Captains

Captain Poll – Gameweek 6

We start our look ahead to Gameweek 6 with the launch of our Captain Poll and a run down of the key contenders for the armband.

Harry Kane (12.5) ran away with our previous poll, with an emphatic 49% of the votes ahead of Spurs’ Wembley match against Swansea City. But the 0-0 draw that followed could mute interest when he drops by the London Stadium to face West Ham.

While he did score a brace in his side’s last road trip, away to Everton in Gameweek 4, that has been his only attacking return of the season.

West Ham’s recent resilience could also turn voters off Kane – the Hammers go into Saturday’s lunchtime fixture looking for their third consecutive clean sheet, after shipping 10 goals across the previous three.

Those still backing the underperforming striker, who has lost 71,000+ managers since Friday’s deadline, can still cling to some reassuring statistics for comfort. His tally of 32 goal attempts, 23 of which have arrived from inside the box, betters any other Premier League player.

With a hat-trick, assist and maximum bonus returns in Manchester City’s 6-0 away rout of Watford, Sergio Aguero (11.5) is expected to power his way to the summit.

A table-topping eight goal attempts against the Hornets in Gameweek 5 will give his backers further confidence, as will a home tie this weekend against a Crystal Palace side that has conceded eight times this campaign.

More than 324,000 FPL managers have recruited the Argentinian since Saturday, and it is also worth noting that on home turf only Liverpool have had more shots on goal than City.

Yet his striker partner Gabriel Jesus (10.5) also offers a very viable alternative. The pair have both scored four times in the last three Gameweeks, with the Brazilian serving up 12 points in his previous home outing.

Aguero has managed 11 points over his two appearances at the Etihad this term but failed to deliver double-digits last season, scoring just five of his 20 goals on home turf.

The form of Pep Guardiola’s side has persuaded 56,000 FPL managers to ditch Manchester United’s Romelu Lukaku (11.7) this week as they freshen up their frontlines. But given his goal, assist and three FPL bonus points in the 4-0 victory over Everton on Sunday, as well as attacking returns in all but one of his first five fixtures, the Belgian is likely to be a strong rival to Aguero and Kane when the Red Devils visit Southampton.

Although the Saints have yet to concede at St Mary’s in the league, they have allowed ten shots in the box – the fourth worst home tally.

Christian Eriksen’s (9.7) three assists and a goal, as well as Dele Alli’s (9.5) two successful strikes should ensure they attract interest for those backing a Spurs victory but have lost confidence in Kane. The midfield duo sit in 27.5% and 33.4% of FPL teams respectively.

A first successful strike of the season from Henrikh Mkhitaryan (8.5), against Everton, adds to a CV for 2017/18 that already includes five assists and ensures that he remains in our thoughts.

Among other differential options is Wayne Rooney (7.5), whose Everton side begin a far kinder run of fixtures with the visit of a Bournemouth this weekend. The Cherries have conceded the second highest amount of shots in the box, shipped nine goals and are still without their first clean sheet. For those that believe fixtures can improve form, the 16%-owned former England captain, who has two goals so far, may appeal.

Liverpool attackers could also push for a place near the top, despite only managing a 1-1 draw against Burnley on Saturday.

The Reds’ 35 goal attempts in that match, seven more than Manchester City fired off against Watford, suggests that stronger returns will come their way when they visit a Leicester City side that conceded twice against Chelsea at the King Power Stadium in Gameweek 4.

Mohamed Salah (9.2), with three goals and two assists, is likely to be their main source of interest, particularly as his 32.9% ownership is the highest among Jurgen Klopp’s troops.

Arsenal’s Alexandre Lacazette has scored in both of his home matches as West Brom make their way to the Emirates on Monday. And Alexis Sanchez could also come into contention for a start should Danny Welbeck fail to recover from the groin problem that forced him off at Chelsea on Sunday.

The poll is now live in the middle column on your homepage on desktop, or via the slide-in menu on mobile and tablet under Recent Comments.

Remember, we are looking for your vote for the player you think will be most effective, regardless of whether you own them or not.

We will be back to check in on progress in the poll later ahead of the Gameweek 6 deadline when we deliver our “Captain Sensible” article offering an analysis of the results and the statistics behind the leading contenders.

Rough: owning Kane, captaining Kane. Watching Kane hit the post. Again, and again, and again.

Scored less points than a guy in my ML who captained Pogba with Hemed as his VC....

Smooth? I've somehow not hit the WC button yet.

        Rough:
        - Not owning Lukaku or Aguero and seeing 600,000 odd Lukaku and Aguero owners and captainers surge past me.
        - Bringing in Ben Davies only for him to be rested, while the 3 players I had replaced because they didn't start in GW4 did all start in GW5.
        - Benching Fabianski and captaining Kane.
        - And only scoring 48 on my wildcard - I would have scored more if I had made no changes at all.

        Smooth:
My late switch from Firmino to Vardy, who is however now an injury doubt.

The main reasons I played my wildcard for GW5 were my 2 injured players (Kompany and Pogba) and 3 non-starters (Yoshida, Willian and Loftus-Cheek).
I did also think that after 4 game-weeks and the end of the transfer window I probably had enough information to improve my squad, but If I had known that the latter 3 were all going to play in GW5 then I would have stuck to my original plan and waited till the second international break.

Rough - a backline that included Van aanholt, Stephens and Davies, who played a combined total of 0 minutes.

Smooth - Captaining Mo Salah, and scraping through the LMS by 1 point, a dreadful week

      How's this for a rough?

I wildcarded ahead of this GW. Players I sold:

      Foster (clean sheet)
      Bertrand (clean sheet)
Valencia (goal, clean sheet, 3 bonus points)
      Brady (assist, 1 bonus point)
Aguero (3 goals, assist, 3 bonus points)

Pre-WC team wasn't in a complete shambles, but I had Mane to get rid of and felt I needed to bring in Kane and Davies for their good run. On top of that, I had TAA, Fosu-Mensah and a non-playing 5th defender, who I thought could all do with being replaced.

I stand by the changes I made, but will admit I was a week early in pulling the trigger 😆

Rough: Did Valencia > Davies. Captained Kane.

Smooth: The funds saved allowed me to do Willian > Salah, and Davies' absence also got me 6 very cheeky Naughton points off the bench. So I didn't miss out tooooooo badly.

Still ended up with 52 though, so still a pretty terrible week where I surrendered the lead in almost all of my MLs.

Was rough before a ball was kicked with Mane to Pogba. Smoother getting D Silva in for Pogba on the -4.

57 points, down to 2.4M. A fifth top 10k finish on the spin is now going to take some serious turning around.

Got rid of Pogba, Chicharito and Willian on Tuesday night for Silva, Choupo-Moting and Firmino for -8 for a net +2 and +.4 in TV. Time will tell if the transfer yield points but in a week where Kane (c) and Bavies (auto sub for 1 pt Dunk) it's a small smooth given my last 2 GW moves cost me net 10 points each atleast. The other smooths have to be sticking with Bellerin and getting the correct keeper out there.

Inspite of a decent week where I scored a net 54 lack of United Defence and Newcastle enablers has put me back 400k ranks and behind in most MLs.

It's not in direct connection with this particular gameweek, but with Salah's 10 and Ritchie's 11 points this week...

GW 3 transfers: KDB, Pogba, Antonio - in, Eriksen, Salah, Ritchie - out (-4), so until now:

      1. Antionio to Ritchie: 19 points less
      2. Pogba to Salah (with Firmino's 2 points as indirect replacement): 12 points less
      3. KDB to Erisken: 4 points less

      GW5 transfers:
Gabbi to Firmino, Stephens to Davies, and Moting to Pogba: -1 point.

      Rough week for me:
      - Bertrand, Alli & Chicarito out (total: 11) for -8.
(Captain) Kane, Bavies & Gross in (total: 9 plus 1 auto-sub defender). Yeesh. Still keeping faith that it's a worthwhile trade over the next 4.
      - Keeping Stephens has finally come back to bite me.
      - Ramsey was so, so close. He owes me something.

      Smooth:
      - Alonso, Foster, Gross, Brady, Mhki and Lukaku. Still got a distinctly below average score and bombin out my mini leagues.

Smooth: 36pts from my 3 Man United players Valencia, Mkhi and Lukaku. (For me FF is all about enjoying the little wins like getting 7 rather than standard 6 bonus points as Valencia and Lukaku joint top).

Also my main differentials of Ritchie and Brady both delivering points made big improvements in my mini-leagues.

Rough: getting the logic right of transferring in Mee and playing him against Liverpool (Mee excellent header on set pieces and Liverpool poor at defending them) only to watch him get two big chances and score neither. (But at least my fantasy logic was right).

Mostly ok but a rough captain!

Rough; Kane(c), did Bertrand>Davies so missed a cleanie with Suttner subbing in, brought Alli in for Pogba who didn't do a lot.

Smooth; Mkhi, Foster, Bailly, Kolasanic, Gross, Jesus all returned.

      53 points, dropped from 6k to 58k 🙁

2 free transfers and a hit for -3 pts, hoping these changes might be better down the track

      Out

      Jones (2)

      In
      Davies (didn't play)

Smooth: transferred out Chicarito for Vardy. Captained Kaku and resisted temptation to being in Kane. 70 pts.

Rough: benched Forster for Elliott. Previous week the reverse move also costed me. Ah the charms of goalkeeper rotation.

Rough. None of my starting 11 defenders played:

      Bavies (missed clean sheet)
      Stephens (missed clean sheet)
Lejuene (my own fault since Kane crocked him)
      Captained Kane.

Smooth: Naughton at the back of my bench coming on for a clean sheet

Smooth - Took out Pogba and Sterling (rotation risk) for Ritchie and Gross who scored me 18 points so definitely a good move despite the Sterling penalty. Clean sheets for Jones and Alonso. Lukaku haul but no armband.

Rough - No City players, no Salah, no Mkhitaryan meant a damaging week when combined with having Davies, Eriksen and Kane (c) as my key trio. Hernandez blanked again and has been shipped for Jesus.

58 pojnts (-4) and a 1.9m overall rank is probably one of my worst starts in several years yet I'm happy with my team - it's the captain picks (Harry I'm looking at you) that are killing me.

      Where to start..

Decided last minute it was crazy to sell Lukaku, so went Ramsey -> C.Moting to fund Gabbiadini -> Firmino for free.

I really wanted Bavies in for Stephens since I thought Stephens would be benched + I was sure Davies would get attacking points + CS, but was 0.5 I think short. To fund it I convinced myself double MUN at the back wasn't worth it with Jones already in my team and Elliot at 4.0 nailed, so for a double hit I did DDG + Stephens -> Fabianski + Bavies.

Gabbiadini and Stephens didn't start, but both Firm and Moting blanked. And I benched Fabianski 11 points for Elliot and captained Kane 😆 Ritchie, Lukaku, Salah + a couple CS got me 61 (-8), which tbh isn't that bad considering my stupid moves.

Rough: Didn't ever own Ben Davies because I always believed the "Rose will be back soon" news. The first week I choose to ignore that news and bring Davies in, he gets benched. So typical really. God knows how many points I've missed and I still don't have a single point from him. Might as well captain him now to make up for lost points.

Smooth: 59 points as a Kane captainer. Was on 29 before the United match. 30 points from 1 match saved my gameweek a little.

Rough: Wilcarded and replaced Lukaku with Kane and captained Kane. Davies auto sub to Winner for 0. Wilcarded because got Pogba in before his injury for -4. That team would still have outscored my wilcard team by over 20 points. Played Elliott instead of Fabianski.
Smooth: Jesus, Mendy and Mkhitaryan saved my framework. Total of 47

Rough: captained Kane, took a hit to replace Gabby/Tadic with Doucare/Firmino (who went on to score 2 less points plus the -4 transfer), lost ground in the ML to rivals with Aguero.

Smooth: 64 points (thank you Valencia, Ritchie, and Lukaku), overall ranking continued to creep up, and went to 5-0-0 at the top of my draft league.

Rough: Switched captaincy from Lukaku to Alli on Friday because I was so petrified about Spurs destroying Swansea and not having Kane, that I needed to have some kind of contingency to be involved somehow.

      Smooth: Naughton Davies autosub club

Rough: made 3 transfers for -4, they cost me 33 points in total.

      Mkhitaryan (9) to Richarlison (2)
      Redmond (3) to Choupo-Moting (2)
      Jesus (6) to Kane (2)
Captained Kane (2) instead of Lukaku (12), who would've been my captain if I hadn't transferred in Kane.
Rejected my first instinct, which was Benteke (2) to Vardy (9).
And of course, -4 for the hit.

Rough - Quadruple Spurs getting a combined 7pts from a plumb fixture, switching Lukaku to Kane cost 20pts, none of my 14 transfers this season have got instant returns, 4th red arrow in a row

Smooth - five clean sheets out of seven, midfield finally delivered with Salah, Mkhi and that fortunate Brady assist

      Rough:
      jesus > kane (C)
      yoshida > Davies
      fernandez> mbemba
Also bought richarlison, joselu who blanked
      Kept alli

      Smooth:
Luiz> otamendi (auto subbed in for davies)
      Pogba> mhiki
      Kept lukaku/salah/ foster

      Scored 67 but pre-WC team got 81.

Rough: sold Lukaku for Kane and captained him. Brought in Bavies on a -4 for good measure. That's a 24 swing compared to doing nothing.

Rough; sold Lukaku for Kane and captained Kane. Last ten minutes of that United game was horrendous, worst part beeing that it was more Evertons at fault rather than United playing well that gave Lukaku and Mkhi their points... Still i believe i did a sensible choice based on fixtures and by my eyes, but i did lost out some points on it but the rest of my players did reasonably well so even if i fell down 500k i am pretty happy with my team as it is.
Smooth; It was rough when i saw Davies on the bench, and i knew i had Atsu on the bench sitting with his 9pointer. So a blessing that he didn´t came on as a substitute. Bertrand and Jones CS was nice, Salah points good. 54points with a blunder of a captains choice was fairly good. Learnt a lesson about not "covering" your ML leader by a lesser player (I played Francis vs his Daniels which almost made me loos out on Atsu´s points). Also made som hit´s and one now but fairly happy with it as i think i made choices of reason, got rid av Tadic eventually.

      This is proper teamwork.

      2. Kane since GW 1, sell him in GW 4 (he scores 2 .... I miss out on points). I transfer him in for a hit and capt him.... he's trolling my team

Finding it really hard to decide whether to bring Aguero in. Mixture of last season's prejudices about rotation and having to drop one of Kane/Lukaku currently stopping me. Ultimately, it should be about who you think's going to score the most points and it's hard to look past Aguero on that front.

Anyone else closer to a decision?

No closer to a decision, but in the same boat

Lukaku > Kun seems the obvious option for this week (though probably to be swapped back the week after??), not least because of the penalty shenanigans with Utd.

Still, it runs the risk of being smacked on the backside by Pep, plus it uses up two FT's ...... leaves me exposed to taking a hit if there's trouble at t'mill elsewhere in the squad

So, sorry: I'm of no help whatsoever

Yep, I'm not keen on swapping Lukaku and Kun in and out. Looks good on paper, but never works well in practice. And I wouldn't stress overly about a price rise. It's the kind of decision you need to stew on.

Wait and see the team sheet against Brom mid-week. If he's rested he starts against Palace. If he starts I reckon he'll be benched this weekend. Who cares about a catching a price rise if there's a chance he'll be benched. Wait.

    Elliot
    Kolasinac | Davies | Lowton
    Salah | Gross | Mkhi | Carroll
    Aguero | Kane | Jesus
    (Foster, Simpson, RLC, Mbemba)

Any thoughts/suggestions? I'm on a wildcard and currently looking at double city frontline, 4 superb home fixtures are tempting!

Front 3 if you were WCing now? Can't look past Kun Kaku Firmino for me. One of Kun and Kaku will always be a at home and Firmino still looks good value, not a great option when out wide though

A red arrow as an Aguero, Mhki, Salah and Yoshida owner is a real kick in the nuts

    Foster Elliot

    Alli Salah Hazard Ritchie Chopo-Moting
    Aguero Lukaku Hemed

Is this a valid WC team? Ritchie, Hemed and Chopo will rotate for 2 spots

What would you say about this?

    Elliot/Foster
    Bavies/Jones/Cedric/Lowe/Mbem
    Salah/Miki/Ritchie/Chalobah/TC
    Kane/Kaku/Kun(c)

    Too unbalanced?

Yea unfortunately. But it's so hard to balance a team with 3 expensive forwards. Over the next few weeks though that front line gives you amazing captaincy options.

I want to make Eriksen Firmino to Kun Salah. Ritchie stays as I rate him over Atsu and Gross fixtures go bad
