Tips on how to target a top 10k FPL overall rank

Our new FPL Masterclass series unites three of the best Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers around: two-time India champion Lateriser, seven-time top 10k finisher Zophar and five-time top 1,000 finisher Tom Freeman.

Between them, they have 20 overall ranks in the top 10,000, nine of which were within the top 1k.

They’ll be chipping in with regular Fantasy advice ahead of the start of 2021/22, with opinion on everything from tips for newcomers to captaincy picks.

Our trio of top managers will be writing for Fantasy Football Scout every week throughout the new season – and only subscribers will be able to read all of their articles in full.

FPL pre-season: Trossard hits hat-trick from wing-back role 1

Having previously provided general advice for FPL managers ahead of the upcoming campaign, discussed proven assets v Fantasy gambles, mused on the importance of a strong bench and debated the importance of team value, our panel are now asked about their strong suit: how to target a top 10k finish.

LATERISER SAID…

This is such a tricky question and I don’t really know how to answer it but let me give it a go. Firstly, you need to determine what your own skillset and temperament is like. Are you good at playing a stat-focused game or an eye-test game? Are you comfortable playing a high variance game (which is dependent on your risk appetite)? Take advantage of your own skillset and temperament and play the game you’re comfortable with (it doesn’t have to be black or white).

Once that is out of the way, don’t presume that this season is going to be similar to the previous one. Every campaign in FPL is very unique and you need to try having no biases from the previous season going into the new one. Methods that worked for you last year might not necessarily work for you this time around.

So after every week, you need to take a step back and think macro and strategy while making your moves. FPL is such a dynamic game that one week is a very long time and a lot of moving parts are there which you need to be on top of.

The most important tip, in my opinion, is that nothing really increases your chances of success in this game more than good old groundwork and research. This game has become more and more popular over the years and the managers we are competing with in FPL are armed with more and more information. This means that you need to go more than the extra yard to gain an advantage on your competition, which means reading more articles, doing your own research, watching highlights carefully, visiting fan forums, etc. This is always going to be the most important factor in giving you a chance of finishing in the top 10k once you’ve determined the style of play you’re comfortable with.

TOM SAID…

Firstly, the game is much, much harder nowadays. Even the casuals will be aware of the Double and Blank Gameweeks, so I’m not sure setting yourself a top 10k target from a pool of 8m+ players is such a good idea. I’d argue that a top 50k finish is perhaps more realistic, and let’s be honest, the difference between the two is often a couple of big captaincy calls going your way, or maybe your Triple Captain firing. Sometimes you’ll get lucky, sometimes you won’t; that’s just the way it goes.

However, to hit those really high finishes, planning is essential. Try and visualise how you want your team to look a few weeks down the line, paying careful attention to captaincy and any big fixture swings. As a result, it should at least ensure you don’t have to take any unnecessary hits ahead of a deadline.

Knowing when to react to the development of teams in shorter spells is also important, too: always ask yourself if they are the real deal or have they simply benefitted from an easier run of fixtures?

Also, ensure you put enough time aside to watch games and analyse data, so that you can at least form your own opinions rather than count on others.

ZOPHAR SAID…

With the number of FPL users growing each year, achieving a top 10k finish is only getting more difficult. With the game so popular and information so widely available, players are well aware of Double/Blank Gameweeks and there are so many resources to aid them in their planning for the same. Simply picking the popular template players used to be a viable strategy early on but this would probably only get you a 30-40k finish these days, not in the top 10k.

To get there now, you need to move onto the next bandwagon before the crowd. There’s no point transferring a player in after a haul, as the masses would already have caught onto him and there won’t be any significant gains to be had as most people around your rank would already own him. For this, it is necessary to think forward. Look at when the fixtures are favourable for a player and bring him in ahead of that run, rather than waiting for him to deliver.

You also need a few differentials in your squad to make up ground. If you are near 70-80% of the template, then the gains are going to be steady and not significant. A few punts on low-owned players, say under 10% ownership, could propel you up the ranks if they deliver. I would say the last 10 weeks are a good time to look for differentials, not early doors. In the first half of the season, it is better to go with the trusted, proven picks, and by the second half, we usually have enough information to ascertain which players are going under the radar.

    Sanchez/Foster
    TAA/Digne/White/Ayling/Veltman
    Bruno/Salah/Buendia/ESR/Raphinha
    Watkins/DCL/Toney

Thoughts? Wondering if a mid should be downgraded to 4.5 to improve a defender? Veltman and Ayling for alternating.

    Thanks!

Yeah would say you put ESR (difficult start) to fodder & upgrade Veltman & or Ayling

Having eight attacking players can be a good idea, but I am everything but certain about having both ESR and Raphinha with their early fixtures and Toney is a risk. That looks good for a dead team, but how are you planning to rotate them? Also getting bandwagons that cost 7 million or more is difficult wit that structure. So for me that isn´t a well balanced team and has rotation and (very likely) transfer issues.

For those planning on going without Fernandes what are your thoughts with regards to your teams? Trying to cover Fernandes with other United assets like Greenwood and/or Cavani? Or split the cash amongst likes of Mahrez, Son and Sancho? Or other direction?

Son and reallocate the marginal 2.0m with the (mistaken?) belief that the money will more than recoup the lost points from the downgrade from Bruno.

Nice, at present i've gone with both Son and Mahrez as they seem to be getting plenty of minutes, haven't played during the summer and look prolific through out pre season.

Unsure if I should gamble by going without Raphinha, his games to start the season are okay at best but don't want to get priced out of getting him in later just due to high ownership despite not having a great start. Looking potentially at Buendia and then move to Rephinha from GW3/4.

Aren't you worried about Bruno's EO? having at least a Sancho or Cavani to pick up an assit or goal that he is involved with could blunt the hurt if he goes off.

Who are you going with instead?

That's mamba mentality right there. Do you often look for low EO as an opportunity to gain rather than an opportunity to get hurt by a high EO player you don't have?

I don't think about EO. You can't own every asset, so you gotta make the allocations that make the most sense to you after you've analyzed everything. Let other owners worry about *my* picks . . . bwahahaha.

I believe that Son plus the reallocation of money is a better play than Bruno. I could be wrong, but the tools on this site have me pointed towards a "Salah is essential, live without Bruno" lifestyle.

I don´t like the term "cover" either. Defensive CS pts can be covered, but attacking points usually not. Son and Kane passing to each other was one of the few exceptions last season. Only points cover points. The question with Bruno depends more on Kane situation. I am not saying that Kane is essential if he goes to Manchester, but if Bruno money is spread around getting him may practically mean WC. And that is a position where I don´t want to be in. Bruno to Kane costs basically two transfers and that I can happily take. -8 or -12 is just simply too much.

Tbh I don´t fancy it, but I base my way of playing fpl in expected points and there seems to be a lot of value in 5.5 defenders. The only decent 5.5 mid is ESR and he has 2/3 sour fixtures to start with.

Greenwood started the pre season earlier but it hasn't been brilliant. Jota is not advanced as say, Mo & Sadio but ahead of Firmino. Some are entertaining the possibility Klopp plays Ox in that front 3 but I just don't see it... Jota is much better player..

My very first draft had Havertz in it. Then I convinced myself he was a rotation risk and noted very few teams seemed to include him. Been out for the day today and discovered when I got home he’d scored. Came on here now just to see the reaction and sure enough he’s springing up in lots of teams. Amusing really.

I think most people when they look at the season ticker forget that it doesn't matter when it comes to the top sides. For certain teams every fixture should be considered green.

      Chelsea are one of those.

Exactly. Pretty much every game for Man City should be seen as blue, and pretty much every fixture for Norwich/Watford/Brentford (the 3 favourites for relegation) should be considered red.

    Thoughts?

    Bachmann // Foster
    TAA // Robbo // Cresswell // 4.0 // 4.0
    Bruno // Salah // Buendia // Raphinha // 4.5
    Watkins // Antonio // Toney

This relies heavily on the team playing every game as no sub cover. What are people’s thoughts… all out with a ‘better’ squad or have cover just incase?

The alternative would be downgrade Robbo to Shaw and upgrade a 4.0 to White.

For me I don't fancy the Liverpool double up and would probably go down to a 5.5 or 6 and then put that money into one of Raphinha or Buendia.

Say you did Robertson to Dias or whatever is in vogu, you could put Raphinha or Buendia up to a 7.5 which could be a key price point. Greenwood/Jota/Torres/Barnes/Pepe the world is your oyster to jump around.

Taking a calculated punt with Bachmann. This is based on favoruable fixtures to start the season and their cleansheet total last season (23). Which I'm told is a record high in the championship. They also acheived the record low of goals conceded (31).

Seems worth the gamble up until wildcard time at least. Even more so now with Sanchez picking up a slight knock, Webster, Burn, Lamptey injured and White leaving Brighton.

Hard to know - seems a different type of player, Watkins would have more pace I think whereas Toney looks to be a bit more of a poacher

But they're probably more comparable than most, both having played in Brentford attack in the last 24 months.

Watkins at Brentford year before last got 27 returns in his season for them before the Villa move... Toney was Watkins' replacement & got 41 returns so a fairly big gulf in output there

I can't see Toney having too much bother against bottom half Premier league defences to be honest, and think he'll also be able to suprise the odd complacent top half defence who turn up expecting a walkover

Agreed on the distinction between the two

But another difference is perhaps that Watkins was a converted wing when he played there. He was also part of the BMW forward line with Benrahma and Mbeumo flanking him. No Brentford expert but I suspect they played rather differently that season

Interestingly Pukki Aarons and Sarr all were around 60 points down in the PL on those totals once baps were factored in and Buendia at 100 down just being the exception that proves this rule

      180 points it is then.

It in interesting for sure. But the problem is that it's so difficult to predict how promoted teams (and therefore players) will do. For Brentford, and for any promoted team, the best opposition they faced in the championship would be the worst in the PL. Toney won't get the same number of chances as he got in the championship. So to me, Toney's fate largely rests on whether Brentford can make the step up or not.

The two most successful promoted teams of recent times - Wolves and Leeds - were emphatic winners of the championship, had very good managers and a solid all-round team. Leeds with their exceptional fitness, commitment and established philosophy were exceptional. Wolves under Nuno had a very well defined game plan and they invested in quality players such as Moutinho and Patricio. Having a very good team behind them enabled Bamford and Jimenez to have good success in PL. I'm not sure if Toney will have that at Brentford at a PL level.

Two less impressive newly promoted teams of recent years - Fulham and Norwich - had similar talismanic strikers (Pukki and Mitrovic). Despite some early success for Pukki, both really struggled once it became clear their teams were struggling to make the step up to PL level.

I think Toney is certainly a decent shout, especially for the start of the season. Brentford will be eager to start fast and maybe they will prove good enough to fit in a PL level.

Those stats say Buendia for me. Avl is so much better team compared to Brentford. Toney may also be worth a punt, but how many chances is he going to get? Is Brentford capable to have possession enough? If Toney isn´t fast enough in counter attacks it´s a big risk if and when they have to defend a lot.

Is this team good to go?

    Sánchez (Foster)
    Alexander-Arnold, Shawm Digne (White) (Fofana)
    Salah, Fernandes, Raphinha, Buendía (Bissouma)
    Watkins, Calvert-Lewin, Toney

    Thank you!

On 28 May 2021, James was ruled out of the squad for the 2021 Copa América due to his lack of conditioning, i.e. for not having the optimal physical level, as he had recently been recovering from injury

Season is 12 days away and my team Arsenal are already finished. Arteta gone with 3 games.

Bellerin, Holding and Elneny still playing. Partey out injured for months most likely and we’ve just blown all our money on a defender.

Promised a summer overhaul but left with the same turds floating around.

What a badly run club we are now. I really hope fans boycott the stadium.

Yet you have so many positives. Tierney is one of the best full backs in the league. Ben White and Gabriel have potential to form a quality partnership that could last years. Saka looks like he has the potential to become a star. Smith-Rowe is being given his chance to show what he can do after the glimpses of quality last season.

Pepe is finally coming good and was showing a level of consistency that he hadn't before.

Martinelli is a prospect that seems forgotten.

Arsenal are in a better position than most.

There are positive young players but to have Partey potentially out for months, Xhaka and Bellerin getting new contracts is just a joke.

Going too be the most toxic season at the Emirates. I’d be surprised if Arteta will last 5 games.

A good CB signing was badly needed though. And Partey injury is unfortunate more than anything to do with management.

Disappointing not to see more players offloaded though. Arsenal seems like a club that always has players floating around that are just draining the wage bill.

Selling Martinez and now having to look for the likes of Ramsdale has to be up there with one of the worst pieces of business in recent years.

Thinking of getting a bit wild right out the gates and going triple captain on Salah game week 1.

No Olympics this summer and opening up against newly promoted Norwich who have some COVID issues and might have difficulty putting out a strong 11.

    Any thoughts?

I plan to have both. Those plum fixtures are so good, that if I am forced to take -4 before gw4 to ditch them both, so be it. As written in the article, having template team the whole season doesn´t get anyone to top 10k. Double ups with good fixtures are sound strategy and for example Magnussen has used it succesfully.

Evening all, how is this lot shaping up? Massive Bruno hole and I’m uneasy about it but not having him helps strengthen elsewhere. Changes needed to the below?

    Bachmann (Foster)
    TAA Robbo Dias (White) (Manquillo)
    Salah Mahrez Havertz Raphinha (Brownhill)
    Watkins Antonio Toney

It's a statement defence I suppose - not a fan of double Liverpool here but could well be wrong.

Not seeing the attraction of Dias really. Had him for most of the cs run last season and he wasn't that far ahead in returns of budget wingbacks and meh value. Really long term play that and needs an instant City cs run.

I'd get a 5.5 or 5.0 - lots of interesting alternatives there and both are good price points to be on. Make that saving and I'd invest in Bamford probs ignoring early red fixtures which I suspect are misleading

Great feedback thanks! The biggest issue I have right now is no Bruno. I could downgrade Robbo > Coufal, Havertz > Mount then Mahrez > Bruno?

Best plausible transfers still to happen for FPL?

I'm ruling out Kane to City here as it would simply make it a ten man game. Haaland seems unlikely this year. My current wishlist - low budget mostly

Pereira to Leeds - very exciting that one
Cantwell to Villa - 5.5 number ten to link up with Buendia and Norwich crippled 🙂
Edouard to Brighton - he might be good and can't be worse than what they have
Ings to Spurs if "that" move happens - would take Tammy there too
Rice to United - doubt Varane is enough to transform the 5.5 defence by himself with that midfield in front of him

    1. Flair

Matheus Pereira to Everton - spices up the ~6.5M bracket more, Everton desperately need a quality winger, did well last season and lovely opening fixtures

Edouard to Brighton - the striker they desperately need to reach the next level?

Abraham to Wolves - him and Jimenez up top could be a very potent combo

      1. pingissimus
        • 5 Years

But it's Everton - the graveyard of interesting signings. Might get a few weeks before the inevitable rot sets in.

Fun call on Tammy to Wolves - suspect they would fall over each other though.

Best midfielder 8.0 & under? Currently on Greenwood but not entirely convinced...

Could Mount, Pepe, Dele, or Barnes emerge as a good pick?
