The Stock Check – Gameweek 37 – Monday

After clinching the title at West Bromwich Albion on Friday, Antonio Conte makes nine changes to his Chelsea line-up for a home encounter against Watford.

Cesar Azpilicueta then emerges as the Blues’ unlikely Double Gameweek 37 hero, but Eden Hazard fails to take advantage of back-to-back starts.

On the Rise

Cesar Azpilicueta
One of only two Chelsea players to retain their starting berths from Friday’s win at West Brom, the Spaniard is currently the top-scoring player for Double Gameweek 37 on 20 points.

Azpilicueta was shifted out of the back-three and handed a right wing-back berth as Victor Moses was afforded the night off entirely, and he picked a fine time to net his first goal of the season in the 4-3 win over Watford.

With an assist and clean sheet also accrued at The Hawthorns, the versatile defender was the big winner from the Chelsea contingent – only one other team-mate, Michy Batshuayi, managed double-figures (11 points) over the Blues’ pair of fixtures.

Azpilicueta has now served up 30 points in his last three appearances and, with a home clash against Sunderland still to follow, is just seven points behind team-mate Marcos Alonso at the top of the defender standings.

Cesc Fabregas
Named among the subs against the Hornets, the Chelsea playmaker once again highlighted his ability to deliver points from limited pitch-time by emerging from the bench to fire the decisive strike.

As he’s owned by a mere 3% of FPL managers, Fabregas was largely overlooked for the Double Gameweek, yet, like Azpilicueta, he’s upped his output as the season comes to a close – it’s a goal and four assists in five now for the playmaker.

Afforded just 12 minutes off the bench last night, you’d expect him to return to the first XI against the Black Cats, with Conte perhaps now looking to protect N’Golo Kante and Nemanja Matic’s minutes with one eye on the FA Cup final against Arsenal at the end of the month.

In Decline

Eden Hazard
The Belgian was a surprise starter in last night’s seven-goal thriller, but he was unable to get among the points despite playing the full 90 minutes.

Backed by 304,000+ FPL managers with the armband, the 33%-owned Hazard delivered a mere five points across the Blues’ pair of fixtures as his campaign stumbles to a close.

The winger has served up just a single assist in his last four league appearances, scoring once in six top-flight outings ahead of Sunday’s clash with the Black Cats.

As the only attacker to retain his place from the Baggies win, Hazard’s minutes could be the most in question for the Sunderland match as Conte looks towards the Wembley showdown in a bid to clinch the double in his first season at the helm.

Over 12,700 have already parted company since Friday’s deadline – only Liverpool’s Roberto Firmino has earned more sales among FPL midfielders.

      1) Do you remember your advice to the community from the end of Gameweek 1's episode of the scoutcast? For example, Jonty said "It's a marathon, not a sprint." Did you follow that advice?

      2) Will Conte want his first team players match-fit and sharp for the FA Cup Final?

      3) What did you get right this season? What did you get wrong?

      4) Was Mark's signature 'bold and aggressive' strategy the key to success this season? Will the dullards rise again?

      5) What went wrong for Jonty, an elite HOF-er who usually phones in a top 5K finish, but is now looking over his shoulder at Granville? What's the story here?

      6) Should we knee-jerk Countinho in?

      7) Who is the best GW38 punt?

1- as said many times to you that was not necessarily my advice - I was reading out a community members advice.

On point 5 - your ditching of Coutinho is far more interesting 😉

Re point 1: if you re-listen to the end of the first scoutcast episode of the season, it's a round-robin of personal advice from each contributor for the season ahead. The advice is not sourced from the community, I believe.

"It's a marathon, not a sprint" is simply a fact. It doesn't really matter whether this reminder comes from a scoutcaster or from a community member.
But sometimes you realise at some stage that you're unlikely to finish as high as usual this season, so you may decide to change your targets and perhaps have a bit of fun trying something different.

Depends whether you're chasing or defending a lead.
Jinswick was in the running for winning FPL a few years back. He didn't have a wildcard left, but he did decide to play all his differentials in GW38 - and came close to catching the leader.
Others, of course, have taken risks and fallen back.

      Strategic vs tactical wildcards?
Double game weeks this year have not really delivered on their promise.
It could be said that bottling the WC for doublegame weeks could be a detriment to the medium-term of your team.
You could argue that it's fixtures and league positions should be taken into consideration but that's just like hoping the stars are all aligned by gw 37, and then also hitting the jackpot.
At times we were led to believe that saving for gw37 would lead to the promised land.
If you need surgery in say gw 30, would you now recommend that WC is better placed to used to rebuild.

In future, is it better to use wildcards strategically for restructuring teams than tactically for double gameweeks?

btw, not having a moan. my views are coming from having a half decent score. However the last two years of WC & BB have been very underwhelming.

BB is overrated, and the big late GW is not always the best time to use it.

Use your WC when it seems best for your own particular squad.

You need a strong team for the big DGW, but you can get it either with a late WC or with an earlier WC followed by free transfers and hits as necessary.

DGW37 has been something of a rollercoaster, but I wouldn't call it underwhelming. Some players and rotations have disappointed but others have done great - you can't expect them all to get big scores. I only wish I had had Jesus as well as Sanchez this evening!

We knew who was going to have the doubles ages ago. I wildcarded in GWK30 as I felt that my team needed it, risen from ~150k to 13k since then, and have a team not too dissimilar from the template for this week. It's down to individual circumstance, but refusing to use the second wildcard until 35/36 seems like it was a mistake for many.

Assuming, this is last scoutcast. After 2 years with these chips,
What lessons learnt? i.e. Rules of thumb as you were for next year.
Does Ville Ronka's percieved "demise" from top spot, indicate a shift in the way they game should be played?
What types of managers have unexpectedly thrived?

Personally, I've seen a many i know shift from SKY to this fantasy league, partly due to the chips. However, success can be more due to chance than skill. Before it seemed, over a season about 90% skill, 10% luck. Seems now it's more like 75% skill, 25% luck.

Therefore any tips most welcome, to keep the edge.

Definetly worth talking about the dgw squad of 15 I feel. Worth it or not although this won't be clear until after the gw is finished and had Spurs nit lost to West Ham, it would have been very different for Chelsea and Spurs assets I feel.

But! In GW 27, it's wasn't advisable to have a full 11 as long as you had the key players who would return pts.

Could a bumper dgw be look at the same way in that as long as you have the key dgw players covered, you can be comfortable with the sgw players with a decent fixture. My 4 sgw players were Tekkers, Mawson, Siggy and King. 28pts. Ditched Coutinho Daniels and PVA for Sané Kompany Holding.

-12 for transfer and and currently need another 24pts from these 3 just to break even..

        Alonso(C)?
He's almost sure to start after his rest, CS very likely, on some FKs, assist potential and has looked like scoring a goal in most games of late. And last but not least, if SUN play like they did against SWA the score-line could be anything (watched that game in full and they were dreadful)!

I'd like to know if Mark is going to continue to work with the official site. Has it been a good experience for him? When I watch those shows I'm always on the verge of cringing since he stands out as trying to make them more interesting for serious players and less corny but I don't think that's the direction the rest of the team seem to want to go towards.

More of my two cents for what's worth (usually not much). ESPN seems to have a good group of guys covering EPL but no real FPL analyst. Matt Berry blazed the trail for fantasy NFL over there and really made fantasy analysis respectable. Maybe Mark can do the same thing for FPL over here in the states since it's getting really popular thanks to NBCSN showing all the matches and doing a good job at promoting EPL.

I think it's an excellent combination of information and entertainment.
Mark as the FPL expert and two other enthusiasts to ask him the questions and generally lighten it up a bit.

The Scoutcast used to be a bit similar when it was just Mark and Granville - Mark the expert and Granville for the rivalry and banter.

What if the WC/BB late stategy isn't flawed?

I WC'd 36, got 100, on 82 with 11 players to go (maybe!!) In 37 and a great team for the last GW. Caught my ML leader who was 70 pts ahead.

Ditching players for better players/potential, en masse at the business end, is still a winning strategy imo. Managing your own expectations, that you'll get the fairytale perfect outcome, is the thing!

The team I shipped in 36 was a good team, but save for a few, it's all worked out better, on balance. There are of course a couple of sgw'ers I could have held on to in retrospect.

Racing to the top of you ML at the 11th hour - no feeling like it.

I will defo do the same next year.

Continuing on from your discussion last week about the FPL going forward, the use of wing backs and Mark's concern of a large swathe of unusable players in the game (mainly central midfielders) does the Scoutcast think a solution to these issues for next season might be an addition of an extra classification for defensive midfielders and wing backs?
There has been a general shift from 3-tiered formations to 4-tiered recently in the actual game (albeit a much of a muchness practically) anyway, so what are your opinions if this change was to occur?

More classifications would be a bad thing IMO. It would make our squads less flexible and more restrictive.

But perhaps the BPS could be tweaked so that Kante gets a greater number of bonus points.

Wing-backs could be either midfielders or highly priced defenders without changing the classification system.

        2. should i use my last chip: all out attack in gw38

        3. should i transfer in players from the scout pick only or differentials only or a mix of both in gw38?

My first year playing FPL, I just wanted to express my thanks to the scoutcast and the posters on here. It's been a big learning curve, and without this site and input from others I reckon I'd still be languishing back around the millions. I literally had no idea how to play this game, joined through work and now on the verge of taking out the #1 spot in the ML!

My biggest noob moment of the year: Triple captaining Aguero...in GW8. -3 points. Classic. Had no idea what a DGW was back then...

        My question to the scoutcast:

What's been your biggest regret, looking back on the year that was?

        Something to play for ? = protecting a 1-0 lead = defenders

So far GW37 is proving to be a disappointment with all kinds of teams rotating or giving up. I recall playing a WC and then Benchboost for the late DGW last year also proving to be a damp squib. Is it time to evaluate what could have been the case playing the BB earlier when teams had something to play for and using the WC in GW37 when we perhaps have a better idea of beach teams, teams focused on other competitions etc? I'm not convinced of the template strategy.

Azpi has played every minute of every game this season, I think. Can't see that changing GW38. I'd fully expect Terry to play a full 90 mins in his last ever game at the Bridge and lift the trophy, even though he's done f all in winning it.

Logically that's the way to go, given that they are the only teams with something to play for, so are less prone to rotation.

        Mini leagues

Although at this stage any mini leagues I'm going to win are won and the rest aren't really viable to catch up now so hoping to improve rank

OR and classic ML, which normally come hand in hand.

H2H league is a garbage format. Always play it, always regret it.

Don't do h2h. Pointless as they are just random luck of the draw if you don't actually do anything to your team with the intention of winning a h2h match

Problem is it's the preferred format for most in my two ML's.

Hey all take it way more serious that the classic. As a result I often screw my OR for sake of H2H.

Really wish I could ditch it.

Great for office competitions, though. I would cane them all if it was just based on OR, but H2H makes it more fun - I am in 7th place in ours, despite having the best OR by more than 100 points.

        OR.

If you focus on the OR, the MLs take care of themselves. Too many forgo this advice.

          Agree up until a point.

At this stage of the season I look more at my mini league rivals to see which differentials they have.

It's one of the reasons I didn't get rid of Kane on my wildcard - didn't want to give a rival a free Kane differential. At the time I was eyeing up Costa and his fixtures - in hindsight Kane was the correct player to keep anyway but that wasn't necessarily my main reason for doing it

            As an example.

If I have a 30 point gap to chase in a mini league in the final week I may captain someone like Sturridge - a huge differential rather than the better owned players that may keep rank higher.

Obviously Sturridge doing well is good for rank but it's a huge risk.

This week as my mini leagues are wrapped up and I want to hold rank I'll probably play safe.

Owning the more popular players doesn't neccesarily mean you drop rank - you stand to lose more ground by not owning them.

Differentials only help with MLs not OR. I would argue diffs are largely unecessary as you can still gain a great rank without them.

I'm only talking about the last few weeks of the season though.

I agree differentials are generally not needed but at this stage they might be to win a mini league even though it's not the best option for rank.

You see the smart move was to do Kane->Costa as he never scores v Man U or away games. You got lucky but from a rank perspective, keeping Kane was the wrong move.

My point is the main reason I ended up keeping him was mini league.

As you say - probably the wrong move for rank, but I didn't want to give a differential to a rival not far behind me

          Disagree.

Two different styles. OR like Ville ronka plays for there is no pressure of making a strategic move . You can play without pressure . You don't have to think about blocking players or taking a captain risk

I genuinely never understand this question. The answer is always higher OR to me. The higher my OR, the more likely I will be to win my minleague. I mean, it's like saying whats more important, your mini league or having the most points possible. Surely the having the most points possible will win you the minileague?!

        I don't get £200 for top 1k finish.
