Great Expectations

Great Expectations – Bafetimbi Gomis

Lacking strength in depth up front, Swansea City recruited Bafetimbi Gomis last summer in an attempt to provide their leading frontman, Wilfried Bony, with competition. The Ivorian responded by stamping his authority on the lone striker berth, netting eight goals in between Gameweek 7-16, thus restricting his counterpart to just three starts over the first half of the season.

In the wake of Bony’s big-money move to Manchester City, Gomis initially struggled to impart his presence, before a late flourish alerted Fantasy managers to his potential next term.

Key Factors

  • Gomis clearly profited from a free run at the lone forward berth upon Bony’s winter departure; the French marksman recorded just one goal prior to Gameweek 21 yet notched six strikes and one assist from that point onwards. Looking at his minutes per goal average before (581) and after (198) that point offers the truest indicator of an upturn in form. In truth, the former Lyon striker needed time to calibrate his sights, as evidenced by the five consecutive blanks he carded at the turn of the year. In the latter stages, Gomis clearly exhibited greater confidence and become more attuned with manager Garry Monk’s philosophy, netting six times in his final ten appearances of the season – with three of these being cameos of 20 minutes or less. Furthermore, Gomis reaffirmed his credentials by scoring against the likes of Arsenal and Manchester City, revealing fixture-proof potential that should be further investigated next term.
  •

  • Considering he chalked up a modest haul of 84 points last season, Gomis is set to remain in the mid-price bracket. Conversely, Gylfi Sigurdsson is poised for a sizeable price increase – in light of the 6.0-priced midfielder notching an impressive 154 points – which could render Gomis the most valuable route in Swansea’s attack. This line of thought is lent greater credence by the wealth of high-priced midfielders (the likes of Eden Hazard, Alexis Sanchez and David Silva) who are already topping many shopping lists, making it harder to isolate funds for a pricier Sigurdsson, who could easily come in around 7.5 – 8.0 next time out.
  •

  • Delving into the stats that defined his strong finish to the campaign, Gomis executed a shot every 27.6 minutes from Gameweek 21 onwards. Put into perspective, only two forwards that clocked 1000+ minutes from that point on (Sergio Aguero and Harry Kane) fired off their attempts at a quicker rate. In addition, Gomis posted a shot accuracy of 44.2% and shot conversion rate of 14% from the point of Bony’s departure – intriguingly, that outstrips the Ivorian’s shot accuracy (36.4%) and conversion rate (13.6%) for the Swans in 2014/15.
  •

  • Gomis’ late-season displays certainly bode well for his prospects next time around. Speaking on the Frenchman’s showings, Monk heaped praise on Gomis, with the Swansea lone striker role looking his to lose:

“Of course he was frustrated in the early part of his time here because he is a big striker and people forgot what he had done his career; he’s played Champions League, he’s played international football, he’s scored a big number of goals in every single season. He’s a top player who wanted to feel pride in what he was achieving and being that No 1 – but he was never a problem. And I told him at the time, ‘Let’s have this conversation at the end of the season and I guarantee things will be different’. I think they are. He has been fantastic for us.”

  •

  • Monk’s occasional use of a midfield diamond behind a front two merely heightens Gomis’ security of starts. Whilst there’s no question over Sigurdsson’s starting role in either system, the Icelandic playmaker struggled for returns whenever Monk moved away from the default 4-2-3-1, as he was stationed somewhat deeper as a result of the switch.
  •

  • The arrival of new signing Andre Ayew may also have a bearing on Gomis’ prospects. The pacy Ghanaian will doubtless attract interest in pre-season, particularly if he’s confirmed as a midfielder across the games. Ayew will provide another direct attacking threat to the Swansea attack and a new avenue of service to Gomis as the lone striker. Certainly Sigurdsson’s appeal will be dented whilst Fantasy managers assess Ayew as an alternative, a factor that could initially leave many considering Gomis as the preferred option in Monk’s attack.

I guess English players do have that inflation on them but what I´m trying to say is one season doesn´t make him world class and with that price tag its a big risk a la Carroll.

Oh good Lord. I thought the Sterling prices were insane, but this!? Half a good season and he's worth £12m more than Aguero was, £18m more than Costa?

Jesus wept, if Sterling could be the next Wright-Phillips, Kane could be the next Kevin Phillips.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

The FPL All Time Dream Team

I thought I'd take a look through the mists of time to see what an all time FPL side would look like.

Its up to you which formation you want, or whether you want to have your best ever cheap striker or not. I’ve tried to keep my bench relatively cheap – or those that were excellent when they were cheap.
I imagine Thierry Henry might get a mention for those who have been playing longer than me, sadly though his heyday was before my time. Also remember to put your captain and vice captain in.

    Here's mine...

    Ben Foster

Baines Vidic Bale (when classified as a defender)

Ronaldo (c) Lampard Fabregas (Arsenal era) Gerrard

    Drogba Rooney Suarez (vc)

Sub: David James (Portsmouth era) Sterling (when he was 4.5m), Graham Alexander, Ryan Shawcross

Blackpool era Charlie Adam pushed Sterling close for inclusion as a good value bench midfielder, but Sterling's ultra low price tag swung it for me.

Yep. I was tempted to leave one striker spot for a budget one of which Carroll, Kane and Zaki were the front runners. In the end I couldn't ignore Drogba (who won me the FFS cup and my mini leagues almost singlehandedly one season) Rooney (and his longevity as an option) and Suarez (who is second only to Ronaldo for being the best FPL assett ever for me).

I've only been playing properly for 3-4 years, so it's confined to then:

      Begovic
      Baines/Ivanovic/Zabaleta
      Walcott/Bale/Michu/Dempsey
      RVP/Aguero/Kane

Bench: Foster/Demel (has to be in there)/Fellaini (2012-13)/Ba

Should clarify that as I had a dead team last year, I didn't get Suarez's best FPL season, so he's omitted.

Drogba (first time with Chelsea), Rooney (longevity - getting huge scores season after season) and Suarez (Ronaldo like hauls week in week out) were better for me. RVP was good, but it was really only two seasons that he remained injury free and good.

I started playing after Ronaldo left, so will include players from then. Can't be bothered to try work out the budget, I know I am over. But this would be my all time team, some one season wonders but mostly the consistant players):

Joe Hart (Birmingham 4.0m, had a great season where they finished 9th. Also perhaps the last time a GK rotation worked)

Baines (FPL gold for years, defender on pens has only happened twice)
Vidic (Big goal threat and Utd were a great defence under Fergie)
Terry (Best defence and huge goal threat over the years)
Coleman (Was a bargain defender when Everton used to keep clean sheets, lots of attacking points)
Demel (Not just for his cult status but West Ham were solid under Allardyce and he kept clean sheets even when his teammates didn't)

Lampard (the best midfielder in FPL history - 22 goals in a season!)
Gerrard (all set pieces and Liverpool seems to get loads of pens every season, attacking role in earlier years)
      Walcott (see Jonty's hot topic)
Bale (Has been OOP before too, you knew he was going to get on the scoresheet most weeks in his last season before he went to Madrid)
Adam (need a budget player in there - Blackpool gung-ho approach, on set pieces and man in the stand favourite)

van Persie (his first season at Utd and the 2 at Arsenal before that were prolific, its rare that strikers also take corners too)
Aguero (pipped Suarez as he has probably been more consistant over multiple seasons whereas Suarez was actually pretty wasteful to begin with)
Kane (Only one season but has to be in there for being the best value player in FPL ever)

Based on the last 6 seasons:

      Gomes (TOT,2009-10)
Baines (EVE) - Terry (CHE) - Coleman (EVE) (all 2013-14)
      Lampard (CHE,2009-10) (V) - Fabregas (ARS,2009-10) - Bale (TOT,2012-13) - Yaya (MCI,2013-14)
      Suarez (LIV,2013-14) (C) - Drogba (CHE,2009-10) - RVP (ARS & MUN, 2011-13)

      Mannone (SUN,2013-14) - Siggy (SWA,2011-12) - Clyne (SOU,2013-14) - Demel (WHU, 2013-14).

      Bale // Terry //Coleman

Ronaldo // Fabregas // Lampard // Van Der Vaart // Walcott

      Tevez // Suarez

So many to choose from, but these are the players that have all had major impacts on my seasons in years gone by. Heroes one and all!

I understand that he could be useful for City, they really need a good winger, but if they go past £35 million then I think they should back down.

Sure. He was really effective through the middle at Southampton. I think Silva, Nasri and Lallana could easily interchange position. Very versatile players all 3. Only thing missing would be crossing ability.

Crossing not so much an issue if they only use Aguero up top, I guess. And yeah, that could interchange, be good for them to have someone else when Nasri inevitably goes off the boil.

They need English players though, and he is by far the best, attainable player.

        1. Somalion

They could easily sign a second English goalie to sit on the bench (Tom Amos is on a free tranny). I think if they lose one of Kolarov/Zaba they could go for an English full back as there are a few of them floating about (might be good to sign one anyways as Zaba is 30 and Kolarov is 29, Sagna is 32). Heck, they desperately need a new CM and Wilshere is English, eh? 😉

And I agree, as in they do need a player like Sterling so he'd be a good buy. But if Pool want £40 million, they'd be better off finding a winger elsewhere and spending less money on a few English squad players.

          1. Wilshere Knowledge
            • 10 Years

I think Sterling is worth £40m, personally.

He's had a tough 6 months, and his form has dipped, but he is still undoubtedly a top, top player. He has great energy level for a youngster, doesn't pick up niggly injuries, and has played left wing, right win, striker, no.10 AND wing back. And lest we forget, he was Englands best player in Brazil. He put in better performances than Wayne Rooney ever has at a tournament.

He has areas of his game that he can improve of course, but he has plenty of time to do so. There aren't many better prospects in world football. So £40m for that, including the English tax, and I'd say it would be fair.

England's best player in Brazil was not a big feat though.

He's a top prospect, not yet a top player, let alone top, top player.

'Top player' is a bit of an ambiguous term really. At 20 years old, he'd at least make the squad of most top teams.

And okay being the best of a bad lot doesn't mean much, but independently of other performances, he was very good. If he looks right at home at international level, that says something.

“Of course, he’s still lacking some things, but he’s improved a lot, and I think that’s showed.

“At the moment there’s nothing, I think he’ll stay.

          “I don’t think we’ll sell our top players, I don’t think that’s a risk.”

They want 25m euros, from what I've read recently a deal can be expected to go through, I'm not sure on that though. Not needed anyway, and that'll be 25m that won't go towards a proper GK or a Striker.

Isn't needed though, just isn't required, its typical Liverpool transfer strategy, sign potential everywhere you already have a lot of other players with potential, completely ignore players who are the finished article, supplement that with bargain bin tossers who do nothing but leech off the wage pool.

Kovacic is flavour of the week, not to say he won't become a good player or even a top player but I'd be surprised many have even seen him play on here. That's not a dig at anyone on here and I'm sure some have seen him play, it's more about the whole mentality.

Get Gyan. Seriously. He has even said:

“I am happy where I am now because statistically I am scoring more now than when I was in Europe,” he said.

‘But you never know. Maybe a club from Europe will come for me again. “It all depends on my performance so that is where my focus will be."

I think he has it in him to be a very capable PL striker, was good for Sunderland and would be perfect for a couple of seasons at Pool.

I agree. This is as good a punt as any. And at least he's got a good attitude, if a bit touchy - seen that he was so badly emotionally hurt for missing that one penalty. On the other hand, one has to admit that it was the biggest moment of his career. Converting it would have got an African team to the World Cup Semi-Finals for the first time in history. And the next chance might not come soon.

Most of those Ghana games would have been against lesser opposition I'd imagine, and international football is hardly the hallmark of quality. There is no point suggesting names if there just aren't any, you either improve the squad or you don't, absolutely no point wasting money we don't have on more useless players we don't need, maybe next summer will throw something up. My choice this summer would be Higuain, the only player I can see improving us.

I think your expectations are ridiculous tbh. All Liverpool need at the moment is a capable striker who can give them a couple of good seasons while they bring on the likes of Ings etc. There are plenty of targets that Liverpool can sign who will add a decent level of goals, the likes of Dzeko etc. but none of you want them. So I dunno. Gyan is very talented, simply went for a big wage, but he is more than capable of adding a good few goals to an attacking side. As are the likes of Llorente, Dzeko etc. all international players but they're apparently not good enough.

It's not an alternative. It's an extra option. There are a number of decent options with a bit more experience available, which is valuable until Ings is up to the level. And that is all that is required.

I'd stick with Ings too. No other strikers out there are good enough because of varying reason to do with their overall game, the ones that are being suggested score goals so appear good, I'd rather we didn't waste more money.

But it is established that none of those will be used. Borini likely to leave, Lambert possibly out as well.

If it was a situation where Borini or Lambert or any of them were going to be trusted, then I wouldn't argue. But they're not trusted. I mean they didn't even give Balo, one of the best PK takers, penalties. That's the level of trust.

Well from my view it has been verging at rude at points. And fine, Dzeko alone. So aside from him there's nobody, which is grand.

But it's okay because apparently you've not watched many of these players. You mock Llorente despite him having a very good career, the likes of Gyan, Ba etc. don't seem to be runners at all for you which is silly as even Gyan who "only" scored 10 goals in one season in the PL from free play which is better than Ings, Lambert, Balo and Borini. Not only that, he's actually a really great forward man for holding up the ball and getting attacks going, something Pool really like. A lot of these guys aren't triple A signings at all, but all of them could be signed for a minimal fee (something Pool also like) and offer an option seeing as Borini, Balo and Lambert are essentially done at Pool.

The whole point of discussion, is for Liverpool to sign someone that will give them a decent chance of breaking into the top 4. I honestly don't know what to say to you, if you think Llorente and Gyan are the answers.....

I'm not saying it is the solution, but you have even identified it as unlikely that Dzeko would go (who btw has only ever scored 4-6 goals more than Gyan playing for a much better side). But I also mentioned a lot of other players who would go. And the whole point is that there are players like Origi and Ings that will develop, but to have another PL/Generally experienced striker there to help out (seeing as they don't trust any of Lamb, Balo, Borini) would ease the pressure on them. Then in a season or two Ings *should* be at a level where he can play next to Sturridge and Origi can fill in with injuries. That is the only point I'm trying to make here, they clearly want to give a player like Ings some decent PL minutes, so it would be good to have someone who can step in for Sturridge's injuries and rotate with Ings.

Unless they don't plan on developing Ings or Origi at all.

Well then wires have crossed, as I'm talking about a player who gives them chances to develop their other forwards as well. As I say though, Gyan's record is not as far from Dzeko as you think, playing for a much worse side.

And part of the problem is that there aren't really any massive options going, so they need to add a strongish player to the front line for cheap. Which is all I'm suggesting.

If the hope of breaking into the top 4 again is to hinge solely on a new striker, then you're talking about a Suarez-esque player. I can't see that at all, unless they want to gamble on unknown talent like Lacazette (who won't leave anyway, but just an example).

I can definitely appreciate the UAE being poor, I'm not here to argue that. But he has maintained great international form during that period, and has also remained clearly a cut above the rest of the players there. Not to say he'd immediately jump back in, but he's no doubt able to do so. He just hasn't wanted to.

And remember that Dzeko could be £15-20 million, at 29 plus big wages. As we know Liverpool are not big into massive wages plus a big transfer fee, I'm trying to offer alternatives that also have good experience who will come in cheaper.

The other option, which obviously is preferred but less probable, is that they save up their remaining money and try a £40 or 50 million bid for a very big striker. But that is a really difficult task in the current climate of the club, and £200k + a week wages would not be appreciated.

Yes, he hasn't been regular at all. The issue is the price and wages, I'm trying to think of it the way Liverpool's board currently think of it.

The logic in Gyan (by the way, I've given a number of other players as well, so it's not that I remotely think Gyan is the only option at all) is that he would cost a couple of million, wages would be less than Dzeko (another think the board would like), and he's a capable player. He plays in a bad league now, I accept, but he has remained the best player in that league easily for a while, it is not as if his own standards have dropped. So he could still transition back. As I say, I'm only offering budget options that could still add a bit to the team if the board don't want to spend £40 million on a striker.

Just curious, what valuation do people give Sterling?

One factor I take into account is how a player's bad attributes improve. So in Raheem's case, his finishing would be a key area for me.

    Last season (in PL)
    Shots taken: 45
    Shots on target 22
    Goals scored 9

So that's 48.8% of shots on target, a 20% conversion rate of total shots to goals.

    This season (in PL)
    Shots taken: 84
    Shots on target: 33
    Goals scored: 7

So that's 39.2% of shots on target, an 8.3% conversion rate of total shots to goals.

So, I think it would be fair to say that as far as improving a bad attribute, Sterling has not done well at all this season. And I think that would impact my valuation, it's fine to say a player has potential, but you need evidence that said potential is able to be fulfilled, or perhaps they don't have that much potential to improve certain areas.

I think if City come back with £35 million Pool should snap that up and look to do a bit of spending. But they may manage to get City to pay £40 million, I wouldn't at that price, but with FFP relaxed around City they can spend a bit more.

I'm taking into account the inflation that goes with all English players, but I agree. That finishing stat is worrisome, suggests that even when given the chance to play up top etc. it hasn't improved at all (and gotten worse).

£15m for what he is. No more than £25m for what he can be. I feel very awkward bumping it up that much to be honest. I'm more than happy to hold City to ransom though. 😉

I reckon, with the English price bump, £30 million was fair. But I agree, it seems to me that FSG are happy to let Pool spend whatever they make in the transfer market so they need to get as much as they can.

Yep. I think £30m is more than enough. But young English players can fetch crazy prices - Shaw £30m, Chambers £20m, Henderson £20m when he was 21...

Yeah, it's true that that 2013-2014 could have been a fluke season in terms of finishing at least. Given he's got a bigger role and twice as many shots now, it is likely that the 2014-2015 rates are closer to his real, stable ones.

So regression was always going to happen. Just how bad regression, that's the question.

            Let's try two different assumptions.

            1. This season is a shite season to even out his good first season, and the current total rate is his real one. That would be a decent 12.4% that you could expect him to get from here on. On that basis, if he converts something like 13%-15% for a couple of seasons in a row in future, it would be improvement. In this case improvement would get his career conversion rate up, but still look bad relative to the first season.

            2. This season's 8.3% reflects his true ability. In that case, getting anything like 10% consistently would be an improvement. However, his current 12.4% career rate would then be way skewed by one lucky season, and even improving his finishing would bring it down. Also, it is pretty likely that he'll even that one season out by one shite season. Suppose that it is the next one, and he'll repeat the same shooting numbers, 84 shots, but he would get a bad season to match the good first one and get his career rate to 8.3%. This would mean that he'd score only 1 or 2 goals next season. Even if he improved his scoring to a general rate of 10%, that balancing unlucky season would lead him to score only about 5 goals. Had he been bought for £40M plus, it would be blasted as a complete waste of money, even if he had actually improved as a player and you could expect good of him.

Seen his shots and the way he plays, I don't think there really is a chance that the first seasons 20% is his real conversion rate. The truth is probably somewhere between the two assumptions I considered, and I'd expect that he is gradually improving his finishing.

            1. Camp No No
              • 10 Years
              9 years, 6 days ago

Let's try a yet another one. Suppose his real finishing was of a good striker level of expected conversion rate of 14% first season (I doubt he was at that level). He would have come only 2 goals shy from the expected two season tally after the lucky first season, had he not improved at all. He's still only 3 goals shy from what his average would have been had he improved his expected rate to 15% on the first season and scored at expected rate on both seasons.

The truth is that his first season is above all expectations and skews his rates now, and he may have even improved his individual scoring abilities from the first season, supposing he never was at a good starting striker levels in the first place. If you suppose as much as that his real sustainable rate would have been 11-12% the first season, then he is still flying above that on his career average, and you could expect him to score at 12%-13% rate, 10-11 goals at current shooting rates, next season as a stable progression, without being surprised at all.

I have not taken into account the quality of chances, so these are extremely approximative numbers, but on the other hand, getting into the good scoring chances is maybe the most important factor in scoring.

So he has struggled in a quarter of his career as a youngster at a top level.

What might be the reason? Fatigue from world cup, team not performing well, contract dispute, constantly out of position. Many different factors as to why he hasn't been performing to his ow standards. This culture of reducing Liverpool's achievements in 13/14 to just one player is far too simplistic. Sterling was playing very well, regardless of what others were doing. You could make the same argument about any top player. Neymar was playing well but that's because of Messi etc..

Sterling did play well (as I said in my comment), as were Liverpool as a whole; it wasn't entirely down to Suarez. Neymar is a wonderful player who carried Santos and has carried Brazil recently; playing well in a side that finishes 2nd in the league doesn't make you worth £40m.

Sterling last season probably played on around the same level as Nasri. That's a good standard, but as I said earlier, the £35-45 bracket includes Sanchez, Aguero and Ozil. Costa and Hazard cost slightly less, Silva cost considerably less. That's the level of the prices being thrown around.

It mostly comes down to conversion rate unsustainably above expected (which means luck). This was true not only for Suarez, but several players in the team, Sterling included. There's not a world of difference between Liverpool 2012/2013, Liverpool 2013/2014 and Liverpool 2014/2015 really. Fluctuation of conversion and block rates explains most of the differences in results. Suarez explains the rest. Or about like that.

Suarez has always had a terrible conversion rate, except in La Liga where it is somewhat improved. But that's one of the reasons I've always preferred Aguero, Suarez will flourish in a team that gives him a ridiculous number of chances each game (as we saw last season).

Issue is, Sterling as a winger will need better finishing as chances will be more at a premium. And as I say, you want to see improvement. Suarez's conversion rate did improve his final season at Pool.

Suarez's conversion numbers are always going to be artificially worsened by the fact that he takes some truly outrageous attempts, that no one in their right mind bar probably Ronaldo would take. Remove those hail marys and his conversion rate would be superb for the most part.

I think the main difference between 2013-14 and 2014-15 is the type of chances he was receiving. In 2013-14 a lost of his chances were on the break and I'd imagine he might have even had more 'big chances' than this year where for large stretches of the season he's been practically our only attacking option.

It's because Suarez takes very improbable shots. He shoots from everywhere. In Barcelona, they've moved him more central, more upfront really, giving him less of the ball, and forced him to accept a system where they actually build the good chance before they shoot - Barcelona are notorious for this way of playing. So, he's no longer shooting from unlikely chances. I'd bet his rates have not changed much if you take into account the quality of scoring chances.

It's irrelevant whether Rodriguez is worth that much or not because Madrid have already paid the amount. It has already become a basis for comparisons to be made.

Personally, I think sterling is incredibly overrated. I think paying anything more than 20 mln for him is a waste of money. Just cos he has 'potential' doesn't mean he's worth 40-50 mln

Manchester City have bid €80m [£57m] for Juventus' Paul Pogba, according to reports.

The Blues are desperate to land the France midfielder this summer, after impressive performances for the Italian side saw them to the Serie A title and Coppa Italia, along with the final of the Champions League.

Juventus are understood to be considering the offer, but want nearer €100m for the former Manchester United star.

Italian newspaper Gazzetta Dello Sport report City are ready to double Pogba's wages and will offer the youngster £6.5m-a-year, which works out at around £125,000-a-week.

If they get Pogba, what will they do with Yaya? I can't see them playing together as a midfield 2.. that would be asking for trouble.

That would make Silva more of a winger, than a left sided attacking midfielder. Would seem a waste to me.

Also can't see Pelle changing his philosophy for the benefit of one player, and he surely wont give up on 2 striker all together.

Don't think Toure will play every game next year so always scope for 4-4-2 and Silva was playing that position end of the season when Lamps was the 10. Kolarov provides sufficient width tbh.

Yaya wasn't playing in the hole the season before. He would be moved there occasionally, but in the pivot was always his primary role. I remember because that's why I never bought him in FPL! 😀

Inter Milan boss Roberto Mancini has still not given up hope of signing Manchester City's Yaya Toure.

The Nerazzurri were tracking the Ivory Coast star throughout last season and want to bring him to Serie A, despite the 32-year-old all but confirming he is willing to see out the remaining two years of his contract at the Etihad Stadium.

In an interview with Italian newspaper La Stampa, Mancini admitted he is keen to rekindle his relationship with the midfielder, who he brought to the Manchester club from Barcelona in 2010.

He said: "He was the one who told me he wanted to look for new destinations.

"I spent six months explaining to him what he would find at Inter, then he spoke with his club and he fell off of our radar."

The former Manchester City manager, who guided the club to the Premier League title in 2012 and FA Cup in 2011, added: "But I haven't given up on this, I'm waiting to hear his own side of the story and in the meantime I remain hopeful.

"Or else why would he have spent six months telling me that he wanted to come to Milan?"

Not a lot of love for Sterling around these parts today! For what it's worth, Sterling is considered by the journalists across Europe (not just the UK) to be one of the brightest talents out there. He is the current holder of the Golden Boy award and that has to significantly boost his transfer value.

If a team buys him now for £30m (I believe City's bid was £25.5m) at 20 years old, then you're potentially paying £2m-£3m a year for a lad who, as already a key player for Liverpool and England, is certainly not going to get any worse for another 10 years.

Depending on a team's requirements, and as long as they can keep him focused and out of trouble, I would say he's worth the figures that are being touted.

    1. pompeyfan
      • 14 Years
      9 years, 6 days ago

No way can you say he is not going to get any worse for another 10 years. If you are looking at previous golden boy winners, both Andersen & Pato were at their absolute peak when they won - and look at them now.

        • 11 Years

This. When people say about paying for potential, that isn't necessarily a positive. There is potential for good, but also the potential for that never to be realised. Freddy Adu was the future Pele a few years ago.

Ha well admittedly neither of those lasted the distance. Anderson was signed by a top club afterwards and rotted on the bench, whilst the Pato story is fairly unique. I read an article a while back on how Brazilian footballers have a bad habit of peaking too soon or having no longevity and there does seem to be something in it - those two, Adriano, even Ronaldo and Ronaldinho.

Highly doubt Sterling will go that way though

The rest of the Golden Boy winners have shown remarkable excellence and consistency - Rooney, Messi, Fabregas, Aguero, Gotze, Pogba. It says something that Sterling won it.

£30m you could probably justify, given the premium on home-grown players, but reports are saying £50m. Again, to put that into context, a 24 year old Mesut Ozil (10 times the player Sterling is, regardless of what Owen thinks) cost £42.5m, a 25 year old Alexis Sanchez cost £32m, a 23 year old Aguero cost £38m, a 24 year old David Silva was £24m, and a 21 year old Eden Hazard cost £32m.

They are all far better players than Sterling currently is, and I'm 99% certain that they are better than Sterling will ever be.

      1. goriuanx
        • 13 Years

Have to take into account that Sterling is being sold from one English team to another. That's double inflation.

        1. Doolittle
          • 11 Years

I'd put his market value if he wasn't English at around £20m. Maybe add another £10m for him being homegrown. If City are going to pay £40m+ just to have another home-grown player then that's insane. Just get another Richard Wright type to sit on the bench.

Sterling is 20, English and with proven Premier League experience.

Hard to compare Silva or Ozil given that they were significantly older and play very differently to Sterling. It was generally agreed that Sanchez was a steal at £32m, and he's 5 years older. Hazard is the closest match - better player than Sterling for sure, but back then it was hard to say that for certain as he'd only played in Ligue 1 for a relatively small team

I've only seen £25m-£30m quoted anyway

"Relatively small" is strangely said when he won the title and played 3 seasons of EL and CL with them, including scoring a winner against Liverpool in EL when 19-year-old or so.

That was one peak season, with a very defensive strategy. Lille dominated the league for 3 seasons with a very attacking play. It's quite a difference.

4th, 1st and 3rd. Nobody could argue that Lille dominated the league for 3 seasons man.

Just to confirm, I did say "relatively" small, not just small. When i'm talking about Hazard, moving from Lille to Chelsea, I think saying relatively small is absolutely appropriate. Don't think I need to say any more on that one.

Kane needs to be very careful he doesn't go to a top club only for them to then sign two more strikers who unexpectedly become available later in the window and he finds himself in a mainly sub role.
He should stick with Spurs for another season imo.
