More Man City injuries as World Cup stars return to training

Manchester City picked up some more injuries in their final match of pre-season but have been boosted by the return to training of some of their World Cup stars.

Elsewhere, Everton are struggling to live up to their attacking potential as they tasted defeat once again while Claude Puel complicated matters by making a large number of substitutions as Leicester lost to Udinese.

In another Scout Notes article we assess what the goals, assists and Fantasy talking points from the weekend mean for our Fantasy Premier League teams.

STADE RENNAIS 4-1 EVERTON

  • Goals: Richarlison (£6.5m)
  • Assists: Gylfi Sigurdsson (£7.5m)

Another pre-season defeat for Everton may well discourage the Fantasy interest that been building around their squad for the last few weeks. While only Crystal Palace rank higher for attack potential over the first six Gameweeks, the Toffees have now found the net just twice in five pre-season fixtures since their 22-0 win over ATV Irdning – a fixture it is hard to take seriously.

Cenk Tosun (£7.0m) currently has 9.7 percent ownership but is yet to score outside of that freak result in Austria, and both Zaha and Arnautovic are showing stronger form at the same price point. The Turkish international did have the ball in the net in this recent friendly but was penalised for jumping on the defender. Richarlison (£6.5m) was the man who played the ball to him, and he proved the only positive in a disappointing match. It was him who scored the solitary Everton goal on his full debut for the club, where he was the most creative player.

The Everton midfield was never going to be at its best as Gylfi Sigurdsson (£7.5m) and Idrissa Gueye (£5.0m) were making their first starts of the summer, although this was perhaps the most disappointing pre-season defeat so far. The loss at Blackburn could, in part, be blamed on a swathe of substitutions in the second-half disrupting the flow. This home defeat to Stade Rennais featured a line-up close to first-choice for 75 minutes. According to local press, Everton were vulnerable to the counter-attack and were weak in midfield.

It does appear that Everton could be harder to trust with their early season fixtures than we initially thought. New signings at full-back and centre-back are now reportedly probable with Michael Keane (£5.0m) and Phil Jagielka (£4.5m) the current first-choice but struggling to perform well.

Jordan Pickford (£5.0m), Theo Walcott (£6.5m) and Ademola Lookman (£5.5m) will all eventually boost the squad with their presence, but it is still unknown when any of them will be able to make their first competitive appearance. It was revealed after Saturday’s match that Pickford will miss the final meeting of pre-season, Valencia’s visit to Goodison Park on Saturday August 4, as a result of his compulsory three-week break following the World Cup. However, the Liverpool Echo reports that he has “been on an individual fitness plan to ensure he is ready for the season opener on August 11 against Wolves.”

EVERTON XI (4-2-3-1): Stekelenburg; Baines, Keane, Jagielka, Coleman; Gueye (Davies 75’), Schneiderlin; Richarlison, Sigurdsson, Sandro (Mirallas 75’); Tosun (Niasse 75’).

LEICESTER CITY 1-2 UDINESE

  • Goals: Kelechi Iheanacho (£6.0m)
  • Assists: Ricardo Pereira (£5.0m)

It was difficult to learn much from this latest Leicester City fixture as manager Claude Puel rang the changes in a big way. Four players who came on as substitutes were replaced roughly shortly after and nine members of the match squad registered no more than 30 minutes.

FPL midfielder Demarai Gray (£5.5m), who has been used as a forward in recent matches was not involved this time around as Puel handed time to five players returning from World Cup leave. Adrien Silva (£5.0m) was the only one to start the match but Ahmed Musa, Wilfried Ndidi (£5.0m), Yohan Benalouane (£4.0m) and Kelechi Iheanacho (£6.0m) were all involved, the latter getting a late consolation goal. There was also a first appearance in Leicester colours for full-back Ricardo Pereira (£5.0m), who got the assist on Iheanacho’s goal. Of those now back in training the only one not to feature at all was Kasper Schmeichel (£5.0m).

After two matches alongside each other, Wes Morgan (£4.5m) and Jonny Evans (£5.0m) were split up in this one the latter coming on at half-time. By all accounts, neither one of them played particularly well and one of them is expected to drop out when Harry Maguire (£5.5m) returns to the squad, although he may not be able to start in Gameweek 1. He and Jamie Vardy (£9.0m) are expected back in training next week and it appears that their presence in the squad is sorely needed.

LEICESTER CITY XI (4-2-3-1): Ward (Jakupovic 45’); Fuchs (Pereira 60’), Morgan (Evans 45’ | Benalouane 60’), Johnson (Elder 83’), Amartey (Simpson 60’); Iborra (Musa 60’), Choudhury (Ndidi 60’); Albrighton (Chilwell 30’), Silva (King 30’ | Mendy 60’), Diabate (Maddison 60’); Ulloa (Slimani 30’ | Iheanacho 60’).

BAYERN MUNICH 2-3 MANCHESTER CITY

  • Goals: Bernardo Silva x2 (£7.5m), Lukas Nmecha
  • Assists: Phil Foden (£5.0m), Adrián Bernabé

Riyad Mahrez (£9.0m) is still expected to be available for Sunday’s Community Shield despite being withdrawn with an ankle injury in Manchester City’s 3-2 win over Bayern Munich on Saturday. He was pictured in a support boot and on crutches after the match but there was more positive news on Monday.

“Riyad Mahrez has been given the all-clear to return to training later this week after picking up an ankle knock. A scan today has revealed no significant damage, and he could be available for selection for this weekend’s Community Shield against Chelsea.”

Aymeric Laporte (£5.5m) and Phil Foden (£5.0m) were also forced off the pitch with the latter nursing “what appeared to be a tweaked hamstring”, according to the club’s website. There has been no update on either of them since then.

Bernardo Silva (£7.5m) was the standout star in the match as he looks to make his case to start in Gameweek 1. He secured a brace after coming on for Mahrez, making him the most involved player in goal-scoring during City’s pre-season campaign.

Leroy Sané (£9.5m) didn’t feature, meaning he is yet to start a pre-season match and has registered just 62 minutes so far this summer – surprising, considering the large number of first-team players absent because of the World Cup. Guardiola reiterated again that there is no injury in his case and that he is still working on his fitness ahead of the Community Shield.

However, the entire squad was handed a boost on Monday afternoon as a large number of World Cup players were pictured training again. That included Gabriel Jesus (£10.5m), Sergio Aguero (£11.0m), Nicolas Otamendi (£6.5m), David Silva (£8.5m), Fernandinho (£5.5m), Ilkay Gundogan (£5.5m), John Stones (£5.5m), Vincent Kompany (£5.5m), Ederson (£5.5m) and Fabian Delph (£5.5m). How match fit these players will be, considering they have missed all the pre-season friendlies, is not known. Their returns could mean appearances in the Community Shield and maybe even Gameweek 1, although it is too early to tell. If that is the case though, it could potentially change the way a lot of managers set up their teams – although we will have to track Pep Guardiola’s press conferences between now and the start of the season for more information.

MANCHESTER CITY XI (5-1-3-1): Bravo; Zinchenko, Laporte (Harrison 67′), Garcia, Humphreys, Bolton (Bernabé); Douglas Luiz; Diaz (Gomes 67′), Foden (Garre 85′), Mahrez (B Silva 28′); Nmecha.

10.5 to spend on two defenders and it’s changed so many times. I’d like a spurs or Chelsea def but don’t feel confident in any particular one.

Either Bournemouth or Huddersfield, depending on which one has the worst injury list over the season.

Most of the really bad teams that had been circling over the trapdoor for the last few seasons (Villa, Sunderland, West Brom) have all gone now, so there aren’t really any perennial relegation battlers that survive on the last day left anymore.

Team is solid for the most part.
You won't need Fabianski with a set-and-forget keeper, though I prefer Ederson over De Gea.
Doing this grants you an extra 1m which you could use to upgrade Cedric to a Burnley defender and switch Steve Cook to Tomkins.
You could then save the 0.5m remaining to upgrade Sane to De Bruyne in the near future.

“Downgrade” Tosun to Wood or King, Bailly (Man Utd are defensively in crisis) to Perreira. Upgrade one of your Palace defs because despite their favourable start you’re not going to play them both so you’re limiting you’re potential from a 15 man squad to a 13 or 14 before the game even kicks off

Bailly is surely nailed for the opening weeks.

As for Luiz, if we starts on Sunday in the Com Shield we can assume he's more or less nailed.

        I've got both!

I think my squad formation below ensures I will finish in the top 1% of players on FPL. Balance throughout the squad. What do you think?

    Fabianski

    Alonso-Otamendi-Bellerin-Azpilicueta

    Gross-Eriksen-Salah-De Bruyne

    Zaha-Arnautovic

Three reasons why I am comfortable with the lack of a premium striker:

        1. Zaha and Arnautovic benefit from the switch of their position from the wings towards the center late last season. Since then they have produced big points for their respectively clubs. They are considered strikers this season as a result

        2. The premium wing-backs / full-backs such as Azpilicueta, Otamendi, Bellerin, and Alonso more than make up the difference in points production. In particular, Azpilicueta and Alonso scored as many points as top 5 strikers last season and they only cost 6.5m! Talk about getting more bang for the buck...

        3. I invest heavily in the midfield with 3 of the top 4 players from last season: Salah, KDB, and Eriksen. These three scored more points than any striker except Harry Kane (Salah scored the most of anyone as we know!). In addition, Gross scored a lot of points, similar to a top striker as well, but only cost 7.0m which is a huge bargain.

          All fair points.

Just beware that last season was then and this is now. Midfielders converted into strikers will get different points including different calculations for BPS.

They can also end up playing back in midfield with a change of manager or a new striker.

Can't argue with the tried and trusted midfield, but want to see a bit of Chelsea and Arsenal to know what's happening with their defence. Bellerin was distinctly average last season, and I don't know if Alonso will have the same role this time. He isn't actually a very good defender.

Not sure that I'd want to start the season with a 7m Brighton player with two of their opening three fixtures being Man Utd and Liverpool, KDB will also likely miss the start of the season.

I'd prefer to have more money invested in the forwards as it'll make transfers easier if someone hits form, as is you'll likely need to take a hit to switch it around. (Granted hits aren't the end of the world.)

Fair points. However, keep in mind that with the same lineup last year, I would have scored 1,940 points (without factoring in any captaincy effect). The quality throughout the squad is undeniable. 3 of the top 4 defenders from last season. 3 of the top 4 midfielders from last season as well. Top 3 goalkeeper (and the highest point per pound player of them all) from last season. Two of the top bargain strikers today (look at the scoring record in the preseason for both Zaha and Arnautovic). My whole team is ready to hit the ground running from Week 1! Talk about overwhelming quality throughout the squad!

Even if you had auto capped Salah last season (1940 + 300 = 2240), that team wouldn't have been good enough for the top 1% so I can't see how you can guarantee it now. (I finished outside of the top 1% last season with a score of 2259).

Andy - you also forgot to include a whole host of other tools to boost points:

            1. Triple Captain
            2. Wild Card x 2
            3. Bench Boost
            4. Free Hit

With these tools factored in, I have no doubt I would end up in the top 1%!

I have a different strategy. My starting 11 is the best that money can buy. I don't need the bench except for when I use bench boost which would accompany a wild card!

I challenge anyone to put forth a stronger starting 11.

The quality throughout the squad is undeniable. 3 of the top 4 defenders from last season. 3 of the top 4 midfielders from last season as well. Top 3 goalkeeper (and the highest point per pound player of them all) from last season. This will 100% crash and burn. The first few weeks always throw up a fair few curveballs so you need subs. This may be the strongest starting 11 (it's not because your strikers are Arnie & Zaha but for arguments sake lets pretend it it) but if you don't have any subs, you won't be near the top 1% as you hoped.
Pre season means next to nothing and you expect success just they did well last season. GroB is outrageously overpriced and you're strikers won't get 25 goals between them

I sense bias in your "prediction". Just because my strategy is different than the "conventional wisdom" and your own biased strategy, you shoot down my strategy.

Zaha and Arnautovic benefitted greatly in general from being the central strikers in their respective team. Last season they played the majority of the time on the wings before the late season switch. They are in great scoring form heading into the season. Meanwhile a lot of the so called premium strikers are not even back yet from vacation! (i.e., Harry Kane, Firmino, Aguero).

I more than protect my downside with the best and PROVEN midfielders and wing-backs that money can buy. 3 of the top 4 midfielders from last season and regular starters for their top 6 teams (they scored more points than ANY striker except Harry Kane)! 3 top scoring wing-backs, not just last season, but for several seasons running! Top 3 goalkeeper (and the highest point scorer per pound last season of ANY player of any position)!

This team screams of quality and top bargain from every position! Balance squad wins period!

I fully admit bias on not rating Zaha and Arnie, that is just personal preference and I could easily be proven wrong although once you factor in that they now get 1 less point per goal and no clean sheets as a result of reclassification which actually leaves Zaha on less points than Ayoze Perez, I would be surprised if I am wrong on that one
Quick sidepoint but Aguero is very much back from vacation and will start GW1 due to lack of alternatives up top for City

Your players may have done well last season and whilst that can be a good indicator, it is not a guarantee of success this season. GroB will have a huge downturn in points, your strikers are poor and as much as you bang on about wingbacks, Chelsea now play a back 4 and do Arsenal so you have 3 full backs and a centre back who will be dropped this season for Kompany, Laporte and Stones who are all superior defenders

You can bang on about the quality of the starting 11 as much as you want but so many years of fantasy have proven that having poor subs doesn't work. If you stick to this strategy of only having 11 players, I would bet absolutely anything that you won't come top 1%

I think you are mistaken in your understanding of my post. No where did I say I will not make adjustments as the season goes on. There is one free substitution each week as we all know along with all of the extra tools like wild card (x2), bench boost, free hit, and triple captain as well. All I am saying is this is the best starting 11 that I feel comfortable with as the core group from Gameweek 1 and will help me achieve 1% percentile among players.

Last season was my first one playing FPL. I ended up in the top 10%. I learned a lot of valuable lessons. One of them is that a balance squad wins the day. Can't sacrifice and put all your chips in any individual team segment (i.e., forward, midfielder, defender, goalkeeper). And a strong and free scoring midfield is required to win!

Just beware it gets a lot harder the higher you go. You have to adapt and one plan rarely lasts the whole season.

Many people on here will have finished in the top 0.1%, but don't boast or make bold predictions at the start on how they are going to do. Some people don't like that.

Best of luck to you though- looks a strong team.

Thanks for the feedback. I have no doubt it will be tough to crack the top players echelon in FPL!

I have flexibility in how I make my switch between game weeks as well. For example, I can easily switch out KDB for Sane or Mahrez if the situation calls for it. Same thing with Gross and Mkhitaryan. I can also switch out one of the premium defenders for other similar ones such as John Stones, Antonio Valencia (when he is injury free), Harry Maguire etc.

Of course I will be patient and would not waste money on making too many switches that would cost me money!

As the small print often says, past performance isn't an indicator of future returns.

Otamendi is amongst 4 CBs at Man City. Alonso may now be playing in a back 4 or benched for Emerson. De Bruyne has been given an extended rest.

Fair point about past performance. But if past performances extended to two or three seasons then it has more meaning (e.g., Alonso or Azpilicueta were top defenders the past two seasons running). I have flexibility in switching KDB for Sane or Mahrez post Community Shield game.

You’re dreaming if you think Pep Guardiola would drop Otamendi (that is one of the coach’s favorite players).

I’m actually doing something similar. Key is to stick with it for the whole season though and not jump on expensive strikers after a brace one week (unless that striker is out scoring salah at a cheaper price in which case you get salah out for that player and captain him every week ). Good amount of luck necessary to finish so high but I agree with the strategy, good luck!

Ederson back in training makes him a no brainer till 1st wildcard imo.
Best fixtures by a mile and nailed.

I know there’s a case for a 4.5gk as they offer more value but that’s over the season. Looking at the first 8 fixtures only Ederson could be worth it.

Problem is I can't see him getting save points in any of those fixtures apart from arsenal.. rotating Foster and Fab saves 0.5 and even with just 3 cleanies they could outscore him with save points.

Don’t agree with a 4.0 keeper, none are going to play and again will just drop in value, 2X 4.5 makes sense until you WC and then look at what will make the most points.

A bad pick could cost you a drop of 0.1 which is the same as 0.5 in early season!

My biggest failing season in season out is always my captain choice.
Occasionally like a blind pig I will find a truffle every so often and strike it lucky but for the most part I make the wrong decisions when it comes to captain choice.
Any good advice or tips from people who get it right more often then not? Whats your strategy?

Just leave it on Salah. If Salah is away to Man City and you have Auba at home to Cardiff, maybe consider switching for the week, but if Salah is doing anything like he did last season, just leave the armband on him and give him all your trust!

I'm beginning to doubt United options. Seems to be a really crap atmosphere at United right now. The fans and some players aren't happy with Mourinho. Mourinho isn't happy about anything and he's now just 6/1 to be the first manager gone in the sack race.

That is only your perception of whats going but the reality is probably much different.

I am a United fan and am quite happy with Jose. How do you know that the players are unhappy with him anyway?

Jose has always played this game with the media by drawing all the attention on himself and detracting the media form the players.

Do not be fooled by gutter trash journalism, just look at Jose's stats as a manager the numbers speak for themselves.

He used to draw a lot of attention on himself to deflect from his players though there were many exceptions over the years to that, nowadays he throws them under the bus in far greater regularity. Pogba, Martial, Shaw, Rashford, Valencia, Jones, Smalling, his entire youth academy plus more in the last 12 months alone. Even by his standards he's turned sour

Very few managers in the league who aren't important than any individual player (tbh I can't think of a single player more important than their manager right now) so that's normal. He's moaning and looks like a rough start to the season ahead but the board seem understanding at the minute because they haven't delivered the signings he asked for. Once they start winning a few games I'm sure he'll cheer up a bit

    Fab
    Robbo / Mendy / Sakho / Kola
    Salah / Sanchez / Sane / Neves
    Kun / Arnie....

    4.0 / Ward / WanB / Quaner

    0.5 ITB

Sane becomes KDB with the 0.5 and Sanchez becomes Hazard, assuming he stays. I'm wondering if skimming 0.5 from my defence and upgrading ward might add a touch more balance?
