Pro Pundits - Tom

Why researching the newly promoted clubs can give FPL managers an early edge

One of the world’s best FPL managers, Tom Freeman (aka avfc82), is back with his first column of 2020/21. Tom looks at lessons learned from last season, Chelsea’s exciting options and the newly promoted clubs.

With the Premier League full fixture schedule set to be released no later than Friday, it’s time to get those notepads out and start planning.

I’ve got to admit, I’m looking forward to getting back into a more familiar routine in terms of Gameweek deadlines. The relentless nature of Project Restart meant it was hard to keep pace and it’s fair to say that it didn’t suit my playing style at all. There was no time to think, and for those of you who have watched my ‘Meet the Manager’ video, you’ll know how much I value time.

So, how did the 2019/20 season end?

Well, it wasn’t a bad campaign at all, but was somewhat short of where I want to be, finishing with an overall rank of 16,668 – 17 points off my top 10k target.

Why did I fail? Having run a bit of analysis over the last week, I keep coming back to one thing. No, it wasn’t owning Theo Walcott (£6.0m) for three Gameweeks back in November (!), it was chip strategy following the restart, which went like this:

Gameweek 30+ – Free Hit
Gameweek 33+ – Wildcard
Gameweek 34+ – Bench Boost

Had I gone down the Gameweek 30+ Bench Boost route like many did, I’m pretty sure I’d be sat here with a ninth top 10k finish in the bag, but hey, that’s the way it goes sometimes.

I now sit 15th in the Career Hall of Fame, with my updated season history as follows:

Looking ahead to the new season, how good is it to see Mark Sutherns, a true legend of the game, back? With Lateriser and Zophar also offering insight on here, quite a team of contributors is being assembled. I’ll be back too, writing regular columns, plus Spot the Differential, with hopefully a few video appearances thrown in along the way.

As is usually the case during the off-season, Fantasy managers have a lot of time on their hands, and I’ve already seen quite a few strategy guides and threads popping up on social media; the kind of dos and don’ts of FPL. There is nothing wrong with it but to consistently achieve high ranks year in, year out, my advice would be don’t be too rigid and set in your ways – there is no rulebook. Be adaptable, be flexible and don’t be afraid to rip up plans at the last minute.

For sure, there are a few tried and trusted methods I try to stick to, like saving a free transfer whenever possible or holding onto my first Wildcard for as long as I can (early ones rarely work for me), but with one or two clubs possibly being given extra time off by the Premier League having reached the latter stages of European competition, these ideas may be completely redundant in a few weeks’ time – who knows what the new season will throw at us?

Another thing I touched upon in my ‘Meet the Manager’ video, was that it’s worth spending a bit of time now researching the newly promoted sides. Why? Well, you’ll find some solid, cheap picks, and possibly one or two misclassifications, like John Lundstram (£5.5m) and Keinan Davis (£4.5m) last season. Even if you don’t plan on starting with anyone from Leeds United, West Bromwich Albion or Fulham, get that knowledge in place now, so you’re ready to move quickly once the season kicks off.

I’ve also seen a couple of threads suggesting all of the above sides will be slow starters. It doesn’t matter – they can still deliver points, especially offensive players.

Aston Villa and Norwich City lost in Gameweek 1 last season, yet Teemu Pukki and John McGinn (£5.5m) still found the back of the net against Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur respectively. Then, in Gameweek 2, there was Lundstram and Pukki’s double-digit hauls, while Todd Cantwell and Jack Grealish (£7.0m) were also amongst the assists.

David and Neale’s recent articles are a good starting point, while Statsbomb, Stats Perform and All Stats Aren’t We have all written some really good stuff on Leeds.

It’s also worth listening to those in the community who watch their team’s week in, week out. There are plenty of good posters on the forum and on Twitter, so keep an eye on what they’re saying. I’m not saying blindly follow them (sometimes they get it wrong), but what you will get is a fan’s perspective on what is happening at a club, which can be useful.

In terms of transfers, it’s understandably been a bit of a slow window so far, but Chelsea’s new signings are firmly on my radar. Hakim Ziyech (£8.0m) is at a peak age to excel, while Timo Werner (£9.5m) could be a steal and should settle quickly, as most Bundesliga imports do. Add in Christian Pulisic (£8.5m), and this team is going to be a lot of fun next season. If they can resolve their issues at the back, I think they could turn out to be the best of the rest behind Manchester City and Liverpool.

Talking of City, Ferran Torres (£7.0m) probably isn’t going to be an option from the off but looks like a decent dribbler with plenty of potential. He’s been playing as a right midfielder in a 4-4-2 at Valencia, so it’ll be interesting to see how Pep Guardiola uses him, and how he adapts to a more possession-based system.

Tomas Soucek (£5.0m) and Nathan Ferguson (£4.0m) could be solid enablers too, but as is the case with everyone, fixtures will dictate whether or not they are genuine options.

Regarding motivation for the new season, I’ll leave this quote from ESPN reporter David Aldridge, which is taken from the superb Netflix documentary ‘The Last Dance’, and talks about ‘The Separator’ and Michael Jordan’s quest for three Championships in a row:

A lot of the people in that era, that you would consider Michael’s peers had won two in a row. Isiah had won two straight, Magic had won two straight… but, none of them had won three in a row. The third championship was the Separator. You win three and you’re on Mount Rushmore. So, for that team it was all about winning a third straight.

You can think of a sixth top 1k finish as my ‘Separator’ – let’s see if I can nail it.

Finally, there will be a lot of ‘noise’ out there over the next few weeks. All I’d say is don’t get too influenced by others, play your own game and most importantly, have some fun!

Thanks for reading…

They looked well faked if they were but was a bit odd seeing United and City both at home, not impossible mind.

Am i right to think Jimenez would be a better option than Martial this season as their are no European fixtures for Wolves to distract ?

United in all honesty don't look like signing a backup striker to Tony/Ighalo so he can see rotation.

Also Doherty Vinaigre Jimenez should not be case of worry as they are separate entities ... (Coverage ... Ahem ahem too much of it)

      In general !

Jimenez will likely tick along nicely with his 6-9 points and may end up getting more overall points.

Martial will likely haul in periods of the season scoring double digit hauls and then going on a run of no goals.

Jimenez is steady, Martial is explosive. I prefer the latter, provided you time it correctly.

If United don't sign a RW Greenwood also IN our teams which makes me lean towards Jimenez.

Jimenez is a great set and forget option and if I had to create a zombie/ghost team he would be one of the first names in it... but his returns, though consistent, are not exactly explosive and it just depends on what type of player you are...

Unpopular opinion but choosing 1 of Salah/Aubameyang/KDB really helps create more exciting team.

You can get Martial, Werner and Jimenez and then still have plenty of money for exciting picks in defence and midfield.

Yes, with no Euro ties, Jimenez could well play 38 games of 90 minutes this season. He'll plod along with a goal a game-and-a-half and end up with a very pleasing points tally. And he's never a temptation to captain, sparing you those errors of missing the obvious pick.

Genuinely believe Chelsea can have Man City levels of offensive production next year. Lampard's great at creating attacking systems and now he's adding a few incredible players to his team. The entire offense looks underpriced! Werner at 9.5 is a steal, Ziyech at 8 is great value for such a phenomenal creator and Pulisic is on his way to emulating Hazard. Imagine if they add Havertz...

Last season the top 3 Liverpool defenders outscored all other defenders. And that was with Alisson injured, sent off and Gomez out. I expect them to score even more highly this time. City, Wolves and other defenders will be quite a distance behind.

In midfield, I don't expect many points to separate Salah, Auba, Kevin, Raz, maybe Bruno. So any two will suffice.

Yeah i really want him. Once again though it will depend on fixtures.

KDB, Salah, Auba, Sterling, Mane, Bruno is I think my preferred order of expensive mids

Was in my first draft - alongside KDB and Fernandes.
No Salah though - and then I bottled it. Salah back in, Auba out.
With Auba in the midfield too, I need to be making saving as elsewhere.
Can't quire fin 0.5 to upgrade KDB (Not that I think it an upgrade), or the 1.5 to swap Bruno F (and I don't want a 5.0 Striker, although I did think about it ...)

Yes, but you lose out on good defenders or you have to get cheap forwards.

3 £10.5+ mids means you have to sacrifice defence or attack or both. You also have to look at the cumulative effect of the enablers you have to pick to help you get that 3rd premium MF.

              It’s not just that, though.

I did a draft with KdB, Salah and Bruno. I had to ditch Doherty for a 4.5 and basically only have Ings or Jiminez and lose Mitrovic for fodder.

Then I thought about it. Having, say Grealish, Doherty and Mitrovic may not be as sexy as having Bruno as a 3rd mid.

But, unless you really hit the jackpot, a £4.5 defender at best realistically gets you about 80 points. A non playing 3rd striker gets you nothing. Even if Bruno gets you 220 points, that’s 300 points total.

Doherty, if fit, gets you between 140-160 points. Grealish is good for about 140-150 pts and Mitrovic should get about 100, all based on what they’ve already done in a full season in the Prem. That’s about 400 points.

For me it’s about looking at getting the most out of every position, not spending it all on a few big name players.

It takes discipline, especially when guys like Bruno haul, but you can’t have them all and the price points are deliberately made so that the bigger you go in MF the smaller you have to go everywhere else.

Nomar might come in, but for me I've got 12 active outfield players.

Def 3 Liverpool and 2 Wolves
Mid - premiums in Auba and KDB, plus Greenwood, Foden and Soucek
Fwd - Jimenez and Mitrovic (plus 4.5 benchie)

Just toying with different line ups at the moment.

Going Nyland and McCarthy in goal at the moment.

TAA and Doherty are my 2 defs and 2 £4.5’s plus Ferguson at the moment wrap around them.

Up front I’m currently going Mitrovic, Ings and Jiminez. That’s unlikely to change barring a pre season injury. I do think those 3 potentially will give you good bang for your buck.

KdB and Salah are my 2 big hitting mids and I’m messing about with 3 medium mids around those two. I like Grealish, Soucek and St Maximin as 2 of this 3 and some cash in the bank to upgrade if necessary.

      General FPL discussion:

What's the biggest minus you've ever taken? And with hindsight, what's the biggest you'd ever take again?

I did -12 a few seasons ago and the stupidity of it still haunts me.

I took a -16 to get Sanchez once because I panicked after my best mate clawed back a 50 point lead when he capped Alexis away to West Ham a few years ago.

        I wouldn't do it again.

-8. Biggest I'd ever take is maybe -12.

I took a -8 in GW38 last season and it still paid off.

In my first season being on this site, I took way too many hits. I’m pretty sure I took a -28 that involved Cabeye and Rooney.

I also remember captaining Lescott that year! 😆

Jurgen Klopp on Kostas Tsimikas: "Robbo and Trent, let's say, they cannot play every season 50-something games – it would limit their careers, to be honest, even when they come through. So I'm really happy that we got this proper option & he is a proper option."

            2/10.

Three Liv defenders will all end in tears, it was all the rage before last season but rapidly fell apart when they didn't keep a clean sheet until GW5.

Alisson won't get injured GW1 again and Gomez is fit.

Leno might not be Arsenal's #1 keeper.
You have one playing striker. If Martial is rested, there's no one to step up.

                Effectively a 4-5-1.

Could work, but like you say, if Martial goes missing and Liv concede then the fun starts.

Considering he’s relying on all his MF playing, Willian and Greenwood are interesting choices. Waiting for the team sheets on early Saturday afternoon will be interesting.

Still conjecture, we'll have to wait for friendlies like always, but I'd say Ferguson, Johnson and Gordon are the hot favorites at this stage.

          Any 4-3-3’s in da house?

          McCarthy
          TAA, VVD, Laporte, Vinagre
          KDB, Bruno, Greenwood
          Jimmy, Ings, Mitro
          (lol, Taylor, lol, lol)

Plus 1.0 ITB for a quick upgrade of Jimmy/Ings straight to Werner if he happens to explode early doors or Antonio/Wood/DCL etc for Mitro’s inevitable assault on a referee & subsequent 20-game suspension

Still not happy at leaving out the likes of Pulisic, Kun, Martial, Rashford, Vardy, Robbo, Doherty.... but there’s just so much choice in defence & up front this year it’s unreal

Fixtures could change several of these though

Looks great - prolly cos it's similar to mine. You've gone Bruno and Ings to my 5-3-2 with Gomez and Auba and maybe I've got a bit more on the bench, but not so different.

I read an article by David Lynch that the PL have discussed a finalised table after a minimum of 19 games in the event of a second wave of Covid. Assuming this is something the PL will press ahead with, I imagine City and United will play in GW1 to avoid any future fixture scheduling issues.

One thing I'm going to try and make use of this season is the Watchlist feature. I think it'll help navigate through other players at similar prices and help avoid into panic buying. Players can be added on the merit of their stats, eye test etc.

          For example:

You have ASM at 5.5m and he isn't doing great. Instead of going on the Transfers page and being tempted into someone like Jahanbakhsh after a lucky haul, you go to your Watchlist where you have other 5.5m~ mids who are doing well in stat tables or eye test: Saka, Klich, Armstrong.

Every GW you review your Watchlist and remove/add players as you see best fit. This will result in selecting players from a smaller, but more quality pool group of players.

Embarrassing I know, but come to think of it I've never used it. It makes too much sense not to use.

I've always used it this way. Not trying to big myself up but I assumed everyone did the same. It's a good way to narrow down your plans so like you said you don't get blindsided by player of the week.

Yea idk why they removed the notes, they just sneakily removed it a few seasons back. I can only vaguely remember the graphs now

But yea, I should probably use the watch list more, I do add players to it but dont consult it too often tbh. In draft the watch list is paramount, picking up those players coming back from injury etc

          Hmm

          4.5 4.0
          TAA, ___, Vinagre, Taylor, 4.0
          Salah, KDB, ___, Greenwood, Soucek
          Wood, ___, ___

          A) Doherty, Sterling, Antonio, Davis (3-5-2)
          B) Arsenal 4.5, Rashford, Werner, Davis (3-5-2)
          C) Doherty, Gordon, Jimenez, Werner (3-4-3)

On A, prefer the structure of B in terms of price points, and suspect that C is the best distribution of funds. Any thoughts?

How is this for a (I am really bored) first draft:

          Martinez / Nyland

          Tierney / Walker-Peters / Pieters / Ferguson / Johnson

Auba (or Salah) / Pusilic / Greenwood / Mahrez / Gordon

          Kane / Ings / Martial

You probably know the risks with Martinez so something to monitor - luckily Charity Shield may give some indication to this.

Not keen on double Arsenal defence, although I think Tierney could be a good pick.

You probably know the risks of going without KDB and Bruno.

              On that bottom point

I’m really not a fan of ownership-based picks but you really need at least one of KDB/Bruno or they could brutalise you early on if you get unlucky.

Possibly, I might swap Auba to De Bruyne but I guess I'm thinking Mahrez and Greenwood are such good value that the extra points will be made up elsewhere.

Yeah waiting to see if Ramsdale gets a similar price but I suspect he'll be 5.0. Tierney seemed really good at the end and if Martinez gets the nod over Leno he is really good value.

Always going to be someone else I want in midfield, just looking for value.

          Leno | Button

          TAA | Robbo | Vinagre | Ayling | 4.5

          Pulisic | Ziyech | Greenwood | Foden | KDB

          Kane | Mitro | Davis

Aware Pulisic is injured but doing a format where I have players long with limited subs.
