staylor, Clyne

I think you might be able to spread your money better?
Silva, Mane, Clyne even Courtois (take a Chelsea defender and cheaper keeper perhaps) could probably have their funds better invested elsewhere?

I'd probably downgrade Silva an 8.5 or 9m priced midfielder, as he is too expensive imo. And I'd go with one of the Arsenal mids as you currently have no arsenal cover.

This would free up atleast 1.5m to hunt for an upgrade in defence

Was considering Sterling, Depay, even Firminho. Will monitor them for preseason.

Depay listed on the teamsheet as No.9. Schweinsteiger No.23, Schneiderlin No.27 and Darmian No.36.

    Depay OOP starts here.

Watched a fair bit of him in the Eredivise the last two years. It is obviously a weaker league, but that boy knows where the goal is. He's better at the Ashley Young (cut in from left, shoot with right to far post) than Young himself is.

Anyone tempted by a 5 man midfield this year?

Or if not quite that, a rotating 5th mid and 3rd striker. Something like Deeney and Ritchie?

Deeney would be too expensive if going for a five man midfield. Treat you your 3rd striker like you would a cheap fifth midfielder and get the cheapest.

I'm meaning Deeney if you were to rotate the 3rd striker and 5th mid. Quick example, thrown together:

        4.5 / 4.0
        Azpi Williams Mings Matthews STaylor
        Ozil Fab Depay Eriksen Ritchie
        Benteke Aguero Deeney

        - Works out at 100m, you roate Deeney and Ritchie (or other similarly priced).

6.0m is just too much to put on the bench for a midfielder, IMHO
