Tips on how to target a top 10k FPL overall rank

Our new FPL Masterclass series unites three of the best Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers around: two-time India champion Lateriser, seven-time top 10k finisher Zophar and five-time top 1,000 finisher Tom Freeman.

Between them, they have 20 overall ranks in the top 10,000, nine of which were within the top 1k.

They’ll be chipping in with regular Fantasy advice ahead of the start of 2021/22, with opinion on everything from tips for newcomers to captaincy picks.

Our trio of top managers will be writing for Fantasy Football Scout every week throughout the new season – and only subscribers will be able to read all of their articles in full.

FPL pre-season: Trossard hits hat-trick from wing-back role 1

Having previously provided general advice for FPL managers ahead of the upcoming campaign, discussed proven assets v Fantasy gambles, mused on the importance of a strong bench and debated the importance of team value, our panel are now asked about their strong suit: how to target a top 10k finish.

LATERISER SAID…

This is such a tricky question and I don’t really know how to answer it but let me give it a go. Firstly, you need to determine what your own skillset and temperament is like. Are you good at playing a stat-focused game or an eye-test game? Are you comfortable playing a high variance game (which is dependent on your risk appetite)? Take advantage of your own skillset and temperament and play the game you’re comfortable with (it doesn’t have to be black or white).

Once that is out of the way, don’t presume that this season is going to be similar to the previous one. Every campaign in FPL is very unique and you need to try having no biases from the previous season going into the new one. Methods that worked for you last year might not necessarily work for you this time around.

So after every week, you need to take a step back and think macro and strategy while making your moves. FPL is such a dynamic game that one week is a very long time and a lot of moving parts are there which you need to be on top of.

The most important tip, in my opinion, is that nothing really increases your chances of success in this game more than good old groundwork and research. This game has become more and more popular over the years and the managers we are competing with in FPL are armed with more and more information. This means that you need to go more than the extra yard to gain an advantage on your competition, which means reading more articles, doing your own research, watching highlights carefully, visiting fan forums, etc. This is always going to be the most important factor in giving you a chance of finishing in the top 10k once you’ve determined the style of play you’re comfortable with.

TOM SAID…

Firstly, the game is much, much harder nowadays. Even the casuals will be aware of the Double and Blank Gameweeks, so I’m not sure setting yourself a top 10k target from a pool of 8m+ players is such a good idea. I’d argue that a top 50k finish is perhaps more realistic, and let’s be honest, the difference between the two is often a couple of big captaincy calls going your way, or maybe your Triple Captain firing. Sometimes you’ll get lucky, sometimes you won’t; that’s just the way it goes.

However, to hit those really high finishes, planning is essential. Try and visualise how you want your team to look a few weeks down the line, paying careful attention to captaincy and any big fixture swings. As a result, it should at least ensure you don’t have to take any unnecessary hits ahead of a deadline.

Knowing when to react to the development of teams in shorter spells is also important, too: always ask yourself if they are the real deal or have they simply benefitted from an easier run of fixtures?

Also, ensure you put enough time aside to watch games and analyse data, so that you can at least form your own opinions rather than count on others.

ZOPHAR SAID…

With the number of FPL users growing each year, achieving a top 10k finish is only getting more difficult. With the game so popular and information so widely available, players are well aware of Double/Blank Gameweeks and there are so many resources to aid them in their planning for the same. Simply picking the popular template players used to be a viable strategy early on but this would probably only get you a 30-40k finish these days, not in the top 10k.

To get there now, you need to move onto the next bandwagon before the crowd. There’s no point transferring a player in after a haul, as the masses would already have caught onto him and there won’t be any significant gains to be had as most people around your rank would already own him. For this, it is necessary to think forward. Look at when the fixtures are favourable for a player and bring him in ahead of that run, rather than waiting for him to deliver.

You also need a few differentials in your squad to make up ground. If you are near 70-80% of the template, then the gains are going to be steady and not significant. A few punts on low-owned players, say under 10% ownership, could propel you up the ranks if they deliver. I would say the last 10 weeks are a good time to look for differentials, not early doors. In the first half of the season, it is better to go with the trusted, proven picks, and by the second half, we usually have enough information to ascertain which players are going under the radar.

I fancy Toney+Robbo. Robbo over Digne, while Toney closes potential gap vs. DCL with penalty duties.

On a more basic level, being organised helps.

Missing a gameweek deadline has made me lose motivation to keep up with FPL, in the past.

I set my team for the next GW as soon as I can after the deadline. If I miss a transfer, it lessens the impact.

Basic indeed, yet it’s amazing how many people don’t do this. First thing I do when the game updates after deadline is pick my team and captain for next week.

    Sanchez - (Foster)

    TAA - Digne - Shaw - (Veltman) - (B.Williams)

    Salah(C) - Fernandes(VC) - Jota - Bowen - Rafinha

    Watkins - Antonio - (Obafemi)

Think this is fairly locked in. Bowen vs Toney the final decision. I like Bowen's projections, and if Antonio gets injured he becomes an even better option. Furthermore huge differential in comparison to Toney who could crash if failing to score in first 2.

    Thoughts and criticisms below please.

Good fixtures to start, not a bad season last year, but I feel could have been better. Will play ST if Ant gets injured, and is easily shiftable to Harrison when fixtures swing.

Big differential vs Toney at 6.5 and in a otherwise template team I like that difference.

I have Toney but I get what your saying , its going to be tough to shift him if he crashes as the offerings for 6.5m forwards is poor, there are plenty of other 6.5m mids though. Raphina and Buendia to name just 2, Harrison at only 6m looks a good punt too

The class of the 4.5 field if he plays is McArthur by a long old distance - his pricing is frankly mysterious. Plenty of returns in his history

He does actually have a chance of starting too as things stand. Gallagher and Riedewald are the most likely pair in the Palace midfield and then it is a question of perming one from Schlupp McArthur and Mili - probably in that order.

      1. Andy_Social
        • 11 Years

"A chance of starting" is not what you want though. For a minor benchie, the one or two times he is actually called on, you want to be sure he'll get you those 1-3 points. Brownhill and Gilmour will do that.

        1. sirmorbach
          • 7 Years

Andy is right in my view. A 4.5 mid shoud provide you with 2 points, 2 certain points. The odd assist here and there is a bonus.

I was really enthusiastic about Lateriser's philosophy before last season started. I did go for it, focusing my transfers on premium options to captain them. Unfortunately, last season was a complete anomaly with staggered starts, inadequate pre-seasons, covid, no fans. I started bad and panicked myself into taking too many hits. I'll be more disciplined this time. I won't follow UC slavishly, but I will try to focus my transfers on a small band of high-price assets. Alternatively, if someone like Salah or Kane starts on fire, I'll just perma-captain them until they burn out!

Doesn't always work of course, but basically look at the usual suspect premiums and try to match them with the block of upcoming fixtures against the weaker teams.
Plan rotation in the same way as with 4.5 defs.
Don't worry much about form - easy fixtures create form.
Last year was easy to have Mo, Bruno and Kane in the same team so was pretty straightforward.
This year we'll struggle to have more than 2 premiums so will need to be a bit more careful, but based on fixtures I'm not starting with Bruno.

You'll be able to have 3 premiums soon enough, probably by around the second international break. Just not very easily in GW1.

Problems there are some premiums up their game against Top '6' opponents and some are flat-track bullies.
Some get rested against the weaker opponents. For the best sides, they have European games every midweek for most of the season.

Yeah I was thinking of it too, you re probably right. This is mainly because the defenders haven't played lots of friendlies together so they are not that ready

Problem with that is that it eats up more of your budget thus weakening other areas of your squad. Not only that, City and Chelsea tend to rotate defenders at times when you don't expect it.

Also believe that there are players around the 4.5 - 5.5m price mark that can offer as much as the premium defenders.

    Evening All.
RMT please, bit lightweight on the bench, anything you would change.
    Bachmann. Keane, Konate, AWB.
    Son, Salah, Mahrez, Soucek, Sancho.
    Watkins, DCL
    Foster, Duffy, Sierralta, obafemi.

Quite a lot in Midfield. this comes to exactly 100m, hoping that if I need changes, can quite easily swap a mid that's not doing anything.

Guys am I right to go Watkins over Wilson here? Had Wilson since the first draft but the fear of having no Villa is getting to me lol

    Sanchez
    Digne Tierney Taa Wan B
    Salah Bruno ESR
    Cavani ******* Toney

    4.0 Raphinha Ayling Brownhill

And Wilson got a knock apparently in the last game. He's a big injury magnet I think

Watkins probably the better option then

Based on last years scores I have plotted the expected points per price band. Looking at the results the optimal bands for each position are:

    Def - 5.5-6.0 150-180pts
    Mid - 6.5-7.5 140-150pts
    For - 7.5-8.0 160-170pts

This is based on pts per investment. Going higher does not have the same level of return.

    Exclusions:
This does not account for captain selection.
This does not account for players who make a mockery of their pricetag. Of course there will be some and you should own them.

Curious excercise. You really have to invest in mid to avoid tragic returns.

Today I tweaked my draft from a 4-4-2 to a 3-5-2 to a 4-5-1. Big in midfield indeed.

I'm not even sure anymore. There might be a 5-2-3 formation worth testing with only huge mids.

People who’ve seen Tony and Brentford: is he really a viable option? The million over a Wilson etc would be grateful but I worry it’s a lot for a totally unproven player.

      I think so.

He is the key component to an attack minded team, is on pens and has a good eye for goal. Brentford also have a not too shabby opening 5 games as well.

In previous seasons Bamford, Pukki, and Mitrovic all hit the ground running having come from promoted teams as unproven players.....for the price and upside, I think its worth the punt on Toney

    Chaps

I think West Ham could do well again this season but who is the best mid to jump on for the good early fixtures.

Or would you go with a better 6-6.5 player. Got Raph already.

    A Benrahma
    B Bowen
    C Fornals

Bowen out of those. Feel with benrahma he is the one who will haul but need to get him in at the right time. Also will probably be rotated in and out

Problem with West Ham, is that Moyes has alot of midfielders to rotate. It will be interesting to see who takes Lingards place. Also, if they sign a striker e.g. Abraham we could see Antonio move position.

This is the big question for me. If Abraham joins he will surely lead the line, possibly playing together up top, but probably rotating with Antonio (due to fitness issues) but also having Antonio drift wide as he often did to free up space for Lingard after his arrival last season. But if he's staying at ManUtd then someone needs to fill that gap and possibly either of Bowen or Benrahma could do that.

Looking back on last season, both my biggest memory and biggest regret is not following my gut in two separate game weeks for separate transfers.
So I've learnt for this season I'd rather follow my gut and be wrong, than to ignore it.

Please suggest (for gw1 to 3 only):

    1) jota OR Havertz OR Foden
    2) Bowen OR Harrison OR Smith Rowe

    thank you

Fixtures are a bit ropey for ESR, Havertz, Foden

      Nailedness issues for Foden, Jota

If you are picking one from each I would go Havertz & Bowen
