Hazard blanks as Arnautovic misses out on West Ham draw with Chelsea

Sunday afternoon’s early kick-off yielded mostly frustration for Fantasy Premier League managers.

Eden Hazard and his Chelsea team-mates drew a blank against West Ham while Marko Arnautovic didn’t even play.

Furthermore, there was another big Lukasz Fabianski haul that looks set to be consigned to many of his owners’ benches.

We’ve gone over the key talking points in this latest Scout Notes article.

West Ham 0-0 Chelsea

Goals: None

Assists: None

Eden Hazard (£10.9m) blanked for the first time this season as Chelsea were held to a frustrating 0-0 draw by London rivals West Ham. That was a huge disappointment to the 619,636 Fantasy managers who signed him for Gameweek 6 on the back of last week’s hat-trick. In the end, he was the only one out of Mohamed Salah (£13.0m) and Sergio Aguero (£11.4m) not to return points. Up next, league leaders Liverpool visit Stamford Bridge.

At the London Stadium on Sunday afternoon, Hazard registered half as many shots compared to his three-goal performance against Cardiff, perhaps the biggest reason for his underperformance Fantasy-wise. Not surprisingly, West Ham proved a much sterner test than the newly-promoted side from south Wales. But Hazard actually enjoyed double the number of penalty area touches recorded in Gameweek 5 during his outing at West Ham. Furthermore, he managed a similar number of successful passes in the final third too (one more than last week). At the very least, this first blank of the campaign for Hazard confirms that he definitely overperformed in that 4-1 win over Cardiff.

Maurizio Sarri believes that Hazard did not have as much of an impact as possible at West Ham because of his positioning. The former Napoli manager claimed a week ago that Hazard needed to spend less time dropping deep. Asked if he saw any improvement in that area on Sunday he said:

“Not in the first half, but better in the second. Today it was difficult to play today. They were cutting every pass to Giroud. It was really very difficult for the strikers and wingers.” – Maurizio Sarri

Despite not finding the net, Chelsea dominated both possession and the shot count at West Ham. They spent 71% of the match with the ball and nearly tripled the Hammers’ number of efforts on goal (17 to 6). However, it might be less of a surprise to see Chelsea fail to make all of that count to those who have watched all their matches so far this season. Local press reported on Thursday night that Chelsea were not as clinical as they could have been in their Europa League win over PAOK, not for the first time in 2018/19. In fact, they even suggested the time might come when Chelsea dominated a match and failed to win it. That is exactly what happened at the London Stadium on Sunday.

The same reporters also warned that Chelsea’s performance levels against West Ham might have been put at risk by so many first-team players starting in Greece. Asked if his team selection against PAOK and the introduction of the Europa League into the schedule affected Chelsea’s play, Sarri did not rule it out.

“I don’t know. I don’t think so. In this period I don’t think so. After seven matches it is difficult in March and April, not now. I don’t know why in England with the match away you can’t ask for a Monday night. In Italy it is normal.” – Maurizio Sarri

The Chelsea centre-forward position remains an unsettled position after Sunday’s draw. Olivier Giroud (£7.8m) started against West Ham and was joint-top in the match for shots on goal, but was withdrawn just after the hour-mark. Álvaro Morata (£9.0m) nearly made an instant impact in replacing the Frenchman but had a good chance well-saved by Lukasz Fabianski (£4.5m).

Antonio Rüdiger (£6.0m) was forced off through injury in the second half. Gary Cahill (£5.2m) replaced him for the final 21 minutes and could start Gameweek 7 if the German does not win the race to be fit. Sarri is not too concerned about his knock though.

“I want to speak with the doctor. I think nothing serious. Maybe three or four days.” – Maurizio Sarri

Pedro (£6.7m) missed out on Gameweek 6 after injuring his shoulder in the Europa League. However, Sarri provided a positive update on the player in his post-match press conference.

“He is very important for us as he is the best player with movement without the ball. We are hoping to have him back by the end of the week.” – Maurizio Sarri

Meanwhile, Mateo Kovacic (£6.0m) recovered from the dead leg which forced him off against Cardiff, Cesc Fabregas (£6.3m) returned to the bench and Ruben Loftus-Cheek (£5.3m) missed out on the matchday squad entirely.

Chelsea now prepare for a League Cup match with Liverpool at Anfield on Wednesday night. Sarri is currently uncertain of his team selection though.

“They have had one more day of rest. I want to see the picture of the situation tomorrow morning in the training session. I don’t know, maybe I will change 11, maybe 5.” – Maurizio Sarri

The leading Fantasy story from a West Ham perspective was that Marko Arnautovic (£7.0m) was not passed fit. He was withdrawn with an injury in Gameweek 5 and could not recover in time for Gameweek 6. Manager Manuel Pellegrini did not give any timeframe on Arnautovic’s return, nor on Javier Hernandez (£6.3m) who missed out through illness. Michail Antonio (£6.8m) led the line for 65 minutes before Lucas Pérez (£6.3m) replaced him.

“Marko tried in the last minute to see if he was 100 per cent fit. He just worked yesterday a little bit on set pieces and he felt uncomfortable, and this morning he couldn’t run. So he tried, but he could not make it.” – Manuel Pellegrini

Fabianski proved to be the highest-scorer in Sunday’s match, continuing the trend of saving his best performances for the tough matches. A first clean sheet of the campaign, six saves and three bonus made for an 11-point haul. However, as is often the case, very few Fantasy managers are expected to benefit as he was benched by 564,795 for Gameweek 6.

West Ham had the best chance to win the game but could not take it. Substitute Robert Snodgrass (£5.4m) found an unmarked Andriy Yarmolenko (£6.8m), who scored twice last week, at the far post, but the Ukrainian headed wide.

West Ham XI (4-3-3): Fabianski; Masuaku, Diop, Balbuena, Zabaleta; Rice, Obiang, Noble (Sánchez 85′); Anderson (Snodgrass 75′), Antonio (Pérez 65′), Yarmolenko.

Chelsea XI (4-3-3): Kepa; Alonso, Rüdiger (Cahill 69′), David Luiz, Azpilicueta; Kovacic (Barkley 79′), Kanté, Jorginho; Hazard, Giroud (Morata 65′), Willian.

van Aanholt is now a genuine problem. Reluctant to double up Palace defence so playing him over AWB, who is absolutely killing him on bonus.

Had the exact same. Sold him last night for Trippier, but if I couldn't afford him I probably would have dropped him to Doherty or similar.

Hasn't been proving his value at all, and I need some variation in my backline so I will play AWB!

Yeah - those are the two I'm eyeing up - I can also afford Mendy once he's back so I could wait...

Feel like Trips will miss one of the next two in the league around Barca game so Doherty is staring me in the face - just the old mindset thing of not wanting to make a transfer the week after WC!

Leaning towards a reluctant hold, but expect him to drop to 5.4 before I sell.

I still have him, but don't have AWB. Would like to do PVA-AWB, but with only 1 FT don't see the point this week - can't spend the money; not likely to get a CS away to BOU anyway and still think PVA has the edge for attacking returns? Will probably hold this week and move him on with 2FT next week; depends a bit on Mendy news as well, though.

Fair enough - think you're right on Bournemouth possibly being a good game for him so fairly certain I'll hold this week.

Was probably going to get rid around GW9/10 anyway so probably even worth keeping him for Wolves - those wing-backs have got to leave spaces somewhere!

Just frustrating really to have mini league rivals + wider ff community all benefiting from AWB's points when the most expensive option in that defence isn't justifying it.

yup, I know it's rash (both cause it's been made so early in the week, plus auba seems to be finding his footing) but I've watched auba last few weeks and stuck out wide he looks lost - he's really detached from the game and has been lucky to bag the goals he has.

        - richarlison just looked sublime last night and against that fulham defence could cause genuine problems

        - mendy too much uncertainty - and doherty was the enabler for harry - but he does have great fixtures and wolves look defensively resolute - AND doherty looks very attacking

The talking point should be strategy not player based. Maybe discuss all the things that people believe are true about FPL but actually aren't.

That's fair but wouldn't suit a 'weekly' scoutcast, would it? They could talk about that in one episode and then it's done. What about next week? In a weekly scoutcast, when they're focusing on just the very next week, there's always something new to talk about.

I think there are a lot of badly misunderstood and just plain wrong concepts in FPL. If you look at other luck management games such as backgammon and poker you will see that what we thought is true and the correct way to play the game has changed time and time again. It would be remarkable if FPL was any different.

Player has to be Salah. Two difficult fixtures, for those with a wc still to play shall we take a couple of weeks punt on someone else and then get him back when fixtures improve ( sterling home to Brighton looks tasty ) thanks

Redondant, they talked a lot about Salah in the previous weeks.

I feel like Kane could bring a good discussion, can he justify his pricetag and people restructering just for him and his good run of fixtures ?

Some mention of Knockaert will be great as there are few £5m mids performing and amazing fixtures coming for Brighton.

      2. Pacer.
        • 9 Years
        5 years, 8 months ago

I agree. I don't think you can ignore Salah because it's such a difficult decision right now. This is a player who has looked off form but on current form is STILL heading for a 250 point season. We are really not looking at a big swing for him to be that 300 point player everyone was investing in.

And it doesn't matter that this discussion is happening weekly because his value is relative to the value of others.

The particular question this week is whether its worth replacing Salah, who's not delivering the full package and has two tough fixtures, to bring in Kane for his great fixtures even though he's not showing the form yet? Tempting for those on WC, and possibly still worth it for a hit. Or is it?

Man U players - Lukaku, Pogba, Shaw, (maybe DDG)

Draw at home to Wolves has taken the shine off but they had been gaining interest leading upto GW6. Do you think they still deserve interest going into GW7 or avoid?

      1. Kane (fixtures but poor form - hud and CAR seem perfect for him to come back in style) / Trippier (rotation risk worth it?) and Lacazette / Ramsey (value and threat)
      2. Tottenham and Arsenal, poor and good form
      3. Would Kane for next two then swap back for Salah (if on WC)?
      - Doherty with Alonso potential?
      - Burnley back to their old ways in def?
      - Newcastle fixture turn soon?
      - Maddison not lucky anymore
      - Pogba promising stats

Has Emery found his attacking formula for Arsenal, and does this therefore made Lacazette a great attacking option?

Now Richarlison is back from suspension, is he really that great? Do the stats back him up? I held on way too long last season during the 50+ shots with no goals, has anything changed?

Next gameweek is Livepool vs Chelsea. I have 3 Chelsea and 2 Liverpool players. How big a worry is a fixture like this? Should I be looking to reduce exposure to it?

Yeah I think big teams playing each other is something to talk about. liverpool v chelsea, followed by liverpool v city is interesting when the majority of teams on here have between 4 and 6 going up against each other next 2 gameweeks. Ties in with the, 'is time to turn to spurs' discussion, as they have much easier fixtures.

Brighton source of magic beans with fixture swing week after week 8- thinking Anthony Knockaert in particular who has looked very threatening

Will normal service be resumed at Burnley post Europa exit - thinking Lennon at 5 m offers good value and Tarkowski in defence worth considering for goal threat as well clean sheets

      Player:
      - Mendy (keep or sell)
      - Kane (is he worth that much as 7.0 ones can do the business)
      - Richarlison (is he a real deal and we need him back ASAP with Ful next)

      Team:
      - Spurs (do we really need their players as the doesn't look great imo so are those fix enough to get em)
      - Arsenal (similar situation)

      Talking point:
      - Salah! Even with those fix is he worth keepeing? He look really good imo. He was unlucky last game as should score 3 more: blocked shot in last second, back foot shoot missed by inches and offside.

-Is Lacazette too much for 9.4 with Arnatauvic and Mitrovic providing excellent value?
-Is Fabianski a good option for set and forget even with bad fixtures? He is always in the save points.

Richarlison - is he worth getting straight back in for those of us who swapped to Maddison/Fraser. He was on form before getting suspended but Maddison/Fraser have a run of good fixtures.

Burnley - would you consider any Burnley assets now they're out of Europa League, if so which ones.

Talking point - Mendy. Pep has given very vague answers when questioned about his injury. These answers have changed from his knee being the problem, then his ankle, then his foot.
Is there something more to this than we are are being told or are we overthinking it.

I know he's discussed a lot but Salah really is the question because getting the one goal makes it awkward for me. A blank and he'd be out. 2-3 goals he'd be kept in no question. But one... Chelsea are weak defensively so I wouldn't be surprised to see him score. I wouldn't take him out on a WC because unless banking cash, he's just so difficult to get back after the tough run and we will want him. As a straight swap, who in their right mind would bring in Hazard. And that's really it for the premium midfielders. Or are we ready to believe in Spurs and Eriksen?

Player: Harry Kane. Huddersfield and Cardiff are 2 awful, awful teams. Is back to back hatricks on the cards for Sir Harold?

Team: Man City. Just like last season, City are miles ahead on all the key attacking metrics like xG and BCC. What is the best approach to get in on this action?

Talking point. Ultra cheap Defenders. With Wolves defenders and Wan Bissaka performing so well, do we need to alter our formations and flush cash out of defence?

Nice Talking point. My WC defence for GW6 took this into account, as I went for: Alonso, Yedlin, Wan-Bissaka, (Jonny, Doherty). If these players prove to be as valuable as I'm hoping, I feel like it's the smart move to make, if not long-term, then at least until Mendy's back and/or Liverpool's fixtures turn again.

      Brighton and their players.

They have a great run of fixtures from gw8 to 16.

Knockaert has a goal and 3 assists already, and he’s left a rough year- and last season behind him according to reports. Murray with 4 goals and Duffy who looks like a serious threat in the opponents box.

And what about Groß and Izquierdo? What should we expect from them? Is Andone a potential budget option for our front threes?

Team: Have Burnley turned a corner - ready to compete for the top half of the table again? Sitting fifth for shots in the box in GW6, are any of their attacking assets worth looking at with Cardiff and Huddersfield up next?

Player: Is Gudmundsson the next Fraser? He had 2 assists in versus Bournemouth, but could we also expect an increased goal output, too, compared to last season? (see: https://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2018/08/08/class-is-temporary-the-underachievers/)

Talking Point - Targeting the rubbish teams

To me it is clear there are two teams who are awful (sorry Cardiff and Huddersfield fans)

Over the next six games, the following teams play both of them:

      Burnley
      Tottenham
      Liverpool
      Fulham

Should we be targeting players and captaincy options from teams who play them? Spurs and Burnley play both then switch around which looks like the best odds of clean sheets and goals all season. Mitrovic should fill his boots for Fulham. Could this be Kane's fixtures making form, or could it be like Hull and Burnley last season?

      2) With Bournemouth and Palace's fixtures about to turn, which teams should we be looking at for bargain replacements?

      Harry Kane

With a plum tie coming up against Cardiff when Pool play City is it viable (assuming you have the cash as i do) to do an Aguero - Kane Hokey Cokey in weeks 8 & 9 to get next three captains as:

      Aguero - Brighton Home
      Kane - Cardiff Home
      Aguero - Burnley Home

Player(s) - Obvious picks this week seem to be:
Kane (fixtures>form? Is his form showing signs of being back?),
      Aguero (minutes managed),
Richarlison (he's back, but is he worth getting? Is he really providing that much value compared to Maddison, Fraser - even if you moved to Walcott is it that worth switching back considering all the underlying stats?
Mitrovic (incredible value, is he a season keeper?)

Team(s) - Burnley and Spurs. They're the 2 who seem like there's most to discuss, particularly with both of them about to face Hudd/Cardiff. Maybe Burnley if you discuss Kane as the player, as Burnley have options up and down the pitch, whilst Spurs would mainly be focused on the Kane debate.

Talking Point - big fixture clashes and what to do. Chelsea v Liverpool, and Liverpool v City coming up. Many people have 2 or 3 from both sides each week. Bench the defenders? Move to Spurs or somebody else for short term? I remember didn't Az do the 'hokey-cokey' with Aguero -> Lukaku and back again last year, how did that turn out? People are discussing doing Salah->Kane-> Salah thing, but that requires 2 transfers, is that is a bit far, would it force you to play your wildcard?

Last season Salah's value went from 9m to 10.6m an increase of 1.6m, however when players are not performing well their value hardly goes down. Is it time for a different algorithm to be used perhaps more so for expensive players like Kane who seems priced out the market right now.

I'm sorry but you have to lose this idea that because a result occurred last season, that one single game with a whole bunch of different variables suggests it will happen again. For one, I think Hodgson had literally just taken over and was one of his first games post the firing of Frank De Boer, he was still in the process of setting the team up. I think Palace had Speroni in goal because the first choice was injured. And by this rationale, Liverpool should have conceded a load of goals vs Spurs a couple of weeks back because they lost 4-1 last season. Are City going to beat Liverpool 5-0 again at the Etihad because that's what happened last season?

            Nice!

Sad that Auba is on the wing, could have been gold on center.

Had him since the start. Think I'll probably get rid when I wildcard around GW9 or 10

Paul Pogba: "We are at home and we should play much better against Wolves. We are here to attack, I think teams are scared when they see Manchester United attacking and attacking. That was our mistake. Maybe the attitude should be better and we should play better because, again, we are at Old Trafford and we should just attack".

He is absolutely spot on. I think it's fair to say everyone used to dread going to Old Trafford - you'd always be in for a tough 90 minutes and end up losing on most occasions.

Obviously there was going to be a drop off in the league since Ferguson retired but I don't think many envisaged the style of play to be this pragmatic for so many years.

With the financial backing and the players they have at their disposal, United should be playing a brand of football they're known for.

Owners change, managers change and players change, but the ethos of a club should never change.

Mendy to Doherty for a -4 hit? Or ride the price loss and hold on?

Current Def is Mendy, Alonso, Bellerin, AWB and Bennett

I have very similar defence and 2 FTs. Will probably just play Jonny/AWB, as they have great fixtures until GW11.

Yea seems a little bit of a waste of 4 points taking the hit. However, if Mendy is out for 3-4 weeks and is about to drop SV then it could be worth it? Hard to tell right now...

If we get a timeline for his return, maybe. But assuming you bought him for 6.0, he probably won't drop more than to 6.2 this week. Effectively 0.1 drop in SV. I doubt it is worth -4.

    Team atm -

    Patricio - Hamer
    Alonso - Trippier - Bennett - AWB - Schelotto
    Sterling - Hazard - Fraser - Ward - Schneiderlin
    Aguero - Lukaku - Vardy

    1 FT and 0.3m itb.

Hazard ➡ Richarlison this gw? Lets me do Aguero ➡ Kane in GW 8 and Sterling ➡ Salah in GW 9.

    Thoughts? 🙂

Planning transfers like that is always risky - especially given that there's actually four weeks until GW9 - so much can change.

Downgrade Trippier and upgrade another defender. Maybe TAA and swap Duffy for a Burnley defender? Spurs are conceding ridiculous goals atm

    Hi,

Would you go Hojbjerg & Lukaku -> Richarlison & Ings (-4)? Would leave enough spare to get Salah in for Mane week after. Current Team:

    Patricio
    Alonso, Laporte, TAA
    Hazard, Mane, Fraser, Maddison
    Aguero, Mitrovic, Lukaku

    (Hennessey, AWB, Doherty, Hojbjerg)

    Cheers
