Scout Notes – Kane Falters in Dismal Double

Double Gameweek 22 finally brings to a close a frenetic period of Fantasy action, but it’s an unhappy end for those who go big on Spurs striker Harry Kane.

Picking through the bones of Spurs’ 1-1 draw with West Ham last night makes for depressing reading for most, if not quite all, FPL managers.

Chief draw of the double Gameweek was Kane, who went into it with back-to-back hat-tricks and came out the other side with three measly points from 112 anti-climactic minutes.

Illness hit the striker over Christmas, but that didn’t dissuade close to 428,000 managers making him the second most popular buy of Gameweek 22.

More than 24% then captained him and 121,000+ played their Triple Captain chip – leading figures for both – only for Kane’s inconsistent Wembley form to bite one and all.

His eight goals in 11 home appearances looks strong, but he’s actually failed to find the net in seven of those matches.

When he scores at Wembley, he generally scores big. But not last night – despite having seven shots, five of which came in the area, against the Hammers.

All is not lost for his 43.5% ownership as Spurs entertain Everton and then travel to Southampton next.

Those match-ups have persuaded more than 100,000 managers to bring him in already, making him the second most purchased player ahead of Gameweek 23 even though the FA Cup third round has to be endured before that.

A spiteful three-match run (MUN liv ARS) then follows at the end of January, which will most likely require a re-evaluation of the various Spurs assets brought in to capitalise on Gameweek 22’s double fixtures.

Kane might well survive that purge, but the chips blown and transfer hits taken to bring him in this week have hurt many now, and could have knock-on effects.

Son shines bright on the night

Across the two teams with double fixtures, no player scored more points than Spurs midfielder Son Heung-min.

His equalising goal against West Ham earned him two bonus for nine points on the night and 12 for the Gameweek.

Andy Carroll, with a brace in Tuesday’s 2-1 win over West Brom, was the only other double Gameweek player to score so many points, but his 0.6% ownership meant the effect of all that was negligible.

Not so Son, who was Gameweek 22’s most bought player, with 498,000 transfers-in.

That took him to 12.6% ownership, and his ever-growing army of managers have certainly reaped the benefits of some excellent home form.

Son has now scored in six of his last seven matches at Wembley and is also enjoying a consistent run in the team, starting in nine of the last ten fixtures.

While the availability of Mousa Dembele and Victor Wanyama gives Mauricio Pochettino the option of shifting to a 3-4-2-1, potentially putting Son’s start at risk, the idea of Spurs lining up without the in-form South Korean seems remote.

Son (8.1) is up to 99 points for the season, which puts him just outside the top ten scoring midfielders and only three points shy of team-mate Dele Alli, who is 0.9 more expensive.

The England international blanked last night, as did Christian Eriksen, but both are in strong enough form – the Dane has produced returns in six of his last eight matches, Alli has two goals and four assists in four – for managers to hold onto them for the next two attractive fixtures at least.

At the back, Spurs have kept back-to-back clean sheets just twice all season, and West Ham’s one shot on target put paid to their chances of that happening again on Thursday.

Those upcoming Everton and Southampton fixtures look like an excellent opportunity to make it third time lucky, but Spurs’ defenders remain relatively expensive for the returns they’re delivering.

The cheapest among them, Kieran Trippier (5.3), is also the most vulnerable to rotation, and so it proved last night as the ex-Burnley man was rewarded for his nine-point showing in Tuesday’s win at Swansea City with a place on the bench against the Hammers as Serge Aurier once again took his place.

Their most owned defender, Ben Davies (13.4%), started consecutive matches for the first time since Gameweek 16, thanks to an injury to Danny Rose.

Fantasy managers will be hoping that situation continues for the next two Gameweeks, if not much further forward than that.

Injury terminates Arnie’s hopes

Spurs players dominated the transfer market for Gameweek 22, with Marko Arnautovic the only West Ham fly in that particular ointment.

The midfielder was third for transfers-in (368,000+) on the back of a consistent spell of form under David Moyes during which he’d scored five times in as many matches.

Arnautovic kept things ticking over with an assist in the win over West Brom, only for a hamstring niggle to rule him out of last night’s match and scupper the double Gameweek plans of 8.8% of FPL managers.

But unless the issue is a serious one, his form and West Ham’s fixtures (hud BOU CRY bha WAT), make the Austrian one to keep for now.

Pre-match, his manager had this to say:

“Marko has got an injury as well. He’s been really important to us, but he’s not fit to play tonight.”

The fact that Carroll was unable to cope with the quick turnaround in matches suggests that the target man’s minutes could be managed by Moyes, with Arnautovic again used as the central striker over at least some of those favourable fixtures. Carroll has played four successive matches just once this season – between Gameweeks 4-7.

Another midfielder who enjoyed a surge in ownership this week was Manuel Lanzini.

Some 68,000+ managers bought into him, more than doubling his ownership, and he produced an assist for Pedro Obiang’s spectacular opener last night.

The Argentine now has five assists from his last six starts and is another well-placed to capitalise on the Hammers’ forthcoming fixtures.

At the back, Angelo Ogbonna and Arthur Masuaku both enjoyed decent Gameweek 22 investment, but produced only four and three points respectively.

It was left to goalkeeper Adrian to bring in slightly better returns, his seven saves at Spurs helping him to six points from the two matches.

He now has three clean sheets and seven save points from his eight appearances since replacing Joe Hart.

At 4.3, he remains a very viable rotation partner for Burnley’s Nick Pope, particularly when the Clarets host both Manchester clubs across Gameweeks 24 and 26.

Gomez might be a rotation threat with TAA form and VVD coming in.
      Find a place for Alonso
Niasse is almost dead as an fpl asset. Go with Quaner or Swansea's Ayew.
Work on those changes then bring me your next draft 😉

Loads of talk on here about the free chip this week.

I used mine this week and ended up 21 points better off (would have been a lot better if Alonso and son hadn’t scored)

I don’t just look at it as 21 points, it may even be a lot better. For example - my moves last week were haz & Richarlison out for son & Alli before I went with free hit due to injuries, fixtures etc.

This week I am now thinking of hazard (c), if I hadn’t done free hit I wouldn’t even own him and my plan was Aguero in this week with a -4 and captain Kane.

It may then end up costing me points, but it’s interesting to see how far you can look at points gained etc.

I think you definitely need to take into consideration the squad you had for GW21 compared to all those who had a lot of assets benched

The numbers didn't fall as kindly as they could but the FH still made around 30 points over rivals

Yeah I’m happy with my gain. Geeen arrow from 15k to 5k so can’t moan.

I’m really interested to see how the FH goes for people in the blank GW. I don’t think it’s going to be as good as people think, although still profitable

its swings and roundabouts really. I was the same - played FH and got about 30 points more than I would have, which is good & still now have Haz and KDB on my team but have to wave goodbye to Arnautavic & Son who I would have kept
Also I've had to use a FT already to buy Kane before his price rise..

In a way a bit underwhelming

Agreed. I'm happy to still have De Bruyne and Richarlison who I would've sold. Believe it or not I'm happy to still have Morata as well. I had downgraded him to Quaner before deciding on Free Hit. Morata may be out of form but he has good fixtures and is fairly easy to upgrade to Aguero or downgrade to Firmino. Can't run away from a Quaner.

  7. The 'Kane Can't Score Against the Worst' Conundrum
    Kings of Lyon ★

I was having a look at the worst away defences in the PL by analysing how many shots theyve conceded in the box. The worst 5 are

    West Ham
    Swansea
    Burnley
    Bournemouth
    Everton

If you've watched any football this season its hardly surprising to find these names here. What does start the alarm bells ringing is when you look at Harry Kanes home returns against the worst away defences....

    West Ham - 2 points
    Swansea - 2 points
    Burnley - 2 points
    Bournemouth - 2 points

Mr Kane is at home to the 5th worst away defence next GW. Based on this back-of-the-fag-packet anaysis I am certainly looking at putting the armband elsewhere.

There are numerous 'Kane theories' out there and nothing concrete but what is for certain is that we cannot trust him the way we could trust RvP, Suarez or Drogba

It's not got much to to with Kane himself. Spurs are bad against teams who sit back and defend with 8 men. They don't have the guile, craft, pace, tempo.. whatever it is to create chances consistently throughout the game and tire out a packed defense.

Dier, Dembele, Sissoko have offered very little in terms of moving the ball quickly in those games.

Rubbish spurs create loads of chances in these games. The key thing is game state, if spurs get an early goal they hammer these teams but as with a lot of top teams they struggle with breaking down 11 man defence. City are the only team that seem to be slightly immune to this tactic.

If you go through a team like West Ham ... a lot of the goals they have conceded have been to non-forwards

Kane really didn't have much hope of scoring in the box last night ... some teams focus heavily on shutting out the forwards but still have bad defences

When I looked at possession many of those were also sides that were happy to soak up pressure and concede possession. Indeed that research also flagged up that Southampton were a team he could score against at home - as they actually at the time liked to keep possession.

I think your theory is very similar as conceding possession and conceding lots of shots in the box go together.

What Everton will do is try to copy what Moyes and the other managers have done. Go all out defence, concede possession, allow lots of shots - but limit big chances.

Maybe what we need to assess is whether Everton concede big chances. One for the number crunchers. Could be key to this.

Ok, so it looks like Everton in their last four have conceded half the big chances as Southampton (the benchmark of Kane scoring success at Wembley)...but have conceded more shots than anyone else. This indicates that Everton are happy to concede lots of shots but not giving opposing strikers too many clear cut chances.

it's just luck - his stats barely change most matches - sometimes they go in, sometimes they don't

if it wasn't for fantasy we would be in unison lauding him as the great striker of this generation - as it is we're looking for reasons to slam him because of his "inflated price"

the simple fact is Kane is too expensive to rotate in and out as the cookie crumbles

either have him all season and live with the blanks or never get him and live with the big hauls

I've been in camp A all season and have captained him to 5 successes and 5 failures so far.

The problem is Spurs don't have the suppliers to deal with a bus, their build up is so laborious that he just gets no service or crowded out. Bus parking is now common by the home 'minnow' as well now, it took his own exceptional pass v Swansea to break them open, other than the offside set piece.

They need Rose back fit (and that is a doubt in several respects) and they miss Walker badly - both these guys have genuine pace and ability to get around the back or at least drag defenders out of the middle.

Yes they sold their pace on the flanks - or lost it through injury - that was essential to their set up.

Without the "horns of the bull" attack system they just bundle through the middle and team flood them with bodies.

Late to the party, but here's my two cents anyway..

Couple of factors to take in to consideration:

          1. You're forgetting the fact that Spurs are playing "home" games at Wembley, a place which is not their true "home".

          2. The majority of teams that travel to Wembley sit 8 players behind the ball.

          3. They are relying solely on Eriksen to create the chances against what is usually an 8 man defence. Dier, Dembele, Winks and even Alli to a certain degree, don't have the nous to pick the lock.

Taking these factors into account, when you look at his "home" record against these teams prior to this season (14 games, 13 goals, 2 assists), it's easy to see that he's a great and world class striker.

simply based on watching last nights game their pace of play dramatically increased when dier and sissoko went off and wanyama came on. Its possible it may be down to WHU having just scored but hopefully poch realises dier is not a fast paced sitting mid and sissoko seems to think his job is to run the ball into the corners then lose it the better.

      1) Poch's aversion to 4-4-2 at home against weaker sides is ridiculous. Play Llorente and Kane up front against these sides at Wembley.
      2) Davies and Trippier are 'away from home' players. Their lack of pace destroys Spurs' attacks at Wembley as they don't get in behind. Even more reason as to why Llorente should play if one or both of these are at full-back. Watch the Southampton game to see the impact of Rose and Aurier as a combo on Spurs' ability to score goals.

        Completely agree with 1)
Completely disagree with 2) (which I think completely contradicts 1).
It's a complete myth that pace equals creativity when playing at home against bus parkers. There is nowhere for this pace to go when the entire game is being played in front of the entire opposition eleven. The key to unlocking these defences is vision and/or getting the ball wide for quality crossing opportunities. Both Davies and Trippier are excellent at this and need targets like Llorente in the box to aim at.

One key to unlocking a packed defence is getting yo the byline and cutting it back.

The other is to have midfielders in the "final third" break the game lines and continue darting runs in behind.

Spurs dont do either of these particularly well.

Simple. If you are at home and one or both of Aurier and Rose can't play:

          Lloris
          Trippier Vertonghen Sanchez Davies
          Son Eriksen Dier Lamela
          Llorente Kane

If you are at home and both of Aurier and Rose can play:

          Lloris
          Dier Vertonghen Sanchez
          Aurier Dier Eriksen Rose
          Alli Son
          Kane

If you are away from home:

          Lloris
          Dier Vertonghen Sanchez
          Trippier Eriksen Dembele Davies
          Alli Son
          Kane

Sorry KOL but this is why this place is full of bad advice and herd mentality. This odd post gets hulked and now people will agree just because of that.

You have just above said ''is he a great striker if he can't score against

      West Ham
      Swansea
      Burnley
      Bournemouth
      Everton
      Palace
      Brighton ''

Wow just wow. He has scored more goals this year than Lionel Messi. Sorry but you said yourself this post is back of fag packet stuff and so is your ridiculous assertion of Kane not being a great player.

Obvious elephant in the room is that Pochettino has not found a way of changing things up.
Getting caught like this playing the same way so many times has to come down to the manager.
Stoke was a different game as it was Stoke's mids who couldn't follow a game plan.
City adapt to these "bus" tactics by changing formation & style.

I used Free Hit Chip and got about +31 additional points in the last gameweek.

    > My Non-FH team scored net 38 points after hits : 46 + (-8)
    > FH team scored 69 points (it could be 14 points more if I had enough time to switched Mahrez for Vardy before deadline)

Also, I have the team with KDB, who I transferred out for Eriksen, back.

In summary, I feel it was a good use of the FH chip.

Gross, DCL --> Lingard, Quaner (-4)

United's Stoke fixture looks almost too good to pass up and I don't really want to ship Arnie. Don't mind a hot either. It'll leave me with:

    Alonso / Otamendi / Mee / Ogbonna / Hunemeier

One of those stupid ones where if the player runs normally he gets tripped and it's a penalty, instead he successfully hurdles the tackle, realises what he's done and pulls his legs up under him and flops. Honestly not sure what the 'right' decision is - it's 100% a dive, but arguably a penalty also.

Moving on to more important matters, who the hell put that audio with that video? 😆

It has to be a dive imo the defenders never touched the attacking player.

The big question is for me is why Mary had a little Lamb was used for the audio?
I am going to be having nightmares about that.

    2. Ramboros

      That's a penalty. It's clear as day.

People need to stop this silly nonsense of thinking a foul isn't a foul just because players are theatrical. Players are forced to go to the ground because referees have a nasty tendency to not call fouls where players stay on their feet. In this case there's no doubt that the player is being hindered by two tackles.

      1. Sancidino
        • 7 Years
        6 years, 5 months ago

But how can that be if there is no contact from the defenders? If he hadn't jump, this would be a different story...

        1. Ramboros
          • 12 Years
          6 years, 5 months ago

First of all there clearly is contact from the boot of the attacker to the leg of the left defender.

Second of all contact is not the only thing to determine whether it is foul.

          1. Sancidino
            • 7 Years

That touch is like a whisper of the wind, I reckon that if he had not jump it would be a pen, but he made the decision to go on...

He'd have to be retrospectively banned for it in this country, it's the same as Lanzini, you have to accept the contact and then go down (Like Hazard at Arsenal), their are too many camera's around to just fall down without the contact.

He jumps and gives up rather than pretends there's contact. Since the attempted tackle doesnt touch the ball but impedes him its a direct free kick, rather than obstruction. So its a penalty.

      1. Captain Roberto
        • 6 Years
        6 years, 5 months ago

If those two defenders got close but then pulled their legs back away and we went down then it would be a dive. But because by jumping their late attempts he loses the ball its s foul.

At least Refs seem to be cottoning on the the "leg fishing" Vardy style dive that creates contact.

Some players are just exceptional creates though so its impossible for Refs to not get conned if they are to take players at face value.

    What’s everyone doing with Calvert-Lewin?

    Going premium with Aguero?

Upgrading to the likes of Rooney, Vardy or Firmino?

Paying a little bit more for Wilson?

Or maybe downgrading to Crouch or Quaner and putting funds elsewhere?

Not sure where to go, his ownership is fairly high in the FPL community so it’ll be interesting to see what people’s plans are.

    Question

If played to good effect, (yeah, that's a big if!) what value would you give each of the chips? (in gained points)

    A. Wildcard
    B. Free hit
    C. Bench boost
    D. Triple captain

To put it another way, what's a satisfactory result from each?

20 points extra from the free hit this week.

I'm happy. But it could have been a lot more even with one Kane (c) goal...

I did Cout / Mariappa to Lingard / Alonso last night.

Cout needs to go as he's falling and will continue to, no?

Coutinho won’t play for Liverpool again imo.

Is Salah/Firmino the only Liverpool attack worth having?

    Thoughts on Lallana/Mané?

I'd like to get Aguero but can't afford him. Thus, I'll look for a cheaper FW.

BTW, my team's linked: ID 76467.

Tonight in FA Cup both Lallana and Mané looked off the pace.

Mané is by far the more potent goal threat though. When you think he looks match sharp get him in.

But to answer your question, probably Foster? But he won't, will be hart

I'd take Hart and play him. He's already damaged and it would be unfair to put others through the career ending misery of keeping goal for England at a major tournament.

    Salah, Sterling, Son, Arnautovic, Richarlison
    Kane, Morata (DCL)

    1FT, 0.4 in bank

Save FT this week? Have got a WC team planned, but players I plan to take out have decent fixtures this week.

A work rival who is ahead of me didn't realise that the free hit is for one week only. He didn't realise it reverts back. How am I losing to these people?

    I'm sh*t that's why
