The Community Round-Up

The waiting finally came to an end this week as the Fantasy Premier League opened its doors for the new season.

With the full player list revealed, our Hot Topic posters have been eager to pass on their advice on bargain hunting and selecting the premium players.

Over in our community article section, top tips for winning FPL’s new draft game were dished out, as was advice on winning formations for the coming season and analysis on the previously underperforming teams set for a far better 2017/18.

Elsewhere, our Members’ tables focused on the midfielders who are due a goal come August’s kick-off, while we conclude our round-up with a peek at the FPL community competitions up and running just days after the game’s launch.

The Community Articles

FPL’s draft game opens next week and veteran of the format Pav A Nice Day was on hand to offer his top tips for success. Essential reading.

Also new for 2017/18 could be a change of fortunes for a handful of underperforming sides from last season, according to Prokopta’slook at the plexiglas principle and how teams rarely offer the same returns over a number of campaigns. He lists four sides in particular that he believes will convert far more chances over the 2017/18 campaign.

Another new feature for the season ahead could be an end to the popular 3-4-3 and 3-5-2 formations. Firetog’s detailed calculations point to a four, or even five-man defence potentially providing more lucrative options.

Meanwhile, Niemi has dropped by to offer advice on the best players to get in and those to ditch for Gameweek 17 in Fantasy Eliteserien, the last set of fixtures before this Norwegian top-flight game takes a short summer break.

Don’t forget, if you’ve got some analysis, scout reports or features brewing, be sure to visit our community section to submit your article.

The Hottest Topics

The launch of FPL on Wednesday unsurprisingly dominated discussions. But before we were able to finally end a summer of waiting and log in, FPL price setters continued their drip-feeding of player valuations to whet our appetite.

A helpful Diesel001 collected all the early price revelations in one place to act as an archive of opinions on the players you felt offered value or were overpriced.

With the full player list to choose from, I noticed a wealth of options in midfield priced at 7.0.

This “Magnificent Seven” group has clearly caught your eye too, according to our discussion on midfield value. Willian is among those with that price tag who many are considering, especially as his Chelsea side have a strong easy opening fixture at home to Burnley and the threat of rotation has lessened due to Eden Hazard’s absence through injury. Ludo has been taking a look at how the Brazilian stacks up against his Spanish team mate Pedro, who costs 1m more.

Then on Saturday, Stilicho chimed in with his hot topic to survey your current midfield configuration. That saw Ronny Hotdog advocate the classic two heavy-hitter/two mid-price set-up, with Willian and Ramsey getting a lot of love throughout the thread.

Meanwhile, the 8.5 price tag for Manchester City winger Leroy Sane attracted the attention of Sleeptalk.

We also asked for your thoughts on bargains across all positions, with Jairzinho particularly keen to discuss Southampton’s Nathan Redmond, who is valued at 6.5.

Firetog’s discussion of the best formation for 2017/18 also spilled out into our Hot Topics, with us asking whether Romelu Lukaku’s (11.5) move to Manchester United, coupled with a high valuation for Spurs’ Harry Kane (12.5), means a strong third striker is a luxury few can afford.

There was further chat about forwards in our discussion on your FPL frontlines, as well as Enzo the Baker’sanalysis of the best attacking options among the top sides.

FPL Virgin wonders whether sacrifices in midfield can also be made to make room for last season’s wing-back and full-back stars who offer the chance of returns at both ends of the pitch.

Among this group of versatile players is James Milner, who has been reclassified from a midfielder to a defender after a season at left-back. The Liverpool penalty taker was among the most eye-catching players mentioned in N3il M3llor’s hot topic on players that have changed classification.

Milner’s successful spot-kick in Liverpool’s 4-0 rout of Tranmere Rovers was among the highlights of this week’s pre-season friendlies and showed that the former England international is still part of Jurgen Klopp’s plans. We asked what other issues you hope the summer schedule may help solve.

Once again the cry of ‘we can’t have them all’ was heard shortly after the community attempted to squeeze all of the players they desired into their 100m-budgeted FPL side. Net Gains is not impressed with some of the player valuations, in particular among the promoted sides, and wonders if the budget could be increased.

FPL also revealed a new Free Hit chip for the coming season. This replaces the much-maligned All Out Attack strategy and offers managers the chance to overhaul their team for one Gameweek. We asked for your ideas for getting the most out of this new addition to the game, with Lateriser12’s suggestion of using it via an expert navigation of the fixture list proving to be among the most intriguing ideas put forward.

Finally, our resident mathematicians have been assessing the optimum underlying statistics to consider when picking players. For Parm expected goals (xG) looks a key indicator of success, and there was further number crunching in Bolivian Seaman’s discussion on statistics that offer genuine value to Fantasy managers.

To view all our discussions please visit our Hot Topics page.

The Members’ Tables

Giggs Boson has been busy adding further analysis to Prokoptas’ article on teams that are likely to improve next season. He has been taking a look at those midfielders who really should have scored more in 2016/17, as well as those who had unsustainable and sustainable goal conversion rates.

Meanwhile, resident expert D1asable created this essential table which highlighted those players who had gathered 40+ bonus points in the Sky Sports game.

If you’re a member and are yet to get to grips with the custom statistics tables, you can view this movie for an explanation of how they work. Also, remember to tag them so that people can find the tables with ease.

The Community Tournaments

QPRUTD has created a special league for the community’s busiest posters during the summer wait for FPL to launch. Full details of the league, which closes for entrants on Monday, can be found here.

Red Lightning also dropped by to tell us that his Top 10K Any Season league (757-400) in FPL is open for those with that high rank at least once in their Fantasy career. He asks for you to list any other leagues for the community to join, which details a Top 100 ID league (97-643) and Torres Magic’s Last Man Standing (44937-13340).

Elsewhere, FPL Kangaroo is looking for people to beat him in his mini-league (487-19440).

In Fantasy Eliteserien Colemans Mustard remain top of the FFScout league, but an impressive Gameweek 16 score of 80 puts Sangomango in second place, just six points behind. On Giant’s Shoulders has taken the lead in this the FFScout H2H league.

If you are running a community tournament and would like the latest scores included in future Community Round-Ups, please email us a summary of the current leaders and a link to your league, spreadsheet or head to head competition, at jonty@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk.

Tbh the first comment isn't really offensive, he's staying a fact. The second is just him being unpleasant. The last could be construed as racist, sexist etc, although I think it's valid. I wouldn't really watch James Bond as a woman. Edgar would they call her? Jane Bond? How would they bring over his complex mental issues into a female psyche? Looking at it from that point of view, he's making some valid points, although he's certainly getting callous and rude

Super Dab (the most cringe Gravatar and name ever) I have ever right to offer my opinion whether you like it or not. I stated the reason I'm not happy with Dr Who is because they are changing the lore to fit an agenda
      If Dr Who was female
From the start I would have a problem with them making Dr Who Male as it would ruin the established canon.

Shocked people are asking this. Very expensive, very unsettled, heart not with Arsenal. Also Lacazette provides better cover.

As an Everton fan (judging from your name), are you actually happy about the Rooney signing?

He's been woeful for the last 4 years (coming from a neutral). I'd just be interested to hear an Everton fan's perspective.

Different Everton fan here. I wouldn't have dreamed of it but now it's happened I think both club and player can benefit.

Rooney has big game experience, which Everton lack. He can also help nurture some of the young talent coming through. I do feel he has a few good spells of form left in him. He won't play 60 games of course. The truth is he was treated woefully by England and Utd and was largely made scapegoat for two massively underachieving teams. I think Everton will get two good, if not great years out of him

Personally I wasn't begging for his return like some, but now that he is back I am happy with the signing. I feel like he still has something to offer and can improve our team in the short term. He is obviously not the player he used to be but I think by the end of the season he will have contributed a lot to the team.

IMO - to much of an overload up front. Weak "D" - look for more potential goal scorers attack minded D'ers. Kun demands to much $ and IMO is not essential. Just my opinion but would drop him (Defoe) - take the $ and improve the back. Cheers and All the Best !

Think the striker Chelsea(or unable to get one) may sign will have quite an impact on our initial drafts, Aubameyang at 11-11.5 ish, could be a decent pick to consider, his goalscoring record is terrific, how he'd fit in Conte's plan is a different situation. Morata/Belotti at 10 ish could be a lottery, and is best avoided at the start. An Aguero rumor is brewing and could be one of the picks of the season at 11.5, but very unlikely that's going to happen. In case Chelsea fails on all fronts, Batshuayi stepping up at 8.5, could be a decent punt to start out with against Burnley at Home. Although a bit difficult the initial fixtures look, Chelsea tends to start out strong more often than not.

      1. Andy_Social
        • 11 Years

Whoever Chelsea gets will arrive late in the day and Kun aside (won't happen) will be unfamiliar with the players and the league. So I'd stand back and give them time to settle.

It will be interesting if they start Batshuayi, but with the unknown factor and tricky fixtures, I'd still be wary.

I'll tell you when Chelsea didn't start well - 2 years ago. Reigning champions but grumpy manager. Remember how that went?

        Very few.

My advice if running a 4.0 defender is to get the one with the lowest % ownership just before the deadline.

This is bc most owning him will be owning him as a 4.0 who will hold value, rather than the higher ones which may see sales, given how ludicrous the market is early on at peak engagement. People will hit like crazy after GW1.

      My thoughts on forward options:

Arsenal: lacazette looks the real deal. Converted winger means that his career goal stats of 1 in 2 are not a fair reflection. Reasonably priced for the main striker in a top 4 side who is a threat for golden boot even in his first season.

Liverpool: I am a Liverpool fan. FirmiNO. Most forward players on the pitch will be the wingers. Firmino is a great player but not for fantasy.

Man City: Ageuro and Jesus are to expensive and may well be rotated given the midfield investment. Not s game week 1option for me.

Man U: Lukaku. Proven goalscorer. Great opening fixtures. High ownership. Game week 1 for sure

Spurs: kane is best fantasy asset in the game. Regardless of price. BUT a slow starter. Been burned before. Question Marks over Wembley.

Conclusion: Lukaku and lacazette in a 3 5 2 on day 1. Early wildcard to upgrade to kane once he gets going and has proven Wembley is not a factor.

Been a long time since I posted here, long time user of the site but very rarely leave a comment.

However, as Brighton are now in the PL (season ticket holder here) - thought this info may be of use to those not familiar with the Super Seagulls with a few tips

      1. Knockaert is by far our best player, everything we do goes through him usually. A sound fantasy investment in my eyes, esp. because he always demands the ball and will take a fair few of our free kicks/corners. Will be very motivated to do well too a) he's driven by the loss of his father last year and b) didn't really get a fair crack of the whip at Leicester when he helped get them promoted a few years ago.

      2. Dunk-Duffy are nailed to start off the season as centre backs. Hunemeier is a good player, but he'll be on the bench for sure if D&D are both fit and available. No 4m cheap defender to choose from I'm afraid!

      3. Only Stephens is a sure starter in centre midfield for every match. Everyone else battling it out to partner him. 4-4-1-1 looks to be our preferred formation ATM.

      4. Hemed could be a good outside bet for goals, especially at the start of the season. His goal scoring always seems to peak at the start and end of the season, weirdly. Also, if he's on the pitch, I expect him to be our #1 pen taker. He took them last season even when Murray was on the pitch. Good pen taker too, very reliable. If he can start regularly, or if Murray gets injured, he's a steal at 5.0m.

      5. Those of you with Dunk, please beware of his frequency to get booked all of the time. It's so frustrating and you can see it coming from a mile off. He's a YC magnet, to put it simply. Throws himself into some silly challenges quite a lot, so if you've considered a Brighton defender, I'd be tempted to go with Duffy instead. He's a bit more sensible with regard to tackles, but then again Dunk has better chance of scoring a goal from a set piece. Bruno could also be a good shout for 4.5m - he's the captain and will certainly play every week plus contribute with a few assists during the season, I'd imagine. LB is the uncertainty here, last season - Bong played every home match and Pocognoli (on loan from West Brom) played all away matches. Don't know what the plan is for LB for this season, I'd guess Suttner will be #1 choice but don't know for sure.

      6. Don't expect us to be too attaching, even at home. Hughton is a defensive manager and likes to 'have what we hold' rather than be too gung-ho. If you're looking for a bit more excitement/feeling of the unknown, see Huddersfield.

      7. Lastly. The final point I want to make is don't write us off against anybody. As a city, Brighton is right behind the team and their first season in the top flight for god knows how long! There'll be a real buzz in and about the place, esp against Man C on the 1st day. And that counts for something, for sure.

Anyway, hope that helps. Feel free to comment on this post for extra questions. Happy to answer.

      Cheers

      J

Good warning about Dunk. Saw him as a decent shout for a 4.5 defender, but then saw his disciplinary record.

De Gea and Ederson rotate nicely.

King or Defoe, or is it really a case of flipping a coin?

        Base it on fixtures

          Haha

Defoe. I think basically no-one thinks it's a close decision. However I'm swaying towards neither now, due to they GW3-4 fixtures.

Having said that, if you value King as highly as Defoe, then get both! It's no different from having Defoe + Bournemouth defender or Midfielder, besides the price, but King will score more goals/points for that price.

I'm guessing that's more me, since Marcus isn't a member. What are you trying to say with that link? I think it back's up having Defoe right? Not sure it says anything about his fixtures though haha

      MOURINHO PLOTS LUKAKU, RASHFORD ATTACK

Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho says he plans to trial a new-look strikeforce by pairing Romelu Lukaku with Marcus Rashford.

Okay, I'm interested, given Rashford's price. Let's monitor the next few friendlies.

"Today [Rashford] was in a different team than Lukaku. But in this pre-season we will also try both in the same team which I think can also work," Mourinho told reporters.

Think it could be very exciting! I.e. either incredible high scoring or dreadfully low scoring....e.g. when the mid range players are firing in the points

That midfield...looks like a strong 3-2-3...hope it works for you though.
