FPL review: Maddison hauls, Ward keeps clean sheet

We round up the key Fantasy Premier League (FPL) talking points from Leicester City v Nottingham Forest in our Scout Notes summary.

The graphics below are taken from LiveFPL and our own Premium Members Area, where you can access Opta player and team data for every single Premier League fixture.

It has been a rotten start to the season for Leicester City, but their campaign is finally up and running after beating rivals Nottingham Forest 4-0 on Monday.

In a much-needed win, James Maddison (£8.0m) was the star of the show, producing 18 points, courtesy of two goals, an assist and maximum bonus.

The playmaker had a lot of joy drifting into central areas from the right, where he was able to find space between the lines. Indeed, he racked up 42 final-third touches – at least 12 more than any player on the pitch – and was outstanding with his use of the ball, creating four chances for his teammates.

Above: James Maddison’s touch heatmap v Nottingham Forest in Gameweek 9

“My strength is being between the lines, so we worked a lot on me being able to pick up on those pockets. I think that’s something I’ve improved on massively tactically. But I can’t just run around wherever I want, the Gaffer allows me freedom but not that much! You can see on my face just how much it means. That first goal was crucial for us.” – James Maddison

Harvey Barnes (£6.9m) and Patson Daka (£5.7m) were also on the scoresheet, with the latter a second-half substitute for Jamie Vardy (£9.2m), who recorded a first-half assist, his first attacking return since Gameweek 4.

Danny Ward (£4.0m), meanwhile, retained his place in goal despite conceding 11 goals in his previous two outings, and repaid his manager’s faith by keeping his first clean sheet of 2022/23. He even managed save/bonus points!

“It’s been too long [since they last won] but I thought we were excellent tonight, with our intensity and pressing in the game. It was a great night for the players and brilliant for the fans. I said if we could get a result tonight then we could push on.

We’ve got a lot of technically gifted players but you can’t win football matches without the desire to win the game. In key moments in other games we haven’t defended well but we have tonight and we’ve kept a clean sheet, which is also very important.” – Brendan Rodgers

Prior to tonight, the Foxes had lost six league games in a row, although five of those were against sides currently in the top six – Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester United, Brighton and Hove Albion and Tottenham Hotspur.

Now, tonight’s win could be a turning point, with a favourable run of fixtures – Bournemouth, Crystal Palace, Leeds United, Wolverhampton Wanderers – coming up.

As for Nottingham Forest, the season started brightly for the Championship play-off winners, but they have now lost five matches in a row, conceding three or more in each of the last four.

They did hit the post through Taiwo Awoniyi (£5.8m) at the King Power, but then conceded three times in a crazy 10-minute period.

Steve Cooper is at least trying to find solutions, moving from his usual 3-4-2-1 formation to a 4-2-3-1 on Monday, but that switch did have implications for budget defender Neco Williams (£4.1m).

As an attacking wing-back, the youngster had produced 15 shots across his first seven appearances, more than any other FPL defender. However, tonight, he was restricted to just four final-third touches, before he was replaced by Serge Aurier (£4.5m) at half-time, having already been booked.

“We are going through difficult moments you normally look at in pre-season and we are having to go through that process in the most difficult league in the world. It’s tough at the moment, I won’t shy away from that.

I’ll believe in them until the end. I will never say they are not good enough as that will have a negative effect. But at the same time we need to be much better.

This is a fresh challenge for us. Some of the guys have only met each other these last couple of weeks. That’s the realism of the situation and something we have to deal with. At the moment we are getting punished because of periods in games where we are not a team and key moments as well.” – Steve Cooper

Leicester City XI: Ward; Castagne, Evans, Faes, Justin; Ndidi (Soumare 45), Tielemans (Praet 80), Dewsbury-Hall; Maddison (Albrighton 85), Barnes, Vardy (Daka 62)

Nottingham Forest XI: Henderson; Williams (Aurier 45), Cook, McKenna, Lodi; Kouyate (Freuler 45), O’Brien (Yates 45); Johnson, Gibbs-White, Lingard (Mangala 69); Awoniyi (Dennis 62)

Will probably have to settle on some GW12 strategy, maybe even bench 3 players and upgrade Emerson before that, 2FTs after the blank could be handy imo

Was doing great — Top of mini leagues. Harry/Hahaland/Jesus coming in again. Martinelli, Salah, Trippier, Everton win away...

Then meh — Maddison (don't own) + ward on bench (Pickford).

Didn't captain Salah, which sums up
Longstaff on the bench, 3 premiums team so there was a possibility I could play him
      Neco on the bench thankfully
      Ward rewards the patience
Not bad overall, OR improved slightly mainly because it was too low already, ~4m

All pretty smooth apart from the Mitro/Toney/Cancelo/James blanks.
Had Maddy since GW1 - good to see him repay the faith with a haul. Bowen in on GW8 WC was good too.
Great to get over 100 pts in a normal game week

Rough: took a hit to replace Cucu with Coufal.
Smooth: 96(-4) for a nice jump from 154k to 88k, Haaland C along with Maddison to go with returns from Kane, Trippier and KDB. The late Fulham goal cost me the 100 with Pope in goal.

Smooth: Ward autosub in for Iversen. Haaland (c) if that counts.

      Rough: the rest of em.

I refused to believe Maddison is only 20% owned - barely seen a team without him in my MLs.

76 points and a 160k red arrow. Could have been worse...

Rough: Five players with binary scores, plus new recruit Zaha blanking. Benched Trippier to play Saliba. Really expected Mitrovic to score and just had an inking Saliba might score against Spurs.

Smooth: Was on Salah(c) until late Thursday when I switched. Thank god I did! Saturday morning very nearly switched back! Haaland(c). Salah, Martinelli and Jesus my only other returns until Monday night. Transfer was to bring Zaha in I had to sell someone so it was either Trippier who I'd only had a week or Saliba. Didn't want to part with either so came up with the plan of moving out Sanchez and bringing in Iversen at 3.9. Started Ward and it worked a treat. I was there for Leicester's clean sheet! So I'm a point up on doing nothing in the end! 961k OR now from 800k. Hopefully can begin to edge up again.

Moment of silence for my main rival (beat me last 3 seasons) who made some weird decisions:

He played 523 with Diaz and Gordon, which meant his entire midfield was benched!

He also benched Foden (19), Saka (2) and Ward (8) while playing Cancelo (1), Perisic (1), Neco (-1) and Pope (2). Oh, and he captained Toney (1) over Haaland (23) 😆

He overestimated Man Utd (even though he's a Chelsea fan) and it cost him dearly. 50 points for the week, dropping from 3.2m to 8.6m, and I finally had a decent lead over him (82pts) for the first time in 3 and a bit seasons.

Crazy week (and a few days late with the reply), but:
Rough - TAA; Mitro blanks; Cancelo 1pt; Pope concedes late to lose clean sheet
Smooth - I would've sworn (and I told mini-league opponents) that I had transferred out Foden for Maddison - which felt bad on Sunday and not so bad on Monday; I didn't check my team on Sunday (busy and Saturday was sooo rough) but late Saturday I was way below the average score and didn't want more bad news; suffice to say that I had moved Dewsbury-Hall to Maddison - so I got the Foden & Haaland hatties; along with the Maddison haul. 107 pts and up 300K to 87K overall. Was a surprise when I checked my phone on Tuesday morning and saw Foden in and that weekly score. Also moved into the top position in the mini-league, which is always nice. LOL

Hello people! Early thoughts? A bit clueless on what to do here with 2FTs, need to make a transfer...

    Iversen
    Cancelo, James, Trippier, Guéhi
    Foden, Maddison, Bowen, Martinelli
    Haaland(C), Kane

    Subs: Pope, Andreas, Emerson, Mitrović

    A. Mitrović to Martial or very reluctantly Solanke
    B. other suggestions?

I probably would tbh. Also depends on your GW12 strategy with 6 Arsenal/City.
I like the WC team. Guehi over Mings.

I have Isak and Mitro too. Can't find much on Mitro at all, hoping he will be ok.

Isak isn't looking so good but you never know what to believe
      "What’s been said?
Howe said: “The scan doesn’t look too bad, so we’re not overly concerned it’s a long injury but with any muscle injury, there’s always a slight period where you have to be careful.

“He’s out running on grass so he’s looking good at the moment.”

      Potential return date
How long Isak is out for exactly is unconfirmed, although some reports did suggest he could be sidelined for up to three weeks."

2ft 0.0itb. Of course below depends on Mitro and Isak injuries.

    Pope Ward
    Cancelo James Trippier (Justin, Neco)
    KDB Martinelli Bowen Maddison (Andreas)
    Haaland MITRO* ISAK*

Pretty good team but I would like to get rid of Neco and either or both of Isak and Mitro. However 0itb means I cannot do any move really with 1ft.

    1. Pope to Guaita to raise money. Y/n?
    2. Other downgrade, dont really see one this week?

    For example
    A) Pope, Isak/Mitro > Guaita, Watkins (target NFO)
    B) A but Toney in.
    C) A but Wilson in.
    D) else

Just watched the highlights from yesterday's game.
    I'm currently on wildcard.
Highlights gave me that feeling Maddison won't be getting those kind of outcome every week. First goal deflected, assist on daka's goal thanks to a mint Daka's inspiration.
Not that I want to put me off Maddison but was his overall game, body language, attacking threat great during the game or was it a "lucky outcome" ?
    thanks for your input !

  27. rnrd

    Hi
people on WC, what is your selected back 5?
I'm having a tough time picking them as not only because the premium ones are under-performing and have blanks but also because of the very congested shedule for some good high ceiling assets.

    - TAA / Robbo. Currently not in the balance as underperforming although a route to them in 13 has to be kept in my opinion as Jota might iprove a lot TAA/robbo and Salah. TAA needs a great Salah and Jota for his attacking threat imo
    - Cancelo: a great game against SOU (if not rested, let's keep an eye on UCL line ups) then a game at Liverpool and a blank.. The option to go without him until GW13 is sensible I think. Close to a must have from 13 to 16 though
    - Reece: big question mark. On 4 yellows. Still waiting to see him perform as a RB. Chelsea with a big schedule ahead and injury prone.
    - Perisic: plays as an offensive mid when... playing. Big Schedule ahead for spurs too. Worth the gamble?
    - Trippier: a lock on WC

are there any maverick / value options you are looking at? James Justin? Chilwell as a punt? Doherty?

    1. Boberella
      • 7 Years
      1 year, 7 months ago

On a WC, it would be Cancelo Trippier James back 3 with a 4.0 bench and Guehi/Andersen

      1. Boberella
        • 7 Years
        1 year, 7 months ago

(Cancelo will score big over the season set and forget, Trippier a must, James can be easily moved on if banned/injured, but due a big score soon.
Perisic not worth the rotation minutes, Liverpool not proved themselves yet and not earning their price tags for the upgrades in mid it gives you)
