Line-up Lessons – Gameweek 34 – Part Two

Paul Pogba is hauled off before the hour-mark while Jesse Lingard starts on the bench in the first match of Man United’s Double Gameweek 34.

Erik Lamela is preferred to Son Heung-min on the teamsheet for Spurs’ home encounter with Man City, as Nicolas Otamendi is handed a surprise rest at Wembley.

Elsewhere, Charlie Austin is restricted to a late cameo as Southampton start the first of a pair of Double Gameweeks with a narrow home loss to Chelsea.

After assessing the first ten teams yesterday, we turn to part two of Line-up Lessons, checking out the teamsheets and formations from the Gameweek 34 encounters, with one eye on what’s to come from the midweek league matches, weekend FA Cup fixtures and beyond.

Manchester City

Starting XI: Ederson; Walker, Kompany, Laporte, Delph; Gundogan, Silva, De Bruyne (Toure 89), Sane (Otamendi 64), Sterling; Jesus (Bernardo Silva 76). Subs not used: Bravo, Zinchenko, Foden, Brahim Diaz.

  • What we saw: Pep Guardiola named a strong side for the trip to Wembley Stadium just four days after bowing out of the UEFA Champions League. Ilkay Gundogan stood in for the suspended Fernandinho in central midfield, while with Sergio Aguero injured, Gabriel Jesus started as the central striker in the usual 4-3-3 formation. Vincent Kompany and Aymeric Laporte formed the centre-back partnership, with Nicolas Otamendi dropping to the bench. City ended the match in more of a 5-4-1 formation, with Otamendi brought on in central defence. Fellow substitute Bernardo Silva played on the right side of midfield, with Kevin De Bruyne positioned on the left. Raheem Sterling operated as the lone striker.
  • What we learned: With the title now secured, Guardiola is expected to utilise all of City’s squad for the remainder of the campaign, based on his previous history at both Barcelona and Bayern Munich when league titles had been wrapped up. But against Swansea City on Sunday, he should name a strong side as City celebrate in front of their own fans, and out of respect to the other teams battling to avoid relegation. Otamendi is likely to return in central defence, most likely in place of Laporte, but with Fernandinho still suspended, the three-man midfield is expected to remain unchanged. Bernardo Silva provides a possible alternative out wide, but with Aguero now potentially out for the final month of the season with a knee injury, Jesus is now in pole position to lead the attack unchallenged.

Current Status: Fairly Settled
Risk Areas: Central defenders, left-back, flanks

Manchester United

Starting XI: De Gea; Valencia, Smalling, Lindelof, Young (Rashford 75); Matic, Herrera (Lingard 46); Mata, Pogba (Martial 59), Sanchez; Lukaku. Subs not used: Jones, Rojo, McTominay, Joel Pereira.

  • What we saw: Despite facing bottom side West Bromwich Albion at Old Trafford, Jose Mourinho decided to stick with the 4-3-3 formation he used in the 3-2 win over Man City. He did make two changes, though, with Victor Lindelof preferred to Eric Bailly in central defence, while Juan Mata replaced Jesse Lingard on the right of the front three. But following a disappointing first-half display, Mourinho switched to a more attacking 4-2-3-1, with Lingard taking up a No 10 role. Shortly before the hour mark, Anthony Martial was introduced for Paul Pogba, with the former positioned out wide on the left. That allowed Alexis Sanchez to play centrally alongside Romelu Lukaku in more of a 4-1-3-2 system. After falling a goal behind, Mourinho threw caution to the wind, bringing on Marcus Rashford for Ashley Young, leaving just Chris Smalling, Lindelof and Nemanja Matic as defensive-minded players, with Antonio Valencia covering the right side of the pitch.
  • What we learned: With Wednesday’s trip to Bournemouth coming just three days before the FA Cup semi-final with Spurs, Mourinho has hinted that he will rotate at the Vitality Stadium. Bailly, Phil Jones and Marcos Rojo are options in central defence, while the Argentine could also feature at left-back in place of Young. The United boss may start with a 4-2-3-1 against the Cherries, so Herrera could drop to the bench, although Pogba may also be handed a rest. The likes of Scott McTominay and Marouane Fellaini could provide fresh legs in the middle of the park. Lingard, Martial and Rashford are all options to in the attacking midfield spots, with Mata set to drop out of the starting XI.

Current Status: Unsettled
Risk Areas: Central defenders, left-back, central midfield, flanks, attacking midfield

Newcastle United

Starting XI: Dubravka; Yedlin, Lejeune, Lascelles, Dummett; Ritchie (Murphy 85), Diame, Shelvey, Kenedy; Perez (Joselu 79); Gayle (Slimani 63). Subs not used: Darlow, Clark, Hayden, Manquillo.

  • What we saw: Unsurprisingly, Rafa Benitez once again named an unchanged starting X1 for the home encounter against Arsenal, with the Magpies lining up in the usual 4-4-1-1 system.
  • What we learned: Following a fourth successive victory, Benitez may again stick with the same starting line-up for the trip to Everton on Monday night. However, Islam Slimani made an impact after coming on as a substitute against the Gunners, and provides a different option to Dwight Gayle in the lone striker role. Jacob Murphy and Christian Atsu offer alternatives out wide, but appear unlikely starters.

Current Status: Very Settled
Risk Areas: Lone Striker

Southampton

Starting XI: McCarthy; Bednarek (Gabbiadini 90), Yoshida, Hoedt; Cedric Soares, Romeu, Hojbjerg, Bertrand; Ward-Prowse (Austin 79), Tadic (Sims 83); Long. Subs not used: Lemina, Boufal, McQueen, Forster.

  • What we saw: Mark Hughes stuck with the 3-4-2-1 formation that yielded an improved performance in the 3-2 defeat to Arsenal for the visit of Chelsea to St Mary’s. Jan Bednarek was handed his Premier League debut in place of the suspended Jack Stephens as part of the three-man backline in the only change for Saints. After falling 3-2 behind, Hughes decided to introduce Charlie Austin for James Ward-Prowse, bringing a change to more of a 3-4-3. Substitute Josh Sims and Shane Long operated either side of central striker Austin. Manolo Gabbiadini was sent on as a final roll of the dice during stoppage time.
  • What we learned: Given that Southampton played so well for the first hour against Chelsea, Hughes may keep faith in the majority of the same starting XI for Thursday night’s trip to Leicester City. Austin is the player most likely to edge his way into the line-up, although if the Saints boss sticks with a 3-4-2-1, he could again miss out with Long preferred for his mobility. A switch to either a 3-5-2 or 4-4-2 may see both forwards combine up front. The starts of James Ward-Prowse and/or Bednarek appear the most at risk should there be a change in system. Mario Lemina provides the main alternative in central midfield should Hughes look to inject some fresh legs, while Sims and Sofiane Boufal offer different options out wide. Their FA Cup semi-final against Chelsea follows three days after the trip to the King Power Stadium, but given their position in the table, Hughes will surely have to name his strongest possible side against the Foxes.

Current Status: Fairly Settled
Risk Areas: Central defenders, attacking midfield, forwards

Stoke City

Starting XI: Butland; Zouma, Shawcross, Martins Indi, Pieters; Bauer (Crouch 70), Allen, Ndiaye, Sobhi (Cameron 61); Shaqiri; Diouf (Ireland 87). Subs not used: Grant, Sorensen, Fletcher, Campbell.

  • What we saw: Paul Lambert was forced into making one change for the trip to West Ham United, with Kurt Zouma replacing Glen Johnson, who missed out due to a groin injury. The Chelsea loanee slotted in at right-back, while Moritz Bauer continued on the right side of midfield in the same 4-4-1-1 formation. The Stoke boss decided to switch to a more attacking 4-2-3-1 on the hour mark, introducing Geoff Cameron for Ramadan Sobhi. Cameron sat next to Badou Ndiaye at the base of midfield, freeing up Joe Allen to play in the No 10 role. Xherdan Shaqiri operated down the right, with Bauer moving to the opposite flank. Peter Crouch was then brought on to lead the line, with Mame Biram Diouf moving out on to the left wing.
  • What we learned: After scoring as a substitute, Crouch could push for a start when the Potters host Burnley on Sunday. But if Lambert only plays with a lone striker, Diouf may be deployed out wide, depending on the selected formation. With the matches rapidly running out for Stoke, it could be that Lambert opts for a 4-2-3-1 from the start, with Diouf and Shaqiri out wide, and Allen in the No 10 role. That would probably see Bauer return to right-back at the expense of Zouma, with Cameron then likely to start at the base of midfield. Alternatively, the same 4-4-1-1 may see fewer changes, with Diouf and Crouch battling it out for one spot up front.

Current Status: Slightly Unsettled
Risk Areas: Right-back, central midfield, flanks, attacking midfield, lone striker

Swansea City

Starting XI: Fabianski; Naughton, Fernandez, Mawson, Olsson; Ki Sung-yueng (Abraham 65), King, Carroll; Narsingh (Dyer 46), A Ayew, J Ayew. Subs not used: Nordfeldt; van der Hoorn, Routledge, Bartley, Roberts.

  • What we saw: The return of Jordan Ayew following a three-match ban saw Carlos Carvalhal switch to a flexible 3-5-2 system. Jordan joined brother Andre up front, while Ki Sung-yueng returned in central midfield, with Sam Clucas missing out due to a knock to his knee picked up in training. Kyle Naughton started as the right-sided centre-back, with Luciano Narsingh stationed at right wing-back. The Dutchman was handed more freedom to push forward than Martin Olsson on the opposite flank, though, with Naughton at times moving across to right-back. Narsingh had to be replaced at half-time after twisting his ankle, however, seeing Nathan Dyer come on in a straight swap. The introduction of Tammy Abraham for Ki saw Carvalhal switch to a 3-4-1-2 formation, with Andre Ayew stationed in a No 10 role behind Jordan Ayew and Abraham up front.
  • What we learned: Even if Narsingh is passed fit for Sunday’s trip to Man City, it’s unlikely he’ll be named in the starting XI, with Carvalhal set to switch back to a more defensive 5-4-1 or 5-3-2 formation. So providing he is fully fit following a shoulder problem, Mike van der Hoorn (who was on the bench at the weekend) is likely to return in central defence, with Naughton moving to right-back. Tom Carroll may be favoured over Ki in central midfield in a 5-4-1, providing Clucas is fit to start on the left wing as expected. But in a 5-3-2, Ki and Carroll could both start in the middle of the park.

Current Status: Fairly Settled
Risk Areas: Central defenders, right-back, central midfield, left wing

Tottenham Hotspur

Starting XI: Lloris; Trippier, Sanchez, Vertonghen, Davies; Dier, Dembele (Moura 73); Lamela (Son Heung-min 64), Eriksen, Alli (Sissoko 84); Kane. Subs not used: Vorm, Aurier, Wanyama, Sterling.

  • What we saw: Mauricio Pochettino decided to name something close to his strongest side for the home clash against Manchester City. Kieran Trippier, Ben Davies and Eric Dier all returned to the starting XI after being rested for the 2-1 victory over Stoke City. The one slight surprise was Erik Lamela being preferred to Son Heung-min in the attacking midfield spots. The Argentine was stationed on the right wing, with Dele Alli on the left and Christian Eriksen in the No 10 role. With his side trailing 3-1, Pochettino decided to switch to more of a 4-1-4-1 system, with substitutes Son, Lucas Moura and Moussa Sissoko joining Eriksen behind lone striker Harry Kane.
  • What we learned: Spurs face a short turnaround before tonight’s trip to Brighton & Hove Albion, which comes four days before their FA Cup semi-final against Man United. It’s then a long break until they host Watford in Gameweek 36 on April 30. Son is expected to replace Lamela in the starting XI, while should Pochettino look to inject further fresh legs, the likes of Sissoko and Lucas may also be considered for starts in the attacking midfield positions. The Spurs boss has suggested that Lucas and Fernando Llorente, who missed out last weekend due to personal reasons, will both be involved. Victor Wanyama is a possible alternative at the base of midfield in the usual 4-2-3-1 formation, while in defence, Serge Aurier is in line to start at right-back. Danny Rose is said to be progressing well following a calf problem, but won’t feature. Kyle Walker-Peters is fit-again, though, and could be an option at left-back if the Spurs boss wants to rest Ben Davies. Pochettino has also reportedly started that Toby Alderweireld will be in the squad at Brighton. If the Belgian centre-half is handed a start, Jan Vertonghen may also be an option at left-back, while Davinson Sanchez may be a slight rotation risk.

Current Status: Slightly Unsettled
Risk Areas: Defence, central midfield, flanks, attacking midfield

Watford

Starting XI: Karnezis; Mariappa, Prodl, Cathcart, Janmaat; Capoue, Doucoure; Femenia (Richarlison 58), Hughes (Sinclair 90), Pereyra; Deeney (Gray 81). Subs not used: Gomes, Britos, Kabasele, Okaka.

  • What we saw: Javi Gracia only made one change from the side that lost 2-1 to Burnley for the trip to Huddersfield Town, with Craig Cathcart coming in for the injured Jose Holebas. Cathcart partnered Sebastian Prodl in central defence, with Adrian Mariappa moving to left-back in the usual 4-2-3-1 formation.
  • What we learned: Holebas will be assessed ahead of Saturday’s home fixture against Crystal Palace after missing out last weekend. Should he remain sidelined, Miguel Britos and the fit-again Christian Kabasele provide the main alternatives in defence. After being withdrawn just before the hour mark, Kiko Femenia’s start on the right wing could come under threat. Richarlison may earn a recall in that position, potentially leaving Femenia and Daryl Janmaat to battle it out for the starting spot at right-back.

Current Status: Fairly Settled
Risk Areas: Defence, right wing

West Bromwich Albion

Starting XI: Foster; Nyom, Dawson, Hegazi, Gibbs; Phillips (Krychowiak 81), Livermore, Brunt (Yacob 90), McClean; Rodriguez; Rondon (Sturridge 85). Subs not used: Myhill, Gabr, Burke, Field.

  • What we saw: Caretaker manager Darren Moore named the same side that drew 1-1 against Swansea City for the trip to Man United, although the Baggies lined up in a 4-4-1-1 system at Old Trafford, with Jay Rodriguez stationed in a support striker role. Moore introduced Grzegorz Krychowiak late on to help shore up the central midfield area, with Rodriguez moving out to the right wing in a 4-5-1 formation.
  • What we learned: Following the shock 1-0 victory on Sunday, Moore may well name the same side once again for Saturday’s home encounter against Liverpool. While Daniel Sturridge returned from injury as a late substitute, the on-loan forward is now ineligible to face his parent club. The fit-again Sam Field was named among the substitutes at Old Trafford, but he, along with Krychowiak, will struggle to force their way back into the starting XI. Nacer Chadli could be ready to return to the bench this weekend, but Jonny Evans (knee) remains doubtful. If fit, the centre-back is the player most likely to push for a recall, though.

Current Status: Very Settled
Risk Areas: Central defenders

West Ham United

Starting XI: Hart; Rice, Ogbonna, Cresswell; Zabaleta, Kouyate, Noble, Masuaku (Lanzini 81); Fernandes (Chicharito 76), Arnautovic, Joao Mario (Carroll 86). Subs not used: Hugill, Adrian, Eva, Cullen.

  • What we saw: David Moyes decided to name the same side that drew 1-1 with Chelsea for the home clash against Stoke. Aaron Cresswell recovered from a knock to start on the left of the back three in the same 3-4-2-1 system. With the match goalless, Moyes firstly decided to bring on Chicharito for Edimilson Fernandes, prompting a switch to a 3-4-1-2, with the Mexican joining Marko Arnautovic up front, leaving Joao Mario in the No 10 role. Then after falling a goal behind, the returning Manuel Lanzini was brought on for Arthur Masuaku, before Andy Carroll entered the fray in place of Joao Mario. That saw the Hammers end the match in an attacking 4-2-1-3, with Lanzini in the No 10 position behind a front three of Arnautovic, Carroll and Chicharito.
  • What we learned: The Hammers face a trip to Arsenal next on Sunday and Carroll’s late equaliser provides some food for thought for Moyes. The striker, along with Lanzini, may be short of match sharpness but will still be in Moyes’ plans with the latter the favourite to earn a start. Should Carroll also get the nod, we may see Arnautovic moved to a support role alongside Lanzini. The rest of the line-up looks settled, with a three-man backline clearly now the preferred system.

Current Status: Settled
Risk Areas: Attacking midfield, forwards

It wasn’t the best DGW to be fair and it was basically between him and Payet as West Ham was the best double by FAR.

Carroll was In a vein on form.

Personally I was chasing so going Carroll over Payet was a no brainer. He ended up getting booked in the second game after missing a one on one. What could have been. Lost ML by 2 points in the end.

Reports that Agüero could miss the rest of the season have increased the buzz around Jesus as a pick. Even so, he's not exactly being described as 'essential', a term that was bandied about by some when a Jesus injury gave Agüero a run of eight consecutive starts from GW22-GW29.

In that period, the Argentine managed 9 goals and 2 assists, averaging exactly 8 Points Per Game (PPG). Notably, he hit a hat-trick in GW24 at home to Newcastle, and four goals at home to Leicester in GW27, and both hauls gave huge green arrows to those that captained him.

It's fair to say that Jesus hasn't been an equally explosive fantasy asset this season. Whereas Agüero leads all Forwards on 6.8 PPG, Jesus has managed only 4.2 PPG. Part of that is due to game-time, with Jesus being brought as a sub in 38% of his appearances, whilst Agüero has only come off the bench in 12% of his games.

However, Agüero also leads the way in Points Per Start (PPS), with 7.6 PPS to Jesus's 5.7. In five of Jesus's starts, Agüero partnered him up front, and outscored him by 42 points (8.4 PPG) to 25 (5.0 PPG). That's hardly surprising, given that those matches largely saw Jesus relegated to a role on the flank, with Agüero playing as the main striker.

In the 10 games this season that Jesus started without Agüero, though, he managed 6 goals, 3 assists, and 60 points (6.0 PPG), blanking on just three occasions, which is a more encouraging return, although it still falls short of Agüero's 7.4 PPG when starting without Jesus. It doesn't quite seem a fair comparison, though, given that an incredible 9 of the 10 league matches where Jesus has started without Agüero have been away from home.

City have averaged nearly a goal a game more in home matches (3.31 goals per game) than away (2.35 goals per game) in the league this season and have a plum home fixture in GW35 (SWA), as well as two more in GW37 (HUD/BHA). Jesus may not seem like as strong an option as a nailed-on Agüero, based on past performances, but it appears that the stars could be aligning for him to thrive over the season run-in.

In fact, Jesus has shown great consistency by not blanking in any of the seven home games where he's started for City without Agüero:

      2017/18:
Premier League - Stoke (2 goals)
Champions League - Napoli (1 goal), FC Basel (1 goal), Liverpool (1 goal)

      2016/17:
Premier League - Swansea (2 goals), Crystal Palace (1 assist), Leicester (1 goal)

As for explosiveness, Jesus's two highest FPL scores (both 13) in his 34 league appearances have come in the four home games in the league where he's started without Agüero. I’m not saying that you should treat a nailed-on Jesus like you would a nailed-on Agüero just yet, but there are strong reasons to believe he can take his fantasy performance to another level over the remaining gameweeks.

Is a good option, but not a great one. Had it been Jesus who was injured and Kun fit, there won't be a debate whether to bring Aguero in but Jesus is not as prolific in comparison.

Haha, fair point. I'm saying that I think he could be close to must-have status, and if he starts both home games in GW37, then he's quite possibly a better Triple Captaincy candidate than Kane is, which I don't think has been most people's thinking.

Everyone agrees he's a good option, but the response has been a long way off what it would have been if it was Agüero that became nailed-on.

Nice analysis as ever Ludo, had already been quietly wondering whether Jesus is my man for the run in. I'm freehitting in GW35 so my next transfer is in GW36 and I'm planning to ditch Lukaku.

Original plan was always to get Kane (WAT, wba/NEW, LEI) for a hit but I could actually get Jesus (whu, HUD/BRI, sot) for free. That Jesus DGW is pretty mouthwatering if he starts both...

I could get both for a -8 but given that Vardy would have to make way I'm not sure it's worth it. Hmm...

Really nice summary as ever - Jesus has been atop my forward watchlist for a while, and will certainly be coming in post-Free Hit as part of a Kane-Auba-Jesus frontline. I'm surprised the public consensus wasn't equally high on him to be honest - he seems like an absolute no-brainer for run-in.

Thankfully, Alonso has helped my efforts to find the necessary funds enormously...

Just a little more context to the point that Jesus has averaged 6.0 Points Per Start without Agüero, and Agüero has averaged 7.4 PPS without Jesus...

As I said, 9 of the 10 games Jesus started without Agüero were away, but it's also worth noting that 11 of the 17 games Agüero started without Jesus were at home.

In the 10 games Jesus started without Agüero, Man City scored 20 goals (2.0 per game), and Jesus picked up 6 goals and 3 FPL assists, or a 45% involvement.

In the 17 games Agüero started without Jesus, Man City scored 50 goals (2.9 per game), and Agüero managed 16 goals and 4 FPL assists, or a 40% involvement.

Of course, it's possible that Man City just score fewer goals without Agüero in the team, but it looks like fixtures might have been a significant factor. Jesus actually had a higher level of involvement than Agüero as the lone striker, and so he may well profit from a stronger run of fixtures in that role.

I'd really like him just not sure how I fit him in right now without going big up top (which could be an option.

Kane - Vardy - Barnes is who I have right now. Earmarked J.Ayew currently to replace Barnes and maybe switch to a 3-4-3 (on 3-5-2 right now)

Will Jesus start all the remaining games? We saw B.Silva/Sterling play up front vs Man United.

I don't really have worries over Kane and Vardy not starting. Not sure I'd be as confident with Jesus (but you would imagine he'll start all but 1 I suppose at the worst)

City won at Old Trafford with Sterling up front (and Jesus on the left) earlier in the season, so it's no surprise they tried repeating the trick in the GW32 reverse fixture. I think that was a one-off tactical adjustment against a key rival, rather than a sign of things to come.

The only other times they've played Sterling or Bernardo Silva through the middle this season have been in the League Cup, against Cardiff and Bristol City, but I don't think it's been a great success.

Jesus has only played 2,220 minutes in all competitions this season, which is the equivalent of less than 25 ninety minute matches, meaning he has plenty left in the tank.

He's also the firm favourite ahead of Firmino to start as Brazil's centre forward in the World Cup, but I think he'll be chomping at the bit for Pep to give him a run of starts over the rest of the season.

My only concern would be if Agüero comes back before the end of the season.

Excellent analysis. You've looked at points per start, but it's also worth looking at points per 90 mins since Jesus has often done well coming on as a sub and is often hauled off early, which is less likely to be the case now with Aguero out and Man City not in any other competition.

          Jesus points per 90 mins:
          2017/18: 7.06
          2016/17: 9.26

          Aguero points per 90 mins:
          2017/18: 7.76
          2016/17: 6.55

The gap narrows even more between them when looking at this metric (although admittedly the numbers can be skewed by 1 point cameos). When you also consider that this season Aguero has missed out on playing the difficult fixtures Spurs, Chelsea and United away (which would have brought down his average), whereas Jesus has missed easier home fixtures to Palace, Bournemouth, Watford, Newcastle, West Brom and Leicester, then Jesus becomes even more enticing.

I agree with your point on Jesus having tougher fixtures, but I'm really not a fan of Points Per 90 (PP90), mainly because FPL Points aren't awarded per minute, they're awarded per game! You get 1 point for an appearance in a game, or 2 points for playing over an hour in a game, but that's it - the 90 minute mark itself has zero relevance in FPL points scoring.

For example, if a player comes on for a 5 minute cameo off the bench, and does nothing, they'll get 1 point, but they'll have actually earned 18 PP90. Any player getting subbed on and off a lot will quickly build an advantage in PP90 over someone who regularly stays on the pitch for the full match.

The problem with Points Per Game is that every 5 minute sub appearance counts just as much as a game where a player gets 90 minutes. The reason I like Points Per Start is I think it gives you the best of both worlds - you get a true picture of how a player does in FPL when he starts. Some players will never play 90 minutes, even if they start, and so PP90 massively inflates their perceived potential if they get a run in the team.

Yes I acknowledged that 1 point 1 minute cameos skew the data a little, but I still think it's a better measure than points per start because Jesus has often been subbed around 50-60 minutes and now he is more likely to play 90. He's also come off the bench and scored/assisted.

Perhaps a better measure is to look at points per 90 minutes, but to exclude the matches and points obtained where Jesus and Aguero played less than 30 mins. If we were to run this analysis for this season then:

Points per 90 minutes (excluding games where the player played less than 30 minutes):

              Jesus: 6.65
              Aguero: 7.87

This also narrows the gap considerably compared to points per start and when you take into account that Jesus has had harder fixtures (and that he's scored/assisted after coming off the bench which has been excluded), then they appear to be similar options, or at least similar value for their respective prices.

Since the start of 2014-15, Harry Kane has scored 22 goals in 20 games against newly promoted sides. He's also scored a hat-trick against one of them in each of the previous three seasons (Leicester in 2014-15, Bournemouth in 2015-16 and Hull in 2016-17).

Officially bored of the game now.

No Alli. Probably wont be any Pogba tomorrow either.

Just not going to be suckered into a DGW ever again.

At this point it doesn't really matter how well Kane does it's more about how well someone like Son or Eriksen performs tonight, and tomorrow lets ignore Lukaku and focus on Valencia or Sanchez.

The big winners are going to be the people who have avoided putting all their eggs in the Kane and Lukaku baskets and instead went for Zaha, Firmino, Long, Son (more than likely) etc...

            Infuriating.

Next season I'm just going with my gut all the time rather than deliberating over it for days ha.

My initial thought I'll commit to and then leave the game until the GW starts.

Think it'll be a more enjoyable way to play the game and might even result in me doing better. I really have had an atrocious season!

No Alli tonight is the horrible, sugar-free icing on the cake.

Sorry? You seemed to have completely missed the point to what I was saying.

I clearly feel forced and I clearly can't handle a game...

I'm just saying it's frustrating when you invest in a player because of a DGW. And then I offered a solution to how I'd approach the game next season.

No idea what the hell you're going on about mate but carry on if it makes you feel any better.

It's frustrating but that's the game, I've lost ground this GW against players in my ML that haven't bothered changing their team. I've got 14 players with another game though (fingers crossed) and my rivals only have 6-7 so hopefully I can pull it back.

Wait until the end of the GW to see if it was a disaster

It's one of those things where you assess who's more likely to feature in both games and therefore theoretically have a higher points ceiling than alternatives but at the same time ignore those potential gems for a single GW.

Zaha for example - I had him in my draft team because he was available. Same with Arnie and Shaq. (Benched Shaq). But in my Fantasy I was more concerned with Alli, Pogba, Mahrez, Gross. All of which have so far proved to be massive disappointments.

Obviously we have games to come, but I know a lot of people will be left reeling somewhat by whats happened thus far this week. DGW37 I will NOT be loading up on City and United players... well, that's what I tell myself anyway.

this is just hindsight though because you've seen who's scored points and who hasn't. We all brought in DGWers because there was a lot of good options and as you say you play the higher points ceiling, or what i'd say the higher percentages of points. We'll all do the same again, because we believe it to be the best move unless they're exceptional SGWers like Salah.

Less premium options back then, was more feasible to price him that disgustingly high. They want people to enjoy the game, not get bored of it because they can't afford anyone.

Again, the "casual" argument if you like. FPL have a base of 6 mil and growing now. They need to walk a fine line between catering to them and making the game too easy.

It's not goals that matter, but points. And points include assists as well. He's just matching Eriksen/KDB for points and over 2m more expensive.

Na not all points based, players can score few points in a season (e.g injury etc) and still have massive price tags... It’s goals that matter, you won’t get a premium teams main 30 goal striker for 11.5m.

He has been a bit light on assists... but he has penalties, and hoovers up so much of Spurs goals he’s always a safe captaincy compared to most players in the game. Surprised he hasn’t yet cleared 200 points this year though it’s very strange, he’ll hopefully have another 40 or 50 on the board in the last few weeks

Maybe 12.5, buthe still looks too good for that, it would be great if he was 12.5 mind you

I think the reason he doesnt seem worth it this season is because of clearly underpriced players like City mids and Salah.

KDB doesn't feel underpriced. Nor does Eriksen. Kane has just been matching KDB for a while now.

Liverpool is selling their best players, Salah is their best player.

Real Madrid 9 times out of 10 gets the player they want, rumor has it its Salah who caught their eye.

                        You do the maths.

He’d surely command at least €150m fee. So they would have lifted about €300m in 9 months from Coutinho & Salah... who cost about €40m between them. That’s some profit right there

Why are they still selling their best players exactly? They're absolutely loaded off of Coutinho cash. They could just about afford anyone on the market right now.

I think it depends on their performance in the CL

Probably beacasue the best players really want to play for the very best clubs in Europe and despite recent form Liverpool is not on the same shelf as Real or Barca.

Don’t want both if each is 13. Can only captain one, obviously. You’ll see most with both on ffs next season imo and the “casuals” with only one will be flying high with their well-balanced teams. Can already see it now

To be fair, if he didn’t score those 7-8 goals toward the very end of last season, no way he’s close to 12.5 this year. Eriksen and dele performed the whole season pretty much (after a slow beginning). Kane was erratic until the final 5 gw’s or so I believe. Erratic like this year I guess
