Captains

Captain Poll – Gameweek 2

The second Captain Poll of the season arrives to canvas your opinion on the key contenders for the Gameweek 2 armband.

A brace on his Premier League debut for Manchester United yesterday means that Romelu Lukaku (11.5) is guaranteed to be among the front runners.

He travels to a Swansea City side that conceded more shots in the box (16) than any side in Gameweek 1. With his ownership reaching the 50% mark over the weekend, he also has weight of numbers on his side as he looks to address the away drought that saw him score just twice in his final 10 road trips for Everton.

The Red Devils’ emphatic 4-0 victory against West Ham also shone the light on two more possible contenders – the 8.3% owned Henrikh Mkhitaryan (8.0), who collected two assists and a pair of bonus points, and Paul Pogba (8.0), who got on the scoresheet and sits in 21.6% of teams.

Liverpool’s 3-3 draw away to Watford highlighted their defensive frailties, but also underlined the wealth of attacking talent among their ranks, with Sadio Mane (9.5), Mohammed Salah (9.0) and Roberto Firmino (8.5) all scoring.

As with last season, the vote for a Reds captain is likely to be split ahead of Crystal Palace’s visit, although with a goal and assist against the Hornets it would be unsurprising if Salah was the most popular of the trio. He is already the most owned player among Jurgen Klopp’s ranks, with a place in 25.7% of FPL teams.

However, with penalty duties added to his repertoire, the 23.1%-owned Firmino could also prosper and even leapfrog his Egyptian team-mate in the latest poll. It is worth noting that Salah may not be favoured by the Fantasy Premier League’s bonus point system, having seen four of his five shots against Watford miss the target.

The only player to register more misses was Southampton’s Manolo Gabbiadini (7.0), who hosts a West Ham side still reeling from yesterday’s heavy defeat. None of the Italian’s five shots were on target against Swansea, which is likely to see his popularity wane despite the favourable fixture. Hauled off after 69 minutes and replaced by Charlie Austin, Gabbiadini will be hoping to retain his role on the teamsheet despite such an ineffectual display.

Shooting accuracy was where Jamie Vardy (8.5) excelled in Leicester’s loss to Arsenal on Friday – he scored from both of his goal attempts. A home tie against Brighton should ensure he prospers in the poll, although he will have to be equally precise as his opponents managed to keep Manchester City down to just six shots in the box in their 2-0 home loss on Saturday evening.

In saying that, it’s worth noting that the Seagulls conceded almost twice the number of goals (26 to 14) on the road than they shipped in front of their own fans last term.

Since Friday, more than 93,000 FPL managers have recruited the Foxes’ talisman.

Sergio Aguero (11.5) proved to be the hero at the Amex Stadium, having broken the deadlock at the 70-minute mark, and he looks to be secure for a start at home to Everton this weekend in Pep Guardiola’s preferred 3-5-2 formation. The 11.8%-owned Argentine could be the leading figure among City’s key captaincy candidates, although eagle-eyed voters would have noticed that the 12.4%-owned Gabriel Jesus (10.5) and Kevin De Bruyne (10.0), who is in 30.4% of teams, fired off four shots apiece on Saturday to ensure they will garner interest.

Involvement in tough-to-call matches, such as Arsenal against Leicester City last Gameweek and Spurs hosting of Chelsea this time around, can weaken players’ chances of securing the armband.

Nevertheless, many could decide to keep the faith with Harry Kane (12.5), who was second in last week’s poll.

Granted, the 35.7%-owned striker failed to find the net in Spurs’ 2-0 away victory over Newcastle United yesterday, but he next takes on a Chelsea side he has scored four times against in eight encounters.

The Blues shipped three goals in their defeat to Burnley, which further strengthens Kane’s captaincy credentials, as does his six shots against the Magpies on Sunday – more than any forward in Gameweek 1.

With a goal at St James’ Park, Kane’s teammate Dele Alli (9.5) may also attract attention, as could Christian Eriksen (9.5), who notched two assists and maximum bonus points in Gameweek 1. The Dane’s 31,000 new owners since Friday will certainly be hoping he can reward their faith.

Chelsea’s capitulation against the Clarets will likely mute interest in their assets, however, the 7.2%-owned Alvaro Morata (10.0) and Willian (7.0), who has an 18.% ownership, may have done enough to secure a decent poll standing. The Spaniard registered a goal and assist off the bench, while Willian also notched assist points.

Among the differential options this week is Christian Benteke (8.0), who scored a brace last time he visited Anfield, in April. However, his side’s 3-0 loss to Huddersfield at the weekend may be too fresh in the mind for those voting this week.

Sticking with the Terriers, their 6.0-priced striker Steve Mounie looks another strong alternative for the armband. He scored twice against Crystal Palace and hosts a Newcastle side racked by injuries and suspension following that bruising home defeat to Spurs. Still in just 2.0% of sides, the former Montpelier marksman has attracted 49,000+ new owners since the weekend.

The poll is now live in the middle column on your homepage on desktop, or via the slide-in menu on mobile and tablet under Recent Comments.

Remember, we’re looking for your vote for the player you think will be most effective, regardless of whether you own them or not.

We will be back to check in on progress in the poll later, ahead of the Gameweek 1 deadline when we deliver our “Captain Sensible” article offering an analysis of the results and the statistics behind the leading contenders.

Had a good gw, opted for Eriksen over Kane. Extremely knee jerky but am seriously considering getting in there on Kane against Chelsea and before they play Burnley.
As I already have KDB might transfer Jesus. Stupidity?

If United keep playing 4-2-3-1, I think he's a great pick. But you'll have to think Herrera will come back into the side, and when they switch to 4-3-3 he suddenly seems like a risky one.

transfer in and transfers out, with ownership percentage also thrown in.

It's a bit more complex than that. Possible that thresholds are set differently for players depending on initial ownership etc. They change their systems/algorithms every year so that it's tricky to predict price changes accurately.

West Ham were very poor and United were excellent. Pretty hard to judge Chicarito based on this game. He's got Southampton and Newcastle next so might be easier to judge him based on next two opponents.

    Fantasy Football Scout

Fantasy Football Scout daily (anti-knee jerk) hot topic

    Goals imminent

The goals imminent table works best over a four match period but nevertheless we can still garner a good indication of players that may require patience from Gameweek 1’s data.

For members here is a list of those players that failed to find the net, but not for want of trying.

    http://members.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/my-stats-tables/view/6070/

Here’s a couple of names that stand out.

    Harry Kane

Failed to find the net, but with Burnley in GWK 3 surely the two time golden boot winner deserves more time. Incredibly 61,000 managers have jettisoned him. His five shots inside the box puts him at the top of the early goals imminent table.

    Manolo Gabbiadini

The good news is that he fired off four shots in the box. The bad news is that none were on target. This will be key to his owners – if he carries on like this surely he will find the net? Or perhaps his accuracy has departed him this season. For me I’m giving him another one or two games. One game is not enough time to jettison him and he could punish the 17,000 FPL managers that have already ditched him.

Which attacking player are you looking to keep despite them failing to score in Gameweek 1?

Who deserves more time? Or who have you seen enough off and want to wave goodbye to?

Which other players do you think were unlucky not to score in GWK 1?

I have both of the above, along with Zaha and Atsu.

All worth a shot for one more week at least, and even if Zaha isn't fit I'd sooner play Dann with his set piece goal threat v Liverpool, than use my FT.

Hey Wings Fan, interesting comment! I also have Kane, Gabbi, KdB, Zaha AND Atsu. 100% agree with you, I'm going to retain all and save my Free Transfer (I have Dann as my first sub too).
I'm assuming your team is very similar to mine?! (61 points this week

        DDG
Dawson Yoshida Moreno (he looked good preseason, I know I shouldn't have...)
        KdB Mane Zaha Atsu
        Gabbi Kane Lukaku (c)
        Bench: Elliot Dann Carroll Rangel

I think this week's captain choice is tough this week. I'll probably play safe with Romelu but Mane, KdB and Kane could all be worthy picks!

Agree with this one. I'm far more interested in him than Mounié for example.

Some of the veterans on here will have been waiting for J-Rod for a long time, ever since 13/14 when he had 15 goals and 3 assists in 33 games. The guy had terrible luck with injuries since then but at a new team with a manager that rates him he surely has great potential. The only shame is that he is categorised as a forward.

Not convinced by Gabbiadini at all, and think I may get rid of him early, just seems incredibly inaccurate and it also seems Southampton are struggling to score at home again, value lies with the defenders.

Jesus looked incredibly unlucky from the highlights on MOTD, I'm certainly sticking with him. One player I'd be interested to hear opinions on would be Josh King. How did he look v WBA? He has an attractive fixture up next, but I have 1.0m itb and Firmino making faces at me, ahead of a home fixture against shambolic palace. What are the thoughts on this? 🙂

I agree about Kane, although he isn't in my team. GW3 worries me, always did. But I'll cross my fingers and hope that if Kane does well that week it is Eriksen supplying the bullets.

It may be wishful thinking but isn't Eriksen a likely candidate for a goal too? He had a lot of decent attempts last weekend. Jesus also looked likely to score sooner rather than later from what I saw.

Agreed. Eriksen looked fantastic in terms of his delivery and passing accuracy yesterday. Posed a goal threat too I think with 6 attempts. He could well be a captaincy candidate himself in GW3!

Eriksen did indeed look like a player in form, he played even better than Alli and Kane if you ask me.

His assist for Alli's opener was stunning. Had to get it over the defence, but with enough dip to not run though to the keeper, and with swerve on it to bend onto Alli's run. You have to be in great form to play that sort of pass.

Another player in good form who has maybe gone under the radar a bit is David Silva. Played more key passes than Eriksen, made more passes and completed more of them too. He is also a better dribbler and won more free kicks. He doesn't have the goal threat of Eriksen though, and is a rotation risk. Silky player to watch, mind.

Yeah, 'magician' is probably a deserved term for him. Lovely player. But has never really been a solid FPL pick and is rotation-threatened for sure, as all City players are.

A very apt description. Yeah he is, possibly only as much as KdB is though, for 2.0m cheaper and playing just as far, if not further, forward.

Is Kane not being in your team along the same thinking?

Yes, more or less. Although I do see Wembley as an issue initially.

At the start of the season I considered Lukaku to be a necessity and Kane a luxury. GW3 was the only early game that worried me because Kane will be widely captained that week.

Anyway, my decision was to wait till GW5 for Kane, at which time I'd consider taking Lukaku out for him. I think it damages the balance of the squad to have both so I'll alternate them using FTs according to when I'll want them as captains.

Despite Chelsea's frailties at the back vs Burnley, obviously not helped by Cahill's red card, I'm definitely holding on to Alonso:

      - More touches in the box than any other player (ahead of Lukaku and Salah who are the next two - glad I have all three!);
      - =4th in the list of goal attempts (behind Kane, Eriksen and Ox =1st, but ahead of the likes of Jesus, KdB, Laca).

As you say, Kane doing well in the stats table too so holding on to him.

I'm keeping all my blankers (KDB, Jesus, Zaha) for another week. No way I am shipping the City boys before Bournemouth so they will stay even longer, they are captaincy material in that match up.

I have Jesus as my only City player but with 1.0m ITB in reserve and Lukaku looking like a nailed on Golden Boot option I'm wavering.

I hoped Wet Sham would prove more stubborn and with Baily and Pogba I hoped I'd get away with it and reassess this week. I guess if Jesus had notched I'd be more happy to hold. Three Utd vs zero City hmm tough call...

      Jesus will come good
Tadic and Bertrand, damn close that chance spilled after three minutes played, but feels certain that those to will come good
      Zaha should have scored

      so keeping faith, i think

    Kane Jesus Firmino

I feel like going without Lukaku for one more week is too risky, and his price will rise soon...

    Should I do :

    A) Zaha Jesus --> Mooy Lukaku (-4)
    B) Save FT and pray

Scout Pick Community Champion Lottery – Gameweek 2

For the second time this season we are on the look out for a champion to represent the community to take on the Scout Picks and win the chance of a prize.

If you want to take part please email your FFS name and FPL ID number to community@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk .

The champion will then be selected at random shortly after the deadline of 9am Wednesday and then be asked to submit their XI by Friday 1pm by emailing me at jonty@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk

We only need 11 picks and please be mindful of the 83m budget. There’s no captain in the picks either and please stick to a designated FPL formation, including no more than three players from one team. No captain or chips will be applied.

At the end of the season the champion who beats the picks by the highest margin will win a £100 Amazon voucher.

The champion will be revealed in a midweek Scout Squad article, which will outline our initial thinking around the picks. Our and the champions picks will be revealed as usual in the Scout Picks article.

Should the community “Champion” fail to provide an initial or final Scout Pick selection, then an “Assistant Manager” chosen by us, will gain control of the selection to represent the community for the Gameweek in question.

So far (I know it's only 1 GW) it could be the season of buy and hold your premium players. Just too many to fit them all in
    Salah & Mane & Firmino
    KDB & Jesus & Aguero
    Lukaku, Pogba, Mkhi
    Kane, Alli & Eriksen
    Alonso
    Kola

So take your pick of 4 or 5 of them, don't chase last weeks points and use transfers on the cheaper assets that have form and fixtures to rotate around your premium core. Only switch your premium players when form AND fixtures take a turn.

KDB blank for me and Salah having another good result will see me making that switch. Can buy back KDB cheaper later and catch Salah's rises.
