The Community Round Up

Our community writers have been on fine form over the past week, presenting us with one of the busiest periods for articles on record.

Fantasy Premier League Bonus Point changes, squad rotation and goalkeeper selection were among the array of issues assessed. It was also a bumper week for Hot Topics, as we look back on discussions on Fantasy football’s unofficial achievements, the best premium players on offer and also welcome the youngest new recruit to the Fantasy Football Scout family.

The Community Articles

The changes to Fantasy Premier League’s Bonus Point System (BPS) was the subject of The 3rd Turd’s impressive research this week. Incredibly he has managed to configure next season’s changes to last season’s games to find out just who will be the winners and losers when it comes to bonus allocation.

Another stellar piece of analysis was unveiled by The Shoemaker, newly established as one of the community’s top new contributors. This time he examined the subject of squad rotation, assessing those teams with the most and least settled sides.

Rotation of a different nature was the focus of O’Shaughnessy latest article, in which he considered the best strategy for captains at the start of the season. This was an issue also picked up by Match of the Dan later in the week.  Le Saux Solid Crew’s look at Fantasy Football’s best all round attacking players in recent years proved further, essential reading in the search for the best armband selection.

As Fantasy managers prepare for Gameweek 1, price is always a primary consideration. This week saw a flurry of community articles offering sound advice for those in search of value players.

Kompany man’s focus was the best bang for your buck goalkeepers, while p00sbrown took an in depth look at the budget assets available in Watford’s squad. Chicken Mandy also has an eye on value in his pick of the best Tottenham prospects.

Triggerlips has also been looking at price and the time-honoured tactic of selecting a cheap fifth midfielder to afford the premium captain candidates elsewhere. But, he wonders, is 2015/16 the season to ditch the strategy and splash the cash on all five midfielders? The search for value continued in TM245‘s look at Value Over Replacement Player theory, which considered the best value midfielders as well forwards.

When the FPL player price list was announced there were more than a few surprises, with the majority of the community overestimating many price tags, according to the results from Dat Guy’s Price Prediction Challenge. Congratulations though to the crystal ball gazing skills of Henrzd, who had the best predictions.

The Sky Sports game also launched this week and our resident expert Disable was on hand to offer advice in our dedicated Rate My Team (RMT) article.

Finally, we wanted to hark back beyond the last week to The Sarjeant’s superb analysis of Southampton’s conveyor belt of young talent – a terrific insight into a club that’s been feeding our Fantasy Football squads in recent years and may well do for seasons to come.

Don’t forget, if you’ve got some analysis, scout reports or features brewing, be sure to visit our community section to submit your article.

The Hottest Topics

Later this month we have big plans regarding the steady stream of “Rate My Team” or “RMT” posts coming in. In the meantime, the community offered their advice on RMT etiquette to ensure that they attract replies.

A number of Hot Topics over the week took a look at some of the key names already featuring in many early Fantasy football draft teams. Branislav Ivanovic has emerged as the most popular premium priced defender, according to our poll. While for Wakey Manchester City’s David Silva is a name that should be top of the list of midfield candidates and Parm took a look at Alexis Sanchez’ Fantasy returns with and without some of Arsenal’s key men on the pitch.

More than half of FPL teams already own Eden Hazard but Rattan64 ponders whether Fantasy managers could be better off with 2.5 million in their pockets by drafting in his cheaper Chelsea team mate Cesc Fabregas instead?

A team with no shortage of choice in midfield is Man United, who this week added Morgan Schneiderlin and Bastien Schweinsteiger to a midfield that already boats Juan Mata and Memphis Depay. Doosra, however, is unimpressed and sparked a lively discussion this week after declaring the Red Devil’s revamped midfield a mess. In contrast, Wild Rover thinks the summer spending spree shows a side mounting a genuine title challenge.

Reacting quickly to the form of players such as United’s new recruits early on in the season is amongst the key advice on offer in Birdman77’s discussion on increasing team value in FPL. Reacting to transfer developments is also important, with Younes Kaboul’s move from Tottenham to Sunderland prompting Fantasy Noob to launch a debate on the most nailed-on Black Cat defenders.

Amongst the toughest players to predict a rise in form from are those from promoted teams. Yu Suk Young took this look back at some of the promoted players that proved a worthy investment. The Puntmaster also provides some useful information about those new to the Premier League with this update on his research into new recruits and promoted teams’ players. While Champs took a look at some of those promoted stars that failed to deliver.

Speaking of delivery, Granville popped by with the happy news that this week Mark welcomed a new addition to the family, with the birth of his daughter Edith. While Edith is the youngest birthday marked, this week also saw our resident Southampton expert Lucy celebrate her birthday, which she shares with former Saints star Gareth Bale.

Finally, one of this week’s most popular posts was Bsloebadger’s discussion on unofficial achievements in FPL, such as the Bench Buster, where your bench outscores your starting 11, and Captain Fantastic, where your armband selection delivers returns for 10 weeks in a row.

The Members Tables

With goalkeepers’ stock rising following a change to the bonus points Davejug1’s table went on the hunt for the most prolific penalty savers on offer.

If you’re a member and are yet to get to grips with the custom statistics tables, you can view this movie for an explanation of how they work. Also, remember to tag them so that people can find the tables with ease.

So Depay seems isolated behind the striker. I think the only changes from the actual line up will be De Gea for Johnstone, Schweini for Carrick, Depay on the wing, and Rooney behind the striker they're going to buy.

      How nice of you.

      Cech, Ruddy
      Azpi, Francis, Huth, Cedric, Matthews
      Ritchie, Coutinho, Ozil, Silva, Behrami
      Kane, Okazaki, Costa

2m in the bank and 0% chance of me not changing this by August 8.

Maybe just go with Cech and save the extra 0.5m. Play him every week.

        I like the defence.

Not a bad midfield. Coutinho is a bit of an iffy one, apart from hitting long range goals for a few weeks in a row last season he's never been a consistent FPL option. That said, he has stated he wants to improve his goalscoring so it's not the worst punt, I just think there is better 8m players. I think there are better 4.5's than Behrami - he's a YC magnet, right? Not that it makes too much of a difference.

And I'd stay well clear of any Leicester attackers. They have four or five strikers and who know's who's first choice and there is likely going to be rotation. Maybe upgrade to Jrod, Lukaku or downgrade to Deeney/Wilson/Sakho?

        1. theeribert

Yeah Behrami is probably gonna go. I had Anya but I heard he was playing as a LB and I didn't want 6 defenders in my team. And I believe that Okazaki will score goals if he plays, so I'm thinking of keeping him. Very helpful feedback though, thank you.

No worries. If you feel that way about Okazaki than fair enough, but for cheaper and slightly more expensive you can get a nailed on striker that will definitely play in Deeney/Wilson or Sakho.

Yeah if I decide to get rid of Okazaki, I think I'm gonna go with a Watford striker. Either Deeney or Ighalo.

        Goalkeepers, nice.
Pricey backline, some decent picks in there but I'd downgrade either Darmian or Clyne and upgrade Targett - he should start but you never know, Koeman could shift Yoshida there as he has done before. Also, it's a transfer waiting to happen and leaves you with only 4 defenders.

I like your midfield. I'm still a bit unsure on Ritchie, he could easily be gold but could easily flop. But if you're going to play 4-3-3 then you could always bench him when he has tough games.

Nice forward line. Can't really fault it apart from the fact I think Benteke is a wait and see at LFC.

      And one of the following.

        Keepers look good.

Defence is decent, isn't Ollson (Norwich I'm assuming) missing the start of the season? And Cook could be dislodged by Distin? Morgan also may not play in GW1.

I guess it really depends on whether Aguero and Sanchez make GW1 aye. That is a little bit too lightweight up top for my liking, though. If I had do pick I'd go for C but with Ozil.

Ollson from WBA - Pullis effect

Ollson is left back, right? Because Brunt had been playing there under Pulis. That seems a very risky pick to me.

But Distin has to replace either Cook or Elphick, and Elphick's attacking returns were a lot better than Cook. Maybe go for Francis, yeah.

            No worries.

I'm not too sure about Mignolet tbh. Liverpool have some great early fixtures but also some horrible away games. If you were going down the LFC defence route why not get Sakho/Skrtel/Clyne in and then rotate them for their poor fixtures? Although I guess if Hennessey starts for WBA you could do that - how do they rotate though?

Defence looks good, only if Saylor is a starter though.

Nice midfield, not sure I'd be confident starting Ki every week though.

Can't really fault the forward line. I have a feeling Kane will slow down but he certainly has the starting fixtures to prove me wrong.

          Thanks for the comments!

The GKs don't rotate well tbh, i am still looking for the right combo for 9m. I might as well downgrade to a 8.5 combo in orger to upgrade Saylor...

Doosra actualy convinced me on the great value of Ki.

Still have some thinking to do!

I'd prefer a Chelsea defender and a cheaper keeper to Courtois. But it saves you a bit of coin if you wanna go down that route.

Defence looks good as long as Saylor is nailed, which I'm not so sure he is.

Can't fault the midfield - although Ritchie could just as easily flop as he could explode.

Nice forward line, except Benteke is a wait and see for me.

        Is Anya nailed?

        1. GreennRed
          • 12 Years

Cheers Nick. Not sure if Anya is nailed or even if he'll play out and outvwide and not wing back, but I'll have a playing 4.5 m mid before GW1.

Taylor to play v Sacramento. Don't expect to play more than 3 defenders too often and needing a 5th will be rare so he frees up a few quid.

My thinking in Courtois v Terry or Ivanovic is he's a nice bit cheaper and none of the other keeprs are likely to match Chelsea's 17 CS of last season. Azpil is cheap but brings little over a CS opportunity compared to Ivanovic or Terry. Richie could well become Grealish or AN Other before KO.

Not sure about the Chelsea double up, it's very pricey. Downgrade Courtois to another keeper or get two 4.5s and rotate them.

Not a bad defence, only thing is that Morgan may not make the start of the season (just switch with Huth to be safe) and Richards plays for Villa who aren't great at shut outs under TS.

Nice midfield, I think Milner could be a great pick, Ritchie could easily fail though but may be worth a punt.

        Nice forward line.

A lot of away games in that goalkeeper rotation from memory. Could improve there.

Nice defence, not sure on a Spurs defender personally, though. They always seem to disappoint, and it can only get worse if Lloris leaves.

Nice midfield. I think you need a chelsea midfielder though.

Lukaku has some pretty poor fixtures. He's always been an FPL troll in my eyes so I'd stay well clear unless it's a GW1 punt only. Other then that strikers look good, Ighalo could be golden.

Only other thing is that you are lacking captaincy options. I wouldn't be too comfortable captaining Costa.

Nice keepers, especially if Hennessey starts at WBA.

Not sure on that defence, two 4.0's that may not be playing. Targett only has max 2 games in him before he is deadwood and Taylor has just returned from an achilles injury, no signs that say he'll be nailed.

I like the midfield. Get rid of Wanyama for another 4.5, Wanyama has high ownership % and the casuals will sell when he blanks in the first few GWs.

Nice forward line, but are you playing Ighalo every week?

With a GW4 WC in mind...:

      Ruddy/Rudd
      Azpi - Merte - Huth - Coates - Targett
Haz - Theo - Mane - Hendo - Anya or Fletcher
      Costa - Rooney - Wilson

Question marks remain over merte (like the look of darmian, but don't trust LvG), Targett (may play him in GW2 if Bertrand is not back, but will get rid with WC), and Wilson up front. Don't like starting with a promoted striker, but he seems the best I can get at that price range for the opening few.

      Whaddya reckon? Cheers.

Defence looks decent apart from Targett, Bertrand could well be back by GW2 in which case he would have been completely useless. I'd upgrade to a 4.5. I want a Sunderland defender too but it's hard to know who'll start at CB.

Midfield looks good, can't really fault it although I prefer Chadli over Hendo. That's just me though.

Nice forward line. Wilson is the best promoted striker to start with imo, on pens and has the best fixtures. Deeney will probably be better when Watford's fixtures turn..

        Good team that overall, though.

Midfield is okay, only thing concerning me is Lens - I'm fairly sure he doesn't have a good history. I'd look elsewhere.

Forward line looks good except for Lukaku. Decent GW1 punt but wouldn't want him beyond that.

Thanks Nick. Spot on the areas where I'm not sure yet. My original plan was any WBA and Guzan but Myhil / Hennessey uncertainty has put me off. 4th midfielder and 3rd forward as well.

      RMT:

      Schmeichel/Speroni
      Darmian, Mings, Huth
      Hazard, Henderson, Walcott, Ritchie
      Dzeko, Costa, Rooney
      (Wanyama, O'Shea, Williams)

      Thanks Nickofoz

How do those keepers rotate? I prefer Schmeichel/Fabianski if you can find the spare 0.5m

GOod defence. Lacks Chelsea or Arsenal but it could work out.

I like the midfield. As I said above I prefer Chadl over Hendo, but that's just personal. Ritchie could easily flop too. But he could work out alright.

Dzeko is a very funny pick. If Aguero is out I'd say Bony is the go to man. Definitely downgrade Dzeko to Sakho or Deeney/Wilson.

Drafting the team for the first time..RMT

      Ruddy, Butland (Norwich- Stoke rotation)
Koscielny/Azpilicueta, Morgan, Naughton, Richards, Olsson (1 elite defender and 2 rotating defenders Leicester & Swansea+ West Brom and Villa)
Walcott, Hazard, Henderson/Milner, Pugh, McCarthy (3 good midfielders and 1 rotation)
      Rooney, Aguero/Bony, Deeney

Walcott and Olsson are risky as their place is not guaranteed. But they can be replaced by their team-mates Ramsey/Cazorla/Ozil and Lescott/McAuley who are much more guaranteed starters.

What's hard is choosing between Koscielny and Azpilicueta..Chelsea's defence will be rock solid but, the acquisition of Cech gives me a bit more confidence in Arsenal defence too. Hence the dilemma.

Milner/Henderson will also be decided based on pre-season form. Preferably Henderson as he has spot kick duties too but at the moment can't ignore the industrious Milner as well.

Pugh and McCarthy are subject to rotation.

That's a popular goalkeeper rotation, but it's not actually all that great. A lot of away games there.

Average defence if I'm honest. Olsson probably won't start for West Brom, Villa hardly keep clean sheets, Williams is a better FPL option than Naughton imo, Morgan might not make GW1 (switch to Huth). Yeah if you had to pick between Kosc and Azpi that's though. Probably Kosc since he is nailed. I've got both Ivanovic and Kosc.

Yes, I'd do Walcott -> Ozil and Olsson -> Lescott/Dawson

Decent midfield. Don't know much about Pugh and McCarthy, but I know that I hate attacking rotation. That's just me though.

Btw, which McCarthy is that? Both are DM's right? Not much FPL worth in that case.

Other than that sounds good. But if Aguero is out I wouldn't go for Bony. Not the greatest starting fixtures anyway. Look at Lukaku, Jrod, Deeney, Wilson, Sakho etc.

    Man. Utd. 1-0 Club America
    FIRST HALF RECAP

    - - - - - - - Johnstone - - - - - - -
    Darmian - Jones - Blind - Shaw
    - - - - - Morgan - Carrick - - - - -
    Depay - - - - Mata - - - - Young
    - - - - - - - Rooney - - - - - - -

Darmian was rock solid, after a jittery first few mins, won every tackle and looks a very smart player at the back.
Jones was alright, not much to do, with most of his passes back to the keeper.
Blind made a couple of unnecessary tackles giving away free kicks.
Shaw bombed forward quite a bit, but looks rather shite at defending, imo. Gave away many FKs.
Schneiderlin was superb, scored the goal and collected and sprayed the ball wide nicely.
Carrick ticked over, with good passing accuracy as usual. Same as always.
Depay was meh, should have won a PK. Selfish and should have played in Young for a 2nd United goal. But you can see the raw talent, a couple of superb through balls.
Mata played well, assisted the goal and should have had one himself from a Young cut back.
Young was the same as always, willing to run.. but he's still Ashley Young.
Rooney was the most disappointing. Offside numerous times and didn't look like he cared.

Best players of the half: Schneiderlin, Darmian, Mata
    Most disappointing: Rooney, Depay, Shaw

Also this. Milner is actually rather good these days.

I suppose that's a solid argument if you don't take age, tactics or teams into account.

Why is Januzaj so lazy? Pereira put it on a golden platter. He must want it on platinum.

And they've just bought another Januzaj in Depay.

LVG benching Rooney if he continues playing like this during the pre-season, you think it may be an option or is he bench-proof?

          Worrying about pre season game?
come on, are you boselli fan or something?
United not even have decent replacement for his position right now...

Worrying to see our captain playing without that "spark" for a while now. Should be benchable like any other player that isn't performing...

      slim
      its just pre season game
more important thing is to build match fitness
depay, januzaj or wilson are poor options for whole season. depay have such a potential though

Just been working/ taking 2 summer classes.

No kids or wife yet, maybe in 2-3 years 😉

Club America have been playing too much FIFA15. Sweat, Team Pressing, High Pressure, Ultra Attack. All they need is Ibarbo and Doumbia up top.

Rooneys just worried his misses is in rodeo drive with the credit card, he'll be fine come the start of the season.

He's the Only real choice as forward, Morgan/Carrick/Swine will mean the get plenty of ball and mata and depay will provide creativity....... I reckon he'll be FPL gold this season.
