Scout Notes – Gameweek 36 – Sunday

Sergio Aguero runs riot at the Etihad and condemns QPR to Championship football next season. David Silva and Aleksandar Kolarov also serve up double-figure hauls as Manuel Pellegrini’s side turn in their best display of the campaign. Elsewhere, Chelsea and Liverpool play out a 1-1 draw at the Bridge, with captains John Terry and Steven Gerrard grabbing a goal apiece.

Aguero hat-trick delivers final blow to R’s

Manchester City put six unanswered goals past Queens Park Rangers at the Etihad, consigning the London club to relegation after a single campaign in the top-flight. Sergio Aguero stole the headlines by virtue of a hat-trick and two assists, racking up a 23-point haul to move into second spot in the overall Fantasy Premier League (FPL) standings behind Eden Hazard. Meanwhile, a converted free-kick from Aleksandar Kolarov and tap-ins from James Milner and David Silva capped off the hosts’ scoring.

Aguero now has eight goals in five and has netted in five consecutive matches as a result of City’s move to a lone striker system. The Argentine has executed five more shots inside the box (16) than any other forward in the last four Gameweeks, with four more shots on target (10) than next best Harry Kane (ten). A trip to Swansea (one shut-out in five) and a visit from Southampton (no clean sheet in six road matches) look set to continue Aguero’s remarkable scoring spree.

Silva’s 20% ownership were richly rewarded for retaining his services in spite of Chelsea and Liverpool’s recent double Gameweek, with the Spanish playmaker notching one goal, two assists and a couple of bonus points en route to the joint-highest points tally (16) of any midfielder so far this round.

Those managers who plumped for Kolarov off the back of our differential recommendation in Gameweek 34 enjoyed further attacking returns from the marauding Serb. City’s expansive full-back boasts two goals, one assist and three clean sheets in five, boosting his average score across the last four to a whopping 9.5 points per appearance, with his form looking likely to keep Gael Clichy on the bench.

Terry header secures draw amid rotation

Blues boss Jose Mourinho named five changes for their 1-1 draw with Liverpool at Stamford Bridge, with Kurt Zouma, Filipe Luis, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Mikel and Loic Remy coming in for Gary Cahill, Cesar Azpilicueta, Nemanja Matic, Juan Cuadrado and Didier Drogba. In his post-match interviews, Mourinho revealed plans to retain Loftus-Cheek in the side for their West Brom trip while also handing starts to academy players Nathan Ake and Izzy Brown. Although the Portuguese boss insisted his first team will return for their home clash against Sunderland on the final day, his admission that Cesc Fabregas, Eden Hazard and Willian have “played too much” places serious doubts over their minutes for Gameweek 37.

John Terry scored his second goal in three starts, netting the opener from a Cesc Fabregas corner. The Chelsea captain now sits second in the FPL defender rankings with a total score of 176, just two points shy of Branislav Ivanovic’s tally. While the Baggies encounter is somewhat of an unknown quantity in light of the planned squad rotation, the Black Cats tie could well harvest another clean sheet for the Blues rearguard, considering the Wearsiders possess the second-worst offence (30 goals scored) in the league.

Gerrard delivers parting message to Blues

The Reds’ draw at Chelsea effectively ended their slim hopes of mounting a late charge for the Champions League berths. Brendan Rodgers’ men were buoyed by a headed equaliser from the talismanic Steven Gerrard just before the break but failed to test Thibaut Courtois with any regularity, only fashioning four shots on target throughout the encounter.

Gerrard has now netted in each of the last two Gameweeks and looks a certain starter for the final couple of matches as he brings the curtain down on his Liverpool career. With upcoming opponents Palace and Stoke far from convincing at the back, the Reds skipper could prove a canny differential for those who are already fully stocked upon Arsenal’s assets and have no other pressing transfers.

Raheem Sterling lays claim to solitary goal in 10 Gameweeks after drawing a blank for four successive matches. The Jamaican-born winger mustered just six shots in his previous four starts, as compared to Philippe Coutinho’s 22 attempts on goal. As such, one would expect a further surge of transfers out for Sterling in the wake of 150,000 managers cashing in last week.

With top four now out of sight for Liverpool, investors in their squad will be mindful of a downturn in form of the like that’s befallen Tottenham Hotspur and Southampton. Nonetheless, managers that snapped up Reds defenders for their double Gameweek 34 may fancy their chances of a clean sheet when they welcome Palace to Anfield next weekend, given that the Eagles have scored one goal in their last four outings.

    Any early ideas?

    Panti (Myhill)
    Kolarov Terry PVA (Schlupp, Baird)
    Silva Ozil Mata Hazard
    Aguero Giroud Vardy

I'm thinking either Hazard---->Sanchez(Bring him back in for GW 38 for Sanchez)
or Terry---->4.1m and play Schlupp, PVA and Kolarov for the rest of the season.

    Cheers

Yep, no Sanchez could hurt and things look unsure on the Hazard front.

Hazard to Sanchez is all I'm seeing.

Don't like the Giroud pick but he might turn things around. I think ARS will come down to Sanchez and a lottery between: Cazorla (on penalties), Rambo (on good form but injury prone) and Ozil (will he wake up?!)

    2 FTs this week, thankfully.

Hazard and Vardy to Ozil and Defoe?

Unfortunately I still own Sterling too - do I get rid of him also?

Vardy on decent form. Lots to weigh up though as if Leicester safe he will highly likely be given last week off due to foot. So potentially a great move ahead of the curve.

Keep Vardy who has QPR as the final huraah.

Anything outside Sanchez for ARS mids is a lottery. Why not Ozil!

Yes, ditch Sterling. He's out for me this week. Disgusting pick.

Just had a look at the last few of occasions when Arsenal had matches in quick succession.

Players who started both Everton (Mar 1) AND QPR FA Cup (4th)
    Ospina,
    Bellerin, Gabriel, Gibbs
    Cocquilan, Cazorla, Sanchez
    Giroud,

Started all 3 games West Ham (March 14th)/Monaco (17th)/Newcastle (21)
    Ospina
    Kosc, Monreal
    Sanchez, Cocq
    Giroud

Started both Palace (feb 21st) AND Monaco (25th)
    Ospina
    Kosc,Merts
    Cazorla, Ozil, Sanchez, Cocq
    Giroud

Have no idea who were available or injured.
Thus, read into that what you will

My only concern with Giroud is at the last Utd Game in FA Cup March 9th he started Welbeck
With Giroud coming on 74th minute.
I think it could be a risk if Welbeck is fit.

Exactly, Ivanovic and Clyne 1 point-galore, Schlupp/PvA/Panti point-frenzy on the bench.. maybe you want to take a punt because you think Puncheon or Adam will do well for 2-3 gameweeks but that gives you 4-5m ITB which doesn't seem right

This is the crux of it. Thinking that you have to spend what is available. If I have 9m to spend on a striker I often don't consider someone worth 6.5m as there is something which tells me that the more I spend the better player I get. Which is clearly not always the case.

Completely. The rise of the cheap fifth mid, the uber defenders and the likes of Kane, Austin and Vardy upfront, have made tv irrelevant.

I think Giroud and Benteke are pretty useful. A good TV has enabled me to have Silva, Coutinho, Haz, Sanchez, Gru, Aguero. Along with the likes of Terry, Berty and Migs.

I don't think so, I'm sure many of us are still relying on cheap goalies and defenders to try to fit the forwards and mids we want. Unless we have £200m there are always decisions to be made. People who focused on TV early on will have been able to fit all the big hitters like Aguero, Sanchez, Hazard, Ivanovic as well as the Leicester players. Teams with lower TV might have the same Leicester players but Ozil instead of Sanchez etc. so they do have to make compromises.

Not an unreasonable assessment. Lots of over achieving budget players - Kane, Austin, Bellerin, WBA/Leicester defenders etc. Leaves loads of room for the big hitters.

Definitely - got my TV up to over £110m by week 29, played WC in week 34 and still had £4.5 ITB, currently have £3.4 ITB and nowhere to spend it. Ranked in top 1000, so not as if I was missing out on buying the right players.

In terms of this season yes. But next season could be a completely differently story, especially if they tinker with the price algo again.

Also don't remember that many band wagons this year. Kane only went up 0.2 and 0.3 once each on his way to a peak of 6.5 from his 5.0 start price. It was easy for everyone to get him in and a far cry from the band wagons seen in previous seasons.

This is very true. In previous season a player who went from 0% to 50% ownership would have gone up a lot more than 1.5m

I dont think its made it irrelevant at all, the system needing changing as it hadn't been tweaked since more players started playing the game and using sites like this and price monitoring sites etc- which meant the transfers system had deviated from what was probably originally intended, and placed an over reliance on the accumulation of team value.

The other thing to consider is there is no way of knowing what each season will produce in terms of bargains, this year undoubtedly gave us an abundance of cheap strikers -next year is likely to be very different and may benefit those who chase TV.

As always though - the golden rule for me is to remain adaptable to the changing face of FPL. (and dont ever assume you have it figured out, because thats when it can bite you hard!)

A big TV allows you to get the quality players who will get you reliable points all season. Because of my high TV I've managed to steer clear of the inconsistent options and have Benteke as the cheapest of the front 7

Prices still matter. You can't buy the best 15 players in the game. You can't even buy the best 11 plus four cheap subs. But I understand what people are saying - they are less binding than in other years and have forced fewer tough decisions.

I think you have inadvertently hit the nail on the head.

"You can't buy the best 15 players in the game".

The best 15 (11 more relevant) players in the game change from week to week and 6 week period to 6 week period with form and fixtures. What you get with the higher priced players is the players that will probably finish the season with the highest points over the whole season but at almost every 6 week period during the season their points totals will be matched by a cheaper alternative.

Personally I think the fpl managers that try and build value are the ones that are too afraid to back their own judgement on the lower to medium priced players that will outscore the high end players. A high TV is like their comfort blanket.

I am in the middle of a terrible season (by my own mediocre standards) but I have still backed myself against Costa, ADM, Sanchez (after xmas when he was pushed out to the wing) among other bandwagons and poor value options (imo at the time) which helped me to a 35k rank around gw18. I can safely say that going against these players ( I did have Sanchez when he was playing as a striker) was not my downfall this season (Costa getting suspended/injured actually really hurt my rank as people were able to ditch him and get more balance in their teams) just as going against hazard and yaya last season didn't stop me finishing 3k or so OR.

It has maybe become less of an issue but it isn't an irrelevance. If player value was no object I'd be able to do Boyd > Sanchez. As it is I need to sacrifice Couthinho or Hazard.

Changes to FPL's price-change algorithm have slowed down price rises this season, but I think high TVs are over-rated anyway.

The top ten players in the world often do not have particularly high TVs. Many of the players with higher TVs may have obtained them by taking more hits, by making early transfers to beat price changes, and by jumping on too many bandwagons that are based on temporary form and hype. This tends to result in higher TVs at the expense of fewer points, and to template teams that get them so far but not to the very top.

Of course, the ideal would be to select all the players who are going to score the most points before they score them, and your TV should then increase rapidly as a side-effect - but that takes real skill (and/or luck).

Yep with Kane @ 5m when I bought him and Costa/Sturridge injurys my 110.4 TV team doesn't look that different to my nearest rival with 103.5

FPL doesn't guarantee one anything, so I guess we all should stop complaining. I'm enjoying the season with all the uncertainties rather than having a one where you know RVP or a Bale would blast you off if you can't afford either one of them

TV is and has always been overated since the days of Ronaldo, Gerrard and Lampard being must haves (along with players like Fabregas who also cost quite a lot). I don't think many of the top managers look at growing their TV that seriously, of course they will husband their resources but not at the sacrifice of points imo

RuthNZ was on earlier - never plays CB and is deployed as LB mostly but can be used in midfield.

He is primarily a LB. That's where he has always played for Holland U-19 and U-21 and that's where he played for Reading when on loan.

In the youth he has occasionally played CB as well but he's only 5' 10" or so and won't be playing that position at senior level.

He can also play CDM and has actually been used there more in the Chelsea first team. But that has been as much because Luis has needed games in cups and CL as anything else. LB is his long-term position.

          "Definitely not a CB"

          Wrong.

He definitely played mostly CB all the way through youth level. He captained Holland to European u17 championship - from CB. Occasionally he played in defensive midfield. He may be a bit short for it now, but to say DEFINITELY not a CB is both ignorant and untrue.

Surely Defoe isn't likely to do well against Leicester and Arsenal, who are both in form? Silva has averaged 6 PPG over the season, whilst Defoe has managed 3.9 since January.

    Would Ivan+Howard+Benteke > PVA+Pants+Aguero for -8 be worth the 2 hits?

I'm 14 points off my mini league leader and he doesn't have aguero.

    A- Kane > Wickham
    B- Kane > Defoe
    C- Boyd > Gomez
    D- Boyd + Alderweireld > Gomez + PvA (-4)

True, leaning towards B because not sure of Sunderland double defence

Hard to believe there's a PL player with 14 seasons as a senior pro and he's not even 30 😉

Are those of you that were planning on Silva -> Arsenal midfielder, thinking of keeping him and selling Hazard instead?

Based on yesterday's performance Hazard needs to go. Might bring him back for Silva in gw38
