Rashford v Fernandes: Who is the best pick for FPL 2023/24?

Manchester United’s Marcus Rashford has climbed from £6.5m to £9.0m in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) after recording a career-high haul of 205 points in 2022/23.

It means he now costs half a million more than Bruno Fernandes, who has dropped from £10.0m at the start of last season to £8.5m.

One hot topic our the comments section is over which Man Utd midfielder to buy, which we’ll investigate in this latest Premium Members article.

We’re using our Comparison Tool to help run the rule over the pros and cons of Rashford and Fernandes.

Rashford scored 17 Premier League goals in 2022/23 – a tally beaten only by Mohamed Salah among FPL midfielders – and was in a league of his own for goal threat compared to Fernandes.

The England international registered a shot in the box and expected goal (xG) at roughly twice the speed, with just over half of Fernandes’ efforts taken from outside of the area.

It’s also worth noting Fernandes’ xG figure is boosted by two penalties (more on that below). His rate of non-penalty xG last season is one every 427 minutes, compared to 355 when spot-kicks are included.

Above: Rashford (left) and Fernandes’ (right) xG shots 2022/23

Rashford’s form did drop off towards the end of the season, as he scored just three goals in his last 11 Premier League appearances from Gameweek 26 onwards.

Still, the Man Utd team as a whole generally looked more tired, as they continued to play midweek matches without reprieve.

It’s important to keep this in mind, as Rashford was still his side’s biggest goal threat during that period, leading in all of the key goal threat metrics, from shots in the box to big chances to xG.

    I’m backing BrunoF…

    Verbruggen
    Gabriel / Porro / Tete
    Salah / Saka / BrunoF / Mbuemo / Gross
    Haaland / Mitrovic

    Areola / Henry / Baldock / 4.5

    Front 7 all on penalties.

Tete / Henry rotation is sweet.

Mitrovic misses more than he scores

Yeah it will be the Brighton goalie.

Mitro for the start. I want to see Nkunku first.

I'd say 0.5. Also Saliba might be a better choice than Gabriel.

Gabriel for me due to fixtures. United play Spurs, Arsenal and Brighton in the first 5 GWs.

I think Bruno is reasonably priced, maybe a little expensive, but I think Rashford is a steal at 9 mil. Probably worth 10 mil with the season he had.

Bruno capable of a 250 point season, Rash has never got close to that

Bruno only capable of that because of that nonsense VAR season with penalties.
        After that it’s 176, and 151.
Rashford has hit 170 plus twice before, and did so without a striker helping occupy last season. Nothing to say he won’t continue to improve.

Good article. I'm leaning towards Rashford at the moment but it wouldn't take much for me to be swayed to Fernandes. If an urgent need for 0.5m arises Rash to Bruno is a downgrade I would be comfortable with.

    Leno (Raya)
    Saliba-Estupinan-Shaw (Mings-Botman)
    Mbeumo-Odegaard-Rashford-Saka-Mitoma
    Haaland-Ndiaye (Nkunku)

Any thoughts on this team? Should I make some cuts/downgrades to save some money in the bank?

When choosing fodders do you pick the most owned one or the least owned one? I'm thinking least owned one because then he won't drop in price due to selling.

Neither, just the one I think is the best.
People think least owned is better for protection - it isn’t. It makes it riskier as it takes less people to remove before a price drop happens.

The rises/falls are percentage based so I don't think it makes a difference either way.

It's better to go for the one most likely to get the most points, because when they WCs come around, those are the ones that'll get picked up as fodder.

Most owned is actually better to protect against price drops. Under a certain % ownership it just turns into a flat transfers out figure for a drop... and that flat rate isn't particually high.

    Hiya Everybody!
Langerz'n'Mash is back for a sixth season on FFS.

Seems to have started early this year and once again some bonkers player prices.

    Here's my starting draft,

    Pickford
    Saliba, Estupinan, Botman
    KdB, Son, Saka, BrunoFernandes, Mbeumo
    Haaland(C), Darwin
    (Forster, Lamptey, Beyer, Semenyo)

Not looked at anything in any detail yet but I'm assuming I already have a few template picks based solely on the pricing.

Lukaku needs to get fit. He isn't looking lean.

But he would be an interesting foil for Nkunku in a 4-2-3-1. But that defence does not look good enough to play a back four. No natural holding midfielder either (yet). It also kills a lot of what makes Chilwell and James good (i.e., their attacking threat).

anyone else a little iffy on bruno's role right off the bat with mount coming in? love bruno, love man united and thinkthey're gonna be great, but not sure bruno is a great pick off the bat as they adjust to each other?

A little. But also if a new striker comes in, he may lose pens. Just a couple of minor marks against him but make me prefer a Rashford/Saka/Odegaard/Martinelli.

Playing as an 8 with Mount does ease the creative burden on him.

      1. Zimo
        • 5 Years

He's not losing pens unless the striker is Kane.

granted yes on pens, but I'm more referring to a deeper role, less attacking, etc. he's so versatile, I could see eth moving him around to see how it fits together. that said, im itching to start with the bruno/rashford combo

          1. Piggs Boson
            • 12 Years
            10 months, 27 days ago

Yeah, he excelled in that deeper role last season, progressing the ball from the defence in the build-up. Alongside Mount, you'd think Bruno would be the one to drop in transition and launch long balls on the counter.

But once the attack is fully developed he'll still be in and around the box. And Mount may give him more space to operate... Could still get some big scores.

It's tough, but given FPL has such a chaotic landscape, I'd rather stick with certainties like Saka, Rashford etc than go for Bruno with a couple of small question marks.

          • 12 Years

Yeah, probably. We'll have to wait and see what happens in the window. But even with pens, those 4 players above vastly outscored him, and had better expected data.

            true, right now im on:

            taa, gabriel, shaw, estup
            bruno, rash, saka, mitoma, mbuemo
            haaland

I like all the picks, but have my doubts about the structure. Ferguson is a lot of money on the bench. I'd rather pump that into the XI.

Reminds me of chess, where it's important to develop all your pieces on the back row and get them affecting the game as soon as possible. I see it the same with our FPL budgets.

I like the 352 this year. We don't have a plethora of attacking defenders anymore, the points seem to be in the midfield.

Hmm not sure what you're taking about. If you owned him and he was scoring every game, then that's quite good! He's been playing through injury with injections each game (during his best period). He's since had an operation and understandably struggled to get back into an excellent Arsenal team while getting back to fitness and form. He's looking great for England U21s right now and could definitely play a part next season at Arsenal. There's a lot in the air now, especially with 3 big signings, potentially.

Havertz is versatile so a threat to all attackers' mins (E.g. could play CF and push Jesus into Saka's position). But I'm willing to assume for now that he'll mostly play left-8, and otherwise, everyone is about equally at risk for mins.

No because as it's been explained above Martinelli is far more likely to be rotated for ESR or Trossard. No one in that Arsenal squad can do what Saka or Odegaard can do in that team so they will be less prone to said chances of rotation.

Wrong, its been explained that he doesn't get rotated just subbed off earlier. He's the most direct/greedy of the lot and as we can see from last season scores very similarly and is cheaper.

No it was explained to you that ESR wasn't a factor in said rotation as he was injured. Trossard played mainly up front when he was bought in Jan as Jesus was injured. He then proceeded to share minutes with Martinelli on the left. Both will now, this season, start some games on the left leaving Martinelli to be the one to come on, on the 70th minute.

What I don't understand is why people like you ask a question and then get annoyed when people that clearly know more, such as the Arsenal fan above, try to explain stuff to you.

No need to start getting personal/saying people like you etc, we're just discussing fantasy football. As far as i can see everyone is in agreement that Martinelli is very much first choice and the most attacking, evidence from last season indicates he will score a very similar amount of points to Saka/Odegaard and using the 0.5 saved to upgrade elsewhere could result in more points overall. There will be more rotation throughout the Arsenal team as the squad improves and when Jesus gets injured again.

Martinelli may still get starts on PL games and those two other more time in CL. We don't know yet for sure.

Even when ESR wasn't injured he wasn't a factor, Martinelli started every time, got all his points and was subbed when the game was won.

They're not in agreement though. Trossard was bought in January, ESR was splitting minutes on the left with Martinelli the season before last and was injured last season.

You just seem to be hellbent on not having a discussion but just ignoring what everyone on here says to you, not just here but in other posts, and then regurgitating your own opinion regardless.

Why even bother posting a question at all if you've already decided your own answer is correct, it's a waste of everyone else's time.

I don't think anything has changed between Martinelli and Trossard. Martinelli is more attacking than Øde, so he doesn't need as much time to score.

I'd get Martinelli if they would've priced Saka a bit higher. With these prices Saka is a no-brainer imo.

The question is not about Saka. Of course everyone will have him. But whether to have Marti or Øde with him if not both.

Really depends how key Toney was to their attack for a Brentford double up and doubly so losing both Caicedo and McAllister for a Brighton defensive double up.

Have you unearthed a secret 4.5 mid in Ebiowei that may get games?

        1. Athletic Nasherbo
          • 7 Years
          10 months, 27 days ago

I think for the short-term, Brentford will be fine as they’ve shown previously whenever Toney has been injured or when he got banned.

Veltman wont be relied on passed Gameweek 1, hopefully.

No, nothing in terms of Ebiowei. He was promising last pre-season, then made the occasional sub appearance and then completely disappeared. Wouldn’t be surprised if he became a gem, though.

You have two keepers with away games in GW3-4. I'd look at a better combo. Also Areola might start over Fabianski.

I’m starting Ferguson up top, largely as I’m Irish and want to keep an eye on our best prospect for years, but his numbers are also very good as are his opening fixtures. If he has a good preseason I can see momentum building around him, bigly.

First crack at a draft, not sure I want to go without Salah, can imagine all the YouTube crowd scrambling to get him after he hauls in the first weeks...

      Pickford,
      Gabriel, Estupinan, James
      Saka, Mitoma, Salah, Bruno
      (H)aaland, Jesus, Pedro

      (Areola, Bell, Beyer, 4.5 mid)

      0ITB

Any thoughts on if Pedro is actually a viable option? Otherwise might go for Ferguson over Pedro, and a 5.0 instead of James.

      Cheers!

I started with B but my budget feels more 'optimised' with Salah, by which I mean I feel like every 0.5 is pulling its weight, if that makes any sense. (It's too easy to make a good team with B so can end up with more luxury players or an unnecessarily expensive bench.)
