Stock Check – Gameweek 36 – Wednesday

A moment of brilliance from Alexis Sanchez unlocks Southampton at St Mary’s, the Gunners deliver a second clean sheet over Double Gameweek 36, but the Saints’ Manolo Gabbiadini fails to find the net again.

On the Rise

Alexis Sanchez
The most captained player for Gameweek 36, Sanchez’s opener in the 2-0 triumph was just reward for the patience of his 27% FPL ownership after a dire run of recent form.

It’s two goals in eight league outings now for the Arsenal man, who extended his lead at the top of the FPL standings after also claiming maximum bonus points at St Mary’s for an overall 14-point Gameweek 36 return.

The stats are still troubling – Sanchez scored with his only shot on target over clashes with Man United and Southampton.

But the determination to net that excellent solo effort suggests his armband potential shouldn’t be dismissed as the Gunners prepare for another pair of fixtures, with Arsene Wenger’s side travelling to Stoke City before entertaining Sunderland in midweek.

Rob Holding
The summer signing was one of only three Arsenal defenders, along with Nacho Monreal and Kieran Gibbs, to start both double Gameweek fixtures. He ended as their top-scoring outfield asset, earning bonus points from each of his clean sheets.

Holding had featured in just one league match from Gameweek 4 onwards prior to the double, but the recent switch to three at the back seems to have boosted his prospects and elevated him ahead of Gabriel in the pecking order.

Despite the absence of Laurent Koscielny, Wenger was able to recall Shkodran Mustafi and once again bench the Brazilian – much to the chagrin of the 51,000+ who acquired Gabriel prior to last week.

It remains to be seen whether he’ll retain his role once Wenger has a fully fit quota of defenders to choose from, but there’s no denying that the 4.0-priced Holding was one of the stand-out performers over the Gameweek.

The former Bolton man chalked up 15 points and has collected over 14,000 new owners in the last 24 hours alone ahead of Double Gameweek 37 and a final day home match against Everton.

Petr Cech
Yet again, goalkeepers prevailed in a double Gameweek.

First it was Stoke’s Lee Grant (13 points in Gameweek 27) and then United’s David de Gea served up 17 points in Gameweek 34.

The Gunners’ top-scoring player on 16 points, Cech was second only to the Saints’ Fraser Forster, who earned 17 points thanks to his spot-kick save at Anfield on Sunday.

Yet the Arsenal stopper was the more consistent option, earning a clean sheet, one save point and a single bonus point in both of his appearances.

Having returned at least one save point in 14 successive league outings, Cech, at 5.3, remains a strong option between the posts for those favourable final three fixtures.

In Decline

Manolo Gabbiadini
Drafted in by over 108,000 FPL managers for Southampton’s matches with Liverpool and the Gunners, the Italian proved a bitter disappointment.

Gabbiadini scored four times in his first three league outings but has mustered just a single assist in the subsequent six as Claude Puel’s side struggle for a cutting edge.

Despite boasting a Double Gameweek 37 – away to Middlesbrough and at home to Man United – the winter signing is now facing a backlash, with over 12,000 owners parting company since last Friday’s deadline.

Having failed to find the net in four of their last five league matches, there’s a growing concern that the Saints are now at least halfway to the beach.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain
Revitalised by a recent stint at wing-back in the Gunners’ new 3-4-2-1 formation, Oxlade-Chamberlain’s pair of assists at home to Man United suggested he could prosper as a budget-friendly option for the upcoming Double Gameweek 37.

Indeed, over 15,000 FPL managers had already acquired his services with one eye on the remaining matches only to watch him limp out of action before the break last night.

Post-match, Wenger admitted he was uncertain on the extent of Oxlade-Chamberlain’s hamstring injury.

But with the FA Cup final later this month, the Gunners boss may look to manage the midfielder’s fitness ahead of that Wembley clash against Chelsea.

    Alexis Sanchez.

A lot of people were looking away from captaining Sanchez, and perhaps even looking at transferring him out of our teams.

Has the goal and 3 BPs made you re-think? Have you (like I have) switched the captaincy back?

          People are really ignoring Kane
With Manchester united priority being Europa, and injuries he just could score a goal or two.
          Plus golden boot motivation .
Definitely differential captaincy choice this week

Honestly? I've not seen the game, I saw a goal and 3 BPs and switched back 😆

Plus the GW37 fixtures are better and he should be nailed.

He looked very tired and hardly dominated. Thing with Sanchez is when given a clear cut chance he would deliver but unlikely to dominate at this stage of the season with this new formation.

I am keeping but not captaining.

Sunderland has never made me think about doing anything but keeping him.

Between him, Jesus, Kane & Hazard for armband.

Always prefer mid cappers these days, with extra CS point and goal point. Also do they tend to get more bonus? Anyone down any analysis?

        Forwards: Lukaku 31, Kun & Zlatan 28, Kane 26, Costa 25, Defoe 24, Vardy 21

        Mids: Hazard 31, KDB 30, Sanchez & Eriksen 26, Lanzini 20.

So, if anything, the leading forwards seem to get slightly more bonus points than the leading mids.

Tricky - i kept and had no doubt in my mind that i would be taking him out. (C) choice this week will be the turning point. I'm 30 points behind leader and getting (C) right will be the difference. (C) currently is on jesus but will be flicking between Haz, Sanc maybe even Kane!

I was always planning Sanchez(c) DGW37 unless an utter disaster happened. The win last night is great news for owners as Arsenal and City can now hunt down Liverpool.

Sanchez is a 100% sure starter unlike any City player so I don't see the risk in going with Jesus etc. I'm happy to own Willy and Jesus but Sanchez is locked as my captain now.

Yes. But with 90 min to play vs a very good wham side defensively.
Arsenal and City have 180 min to play against weaker opponents...

No real re-think here - I want a nailed on guy for 2 fixtures v beach teams who is top points scorer. Everyone knows he is better up top but he proved last night he can produce a likely 8 points in a heartbeat.

I TC-d him and got lucky this week.

Need to work out who to sacrifice from my BB GW37 team to boost Afobe:

      Willy Pickford
      Alonso Bailly Stephens Yoshida Holgate
      Sanchez Hazard Eriksen King Tadic
      Kane Costa Afobe

Would I be mad to ditch Costa?

Tadic, Afobe and Bailly are all problems, but I'd rather only take a -4 and fix one with funds from elsewhere.

One goal in an average performance isn't enough to remove the captaincy from Jesus in my opinion. Think both will do well though.

With clean sheet pts and bonus to consider (which were spread across City's defenders in their 5 nil win), he definetly has a higher ceiling than Jesus imo

Made me rethink the captaincy. He has the best fixtures of any player that can be considered nailed on.

Being a midfielder he gets those cs pts as well - which all adds up for a captain.

Plus as was seen last night his low shot count and dribbles down the wing actually goes in his favour. As long as he can score from his few shots and continue those jinky runs - which the bonus system loves - then he looks good for bonus too.

Had Sanchez as TC last week. No where near as explosive as he used to be. Bit fortunate to get the raw 14 points. Wont be captaining him this week.

Sanchez is not far forward enough for me to warrant the captaincy again. Far prefer a striker who has more chance of scoring. Sanchez undoubtedly world class but he was hardly in the box which is very frustrating if you give him the captaincy. Only a world class goal from him got him the goal. Arsenal themselves have turned into a solid but dull team going forward. They are happy to eek out 1 or 2 nil results.

        1. Econ Man
            6 years, 12 months ago

Still 1.8 shots inside the box per game in the last 5, vs. 2.11 per game on average this season. As a winger the past two seasons he has averaged 5.8 PPG versus 6.5 this season. The difference between Sanchez as a "striker" and winger/10 is not as big as you think.

For me the captaincy for my team is between Jesus, Sane or Sanchez.

Hazard is out because I'm worried he won't play both games.

Kane is a quality player on pens but Mourinho will no doubt set up negatively and the second game is away to Leicester. I'm not convinced there's loads of goals in either game.

Sane - a lot depends on Aguero news but I think Aguero will be back and while Sane may play both still there's always that worry in the back of my mind.

Jesus - Really like the fixtures and think he plays both. Just a little worried most of the play continues to go down the wings. Doesn't mean he won't do well - he did earlier in the season but not long back from injury and thrown straight into the mix

Sanchez - was looking for an excuse to captain. Didn't get to see his performance but scoring has helped sway me 🙂 Fixtures much easier in GW37 (hopefully), should be nailed on, potentially on pens. It's close between him and Jesus and when I've had a Sanchez v Striker situation earlier in the season I always sided with the midfielder and I may do the same here.

I took a non-Sanchez WC gamble (i.e. did not put him in my WC team). It was a choice between Costa / Ox and Sanchez / cheap striker. I think Costa / Ox paid off on net points. I now need to find a replacement for Ox. Am not thinking of bringing Sanchez in.

I think the captaincy really depends where you are in your mini league and which players your opponents have. if you're behind take a wee gamble on someone like de bruyne, otherwise play safe Sanchez / Jesus 🙂

Posted this 2 weeks ago but its relavent here:

Sanchez’s 4 DGW matches are: Man Utd (H), Southampton (A), Stoke (A), Sunderland (H). I’ve compared the other top 5 midfielders in the game in the corresponding fixtures:

Man Utd (H) – Hazard (8), Alli (TBC), Eriksen (TBC), Firmino (3). Average = 5.5
          Southampton (A) – Hazard (14), Alli (15), Eriksen (10), Firmino (3). Average = 10.5
          Stoke (A) – Hazard (inj), Alli (8), Eriksen (11), Firmino (5). Average = 8
          Sunderland (H) – Hazard (TBC), Alli (6), Eriksen (inj), Firmino (3). Average = 4.5

A somewhat crude analysis I know, small sample size and these guys all play in different ways, but it does give an indication of midfield big hitter performance versus the teams in question. It surprised me just how generous Southampton appear to be when facing top sides, and how tight Sunderland were! All 4 teams are on average giving up a return a game to a big hitter though, and the overall average across the 4 fixtures is 7 points.

TLDR: 7 points per DGW fixture is a fair expectation of Sanchez.

*update* With Sanchez getting 14 points from his 2 fixtures so far, he is bang on my prediction. I backed him this week and am likely to back him next 🙂

Watched the highlights and seen that great goal and switched the armband back to him. Quite fancied my Alonso captain punt but can't look past Sanchez now with those fixtures and ARS looking better and fighting for top 4!
Bonus, mid goal points, clean sheets and pen possibility is hard to ignore despite the fact that he's playing within his sulky self!

The fact he is nailed on, the fixtures and the BPS factor all suggest he is the best captaincy choice for GW 37.

I'm getting rid of hazard instead of Sanchez now and gonna assume Chelsea are gonna win and rest players. Come on kdb, captain as well!!

I triple captained him last week and I'll keep the armband on him. I'm not sure hazard or Costa will play both games if they become champions tonight. Who knows how Spurs will react (I have Eriksen) and I don't have enough data on Jesus to trust him as captain yet. Sanchez and Arsenal have something to play for (Champions League for Arsenal and Sanchez as high a salary as possible at a big club if any want him, depending on his performances) and decent fixtures.

People look way too much on "form". Sanchez has the most FPL points this season and together with Kane the highest points average, and people say he is overpriced? People confuse randomness with genuine form and improvement in skill. Just for fun, I did a regression to check if there was a significant decline in the Fantasy returns of Sanchez during this season (from first to last gameweek). Guess what, there wasn't (p=.363). By the way, even as a winger in previous seasons, he averaged 5.8 points per game (vs. 6.5 this season). For those who like models, he is by the Rate My Team algorithm rated as the best player this gameweek (EP=13.64), 3.5 points ahead of someone like De Bruyne. My own modelling suggests that's about right (EP=13.13), although probably slightly exaggerated.

Do we know the average number of DGW players, teams in the top 10k will have? And how many will play BB? And average hits that are being taken?

41.3 % of top 10k have already played BB.
We can assume 58.7 % are going to play it either in 37 or 38. Likely 37:-)

thought I'd share my views on this ongoing dilemma of
          Gibbs vs Holding

          Case1 : Koscielny Out
          The likely defence would be

          3 at the back
          Bellerin-Holding-Mustafi-Monreal-Gibbs

          4 at the back
          Bellerin-Holding-Mustafi-Monreal

          Case2 : Koscielny fit
This is the tricky part, where any one of Gibbs or Holding could drop out. But considering Gibbs plays wing back while Holding is a centre back, the former is more likely to be subjected to rest/rotation.

It's a tough call to make but even though I'm burned by Gabriel I may yet move for Holding given that he's more likely to get more minutes.

I disagree. The line-up with Gibbs is the most experienced and the best one. Wenger will want to keep it that way, especially with Moreal being left footed for balance amongst the CBs.

The hits are taken from your overall score, so say the rules. So he did break his 100 point duck as that is what he scored this week. I had this argument with a league rival and checked the rules. If his score was 98 then his GW score would reflect as such on the GW Score page on the FPL site but it would 100% say that his score was 102 points. So you did break the 100 point barrier my friend! haha

(I know technically it's 98 but being pedantic is keeping me occupied in work)

Took the risk to drop Sanchez after GW 34. Now looking at getting him back in.

Has cost me 34 pts over the last 2 gw's (hits and other other captainies included) so overall pretty rough.

Front 7 had one assist is the form of a King lucky deflection.

            Alonso my only goal scorer.

Smooth Monreal in (although that was for a hit and Mawson would have played otherwise so 6 in 1 really.)

              Rough:
He still got 101 after he transferred in Sanchez (C) and Alonso while having all the other usual suspects.

              Hugely smooth...

              82 points for a 150k jump in rank 🙂

Smooth; All the players I sold on wildcard failed - Firmino, Coutinho, Siggy, Lukaku, Maguire and Heaton. The only one who returned was Mawson who would have been benched anyway. Sanchez(c), Willy, Alonso, King, Jesus, Stephens and Yoshida all returning.

              Rough; For once, nothing!

After a terrible season marooned at 1.6m at Xmas I am now up to 315k and hopeful of beating last season which was my worst ever of 280k. With 13 DGW players it looks good.

101 points, in the 100 club for the first time this season. TC Sanchez. Plus Monreal, Alonso, Willy and Jesus.

Looking for a strong end to the season with BB next up!

Smooth: A good wildcard double gameweek, 88 points all in.
              - Captain Sanchez, Monreal & Yoshida for the double win
              - Alonso and Caballero filled out my defence, for a total of 39 from the 4 of them.
              - King and Jesus assists went down well

              Rough:
              - Benched Pickford and Albrighton's 17 points
              - Triple Spurs looking like being on a very shoogly peg at the moment
              - Frickin' Gabbiadini.

Smooth - 89(-8) for me. Without WC i would happily take this score. Sanchez captain .
Removed jaku,Bailly, lukaku for cech, monreal and costa. Instant return . Was tempted to do albrighton to Pedro, but in the end kept albrighton and boy did I dodged a bullet
              Rough - Gabbiadini !!! .

Wasn't me but this guy in my ML deserves a mention:

              https://fantasy.premierleague.com/a/team/2455411/event/36

              Forster
              Monreal, Blind, Cahill
              JWP Sanchez (TC) Ox Sane
              Costa Gabbi Aguero

Blind and Aguero don't play, so he gets Capoue and BILLY JONES 15 pointer off the bench. He didn't even make a transfer!

              121 points all out.

              Inspired stuff.

51 from GK and 4 Defenders with first sub Stephens for Gabriel - phew!

Chomped 49 points out of ML leaders's 67 pt lead!

Rough: Playing DDG over Pickford thinking Jose would do his usual smash and grab.

Burning my wildcard a few weeks too early and not being able to have any Arsenal defenders or Alonso...

              Smooth:

Rough: 33 points on the bench, with Fabregas in pole position and Stephens benched for Trippier. Koscielny (C) out with an injury.

Highest GW rank this season - 10k
Highest OR this season - Jumped from 366k to 190k.

Rough: Benched Albrighton and Luiz for net difference of 10 points and got the wrong keeper out. So 13 points would've covered the hits I took. Another red arrow and my fall continues to sub 200k levels.

Smooth: Pretty much all the selected players did nothing but still returned with an above average score so there is a silver lining in there somewhere.

Smooth: my big moves were TRIPLE Chelsea defence Alonso, Cahill and Courtois and TC Sanchez. Back in contention in my ML after taking 50 points off the leader

Pretty rough for me this week-

32 points on the bench Caballero Stephens Sane & Billy jones (15?!?)

Triple spurs attack and Kane (c) really let the side down

Still managed 60 points but lost a lot of ground in mini leagues

which was the risk was kols only playing one game. if monreal would have had more overall points
More of a wish - that has KDB and Fab and not Haz and Sane now

              Smooth
Climbed to 48K with 91 pts C Sanchez, good W/C
Picked and benched right players - only Kols not playing cost me few points so overall happy with the score and GW

Don't know how it happened but clicked on the wrong chip and played BB instead of TC this week. My bench definitely wasn't set up for it with Afobe and Blind on the bench getting me 0 points.

              Smooth
Luckily got Pickford and Stephen's points though and managed 93 which has brought me to within touching distance of my ML, and I've got the TC to play this week.

Was torn between Erikson/Stephens/Monreal and Sane/Koscielny/Huth combo. Went with the former for greater overall flexibility in the event of injury. Captained Sanchez but benched Albrighton. 102 points.

Smooth: Alonso, Yoshida, Cech delivering good Points for my defence.
Rough: Hazard (C) without point in a 3-0 win. Wisely decided to double up on Arsenal defence as I could see 2 CS, but stupidly went with Gabriel. Took Kompany out for -4 to free up a space for Jesus...but that's just poor planning and not really unlucky.

              Didn't really move anywhere.

              Smooth: Defence all returned.

Rough: Sanchez aside mids & forwards didn't return much.
Punting on Redmond and now how have to look at probably taking him and Gabbiadini out for a -4.
Son screwing me by not putting captaincy on Sanchez when I asked him to. So he's out the will !!!

Rough, brought in Kompany and Bertrand for Gabriel and Cahill before the deadline, then changed my mind and switched back. Apart from the lost points from Vincent, would have been very well set up for this week but now need to work out what to do with Gabbi

BBted to 103 pts and best GW rank I can recall @ 6k.
Up to 6k OR too which is pretty nice and still leading the Jonty's Millionnaire's club 🙂

                  What a mess. Yes.
But these type of teams "can", with a bit of luck outscore the more template hard hitting teams.

Joining the 100 club as well with 103 here.

Smooth: Sanchez TC, never doubted him! Alonso keeps delivering. A little late to the King party but still happy. Monreal double CS.

Rough: Kane and Eriksen blanks. Gabbi big disappointment.

Great week overall, now can't wait for 37.

Smooth; extended my lead from 16 to 27 points despite him having TC on Sanchez. 76 points was ok ish without WC, i guess. My punt on Ozil worked ok, as part of my -4 hit with Monreal replacing Valencia and Cout.
Rough; nothing really, except having three players in City, Bournemouth and Chelsea and getting 2 assists from 10 goals combined (king/Hazard and Jesus, of which my rival has none). Jaku a let down, and Aldeir hasn´t got as much as i hoped in terms of goals and bonus pts.

Think United will try and kill the game, and then Leicester away is not easy. Then there's the possible hangover effect of Chelsea winning the league. Think there's better options.

Wouldn't know where to start! Keepers need sorting, get Pickford and Caballero? Get Gibson out, Kosc might not be fit, not keen on Son or Mikhitaryan too but that's a -16 for all of that...

Hello guys. What would you do with this lot? Bench boosting GW37. 10 points behind top 1k and really tempted to try fit in Arsenal defender as I feel I'd then be covered in all areas needed. Or do you think I am ok to go without Ars def this GW?

Ox out for the season? If so then Bellerin is a massive differential. Basically playing as a winger. Could easily have had a couple of assist last night.

I don't think we can tell just yet. I had the best GW in my ML but we'll know for sure after the GW 37 BB.

                .1 ITB

Players who should leave imo - McCauley, zaha. But who shall i replace them with ?

                Heaton
                Kompany-cahill-monreal
                Albrighton-siggy-eriksen-san(C)hez
                Gabbi-vardy-costa

                Bench - jaku,baines, zaha, McCauley

Yes hasn't he just. All he got last night was a yc.
Can't see him playing both games in GW 37.

Had my eye on JWP since DGW were upcoming.
Being on set pieces and his price I really thought he would be a good pick enabler along with a couple of assists.
