FPL Player List Analysis – Mid Price Forwards

Having already assessed the goalkeepers, budget defenders, mid-price defenders, premium defenders, budget midfielders, mid-price midfielders,
premium midfielders and budget forwards, we now take time to scan the mid-price forwards in Fantasy Premier League (FPL).

Priced between 6.5 and 8.0, we’re seeking out guaranteed starters with the potential to offer value for our three-man frontlines. Immunity to rotation and the possibility of spot-kicks are also factors worth considering here, with a host of valid options jostling for out attention.

Up against just one of last season’s top nine in the first 11 Gameweeks Southampton’s opening batch of fixtures certainly look very conducive to attacking returns.

The race between Manolo Gabbiadini (7.0) and Charlie Austin (6.5) for the lone striker role could ultimately have a say in getting our seasons off to a strong start. At present, it’s the Italian who has the momentum, having scored in each of his last two starts.

As witnessed last season, Gabbiadini struggles for consistency, though – after scoring six times in his first four outings in all competitions last season, he failed to find the net again.

Yet with Austin still in the mix, some may instead turn to the likes of Dusan Tadic, Nathan Redmond (both 6.5) or even James Ward-Prowse in midfield as the Saints look to get off to a winning start under new manager Mauricio Pellegrino.

West Ham’s new arrival Javier Hernandez has the CV to emerge as one of the main sources of value among the mid-price frontman.

FPL managers certainly concur – over 20% have acquired the Mexican off the back of 28 goals in the last two seasons for Bayer Leverkusen.

However, Hernandez has yet to start a summer fixture as he builds up his fitness, while it’s fair to say that the opening schedule is also hardly in his favour – Slaven Bilic’s side have four away matches and a home clash with Spurs in the first six Gameweeks.

Having plied his trade for Manchester United in the past, the upside is that Hernandez won’t need much time to settle and adjust to his new surrounds.

Steal penalties off Mark Noble and his Fantasy stock will surely rise, yet there is no shortage of mid-price midfield competition among the Hammers contingent when the fixtures take a turn for the better in Gameweek 7.

Penalty duties may ultimately dictate our assessment of Bournemouth pair Jermain Defoe and Josh King.

Defoe scored five of his 15 goals from the spot for Sunderland last season, whereas King was far less reliant – netting just two of his 16 strikes via this way.

Despite being reclassified as a striker in FPL, King’s numbers indicate that he shouldn’t be written off. He was far more clinical than his new strike partner in 2016/17, netting 23.9% of his attempts to Defoe’s 15.2%m.

Furthermore, the Norwegian scored 12 out of 16 big chances (75%) to the new arrival’s 10 converted out of 17 (or 58.8%) – all the more pertinent when you consider that only the top six produced more big chances than the Cherries’ 65 last season.

Defoe is the more popular of the pair by 13.1% to 4.8% and is expected to recover from a minor groin problem in time for the Gameweek 1 clash with West Brom.

Crystal Palace’s Christian Benteke will be looking to kick on from last season’s 15 goals under new manager Frank De Boer.

Yet the Belgian’s allure is somewhat diminished by two factors. With the option of team-mate Wilfried Zaha in midfield at 7.0, in addition to Benteke’s lack of penalties, a price of 8.0 may be too steep for some.

Certainly, with over 22% opting for Zaha ahead of home clashes with Huddersfield Town and Swansea City in the first three, only 10% are backing the target man. Having netted in the Eagles’ final friendly of the summer, though, Benteke could still be worth a short-term punt, particularly for those booking in their wildcards over the first international break.

Romelu Lukaku’s departure to Man United could bring Wayne Rooney or Sandro into contention at 7.5 apiece as a route into Everton’s attack.

Ronald Koeman’s side were the sixth top scorers in 2016/17, netting 62 times, though the opening schedule is somewhat against them – clashes with Man City, Chelsea, Spurs and Man United in the first five Gameweeks may limit their initial output.

But that hasn’t stopped 17% from loading up on Rooney in light of his return to Goodison. Claim penalties and the lone striker role and he has the potential to provide value, though the potential arrival of Gylfi Sigurdsson will force a reassessment when the schedule turns kinder in Gameweek 6.

And Sigurdsson’s future will also impact on Fernando Llorente at Swansea.

The playmaker’s creativity was a key factor in a successful debut season for the Spaniard, who netted 15 times last term. Priced at 7.5m, Llorente looks se to miss the first two Gameweeks with an arm problem, while the in-form Tammy Abraham at 5.5 provides a viable distraction.

Leicester City’s new arrival Kelechi Iheanacho looks set to claim a role alongside Jamie Vardy after a big-money move from Manchester City.

The Nigerian made a quick-fire impact on his debut last Friday emerging from the bench to assist Vardy’s second at home to Borussia Mönchengladbach, but limped off with a knock.

Furthermore, a lack of pre-season minutes, allied with encounters against Arsenal, Man United and Chelsea in the first four Gameweeks, highlights that he is best monitored for now.

It remains to be seen whether he can offer a viable alternative to Vardy, whose transformation under Craig Shakespeare last season saw him average 7.0 points per match following the departure of Claudio Ranieri.

Iheanacho’s impressive goal conversion rates of 28.6% and 18.2% for Man City over the last two seasons certainly offer hope that he could challenge for our third forward role if, as expected, he secures a regular role at the King Power.

With 23 goals and 13 assists over the last two seasons, Watford skipper Troy Deeney (6.5) cannot be ruled out altogether.

The Hornets’ designated penalty taker, Deeney has been sidelined over the summer with a groin problem, allowing us time to assess the impact of new manager Marco Silva before considering his services. At 5.5, his
stand-in Stefano Okaka has netted three times over the summer ahead of clashes with Bournemouth and Brighton in the first three.

Similar to Deeney, Newcastle’s Dwight Gayle (6.5) also has question marks over his fitness ahead of Gameweek 1. Worryingly, the Magpies’ frontman is being plagued by the hamstring problems that restricted him to just 26 starts in last term’s Championship.

Granted, Gayle netted 23 times and also supplied a pair of assists over his 32 outings but those injury concerns merely strengthen the claim of with midfielder Matt Ritchie in our reckoning. Priced at 6.0 and boasting penalties and set-pieces, the Scot could be quick to profit from a strong schedule from Gameweek 2 onwards. The form of 5.0 winger Christian Atsu – two goals and four assists over the summer – is also intriguing.

Up front, Gayle’s possible absence could open the door for Aleksandar Mitrovic (5.0) to cement a short-term role on the back of three pre-season strikes. It’s fair to say that the Serbian is yet to convince manager Rafa Benitez, though – he started just 11 matches in the Championship last term.

West Brom have some fine opening fixtures (BOU bur STK bha WHU ars WAT) but can we really place our trust in Salomon Rondon? The Venezuelan played a part in all 38 of the Baggies’ matches (32 starts) last term but scored just one goal from Gameweek 17 onwards.

New arrival Jay Rodriguez comes in at 6.0 to Rondon’s 6.5 and has already scored twice in pre-season, though there’s still a concern that he will take up an attacking midfield role. Alternatively, both Matt Phillips and Nacer Chadli are also 6.0 if you fancy a punt on Tony Pulis’ attack, with Phillips our preferred choice on the back of 4.3 ppm last season.

Burnley’s Andre Gray (6.5) is another form striker, having netted four times over the summer. But investing in the Clarets’ attack looks a decidedly risky business – all the more so when you consider they travel to Chelsea, Spurs, Liverpool and Everton in the opening seven.

Elsewhere, the likes of Danny Welbeck, Daniel Sturridge, Divock Origi, Marcus Rashford and Vincent Janssen are all favourably priced among last term’s top six. Arguably, though, it would require a run of injuries for any of that quintet to be assured of a regular role.

Rashford appears the most likely to break from this pack.

Jose Mourinho has threatened to pair the 19-year-old with new signing Romelu Lukaku and, should that materialise, then interest will surely ramp up.

However, Lukaku’s dominant 48.6% ownership could forever curtail significant investment in Rashford, bar an explosive run from the starlet.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

Are any of the midprice forwards worth getting?

With many failing to impress last season would it be better just to get a cheap non playing 4.5 striker and focus on premium midfield assets and a strong defence?

Or is it even worth going all out premium in attack by drafting in Jesus/Aguero, Kane and Lukaku?

Which midprice forward are you getting? Or are you happy to avoid this troublesome bunch?

At the moment my third striker roulette ball has stopped on Mounie- it has at various stages been filled by Austin / Gayle. Think its just a case of whoever happens to be in there come Friday evening!

I think between gabbiadini, Ihenacho, Hernandez and potentially Josh King there are a reasonable number of options here.

Also, I like having the ability to downgrade to a £4.5m if none of those options start firing for my GW1 team! Far easier than trying to scrap together the £2.5m upgrade needed if one of the mid priced assets start firing!

        At the moment i have:

        Foster
        Bailly/ Stephens / Daniels
        Miliovjevic / Eriksen / Salah / Carrol
        Kane / Lukaku / Jesus
        (Elliot / Chalobah / Mee / Lowe)

        So I'm happy with a big front 3 🙂

        Thoughts?

I'm thinking of going with Benteke. Come GW3, I'll re-asses, I may another 2m to get Jesus or I can free up 3.5m by downgrading to bench fodder, that would allow me to get Sanchez if I need him or just spread the funds throughout if not.

Either way, I think having the most options is the right way to go considering we're highly unlikely to pick the right 3rd striker from the off

I think there's too much uncertainty and injuries surrounding the mid-price forwards.

By having a 4.5m striker on the bench I can afford this front 7:

      KDB Mane Willian Zaha TCarroll
      Kane Lukaku

I'm using the extra funds in midfield and can still have a sensible defence of 5 / 5 / 5.5

This is the main concern for me at the moment be interested to hear others views.

I'm currently on King at the moment. I think his opening two fixtures are ripe for goals but at 7.5, he forces compromise along defence which I don't like 🙁

Everything below 7.0 looks poor to me at the moment.

Can easily switch after 2-3 weeks when there is more clarity.

I think it's seriously worth considering a midfield of something like:

      KDB / 7m / JWP / Atsu / Carroll

which enables the frontline of Kane / Lukaku / Jesus.

completely agree. With the amount of great premium (£10m+) options, I feel that sticking with two heavy hitter captaincy options (currently Jesus and Kaku in my team) and a make weight (tammy, JRod, Gayle/Mitro) is the way to go. Especially with the current fullback revolution dragging more funds into defence, I'm happy to leave this bracket well alone.

More certainty and easier captain choice. When none of them return its going to be a bad week...

Austin may be lacking mobility but he scores goals for anyone, against anyone, year on year. The same cannot be said for any of their other strikers. If he doesn't start it's only a matter of time, and even then we know he can come from the bench and score every other game.

Pre-price reveal Defoe was my man. However, the price of Firmino allows a viable 3rd striker without emptying the coffers and freeing up a midfield slot.

I've tried to justify Kane/Jesus/Lukaku but it's too much and goes against all my usual FPL rules. I've gone Jesus/Firmino as I believe that has more points potential than Lukaku/7.5m.

Anyone who chooses not to go with Kane is delusional in my opinion. Nailed on for the third golden boot in a row.

Kane has started the last two season poorly, however, so I disagree. Absolutely if you couldn't make any changes to your team for the rest of the season, but not picking him for the first part of the season has been viable the last two seasons at least.

I'm on J Rod at the moment, not because I think he'll set the world alight, but he allows me Mane and may end up with a few goals.

Interested in Mounie, but don't know too much about him. Love the idea of finding this season's Ighalo and having some kind of GW 1 punt.

      Not now.

Hernandez the stand-out but clearly not with WH initial fixtures.

Others could emerge in the next few weeks.

No-one will be going 3 big-ones up top as we progress through the season - as such either it's a downgrade to a mid-price (like Defoe last season) or a much cheaper one. For rotation purposes with a 5th mid a mid-price striker is definitely an option.

Forwards in general are poor value. You need one premium for captaincy options but after that the money is better spent elsewhere.

Firmino at 8.5m is an easy switch to Vardy, Batshuayi or any of the cheaper strikers.

If the players aren't there why try and force it?

This season there's Lukaku, Kane, Jesus, Aguero, Lacazette, Morata and even Firmino who could all score very well, why limit yourself to two of them because tradition says you must?

Last season there was a strong case for the five man midfield because there were so many quality ones from Spurs and Liverpool in the 8/9m bracket, this season people are punting on players like Zaha for one of those slots, not quite the same.

The strikers are going to be the big multiple scorers this season, seems odd to not be (here comes the buzz word) 'flexible' enough to be able to tap into it.

Can we have a separate forum for the RMTs, please? (Serious question)

And add a community service feature in the RMT forum where a "pro" FPL player like, say, FPL Virgin is assigned to rate the teams and give advice on different matters, like whether you should WC or (most probably) not WC before gw 16 for example? (Semi-serious question)

None appeal at all, especially when few can avoid a Lukaku/Kane or Lukaku/Jesus partnership. The third striker has to be a budget, but playing one.

The concensus among Huddersfield fans is that it is not something Wagner is bothered by so tends to leave it to the players. The feeling is that Lowe currently has the edge over Mooy.... recent pens indicate that as well.

We feel confident enough in that to put Lowe above Mooy

But it is also being speculated that Ince may snatch them - as he is emerging as the team's best player over pre-season.

It may be a situation like when Alli took his that the most confident player will simply take the ball and give it a go.

For the time being we think Lowe - with the Ince situation one to monitor.

              What are you on about?

Almost all FPL winners have wildcarded early. Wildcarding during the first international break around the GWK 4 mark has been used really well over the years. Its a classic tactic to jumping on bandwagons, increase value plus the transfer window has closed so there are no sudden surprises like Van Der Vaart joining at the last minute.

I can't stand all this "oh it doesn't really matter who I pick - I'll just Wildcard in GW3 anyway" talk.

Shut up and Do your research. Look at the stats from last season. And build a good team for the first 10 GWs.

Keep your Wildcard in your back pocket for when you truly need it (such as when the fixtures become congested in November).

Spunking your Wildcard early doors is disrespectful to the purists who really put the effort in preseason.

talking rubbish m8. all the research in the world goes out the window when you see how teams play in their first competitive match. w/c is arguably much more useful gw3/6 than any other time. price rises are integral to the game and ur 15 players you have in your tem right now arent gonna be the ones that rise.

Disrespectful to the purists? Says FPL virgin, the second year veteran? I preferred your doe-eyed innocence last year, I think the fanfare of last season has gone to your head somewhat. You're like the intern that just 'wants to learn from everyone' but winds up thinking they own the place within a year.

I'm a semi casual by the way who enjoys nothing more than an early wildcard to steer the ship after a shaky start. I'd love to indulge in more preseason research but a balanced life seems to get in the way. Thank goodness for sites to this to help a brother out when time permits..

As it coud be a long-term commitment, I second the KDB-or-Jesus question.

If both start, is it better to ditch any illusions that a mid-priced 3rd striker can deliver and go for goal-focused Jesus rather than the assist king de Bruyne?

Was reading a post on reddit this morning which made some interesting points.
          - Do we need Kane for a captain in any of those opening four fixtures?
          - If he scores 24 points (3-4 goals) in those opening 4 which seems unlikely to me, is 6.0ppm a good return for 12.5m?
          - Is his price likely to go up by that much? People will need hits to bring him in, and surely some of the other 4-5 premium strikers will be firing too.
          - Alli is potentially much better value, and it's not worth a double up.

          Just to add to this:

Fabregas had higher PPG last season and was great in the last few gameweeks, but hasn't looked as good in pre-season matches.

Willian's PPG was lower but he has a better goal threat and has been great in pre-season.

          Should we consider Pedro?

Which of these guys is most likely to benefit from Hazard's absence?

Pogba doesn't have the FPL potential as the other two. I wouldn't pick Willian because he tends to have spells of inconsistency.

Last season more than half of Fabregas's appearances came from the bench, yet he had 11 assists and scored five goals. Pick him but mind rotations when Bakayoko is fit again (should be a while though since he had knee surgery).

With so many affordable defensive options, what's the best strategy?

E.g. attacking potential (wing backs) vs clean sheets?

How much are you looking to cover the top 4 defences of last season:
        United, Chelsea, Spurs & Southampton?

Do you think any new teams will break into this top four for clean sheets in 2017/18?

Do we really think we should go that heavy at the back? Bar Alonso/Coleman later in the season.

Last year (and I know it's not the same every year) that was one of my biggest mistakes as there were hardly any CSs in the first 7 GWs and I lost quite some time to repair the damage to go back for the strong front 7.

I'm seeing a knock on effect of Spurs going 4 at the back, pushing Eriksen wide and Sissoko starting at RM. I think that, more than the "Wembley effect" is something we should be considering when deciding if Kane is worth the muller

I see people choosing teams up till maybe GW4-6 and ignoring players who may not be nailed till then or who have poor fixtures till then. What are your thoughts on the use of placeholders for GW1/2 alone. Especially since you know you will be making early transfers for bandwagons/form players, we are basically deciding who we are going to take out at that point in time.

        Possible options:
TAA > 4.5 def from lower table side who emerges early on
Danilo > 5.5 fullback/wingback who strikes assisting form
Everton mid just for GW1 > GW1 bandwagon
        Iwobi till Sanchez/Ozil are back
        Okaka till Deeney is back
        Abraham/Ayew till Llorente is back

For me the fact that I can be certain of transferring a player out and not have to decide between a couple of "safe" picks who may just strike form next week is itself a benefit of this strategy.

Thoughts on a strategy of filling the bench with 2x 4m defender's and a 4.5 striker to maximise first 11 in GW1 and GW2... Then wild card to a balanced squad GW3?

        1) Take on the Aguero/Jesus situation? Jesus could play RW many times and he's not gonna sustain last season's numbers, is it worth paying 10.5 for a guy who either isn't the lone striker or is out on the wing?

Is Jamie Vardy being overlooked as a third striker option? Just 4% ownership. Even with tough fixtures, he's cheap at 8.5 for a proven goalscorer. Looking at GW2, it's tough to pick a capt choice and the RMT tool suggests he would be as good an option as any.

        1) what to do of the couthino situation? What his expected departure will have as impact on Liverpool goal threat, eg all Salah goals came from couthino assists.

        2) Which teams seems settled on their starting 11 and which ones still struggle.

        3) where do we find best value? Defense or offense? In promoted teams?

        4) How to plan for Sanchez, Hazard or maybe even Bale?

        1. Liverpool mids vs Firmino?

        2. Who is the best 3rd striker option?

Currently on Gabbiadini as my 3rd ST. Fixtures look good, he looks to be first choice, might be on pens and there are other options to jump on in that price bracket incase it doesn't work out.

Firmino is the next favourite but I personally think the Liverpool mids will outscore him and they might be worth the extra 0.5-1.0m.

        So much choice this season

And how many nailed players do you look to have in your GW1 team and how many punts? Feel this is important with the first few weeks transfers and avoiding an early WC

Coutinho depends on if he stays
Daniels prefer Ake considering Defoe probably on pens, but leaving Bou initially
Carroll depends on Siggy and if they get a replacement, has the potential

With Kane, Lukaku, Jesus up front is mid with Salah Zaha as main 2 midfielders a strong enough attack with Kola and Danilo as wingbacks

Is the power 3 of Kane Lukaku Jesus (Aguero?) too much to spend in attack with the inclusion of KDB.

Similarly should we be doubling/tripling city assets with such great pre season form? City defence viable?

Should we go with a premium keeper (DDG) until things become clearer of who is best value.

What cheap defences seem the best to go with?
        Palace Bournemouth West Brom etc.

How long (if any) are you planning your teams for? First int. break, 5 game weeks and so on.

Lastly should we AVOID Liverpool assets as they play 5 Games in 3 GWS.
        Thanks

Would really appreciate a quick summary on defenders and midfielders who play out of position and also which players are nailed-on set-piece takers and BAP's magnets.

I've always hogged my Wildcard but reading some of the comments it seems an early WC could make your season so again, a quick summary would be very helpful.

Is the early gameweeks the time to take risks? We have the least amount of data to make decisions and team line ups are uncertain. Personally I think we should take a few risks getting players like mkhitaryan and fabragas who may not of been first choice last year but could reliever this year at reasonable prices

How do you all feel about a strategy of taking more hits early on instead of an early wildcard?
This saves the wildcard for later when you can restructure for a more significant number of those injuries or other reasons. It also means you can hop on certain good bandwagons to gain a little bit of TV when you can do so much better in the early part of the season.

        Importance of ownership!

With all the uncertainty around GW1 - how important is it to cover the high ownership players?

Should you basically just put your team together with highly owned players and then slowly start to transfer differentials in as you see they perform? What are the game theoretic solution?

.. And how/where do you think the best managers differ from the high ownership? Fx. DDG is the highest owned GK, but not likely to be en the best managers teams.

          a) go with 4-3-3
3 strong Forwards (Kaku, Kane, Jesus)
          2 midfs rest is 5.5-4.5
          and budget defs

          b) go with 3-5-2
1 strong forward of original 3
5 strong midfs from top 6
          3x 5.5-6 defs

To facilitate a strong midfield is Joselu at Stoke a decent shout given his strong preseason and price of 5.5 or is he just another preseason distractor?

Scoutcast question - Which of the new signings this summer do you think will make the biggest impact in FPL? Also, what is the best team name that you have ever seen in FPL?

          Thanks

Super late to this, but looking at the number of teams with Kane in them, I am now worried about my iron-clad certainty that people agree he starts slow...

So, should Kane be in from the start or is it ok to get him in post August/mid-Sep - historically when he HAS started banging them in?

Is pogba going to live up to the hype?? There's talking of him being more attacking, particularly with the signing of matic, but will that translate to points? Are there better options, particularly if you have spare cash to upgrade to alli, mane or ozil?

KDB v Aguero v Jesus. Really can't decide. I can't leave Aguero out, he has been the best FPL striker for so long and I'm keeping my faith with him. So KDB or Jesus?? Thoughts anyone??

I'd think Pep would play a 3-5-2 most of the time. So De Bruyne behind Aguero and Jesus. If City were to switch to a 4-2-3-1 i think it could be Aguero sacrificed; Pep loves Jesus. That said last 3 games of last season Jesus started on the right. I'd go KDB and Either Aguero/Jesus. No need for 2 city strikers when they will share the goals.

Seems to be my final team.

        Foster Elliot
        Bertrand Daniels Dann Suttner Long
        KDB Alli Gross Fraser Carroll
        Kane Lukaku Firmino

Three way rotation in midfield. Worried about the defense.

        Thoughts?

        Thanks.

Personally Id drop Bertrand to Cedric and save 0.5m, Cedric more attack minded too.
          Prefer Ake over Daniels.
Need Man U cover in def/gk, can you afford DDG or Valencia?
Midfield looks a little weak, Def KDB and I'd maybe downgrade either Kaku or Kane to Jesus and beef up midfield to incorporate either Pogba or Mane
I've chopped and changed so may times now!!

Midfield options are very tough this year. The best options are in defence and strikers. Makes most sense to put the investment into those areas and go with 3x £6m midfielders. There really isn't much option in the premium midfielder category.

KdB, Salah, Pogba/Mkihi are all decent picks. Although broadly speaking you're right: I'm far more prepared to gamble on Richie or Groß than Willian or Zaha.

On a side note, why on earth are City going to Spain to play a friendly three days after the season starts?!
