Scout Notes

Scout Notes – Gameweek 7 – Sunday

A Philippe Coutinho long-range special makes up for his Liverpool team-mates’ wastefulness as Roberto Firmino loses his starting spot.

Alexandre Lacazette blanks for Arsenal, while Wayne Rooney’s benching fails to cure Everton’s ills up front.

Here are the notes from Sunday’s matches as we are dragged kicking and screaming into another international break.

Reds trio broken up and blank

The Fantasy decline of Roberto Firmino continues apace.

The Liverpool striker was second only to Sergio Aguero for sales last week, with 266,000 giving him the elbow.

A further 63,000+ have done the same ahead of Gameweek 8 as Jurgen Klopp dropped the Brazilian to the bench for the trip to Newcastle.

His replacement, Daniel Sturridge, fluffed his chance to be given a role on a more permanent basis, and it was left to Philippe Coutinho to paper over the cracks of Liverpool’s continued profligacy in front of goal.

The midfielder’s superb long-range effort was his second consecutive goal in the league and third in all competitions, having also netted against Spartak Moscow in midweek.

Owned by 7.8%, Coutinho has now been involved in three of the Reds’ five league goals since returning to the starting XI in Gameweek 5 and is becoming increasingly influential in their output.

Liverpool lead the way with 75 attempts over that time frame, but have been held to two draws as they struggle to finish teams off.

Mohamed Salah – the top owned midfielder on 34.9% – has scored twice in that period but his owners will be a little concerned by yesterday’s display, with the Egyptian restricted to just a single effort on goal before being replaced late on.

Sadio Mane’s return from suspension also ended in a blank, with the Senegal international managing just two shots.

Those currently doubling up on the Reds’ attack may well be reconsidering such a tactic ahead of back-to-back encounters with Man United and trip to Spurs straight after the international break.

Meanwhile, Newcastle remain a tough team to break down.

Only David de Gea is owned by more managers than goalkeeper Rob Elliot’s 24.7% base, but in the absence of clean sheets – he’s managed just two this season – the Geordies’ defensive strength is starting to count against him.

Elliot failed to provide a save point for the second match running as Liverpool were kept to just two shots on target all match. But the Mapgies stopper perhaps remains the obvious route into their backline, given his 4.1 price point.

Newcastle have now conceded more than one goal in a match just the once this season – and that was when they were reduced to ten men in Gameweek 1, plus they face a favourable run over the next four (sot CRY bur BOU).

Elliot’s stock is also boosted by the new uncertainty surrounding Chancel Mbemba (4.0), with the defender failing to start only his second match this season on Sunday.

The reason for his absence was unexplained, with the consensus being that Rafa Benitez simply decided to hand him a rest. But with Mbemba due to depart for long-haul flights with DR Congo over the break, his recall at Southampton for Gameweek 8 could be in doubt.

At the other end of the pitch, Joselu was fortunate with a ricochet to record his second goal of the season from a Jonjo Shelvey through-ball.

The Spaniard’s 5.5 price tag makes him an attractive third striker option – and one who has fired in more attempts than all but four frontmen this season.

The side’s upcoming fixtures might also play into the hands of a man who has scored in two of his last three home outings.

Newcastle will entertain Crystal Palace, Bournemouth and Watford, and with trips to Southampton, Burnley and West Brom also to come over the next seven Gameweeks, investment in key assets front or back could pay off.

But those pondering Matt Ritchie’s appeal may want to hold fire – the winger has today been withdrawn from Scotland’s squad having picked up a knock in Sunday’s match.

Arsenal assets deliver mixed blessings

It was a nasty week for a host of big-ticket striker owners, so at least Alexandre Lacazette had one thing going for him yesterday – he didn’t get injured.

The Arsenal man had enjoyed a surge in ownership of 265,000 ahead of the match against Brighton. His new managers then endured an uninspiring blank during it as he failed to score at home for the first time this season.

That came as a particular blow to the 4.56% who captained him, making him the third most popular armband choice of Gameweek 7, and he was eventually hooked for Olivier Giroud after 70 minutes.

Lacazette has been involved in all seven league matches this season, but has lasted longer than 80 minutes in only two of them.

Arsene Wenger clearly views him as a work in progress. But at 10.4, we could be excused for expecting rather more of a finished article.

Alexis Sanchez is most assuredly that, and he made it back-to-back assists in a busy display that included eight shots and six key passes.

The signs of a return to form are starting to shine, though, although his 11.9 price tag demands rather more than 11 points from a promising couple of Gameweeks. On the upside, Watford, Everton and Swansea in the next three hands him the chance to build on this busy display.

Alex Iwobi (5.1) started for the second match in three and scored his first goal of the season. His price is eye-catching, but Mesut Ozil waits in the wings.

At the back, Arsenal made it four consecutive clean sheets, with Hector Bellerin adding an assist and two bonus points for his 10.4% ownership.

But the star of the show was Nacho Monreal, who opened the scoring and claimed maximum bonus on the way to a 15-point haul.

The Spaniard has now raked in 38 points over the last four Gameweeks, earning at least one bonus point per match along the way. He’s also played every single minute of the league season for the Gunners thus far – not bad for a man whose 5.4 price tag makes him one of the cheapest ways into a currently resilient Arsenal backline.

As for Brighton, they gave a good account of themselves, particularly considering the absence of the suspended Tomer Hemed up front.

Midfielder Izzy Brown was used as the lone striker, with veteran Glenn Murray given 14 minutes as he continues to look for match fitness, but Pascal Gross remains the Seagulls’ most potent pick ahead of a good run of fixtures.

In defence, Lewis Dunk now looks the cheapest secure starter at 4.4 after the similarly-priced Markus Suttner dropped to the bench for the first time this season.

Toffees still coming unstuck

Everton’s woes continued as they slammed into the brick wall that is Burnley away from home.

The Toffees fired in 23 shots, but scored with none of them, and Nick Pope continued to channel his inner Tom Heaton in the Burnley goal, picking up save points for the third time in four matches since the England keeper was injured.

Pope also bagged two bonus points, but the bonus king remains Stephen Ward, who now has seven of them over the same time frame.

His maximum yesterday, and an assist for Jeff Hendrick’s winner, helped him to 41 points for the season – enough for third place in the Fantasy Premier League defenders’ chart.

And with all for just 4.6, it’s no surprise to see that Ward is among the top five for transfers in over the last 24 hours.

Potential differentials further up the pitch, Robbie Brady (2.2%) and Chris Wood (2.7%) both blanked, but Burnley’s next three home matches – West Ham, Newcastle and Swansea City – offer the promise of better days, while a trip to Southampton should also hand the defence a chance to flex their away muscles once again.

Incredibly, Burnley’s total of eight points away from home is already more than they managed in 2016/17. And that’s all the more impressive when you consider that their four road trips have consisted of visits to Chelsea, Spurs, Liverpool and the Toffees – four of the five teams for points accrued in front of their own supporters in the previous campaign.

Clearly, despite the loss of Michael Keane to Everton and Heaton to injury, Sean Dyche’s side are made of sterner stuff this time around.

Beleaguered Everton coach Ronald Koeman dropped the well-owned Wayne Rooney to the bench in a bid to add more pace to his attack, with Oumar Niasse, Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Nikola Vlasic all starting.

The home side were certainly more dynamic than of late, but their lack of a cutting edge grows more apparent by the week and Rooney, at 7.4 and with five straight blanks in the league, has become a costly mistake for many.

At 11.5% ownership, he remains their most popular player but the exodus is picking up pace, with over 22,000 parting company since the weekend.

The Toffees lost just twice in the league at Goodison Park last season. They’ve managed to equal that in four matches this time around.

Their schedule is excellent, their prospects anything but.

Smooth for me, got in Cresswell to make my first 4-3-3 a success. Gone up 900,000 places in the last two weeks.

As ever though, maintaining that may be tricky. Happy enough though, especially with Ben Davies.

      Captained Kane over Lukaku basically.

Was hoping Lukaku blanked against Palace for an even bigger OR jump. FPL weird like that sometimes.

Rough: Captained Lukaku over Kane. Rank still below the 2m mark.

Smooth: Had Ben Davies' points & have 2 FT's into an international break with wildcard still in tact.

Nicely played. You wouldn't get more than 40pts from it even on a BGW/DGW imo.Had an exceptional week myself with the chip still intact 🙂

Doubt that very much, in a blank gameweek with minimal fixtures everyone will have a template 5 or 6, you'll be locked in with everyone on this site with the same players, doubt you'll be outscoring anyone by 40 points in that situation.

Killer Job mate! I’m guessing (and would be even more impressed, honestly) that your Spurs-StockUp consisted of Kane, Bavies, & Tripper? Cause my Trio of Alli, Erikson, & Bavies was more frustrating than using a just-slightly darker shade of paint to touch up the living room wall! (sorry...was also a highlight of my crappy RealLife Week)
**SideNote> to @FPLfreddie concerning your Reply^(above): Think maybe u miss-understood KTK’s post, or miss-wrote what you meant? Either way, I can’t dig what you’re laying down?

          I went from this:

          Fabianski
          Alonso, kolasinac, bavies, mee
          Richarlison, Ritchie, miki, mahrez
          Jesus, aguero

          To this:
          Foster
          Monreal, bavies, trippier, cresswell
Miki, Ramsey, Carroll (bailly didn't play)
          Lukaku, (k)ane, laca

Just figured arsenal united and Spurs would all get cleanies and the strikers would wrap up the points. Hence the reduced midfielders

But for my team I'd say it just worked out like that because aguero got injured and those 3 teams had great fixtures.

Well put tho, not sure what Fred is on about.

Smooth. 40 odd points from captain Kane and Davies. Daniels with a farewell clean sheet.

Rough: Did Agüero > Morata on Friday after Kun's injury news - feels pretty frustrating when your free transfers are all taken up by replacing injured players, and you can't update the rest of the team!

Smooth: Davies, Kane, Lukaku (c) and holding onto Jones still meant a decent green arrow.

Cracking start 436 points for 51k rank, only made 4 transfers too. Had planned to sell Jesus for Lukaku but held tight so actually wasted an FT last week!

Smooth for me - played the free hit chip, the main successes were bringing in B.Davies and Monreal; Hart and Lukaku also proved worthwhile. On top of that I already had Trippier, Coutinho and Kane. Finished with a 103pt bonanza (would have scored 68 without it)

Nice smooth this gameweek – had Hemed, Aguero, Mendy and a doubtful Jones to deal with, so chose to play the free hit chip:

Jones & Mendy to Monreal & mee (+15)
      Silva & Caroll to A.Carrol & Coutinho (+6)
      Aguero to Lukaku (+7)

Ended up on 96, thanks to davies, for a nice rank boost 🙂

Think its a good result, but time will tell…. could have just taken a -8 in hindsight!

Smooth this week of 71 points with no changes made to my team. Moved up 925,283 spots in the last two weeks.

Mugged ... Only getting 190 / 270 minutes from Kane / Laca / Morata and seeing Lukaku play the full 90

Best moment of the week ... Richarlison's very late goal (though where were the BAPS for a goal and an assist?)

Lot's of smooths really with an almost 900k jump in 2 GW's to a decent OR of 70k.

The hokey-cokey of Lukaku - Aguero - Lukaku yielded a net 10 points (without any captaincy bonus). Kane (C) + Davies combo was this week's big differential in all my MLs which has taken me near the top in most of the cash leagues. Forster penalty save, Choupo assist, Bellerin blocked shot giving an assist + 2 baps all sweetened the deal even more and this the highest I've been ranked in the past 5 seasons.

Picking a rough after such a lucky week is a bit pointless. Have played the WC and now hunting for TV.

Very smooth. Will be tough to beat that one

Transferred out Mendy for Monreal. Got a full house in defense with Bavies, Monreal, Jones, Kolasinac and Forster (sweet penalty save) for a monster 52 pts from defense alone. Captained Lukaku and have Kane. Only the midfielders blanked.

88pt total and a rank jump of almost 500k. Still just inside the 70k atm. Very happy with that. On WC atm and will keep a strong defense. There is so much value in defense this season.

Rough - Used my free hit chip and brought in the one safe United defender after Valencia and Jones were classed as doubts, guess which one didn't play?

Smooth - Pretty much everything else, scored 98 (old team scored 61) had Trippier, Bellerin, Davies, Coutinho, Lukaku and Kane all double digit, only blank in the week was Lacazette, even Choupo got an assist.

37 point profit on the old team and a rank rise from 472k to 24k, very smooth week to build on.

Smooth: Clean sheets (5/5 this GW)

I've had 23/31 CS success from the GK and defenders I played this season
138 points(without bonus, goals, assists & saves) which averages 4.45
171 points in total and average 5.52

      DDG 6/7
      Lowe 5/6
      Dawson 3/5
      Mee 3/5
      Kolasinac 2/2
      Yoshida 2/3
      Jones 1/1
      Bavies 1/2

4-3-3 which can be switched to a 3-4-3 on occasion has to be the way this season I guess. I'm sure there must be other managers who's got even better stats on this.

Very smooth. Had to replace Aguero. Having already used my FT I was considering taking out Ben Davies and taking an 8 point hit so I could get Kane. I would have been struggilng to score much over 30 but I used the Free Hit and got 107.

Rough: My first hit of the season cost me 6 points.

      Mendy (Cork: 3) > Azpi (2)
      Mkhitaryan (3) > Sanchez (6)
      Jesus (5) > Morata (1)
      Without hit (11) > With hit (5)

I had to do Jesus > Morata for a hit to find the 0.1m I needed for Sanchez. I nearly chose Monreal over Azpi, which would have saved me the agro of losing Jesus' points and potentially replacing Morata (back to Jesus?) for another hit!

Smooth: I now own Azpi, Sanchez and Morata, which makes me very happy! Plus Davies and (K)ane brought me a green arrow. So long as Morata is fit, my 5-2-3 survives another week, and perhaps looks stronger than ever.

Went up 900k and 74 points.

Like Jonty, I invested in a WHU defender and played 433 for the first time sensing that this may be the way to go given the poor returns from the midfielders. So the deadwood that is TAA was booted and in came Fonte.

A big shout out to the Members' area though. Fonte came into my team through his goal attempts/penalty box touches so at 4.9, I could see he was good value and was rewarded with a cs plus 2 baps.

Smooth; started the gameweek with Kane (C) and Davies and my main rival had Eriksen. Also smooth was actually Lukaku no more than 6points in a game that he could have gotten much more and not having him seems for now like a okish move. My predicted Burnley CS came inbut benched Francis over Bertrand so left some points on the bench, Played 4-3-3 which ultimately lead to a 71points decent ish week in total.
Rough; midfield gathered only 8points between them, Sala, Silva and Mkhi, kind of lacklustre that. Going into Chelsea-City with 4 players left and only 4 points behind my main rival was good and a Jesus assist and a Mee CS was good but two Liverpool attackers gaining 3 points was a downer in more than one way. Cresswell in for Jones was not needed and i knew it was a fake from Mou but he is injured now and won´t rise in price so not a big deal really, not even sure i want him for the next 4. Went up 600k, into 550k so can´t complain.

Look at it this way. That's a long list you can change and make more points. Agreed, there are better options for each of them. Rather want to do that now or maybe 3rd international break? Some of those looks like to be fallin in price as well. If you dont WC you'd have to take some hits imo.

And Foster is useless from now on and Elliot has couple tricky match ups. Fabianski rotation works great.

Great fixtures and I can't afford Hazard without ripping up my team.

I'm looking at this as well. DBL Chelsea DF with morata (if fit).

MC on the other hand you can select a mid in the 8m range to go with Jesus and a DF

    This Morata news is frustrating.

Could have scored 2 or 3 vs Palace and now is the contemplation whether to sell.

I've made a profit on him, like most, but could be opportune moment to bring in Jesus.

Means keeping Alli who is bound to go to 9.4.

Might be a bit early to discuss but with Spurs facing Real Madrid on 17/10 , Liverpool on 22/10, West Ham 25/10 and Finally Man United on 28/10

Can we expect some big rotation in the Bournemouth game on 14/10 after the international break or would the rotation happen during the Real Madrid game since Spurs are already level as top of their CL group?

      basics

  11. Fixture blocks and rotation
    Ludo
    • 10 Years
    6 years, 8 months ago

Plenty of fantasy managers are playing their wildcards over the international break, and with it comes the opportunity to set our teams up for the long-term. A large part of that planning comes from looking at the fixtures, to work out defensive rotations. By rotating cheap defenders, starting the player with the best fixture every week, funds can instead be focused on ‘must-have’ attacking players.

Premier League fixture lists can be broken up into rotation blocks – there are ten of them this season. The first rotation block of 2017/18 was GW1-GW2 – when the fixtures were released, every team was scheduled to play once at home, and once away (either HA or AH). If you know the ten teams on each side of a block, you can plan a rotation that gives you a home player every week.

GW7-GW8 was another two gameweek rotation block, but after that, there is a four gameweek block from GW9-GW12 (every team plays either HAHA or AHAH), and a six gameweek block from GW13-GW18 (every team plays either HAAHHA or AHHAAH). The result of these two unusually long blocks next to each other is that there are 52 perfect home and away rotation pairings for the ten gameweeks, from GW9-GW18:

Huddersfield, Newcastle, Southampton, Swansea, Tottenham and West Ham rotate home and away with Brighton, Leicester, Bournemouth, West Brom, Arsenal and Watford.

Burnley, Crystal Palace, Liverpool and Man Utd rotate home and away with Chelsea, Stoke, Everton and Man City.

However, a large part of the appeal of a defensive rotation is that it saves money. With that in mind, I’m only looking at rotations between teams with a nailed-on defender, priced at 4.6 or less. This can be the subject of serious debate amongst fantasy managers, so for the sake of clarity, here are the teams I’m including in that description:

Bournemouth (Francis is captain, and starts when available) Burnley, Brighton, Crystal Palace (Fosu-Mensah started the first six, including two under Hodgson, but couldn’t play his parent club at Old Trafford), Huddersfield, Leicester, Newcastle, Stoke (I think Wimmer will keep his place when everyone is fit), Swansea and Watford.

I’ve not included Everton or Liverpool, where there are cheap options at full back, such as Martina, Holgate and Kenny for Everton, and Moreno, Gomez, and Alexander-Arnold for Liverpool. With European football on the menu for those sides, I don’t expect any of these players to be nailed-on.

Ideally, what you’re looking for in these rotations is a home fixture, against a weaker team. With that in mind, of those ten teams with a cheap starter in defence, here’s how many of their five home games from GW9-GW18 are not against one of the teams that finished in the top six last season:

    Crystal Palace – 5/5
    Newcastle – 5/5
    Brighton – 4/5
    Burnley – 4/5
    Stoke – 4/5
    Swansea – 4/5
    Bournemouth – 3/5
    Leicester – 3/5
    Watford – 3/5
    Huddersfield – 2/5

Any decent wildcard rotation should also have a strong starter for GW8, of course. Of the ten teams above, six have a home game next, four of which are not against top six opposition - Burnley (WHU), Brighton (EVE), Leicester (WBA) and Swansea (HUD).

Putting it all together, here are my perfect rotations for the next eleven gameweeks, giving eleven consecutive home matches, and featuring at least one of those four teams with a good fixture in GW8. They’re ordered by how many of their eleven home fixtures are not against a top six side, but where the home team does play one of the big boys, I’ve listed the away team’s fixture in brackets:

    10/11 - Brighton and Newcastle – EVE/CRY/SOU/BOU/STK/WAT/CRY/LIV (che)/LEI/EVE/BUR
    9/11 - Brighton and Swansea – HUD/LEI/SOU/BHA/STK/BOU/CRY/LIV (stk)/WBA/MCI (tot)/BUR
    9/11 - Burnley and Stoke – WHU/BOU/NEW/LEI/SWA/ARS (cry)/LIV (bou)/SWA/WAT/STK/WHU
    9/11 - Leicester and Newcastle – WBA/CRY/EVE/BOU/MCI (mun)/WAT/TOT (wba)/BUR/LEI/EVE/CRY
    8/11 - Swansea and Bournemouth – HUD/LEI/CHE (ars)/BHA/HUD/BOU/BUR/SOU/WBA/MCI (mun)/LIV (eve)
    8/11 - Swansea and Leicester – HUD/LEI/EVE/BHA/MCI (bur)/BOU/TOT (che)/BUR/WBA/MCI (sou)/CRY
    8/11 - Swansea and Watford – HUD/LEI/STK/BHA/WHU/BOU/MUN (che)/TOT (stk)/WBA/MCI (cry)/HUD
    7/11 - Huddersfield and Brighton – EVE/MUN (whu)/SOU/WBA/STK/MCI (mun)/CRY/LIV (eve)/BHA/CHE (tot)/CRY
    6/11 - Huddersfield and Leicester – WBA/MUN (swa)/EVE/WBA/MCI (bou)/MCI (whu)/TOT (ars)/BUR/BHA/CHE (sot)/CRY

      1. Cok3y5murf

        I agree with Hotdogs here.

Great work, but planning for more than 3-4 weeks rarely works out. Things can change so much in 11 weeks. Team form, player injuries, suspensions, etc.

Also, I don't understand the appeal of home games over away games to this extent. These teams keep clean sheets in away games too.

Southampton - 3 clean sheets so far, 2 of them away from home.
Huddersfield - 4 clean sheets so far, 2 of them away from home.
Newcastle - 2 clean sheets so far, 1 away from home.

So why plan only for home games?

        1. Ludo
          • 10 Years
          6 years, 8 months ago

The top six averaged a clean sheet every 0.38 games last season.

The bottom fourteen averaged one every 0.24 games.

However, at home to non-top six opposition, the bottom fourteen averaged a clean sheet every 0.40 games.

55% of top six clean sheets were at home, compared to 65% of bottom fourteen clean sheets. The top six also kept 16% of their clean sheets against each other, compared to the bottom fourteen keeping 13% of their clean sheets against the top six.

So yes, weaker teams do keep clean sheets away from home - over a third of their total, which is a significant amount. In the long run, though, just focusing on home games not against the top six should pay off, as weaker teams are better suited to rotation than strong sides - they're more predictable.

It can work, you just need nailed on players, teams who are decent at home, and a bit of luck, like with everything in this game.

My Löwe and Suttner home and away rotation for the start of the season wouldn't have had many takers, with two promoted teams, but cry/NEW/SOU/WBA/LEI/NEW ended up as 6/6/6/2/6/6 for 32 points - two more than Alonso managed in the same time frame.

Suttner benched and Lowe subbed on 59 minutes, could have happened any time.

Fantastic post and an issue I'm taking into account already on my wildcard with Ward and Wimmer.

I tend to look at quality of fixture above Home or Away and Burnley and Stoke's rotation is superb. Also Stoke are a great example of a team that prefers home comforts.

I also like Elliot and Fabianski rotation.....not strict H & A ....but mostly they work out well and Fabs save potential helps him in trickier matches.

Yep - in an ideal world I'd have Gomes and Fabianski.

But happy with just one of these rotations in defence and having my three other defenders as ones I'll play every week .

Factoring in Fabianski's saves and ability to be tricky away - eg Spurs and West Ham for most of the game. Swansea's rotation possibilities are increased.

Stoke and Burnely are good home teams.

Swansea are an odd one this season. Doing really well in away games. Long term tho I expect them to pick up CS at home and concede away.

Either way Fabianski is great to own - he's top for saves- which season after season produces Fantasy points.

From Schwarzer to James to Boruc to Heaton getting the season's top saver brings points.

Fabianski is that man this season on the evidence we have after 7 gwks.

I think if you get Fabianski, you play him every week, with Elliot there as backup - you might as well have Nordfeldt! I don't see any rotation between the two, and Fabianski is a great pick for save points, particularly away from home - you'll miss out by playing the fixtures with Elliot.

No mention of Hart because I was focusing on defenders, where West Ham don't have a secure option below 4.9.

I'm no real fan of rotating keepers, with save points coming more frequently in away games and difficult fixtures - my preference is to spend as little as possible, and/or grab a save machine like Pope or Fabianski and play them every week.

I would place any rotation with burnley higher than others
combined heaton and pope are only a few saves short of flappy total, they would also be on same points but for mid game injury that cost a CS and so far the only minus point dropped was the late Chelsea goal in week 1.

I think I find rotation overrated. I even find fixtures overrated. Not that I do not plan according to them. But fixtures are not flawless and rotation means fixtures times fixtures so they will fail more frequently than one expects. Nevertheless, the post has got a lot of homework done and thanks; I will not argue that unrotation is better than rotation. I think I only want to go with the feeling of the player.

      New article repost:New article:

A lot of people seem to be planning to dump Lukaku. Looking at it, I think this is a huge risk, small reward move. Sure, his chances have dipped with Pogba injured and yes he isn't proving Kane-level explosive and yes he isn't on pens...

But, he should've had two at least yesterday (and a couple of assists), he's on form, undroppable, scoring consistently and the next two are against weaker defences. He's also massively owned. And playing for the joint leaders of the league.

Furthermore, it comes at a time when two of his competition - Aguero and Morata - are injured, Firmino is out of form and Vardy is (to a degree) hit and miss.

Kane stands alone as the premium striker to own, but with all of these factors it's hard to dismiss Lukaku at present. The argument that you'll downgrade that spot and improve your midfield and defence has traction, but it relies on him blanking (which he has shown little sign of doing) and your replacements averaging more than he does.

Of course, there are a billion ways to play this game. Punts win games, and fortune favours the etc etc...but a striker who is massively owned averaging over 7 points a game seems an odd choice to drop.

Fair point, but i think the feeling is that 7 points a game is poor considering the fixtures he has had, and Lukaku traditionally tends to do better against weaker opposition. With liverpool away next (Mourinho may park the bus), and spurs, Chelsea on the horizon, people just feel Jesus/Morata have much easier fixtures and will probably score more over those weeks

I understand that argument, I also prefer teams with three strikers in - if he's part of a 2 maybe he's more susceptible. I expect him to score against Liverpool and Huddersfield. And if he does I probably won't ditch him for the two toughies.

I have Lukaku and am on WC. He's toast for me til GW12, when he'll come straight back in

He's always been a flat track bully (at best) and I just don't see him scoring big in their next 4, so he can do one til then.

Kane + Jesus + Morata / Vardy for the next 4 games

Next two is my test case. Liverpool always concede, and Hud away is a nice fixture.

Flat track bully for sure, but we have yet to see him in a top team against other top teams - this is our first test of that.

Lukaku is a finisher, so depends if Mou's teams will provide chances in the tougher games.

Liverpool may well concede but Jose is not going to go there and play an open game or go on the attack because he will play right into their hands.

The game is at Anfield not Old Trafford, he'll more than likely look to be compact and stop their attacking threat then hit them on the break, for Liverpool's defence to be tested they would need to be attacked frequently, not sure Jose sets up in big away games to play this way.

You have to learn to let go 😀
Sticking to him now while his fixtures turn is exactly like what happened with Ibra last season
Also only getting 1 goal against CPL with a disappointment for many since the coming fixtures are tougher and Mourinho could well revert back to the 1-0 defending strategy

On form in fantasy terms, and stats-wise, which is really what we're looking at. Don't think he's been poor personally, not on fire, but working well in that system.

Should have had more, vs a truly woeful side without a goal to their name this season.

Utd have had easy fixtures thus far. Now they stiffen considerably. He has scored 7 in 8. I very much doubt he will do that in the next 8. But someone else with better fixtures might.

He could be this years Costa. Only more expensive.

I think it is a risk for sure, but i think its quite likely those who do well over the run to xmas will be those who ditch and get their replacement choice correct.

Can't envisage captaining him for the near future.

Hudds is the only good game on paper, but City and Chelsea have strong home games that week.

A lot of money for a player that you can't confidently place the armband on.

can not think of a better striker to have along side Kane and Morata/Jesus to have as an option for Captain ... very happy with my Lukaku captain choice in the first two weeks and swapped to Kane and Morata since. Having these 3 really gives a great option to rotate the armband ... and if you get it wrong then normally there is very little down side.

          Total captain score 132
Captain score had you swapped all C / VC 42
Captain score as % of overall score 33.59%
          Highest possible captain score 180
Captain score as % of your highest possible captain score 73.33%
          Number of different captains 3

10 goals and an assist in 11 games in all competitions including a goal away to Real Madrid and 2 away to CSKA Moscow - more goals away from home than at home and he can only score against the teams he plays ... but he hasn't disappointed yet and it would seem a risk to assume he will dry up any worse than other forwards except Kane.

You're forgetting a crucial factor - against better sides Mourinho plays not to lose. He will batten down the hatches. Plus, shite defence or not, Liverpool will be very difficult at Anfield. Kaku out, Jesus or Morata in.

With big risks come big gains. Lukaku expensive, but he's not explosive. Morata, Aguero, Jesus and Lacazette are better options alongside Kane. Lukaku's fixtures are tightening up too and his stats dont look great. I'm looking at getting rid of Lukaku now for Jesus (Got Kane and Rashford) and investing in my midfield with Hazard and Sanchez both credible candidates right now, and both have impressive fixtures. Its a risk of course, especially with his high ownership but Im not missing out on City, Chelsea and Spurs plum fixtures.

Easy answer, watching him play, he’s not looking that convincing. He may have 7 in 7, but United haven’t really been tested yet. Jesus for example, looks a real threat. Now he is nailed on due to Aguero, interest has switched by many. Go with your stats, but don’t rely on them. Watching the games forms my opinions mainly and I see Lukaku struggling, but that’s my opinion

"should have had two at least yesterday and a couple of assists" ... "he's on form"

There's the case against ... an in form player, playing for a top team that is scoring multiple goals - so where are his braces or hat-tricks?

You could also argue that he always scores late on ... maybe Jose will play him 90 minutes every single game but is that sustainable all season .. other managers seem to gives their main strikers a small rest each week

I just don't feel that declining figure of 7 PPG is a big enough threat to be a must have

Some of the comments against Lukaku here are just absurd. Fair enough going without him, but saying he doesn't deliver enough blah blah while ignoring the form, fitness and rotation risk of a Lacazette/Vardy, Morata and Jesus is downright silly. Your replacements are 1m cheaper. You think they are going to score you hattricks every game? Wake up I say.

Indeed. It's a different season and frankly a very different team to the one last year.

I can see Manu scoring against all those bigger sides and if they do it's a fair chance that it'll be Lukaku who scores.

He came away with 7 points from a good saints side.

Like other have said I don't actually think he is playing very well so if/when he hits some proper form he'll be some asset.

Completely agree with this. Don't see why everyone is so keen this year to find any excuse to drop Lukaku. He's the top scorer in the league and has the highest points per game of all strikers other than Aguero (who is injured).

He's also had the highest number of big chances in the league of all forwards - almost double the number of Kane. That suggests his goals will continue to flow.

No it does not suggest that. Ha had piss easy games. Liverpool hate Utd. They will play a tight game. Then Spurs and Chelsea. Huddersfield could have a few goals yeah but the other three? His big chances will sharply fall.

I offloaded him a few weeks ago, hasn't punished me yet and I don't expect him to with those fixtures.

He's a comfort blanket for many, he's always there to score a goal so they won't let him go. But that's about it, he's not explosive.

Morata and Kane have been excellent for me in his place. I'll probably move Morata on now he's injured but get Jesus.

I'll probably get him back at some point, but I have no interest in him at the moment with those tough fixtures after doing well but not great in a very generous opening set of fixtures.

You make some valid points for keeping Lukaku but the big factor is fixtures. I am on WC so I sense now is a good time to get rid.
In fact, if I was to rate the strikers on current ff form with the fixtures going forward I would have:

        Kane->Kun/Jesus>Morata->Vardy->Lukaku

So for me, he is well down my pecking order at present.

IMO, Kane and Morata (when fit) are shoe ins.

The third striker has to be Jesus now that Kun is out of the picture. I just do not see how we can keep Lukaku at present.

      1FT, 0.4ITB, what should I do?

      Hart (Elliot)
      Bellerin - Valencia - otamendi - (Ake) - (Long)
      Mkhi - Atsu - Ayew - Silva - (Can)
      Lukaku - Kane - Abraham

      Let me know!

Sane or Sterling or Silva is the question... As a City fan, here's my thoughts.

Silva - played almost every minute. City have scored 22 goals and he has assisted 6 and not scored. That's not overwhelming me. Seems to be playing more advanced than last year, due to KDB's deeper role. Most expensive option.

Sterling - increased minutes due to Aguero's injury. Fails the eye test as he misses a lot of chances. Despite lack of minutes still has 5 goals (0 assists which is surprising). Cheapest option.

Sane - increased minutes due to Aguero's injury. Maybe the most dynamic option. Has had very limited mins, but still has 3 goals and 2 assists. Seems slightly overpriced for an option that is not nailed.

      What do people think?

KDB is having a more advanced role now that Aguero is injured

Maybe more reason to favour Sane/Sterling over Silva?

Is KDB a genuine option now? Or too overpriced for people.

I have been having Silva since my WC in GW 3 but if i would go for one of these 3 now i would pick Sterling due to his bigger goal threat compared to Silva and more minutes compared to Sane

Silva safest for minutes but I'm not hugely sold on him as an FPL option because he doesn't score many goals. I'd love to have one of them but avoiding for now.

I like all 3 with the fixtures. Thinking about going with 2 of the 3, see WC below...

What do you think of Jesus? Overpriced too?

To be honest I prefer Jesus to all of them. I have him + will go with one of the above.

Makes it easier to decide if Morata is out 🙂 I'd then go Jesus + one of those 3 (Sterling atm)

I was going to go for Sterling but probably Jesus now because of Morata's injury.

It's a nice conundrum to have. Silva is the obvious safe option but I find it quite boring and would rather a differential too. I would be more inclined on a wildcard to do Sterling or Sane though because they will need to be sold once Aguero is back.

I favour Silva for involvement, eye test, nailed, fantasy returns etc.

Lack of goals is a worry but if Sane and Sterling keep out scoring him for goals the switch is easy.

If Sane or Sterling lose starts and fail then its harder to upgrade.

That's a good policy in general in FPL - ensure you can transfer down.

Pretty smart Jonty. It hurts so much we dont have 4 FWD slots...Jesus passed the eye test most vs Chel with his great vollying and attacking ability but dont see any reason to take out Morata/Lukaku/Kane for him...Or is there??

Silva's also vice captain so should be guaranteed to start every game Kompany is injured for.

has to be silva due to his involvement up top

sterling can only score one type of goal a simple tap in or a stolen pen!

sane is a good player but get used in diff positions and is more of an assister - sterling can't assist (see his rubbish cross this weekend).

i would go silva all day long!

Cannot decide, so I've gone with Sterling and Silva.

Cracking fixtures, and a very dynamic attacking unit, now Pep's style seems to be taking effect.

The price difference is not that much and whilst my heart says Sterling, my mind says Silva.... Sane is the least interesting of the trio for me.

Listening to the FPL stream at lunchtime looks like Mark is going Sterling.

Prefer Sane myself but at 7.9 Sterling could be a great budget route into that City attack.

If you look at the goal threat stats, Sterling blows the opposition all away here. He has the most pen box touches of all midfielders and four goals in the last 4.

For me, Silva's lack of goal threat is a real turn off. I don't want to rely on assists because they can easily dry up.

      D. Silva • Coutinho • Sterling
      Kane • Lukaku • Vardy

I was going to sell but Morata is a bigger issue for me. I was very, very close last night but I think this might be one to take an initial loss on.

At the end of the day, he is more likely to recover that 0.1 than most as he can be explosive.

Missing CL and 1 England game can only help his fitness and minutes and playing Bournemouth and Liverpool should equal goals. After the United game their fixtures are also amazing until 25.

Think having Alli is a patience game as he did this at the start of last season and look what happened.

      Would you do this for a -8 hit. I have 1ft & 0.6itb.
      Firmino out - Vardy in
      Mkhi out - Sterling in
      Hegazi out - Otamendi in

      This leaves 0.0itb

      Will give me for gw8:
      Lossl (Foster)
      Davies, Jones, Otamendi, Mee, Fernandez
      Eriksen, Sterling (Richarlison, Moting, Carroll)
      Kane (c), Lukaku, Vardy

      Thoughts & thanks.

      Foster (elliot)
      Kolasinac BDavies Naughton Simpson (Holgate)
      Mkhi Salah Alli Carroll (Choupo)
      Kane Carroll Lukaku

Initially i was all for Lukaku+Mkhi-->Jesus+Sterling/Silva.
