FPL 2022/23 prices released: Sunday round-up – James and Chilwell revealed

More Fantasy Premier League (FPL) player prices for the 2022/23 season are being released and we’re bringing you live updates as and when they drop.

Chelsea were the first club to make an announcement on Sunday morning, with Reece James and Ben Chilwell among the players priced up. West Ham United and Jarrod Bowen then took centre stage at noon, with Newcastle United, Southampton and Bournemouth following on.

CHELSEA

There has been plenty of talk in the Fantasy community over the last month over whether a cheaper Ben Chilwell could ‘cover’ the more expensive Reece James in 2022/23 but what we didn’t anticipate was that FPL would price them identically.

James and Chilwell both start the new season at £6.0m, which is on the generous side for James given his attacking threat. The right-back’s patchy fitness record and the defensive turmoil that Chelsea are facing this summer, with Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen making an exit, are contributing factors to his cost but there’ll be plenty of takers at that price.

The Blues are near the top of our Season Ticker for fixture difficulty in the first seven Gameweeks, meeting only Tottenham Hotspur of last season’s top six.

Also to be filed under ‘bargain’ is Edouard Mendy (£5.0m), who like Alisson yesterday has been priced up cheaper than virtually all of us would have predicted. Mendy has fallen one million pounds from last summer and the popularity of the set-and-forget £4.5m FPL shotstopper strategy is certainly being challenged, with Ederson surely set for a lower starting price given what was happened with the goalkeepers of Liverpool and Chelsea.

Thiago Silva (£5.5m) and Cesar Azpilicueta (£5.5m) were the other Chelsea defensive assets priced up this morning.

Further up the pitch, we have seen the expected positional reclassification of Kai Havertz (£8.0m). The German is now a forward in FPL, with just over 60% of his league appearances for Chelsea last season coming when playing through the middle up front. By our rough calculations, Havertz would have lost 18 clean sheet/goal points had he been a forward in 2021/22 but earned an estimated 10 extra bonus points to partly compensate.

Mason Mount has had a minor price rise to £8.0m following his best-ever season for FPL points. The England international racked up 22 attacking returns from just 27 starts and five substitute appearances, averaging an impressive 6.1 points per start.

Callum Hudson-Odoi (£5.5m), Jorginho (£6.0m) and Christian Pulisic (£6.0m) are the other Chelsea midfielders priced up, while Timo Werner (£8.0m) remains a forward and costs the same as Havertz.

WEST HAM UNITED

Jarrod Bowen‘s (£8.5m) reward for a barnstorming 2021/22 in which he racked up 29 attacking returns and outscored all FPL midfielders bar Son Heung-min and Mohamed Salah is a price hike of £2.0m.

In all likelihood, there’ll probably be few initial takers in the right-winger, and not just because of price: West Ham face Man City, Spurs and Chelsea in the opening six Gameweeks, along with big-spending Aston Villa and a deceptively difficult Brighton side.

Michail Antonio (£7.5m) started last season on fire but ended up something of a damp squib, scoring 40 points in the first three Gameweeks but only adding a further hundred in his next 33 run-outs. FPL have consequently decided to leave him static at £7.5m, and again there will likely be limited interest come Gameweek 1.

There are some potential future bargains in defence if new signing Nayef Aguerd (£5.0m) can help tighten up a backline that kept more shut-outs than just four other teams in 2021/22.

Aaron Cresswell (£5.0m) and Vladimir Coufal (£4.5m) have offered decent attacking threat and returns over the last two FPL seasons but that sometimes hasn’t been backed up with clean sheets at the other end. FPL have thus dropped them both half a million in price.

Aguerd is highly rated and was part of a Rennes side that had the third-best defensive record in Ligue 1 over the two seasons he was at the French club.

Ben Johnson, a bargain-bin £4.0m in 2021/22, is similarly available at £4.5m this time around.

In midfield, Declan Rice (£5.0m), Said Benrahma (£6.0m), Pablo Fornals (£5.5m), Manuel Lanzini (£5.5m) and Tomas Soucek (£5.5m) have also been priced up today.

NEWCASTLE UNITED

There are some potential FPL bargains from big spenders Newcastle United, who have been splashing the Saudi cash this summer on new recruits.

The Magpies will have designs on a top 10 finish next season, with heavy investment set to continue over the next two months.

One of their recent arrivals, Nick Pope, starts life on Tyneside at £5.0m. FPL royalty Pope will hopefully be playing under better defenders than he was at Burnley but still not quite at the top-level standard where he’ll be deprived of the save points that have helped boost his appeal over the years. Still, with Chelsea’s Mendy surprisingly listed at £5.0m and Alisson only half a million more expensive, the appeal of mid-price goalkeepers outside the top four has taken a bit of a dent.

Kieran Trippier and Matt Targett also both come in at £5.0m, meanwhile. Since making his debut in Gameweek 24 last season, the corner-taking Targett ranked fifth among defenders for chances created and second for successful crosses. But it’s Trippier who is probably the slightly bigger draw, with the England international not only on a share of indirect dead-ball duties too but a whizz at direct free-kick situations, as well.

Dan Burn (£4.5m) and Fabian Schar (£4.5m) are cheaper routes into the Magpies’ defence but one of them could make way for the as yet unpriced Sven Botman.

Newcastle are second in our Season Ticker for fixture difficulty between Gameweeks 6-15 and also entertain newly promoted Nottingham Forest on the opening weekend.

Further forward, Callum Wilson stays at £7.5m despite another injury-ravaged campaign. His record at Newcastle overall is pretty elite, with 20 goals, six assists and 204 FPL points arriving in 39 starts. String that record together over the course of one campaign (minus the 39th game!) and you’re into ‘Team of the Season’ territory, although ever-present status has been a pipe dream when it comes to Wilson.

Allan Saint-Maximin has been reclassified as a midfielder and now costs £6.5m, while influential January signing Bruno Guimaraes has moved up from £5.0m to £6.0m. Joelinton (£6.0m) is also now an FPL midfielder following his redeployment in the engine room under Eddie Howe.

Joe Willock (£5.0m) and Chris Wood (£6.0m) are kindly priced but reliable game-time may well be an issue when Howe has a fully fit squad at his disposal.

SOUTHAMPTON

There’ll be precious little initial interest in FPL assets from Southampton, with the Saints facing a tough run of fixtures in the opening five Gameweeks and finishing 2021/22 in limp fashion.

Now minus Armando Broja and with Tino Livramento potentially sidelined until 2023, there aren’t too many players from Ralph Hasenhuttl’s squad on the Fantasy watchlist.

James Ward-Prowse (£6.5m) is about the pick of a mediocre bunch, with the midfielder not just reliable for starts last season (as always) but also having his best-ever season for FPL points. The penalty-taking, free-kick-scoring, corner-delivering England international has the monopoly on set plays at Southampton and has banked 15 attacking returns in each of the last two seasons.

He finished just outside of the 10 top-scoring FPL midfielders of 2021/22 but hasn’t risen in price.

Kyle Walker-Peters (£4.5m), Jan Bednarek (£4.5m), Romain Perraud (£4.5m) and Mohammed Salisu (£4.5m), part of a defence that shipped goals for fun at the back-end of last season, are all priced the same as one another, while new signing Gavin Bazunu joins the £4.5m goalkeeper club. New centre-half Armel Bella-Kotchap is, you guessed it, also at £4.5m.

Che Adams (£6.5m), Nathan Redmond (£5.5m), Stuart Armstrong (£5.0m) and Oriol Romeu (£5.0m) were also part of today’s reveal.

BOURNEMOUTH

Bournemouth’s very own penalty-taking talisman comes in at half a million cheaper than Aleksandar Mitrovic (£6.5m).

Dominic Solanke was priced up at £6.0m by FPL on Sunday evening and is unsurprisingly the Cherries’ most expensive asset.

The former Liverpool striker played a direct part in just under 50% of the goals that Scott Parker’s scored in their promotion-winning campaign – and that’s without looking at ‘Fantasy assists’ for things like shot rebounds.

FPL have applied a broad £5.5m brush stroke across anyone else of attacking note from the Bournemouth squad, with wingers David Brooks, Jaidon Anthony and Ryan Christie and forward Kieffer Moore all available this price. So too is Philip Billing, who hit double figures for both goals and assists last season in a more advanced central midfield role than we were previously accustomed to seeing him in.

Lewis Cook, a deep-lying playmaker who posed little attacking threat in the Championship, might be overpriced even at £5.0m.

At the back, we’ve got a clean sweep of £4.5m assets.

New signing Ryan Fredericks, attack-minded left-back Jordan Zemura and centre-half Lloyd Kelly are all at this price point, along with the Championship ‘Golden Glove’ winner, Mark Travers.

Really want Vardy to get a price drop.

I want to start with him but only if he’s 9.0/9.5

Not amazing but I trust him.
        No Europe.
If he’s fit to start I’d rather him than most 7-9fwds and he’s an easy shift to anyone else.

Vardy could do great, and the fixtures are bette after a second look at them. Leicester will go for top four this season with no Europe. Fwiw I'm starting with Barnes Madders and Vardy, while everyone elses attention is drawn elsewhere

If I feel good about Madders/Barnes it’s a good way into the attack for cheaper than Vardy for sure.

I suppose a mid-season break for the World Cup is good for those players who are older and/or more prone to fatigue, provided those players aren't going to the World Cup. Can go hard before the World Cup, rest up and go hard again.

Vardy and Mahrez are two that come to mind. But there will be more.

    TAA, Cancelo, James, Trippier* (Tomiyasu)
    Salah(c), Diaz, Grealish, Rashford, Martinelli
    Haaland (4.5, 4.5)

*Trippier to be transferred out before GW3 to chase easy fixtures.

nice team, Martinelli should play a lot should play alot so no worries about him, Rashford is the big mystery, maybe if Ronaldo leaves he'll show signs of form, i get the sense that he is overawed and intimidated by him, but it could be something else idk

My entire midfield bar Salah is all players I dare not own from the start as their prices good skyrocket. On paper they all look seriously under-priced. I think they will all play much bigger roles than FPL towers seem to expect.

If 5 and 5 becomes the base prices, how does that affect the entire game from VORP to everything really? Is it something that can quickly be accounted for or is it going to take some number bods with some in-depth analysis

    1. Now I'm Panicking
      • 9 Years

Should be quite easy - instead of only having 36m budget above base price, it will be 32m (or less if the base prices for GKs and/or defenders go up too).

FWIW I don't think the base prices will change though.

James is 2m over replacement, Toney is 2m over replacement; the forwards are still lame - it's the 451 bench being too expensive that's the problem, a 343 bench can be 4.0 4.0 4.0 4.5 rather than 4.0 4.0 5.0 5.0

      1. Ser Davos
        • 8 Years

        mmm

they've lowered premium keepers to 5.5, which makes sense in isolation given nothing has changed (plus the 3 quota rule)

The likes of Cook/Romeu should really be 4.5, at least one of them

Forwards are .5 over what we'd thought they'd be

        1. Ser Davos
          • 8 Years
          1 year, 10 months ago

It probably will force people back to 3-4-3 if they're having to pay 1-1.5m more on a dead bench

I think Jarvish is right though, base prices (this "formulaic structure" I harp on about) should remain the same

            • 7 Years

It sure looks like they are trying to force us away from 541/451 as the value gained from playing the high ppm defenders is lost on the extra budget rotting on a dead bench.

I don't think they can force it. They can try, but I doubt it's going to work. I don't like the idea of having Gelhardt (5.5) as my 2nd sub, but if it costs one million, then it costs one million.

Are you good folk going with 1 x 4.5 'keeper and the other one a 4.0 'keeper? Or rotating 2 x 4.5's, or maybe even Mendy or DDG at 5.0 and a 4.0 or 4.5 alongside?

    Cheers.

I usually try and spend as least as possible on GKs (as are a bit of a crapshoot), but a nailed 5.0 GK for the team predicted to finish 3rd in the league seems worth the little extra investment.

Scored fewer points per game than Raya and Guaita last season.
Even scored fewer overall pts than relegated Pope.
Kepa seems to play every now and again so there's always that risk.

Personally think someone like Johnstone or Raya might be better bets at 4.5m.

          • 9 Years

That's cherry-picking 2 x 4.5s that were hardly considered at the start of last season though. I think using the law of averages you would expect him to out score the average 4.5, and without much risk of having a poor season.

          1. Piggs Boson
            • 12 Years
            1 year, 10 months ago

It's not cherry-picking when the keepers from those teams are still available 4.5m, we can consider them right now already knowing that they are good options. Well Raya is confirmed 4.5m at least, we'll find out if Johnstone is tomorrow.

On average, keepers get about the same amount of points from saves as they do clean sheets. Mendy does keep CSs, but he doesn't make many saves.

Don’t do 2 x 4.5 strikers! Trust me I’ve done it in previous seasons and it becomes difficult to adapt and fix, one premium and one 6-7.5

Depends if that 6m-7.5m striker can keep pace with 6m-7.5m Def/Mid.

Can’t see any doing that being honest.

I did it for my best spell last season, you've just got to NOT adapt/fix (except on WC) - it's like having a set-and-forget keeper, don't change them after 2/3 GWs of bad scores

Yeah, it's not often the likes of 4-5-1 sustain themselves, but what tends to happen is that the season kicks off and a Benhrama/Antonio lights it up, you don't own and are met with a terrible rank. They then do it once in the second gameweek and there's a tendency to hit the panic button

          1. SADIO SANÉ
            • 8 Years
            1 year, 10 months ago

gotta be disciplined to do it; I didn't get Benrahma because I thought he got lucky/couldn't keep it up; but I also spent that part of the season getting Lukaku/Ronaldo or whatever - gotta admit if Nunez and Haaland both start firing I'd start questioning it because they both might be top-quality

Yeah takes willpower, there’s always a mid priced striker who starts off well that you can hop on and enjoy the points and also price rises.

I don’t think it’s a bad idea further down the line when trends have developed, but to start off with it is too limiting imo

It's not difficult to fix though. With two transfers you can find 2m and upgrade one of them to a 6.5m e.g. Mitro.

Never quite works out that way, for me anyway.

It’s nice to have a general price banding covered in every position so you can hop on bandwagons with no hits

Looks like for best balance it’s no Salah or no Haaland….
Both have an 8/9 mil “cover” option (Diaz/Mahrez/Foden.
This will be the make it break early in the season since we’ll all have 5/10 of the same defence
Thise who go both will lose out elsewhere unless the 5/6 million mids strikers suddenly hit form
      1. Haaland and Diaz
      Or
      2. Salah and Mahrez/Foden

2 just seems much less risky

That's up to you really, isn't it.

I based my opinion on City games I've seen and conclusion is clear - Cancelo is more dangerous when playing on the left.

I don't know how many, what I know is that in the games that he did, he wasn't as dangerous going forward as he is when playing on the left hence should City buy Brighton's LB Cancelo will not be as appealing as he is now.

I'm beginning to believe the minimum price for MID/STR has increased to 5.0m.
Consequently, this is my team so far:

        Lloris
Trent, Van Dijk, Cash, Trippier, Tierney
        Salah, Maddison, Ødegaard
        Kane, Wilson
        (4.5, 5.0, 5.0, 5.0)

Just looked up Haaland on whoscored re bundesliga. Beast at home (18g 3a) in 1000min vs away (4g 4a) in 900min. Could be nailed on captain in the home fixtures for me.

I don’t know if that’s the consensus but it’s probably correct imo. It’s absolutely what they should be doing too. In the same way they released the 2nd FH last season. Their priority has to be engagement. It’s free to play and they had over 9m players (or at least teams) l last season - I guess more this season. They can’t be catering to however many hundreds or thousands are on here.

I don’t subscribe to that narrative. The game is all about expected value. And since last year’s results don’t guarantee this year’s results, some players will be +EV and some will be -EV as the game progresses, even at these prices. The better managers will spot the trends and optimize output (pts) / input (£)

I agree the better managers will rise to the top, that goes without saying. I’m just thinking their trying to make it as user friendly as possible, the vast majority of people wouldn’t stay interested if they couldn’t fill teams with the top 6’s players. It makes sense to make most players affordable from a business sense.

I don’t care what price Son is. If he’s a good value I will have him in my lineup. If he’s not, I won’t.

Not sure yet. I’ll analyze when all prices revealed so I can compare him vs others. Right now I’m not blown away by TOT fixtures to open the season.
Last year he was having the season of his life and was a good value at £11M. Not sure yet how I’ll feel about £12M, but I’m not worrying about things I can’t control atm

The definition of value is relative to price though, so you will care. If he's 12m and players like Bowen, Sterling or Diaz are able to keep pace with him for around 2-3.5m cheaper then his value decreases. The higher the price the harder it is that a player is good value as the need for returns to justify that price become higher and higher

I expect Son to be 12 million. The issue with him is that his hauls are difficult to predict. He gets a lot of his points from counter attacks against better teams, as someone mentioned here earlier. Salah has been more explosive (before losing his form last spring). No Mane could actually be good for Salah also.

I checked his averages in the second half of last season (so under Conte and on the hot form that will have earned him his high price) although I recognise this is a small sample size. I checked him against MCI, LIV, CHE, ARS, NEW & WHU as in my opinion they were the strongest in the second half and then checked him against the other 13.

11.4 average points against top teams
7.0 average points against the 13 weaker teams
9.0 average against just NOR, WAT, LEE as the three weakest defences

Thx. I was referring to your valuable input and checked all the matches afterwards. He was also especially in trouble vs Burnley and Brighton for example. We don't have yet tv to own three premiums and in these circumstances it looks like Salah and Haaland are simply "must haves". They are probably more predictable and in form Salah is on his day more explosive than Son.

Good chance he’s 12. Would be strange if he was cheaper than KDB. Also he only had a couple of attacking returns less than Salah last year.

I’ll probably start with who has the best fixtures. Saka and Mount look best to me atm with unknowns about Foden and Mahrez playing time. Preseason and possible Sterling move may reveal more.
Diaz to me depends on whether I have a Liverpool spot remaining for him, as I may look at first to go with the trusted Salah/TAA/Robbo combo

Lloris probably at 5.0 more value for money. Since every man and his dog will have Salah and TAA and both Robbo (proven) and Diaz are interesting options, Alisson is no go for me.

Best way to spend 16m in defence ?

          A) Cancelo 4.5 4.5 is there 2 viable 4.5m defenders to play week in week out
          B) 6m 5m 5m there is plenty of option in these price points

B will be easier to navigate. But this year, A is plausible, especially if Semedo is out for a bit. Need to see other prices before really considering two 4.5 defenders starting. I have Tomiyasu and Jonny but both have question marks.

For B, James, Tierney, Trippier/Cash sounds good.

What do people think to the theory that there will be no 4.5m midfielders or strikers in the game anymore? Given CDMs in lesser teams, that are always 4.5, have been revealed to be 5.0, and there are no revealed 4.5 mids or forwards… Does it hold water?

I’m not convinced myself. Lesser players are unlikely to be part of the reveals, although I’ll admit the like of Romeu being 5.0, and CDMs from newly promoted clubs being 5.0 is a bit concerning…

            So atm

            4m GK
            4m DF
            4.5 MF
            4.5 FWD

99% of the time, the base price GKpers, DFers and FWDs are providing 1 pointers at best.

However, there's always been a Brownhill/Bissouma/Dendoncker 4.5 base price midfielder or two that obtains 2 points and 90 mins each week, even going so far as to haul with 3 points.

I'm wondering with the 5 sub change and/or emergence of premium defenders that nailed on 2-3 pointer midfielders will now come in at 5, but the young kids that can grab a point here and there with the 5 sub rule will be the ones now to command the 4.5 MID price tags.

It was something I asked earlier. I wouldn't have normally but just the fact that we have seen a 4m def and haven't seen a mid cheaper than 5 or a fwd cheaper than 5.5 is what makes me think it. I think 4.5 mid is still likely but it's the fwds I'm unsure of. Undav, Gelhardt and Muniz are the definition of 5m to me in previous years. Playing for teams that aren't expected to score many goals and/or have a few players ahead of them for 5.5, especially with the cheap prices we've seen in other positions, there's something quite odd about it.

the Romeu thing is weird but maybe they are kinda making the base viable player (ie not complete 1-point turd)
            4.5 DEF
            5.5 MID
            6.5 FWD
certainly makes making a bench harder with 4 / 5 defender formations; which I think might be the actual reason for it

also means someone like Wilson is the equivalent of a 6.5 mid and 5.5 defender, which seems like a fairer comparison; another example is Nunez = Diaz = Cancelo or Toney = Martinelli = Gabriel

I am liking Andy_Social thoughts more and more. Rather a 4.5, 0 pointer rather than paying an additional 1mil for 1 or 2 point turd and have more invested (say 2 to 3 mil) in the playing 11.
