Community Round-up: World Cup Fantasy and FPL divide attention

As was the case last week, the Fantasy Football Scout Community’s attention has been split roughly down the middle with Fantasy World Cup approaching its climax and the launch of Fantasy Premier League 2018/19 provoking debate.

Rainer and the exquisitely named Ohhh Shola Ameobi helped bridge the two games with a look at the Premier League teams most affected by the ongoing tournament and when the players involved in the 2014 World Cup returned to domestic action.

We’ve got a round-up of the week’s hot topics, and the usual array of Community tables and competitions, in our regular article below.

The Hottest Topics

This time last week, we were midway through the World Cup quarter-finals and Legomane asked whether sticking or twisting was the best option regarding Fantasy World Cup captaincy.

G-Whizz returned with his regular clean sheet odds hot topic ahead of the semi-finals, while rainy mused on the anticlimax that was the yellow card count.

Rainer, meanwhile, helpfully pointed out that Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester United, Manchester City and Chelsea could be badly hit by their players returning late from international duty.

Before the semi-finals commenced, our Community discussed their transfers, captains and chips. With England and Belgium set to contest the third-place play-off later today, Siva Mohan looked at the rotation between the semi-finals and the fairly meaningless “bronze medal” match in the 2014 World Cup.

Legomane returned with a stick-or-twist semi-final special, as did G-Whizz with his last look at the clean sheet odds of this World Cup.

Ohhh Shola Ameobi examined the precedent of when the Premier League players involved in the semi-finals of the 2014 World Cup returned to their respective clubs.

World Cup ongoing or not, there’s no escaping the buzz around the FFS Community regarding the FPL launch.

Maximus Bonimus Pointimus asked if other managers adopted a player-orientated or structure-based approach to their Gameweek 1 squads, while Giggs Boson looked at the merits of both goalkeeper rotation and one Charlie Daniels.

Holding Matip held court while discussing five at the back and value according to position, while HamezMace floated the idea of a very early wildcard.

Rich2086 and Prøfeßor Bear gave a rundown of the Wolves side and warned us not to write off their assets, before CloudSky looked at some of the eye-catching fixture runs in the first quarter of the season.

Eden Wizard, meanwhile, suggested that Gabriel Jesus and Sergio Aguero could well play together at the start of the season.

Norman Conquest rounded up the latest additions to the FPL game and their respective prices.

Our “members only” hot topics concentrated on the Rate My Team launch and, using this tool, what the best team over the first six Gameweeks would be.

The Eliteserien summer break was also a source of discussion, with Dupuytrens looking ahead to the transfer window and European Under-19 Championship.

Community Tables

Our members have been hard at work this week, creating no fewer than 13 public stats tables. FPL Virgin, in particular, has been beavering away, creating nine of those tables including the best defence of last season and the talisman theory.

Wainright looked at defenders who made the most penalty box touches, while easilythebest listed the players who had the most “big chances” last season.

Hotdogs-for-tea, meanwhile, rounded up the defenders who created the most chances and were the most attacking in 2017/18.

Community Tournaments

Ahead of the third-place play-off and final, competition in the Fantasy Football Scout mini-league for the McDonald’s FIFA World Cup game is hotting up. The current top of the league reads as follows:

1. Sladuna (385 points)
2. Lincon316 (363 points)
3. Ludaslol (362 points)
4. SmokinBadger (361 points)
5=. Matt5138008 (358 points)
5=. McGettigan16 (358 points)

Our Mods and Cons league, meanwhile, shaped up like this:

1. ZidanRamos (336 points)
2. GSumner (323 points)
3. JohannesN (309 points)
4. Jackpenn (300 points)
5. Matzi11a (296 points)

The latest update for Frøgball, which uses combined Fantasy scores to represent different nations, is here.

If you are running a community tournament or are thinking about starting one, and would like the latest scores included in future Community Round-ups, please email us a summary of the current leaders and a link to your league, spreadsheet, or head to head competition at geoff@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk.

How are people planning their defence? There's a lot of value there with guys like Ward at 5m given their fixtures and the obvious manchester teams clean sheets etc. But with so many big money players surely it's worth considering 2 premium and a 4.5 rotation? New/CPal or West Ham/Watford for example.

      I'm breaking the 343 template and going 5 premium/semi-premium defenders (i.e. minimum 5m) in a 541/451 formation.

I'm currently on a 442 rotating keepers but tempted to go to 3 atb with a second rotating pair. All depends who looks on form in pre season I guess on how much funds I need.

      Mixing between 3-4-3 / 4-3-3

Will have a rotating pair of defenders and a rotating pair of GKs.

That's always been my goto or a 5m set and forget keeper with rotating pair. But since I joined here this season a lot seems to be made on premium defenders. I'm just curious now

Is it too risky for 451? I just think my players improve so much!

    Foster (Fabs)
    Coleman Robertson Cedric Daniels (Tomkins)
    Mahrez Sanchez Salah Jota Mkhi
    Aguero (4.5) (4.5)

Aubameyang is a far better pick than Sanchez.

If you can shave 0.5 off the rest of the team, Auba + 4.5 mid is a lot stronger than Sanchez + 4.5 forward individually And gives you much better squad balance

          Cairney great for 5m.

Walcott has a ton of potential under Silva, and with those fixtures.

I have a feeling Fabregas will be great under Sarri, but we'll have to watch pre-season.

I already have Tosun in my team but with Everton's early fixtures do you think it would be worth doubling up with him and Walcott?

Not sure on Tosun myself. Niasse did great for Silva at Hull.

Tosun started great (4 goals in first 7), but then tailed off for Everton (1 goal in 6)

A nailed Fabregas would be gold. Agree on Theo. I fondly remember captaining him for his hattrick on the last day of the season a few seasons back. For that he will always have an opportunity for a few games in my team no matter how frustrating he becomes.

Tosun could be an important player this year though, could be the new Jamie Vardy/Mahrez in being a 7.0-ish attacker who is actually very prolific

Yeah, we'll have to see how Silva, Sarri & Unai set up their teams in pre-season. There could be some gems in Everton, Chelsea and Arsenal.

For now I have a team I will keep for a while to see pre-season games and transfers. Morata can be gold with the new coach.

        (3-4-3)
        Ederson - 4.0
        Robertson - Coleman - Le Marchand - Diop - Wan-Bissaka
        Sanchez - Mane - Mahrez - Mkhi - Masuaku
        Firmino - Morata - Tosun

        Opinions are welcome.

I make Kennedy's points per game 4.4 but he is 3.9 in fpl. Can anyone explain where I have gone wrong please?

        Mins Played = 1023
        PTS = 51

        1023/90 = 11.36 games played
        51/11.36 = 4.48ppg

I think FPL use points per actual game played rather than points per 90 minutes, so if a player only plays for 5 minutes in a particular fixture, it counts as one game.

        3. Piggs Boson
          • 12 Years
          5 years, 9 months ago

You are measuring points per 90. FPL use points per appearance.

Points per 90 can skew data when players make brief cameos. If they come on for just 1 minute, they get 90 pts per 90 for that game. I prefer points per appearance, because it accounts for rotation and points given for minutes played etc.

If you plan to captain Salah week 1 and 2 is there any point in bringing in Aguero if thinking of transferring to Aubameyang in week 3 after Arsenal’s 2 tough (although that’s debatable) fixtures? May as well get Auba from outset. He is well capable of scoring against any opponents and avoids also uncertainty over Aguero/ Jesus. Mahrez or Sané sufficient City attack with Mendy if looks like nailed and Ederson in defence as 3 City players

However as a counter arguement, if Lacazette is starting as #9 and Auba is on the wing. I think id rather transfer to Lacazette in gw3 and save 1.5m

That's pretty well put! Kun is in my team but my team is partly a template of how I want to have my final spread of my funds so if Auba fires under the new manager in pre season he'll come in and leave me Mendy and Mahrez.

Think I'm settled on this until any big signings pre season form players show themselves in the coming weeks...

        Fab/Fos

        Mendy Robertson Douglas Ward (Peltier)

        Mahrez Salah Walcott Jota (Cairney)

        Kun Firmino (Kamara)

Mendy, Roberston and Douglas all effectively play as wingers anyway so between them it's likely an assist every week. Especially with Liv/City opening fixtures.

Allows for flexibility without ripping the team apart to accomodate any of the players mentioned in the first sentence.

Iv gone for 4.5 + PVA rather than Ward + Cairney.

Very similar to mine - I've gone for a 4.5 and 4.0 goalkeeper and downgraded Walcott/Jota to Deulofeu in order to get Coleman and Tomkins in too.

And will probably go for a 4.5 mid in order to get a better cheap 3rd striker.

Thinking of going Auba over Aguero - saves a transfer in gw3.

Robertson, Coleman, Jones/Bailly (once it's apparent who has won the shirt pre-season, José will be predictable with the defensive line-up, certainly for the weeks before the international break), starting Man City 5.5 - possibly La Porte/ Stones or Delph if Mendy gets injured. Tomkins

        Salah, Dilva, Pogba, Mkhy, Jota/Walcott

        Aguero/Aubameyang, Quaner, Kamara

Thoughts: 2 captaincy options in the team, with the intention of perma-captaining Salah. The rest of the team is selected on points to price value, the object of the game being to accrue the most points from the £100 million budget. The intention, therefore, is to optimise spend and to not necessarily buy the highest scoring players.

It's subject to change, but in my experience of playing the game the worst value players are the forwards, and the best are generally the mid-priced range players in defence and midfield.

Generally speaking, with few exceptions, players over £9 million will lose points to their price, and any player you do buy in this range have to be regular captaincy picks.

Would appreciate your thoughts or any suggestions?

To optimise defensive points, players will be rotated according to fixture, fixtures and not form being paramount. The opposite is the case with the attacking players - form is more important than fixture.

With that being said, the formation of the team will shift from 4-5-1 to 3-5-2 or 5-4-1.

Transfers will be focused on trying to maximise defensive returns as per the fixtures and catching the form of the premium priced players.

I like it. I think you should save 0.5 and get Ederson over a rotating Man City defender tho. Also reckon Bailly will be starting CB but like you said wait and see.

The problem with Ederson, IMO, is that he doesn't make enough save points, and therefore there's less chance of bonus, so you're totally reliant on clean sheet returns. Based on points projections over the season, De Gea is better value at 6.0 than Ederson at 5.5. But I know what you mean, there is a rotation worry at city in defence and City's opening fixtures do require cover

I'm in favour of Ederson - yes he will get fewer save points, but if you look at the stats for shots conceded and shots conceded in the box, City actually had a lot fewer than Utd last season, which could suggest City are favourites for more clean sheets this season. Then again, it could also show that De Gea will be getting more save points!
I think the fact that there are no other nailed City defenders makes him an even more important pick

When he signed for Utd a couple of years ago, he played at the Euros, had a week's training at Juventus before the new season, signed a few days before the opening game premier league game v Southampton. Everyone said, well, he won't play, and he did....and he played every game after that. Naturally fit player

Captaincy points are so important so it would be a gamble having only one captaincy option. It's also not as flexible a strategy as spreading funds in 2 captaincy slots. It could pay off but it would be a big risk IMO

I just wrote a big long reply to this but lost internet connection and it got wiped! D:

            Will try and summarise.

The strategy is spot on. Some of the individual picks I'm less keen on - Pogba still got world cup final, and Dilva not nailed, for example.
Would consider dropping Pogba for a bench midfielder and upgrading one of the forwards, for the sake of balance and flexibility. There is bound to be a bandwagon great-valued forward around the 7.0-mark that becomes available given the abundance of options we have, so I'd look at being able to get on that with fewer hits.

The Aguero/Auba debate is a very tough one! See below for a RMT where I've tried to include both. The problem here though is that it loses the points to price value that you mention a little bit, so both would have to do incredibly for it to be worthwhile.

In general, I expect you'll do well this season because you've got the right approach.

              Cheers for the excellent reply.

I honestly think Pogba is a great pick this season, for several reasons: last year he made 5.11 ppg, in what was a bad season for him, and a bad one for Utd in terms of attacking returns. At his price of 8.0 you'd be looking at 5.5 ppg from him to justify selection. If he hits that, you'll be on world number 1 pace in ff for the value he takes up in your squad, based on the last 5-10 years' results. I think with Sanchez having a full pre-season and Lukaku almost certainly going to improve after his first season, that should help Pogba's returns. More importantly, he's fixture proof because in difficult away games Utd shape up more defensively and that always pushes Pogba further up the pitch. With the signing of Fred, an excellent defensive midfielder...and with Magic and Herrera, I see Pogba playing less in a 2, which diminishes the probability of his returns, and more likely to be in a similar position he was for Juve, further up the pitch, perhaps on the left of centre, and primed to take advantage. He's also sure to play better than he did last season. One final thing, we know he's a nailed-on starter unless something changes. (I'm a Utd fan btw so follow his role in the team closely). He ticks all the boxes.

I know what you mean about Aguero and Aubameyang, it certainly would be nice to have both, other than Salah they are by far the best value premium players at their price based on recent seasons. The problem is that they need to hit 7.9 points ppg to justify inclusion if you're not captaining them. For a forward, this is practically impossible for them to do over the season (In Kane's best year a couple of seasons ago he was well short of this target for example) and extremely difficult to do it over a period of gameweeks. Last year they both made well under 7ppg despite having extremely good seasons (In Aubameyang's case over 12 games or so). So you have to captain them regularly if you have them. If not, they are costing you points to your optimum target, a target of 7.9ppg for the spend of 11 million which would propel you to the top 100 of the game for the last 5-10 seasons. They may make those points, but they're less likely to do so than other players, making them high risk low reward players IMO. So one is enough for the flexible captaincy pick, two is overkill if you have Salah - who IMO is by far the best premium player on the game per price, even if he doesn't quite match what he did last season.

I think you may be right on the 6.0 -7.0 forwards, that there's a fair chance one emerges from the pack. I'll have a rethink.

              Cheers again

I'm not playing the game this year but I would have thought the 3rd place play off is your best bet. There are usually goals in this fixture and you can have a look at the teamsheet before the deadline.

As far as the final is concerned, probably will be a tight affair the way France set up

So the issue is fitness rather than nailedness - but 5.0 for a half decent number 10 seems very tempting.

                    Ok, RMT time!

                    4-4-2:
                    Ederson, (4.0)
                    Robertson, Lovren, Bellerin, Bailly, (Peltier)
                    Salah(c), Willian, Ramsey, Deulofeu, (4.5)
                    Aguero, Auba, (Kamara)

                    Defence:
I really want a City defender, badly. Ederson is the only truly nailed one of these from GW1, so he's in. Mendy/Otamendi are both ridiculously tempting and have incredible potential, so if either of them look nailed from GW1 as permanent picks I'll get them, but knowing Pep, rotation will be rife, which is why Ederson is such a good pick.
Robertson is obviously a fab pick. Great chance of clean sheets AND attacking returns. Lovren there as a double up. At 5.0, he offers brilliant value in the third best defence in the league last season.
Arsenal have really nice fixtures (aside from the first two of course), and Bellerin also has great chances of both attacking returns and clean sheets, hence a good pick.
Utd had more clean sheets than anyone else last season. Bailly not necessarily nailed atm, but we should know this by the time the season starts, and it looks likely he will be favoured.
Final spot goes to a 4.0 (hopefully) playing defender as backup - Peltier looks likely atm.

                    Attack:
Salah is an obvious permacap pick - don't want to try and be clever.
Willian and Ramsey both have potential to be incredible value at 7.5 and both managers have stated they are important in their plans.
Most of my drafts have seen me try and decide between one of Aguero/Auba - then I thought, why not have both? The issue here is that it affects the squad balance, so I'm not sure if it's worth it. I know both are great picks, but given I'll be capping Salah every week, am I better off spreading the cash?
Deulofeu is someone I know very little about - I've just seen that he's popular on here. Can anyone let me know some more info?

                    Formation:
I've seen a lot of studies advocating premium defence and I'm all in for it. I think that 5 at the back is a little too much for me though, so I've settled nicely in the middle.

                    Feedback very much appreciated!

                      I rate it.
With salah being essential and eating lots of our budget i think 4-4-2 is by far the best starting formation.

Agree with most your points, however im pretty sure Lovren wont start GW1. Got to wait and see on Chelsea with Willian also obviously. But it looks good

Ah crap I forgot about Croatia in the final. Might have to put a bit more money in the back then as there aren't any other big team nailed 5.0s 🙁

                          Auba -> Firmino
Lovren -> Whoever you want ?

Then you can swap Kun to Auba if needed

                        My thoughts are:

                        - I think double Liverpool defence is a waste & would rather have double Liverpool attack. Robertson is a great pick so Lovren has to go imo
                        - Also think Mendy could prove to be gold this year so having Ederson could mean needing extra FT’s to reshuffle, but in fairness Ederson could be a great pick. I’d just prefer a 4.5
                        - not sure how arsenal’s Defence will do under the new man, and Bailly is a selection risk imo, albeit when he plays he will be super value at 5.5
                        - in midfield like he two 7.5’s as they give you lots of flexibility & options should things need to change and Salah is v necessary.
                        - not sure on Deulofeu, and the forwards are overkill imo as you have Salah for perma captain.

                        - so overall I would maybe look at Auba, Aguero, Lovren, Bailly, Bellerin, Deulofeu > Firmino, Tosun/Zaha/Arnie/Austin, Alonso/Azpi/Mendy, Cedric, Tomkins, KDB/Sané/Mahrez

But your team could do very well!

Not sure about Deulofeu either as he has hardly been amazing in other seasons. I like your team. I would get rid of Willian though if your justification is he will be first choice at Chelsea as it looks like he will be going. If you're concerned about balance, you could sell Auba and get Firmino. Their opening fixtures are great.

Would you go long term for:

                      A) Ederson Azpi Boly
                      B) Fabianski Otamendi Davies

                      Thoughts on this :
                      Ederson - 4.0
Robertson - Coleman - Cederic - Tomkins -Peltier
Salah -Hazard -Sane - Deu - Cairney
                      Auba - Wilson - Jimenez

I wouldn't trust Hazard to start the first couple of games.

I mean if I were Chelsea manager he would be playing, because these guys are professional athletes and don't need an extended rest, but I'm not.

So i've created this team with 2 premium Forwards to easily help me bring in Kane-And I don't think it has compromised the team too much what are your thoughts.

                      Pickford
                      Robertson Cedric Tomkins Azpilicueta

But to be honest, with Firmino and Salah this year, is there any real need for an 11.0 striker?

Well my thinking was to Bring in Kane 13mill and Firminio 9.5 hence the two 11 mill Striker

Good option if you have the FTs because Firmino isn't 100% to start the first game as far as we know, whereas Aubameyang and Aguero are, as far as we know. If Aguero plays most weeks, however, I fancy the 11.0s to do better than the Kane-Firmino split 🙂

Aubameyang and Aguero are likely to outscore Firmino imo, so there's that.

I’m flexible with changing that 7m striker bracket.

This is purely down to opinion, no one really knows until the season starts.

For me Mahrez has enormous potential to be a major bandwagon in the first few weeks. With Sterling still in Russia, Mahrez will likely start in his favoured RW position, and will be getting all those big chances Sterling got last season. In Pep's system, I think Sane and Silva will create more than score, but whoever takes up that RW position will get the goals. Who knows if he'll keep the same system when Mendy Jesus and Aguero are all available though...

Good argument. Inclined to agree, and even he gets rotated after a few weeks, we can maybe make a bit of cash, get a few points while he does play, and move him on

                              Aye, my thinking too.

But who knows with Total Football. Anyone can score from any position with that style, I just think it's slightly favoured towards the right hand side. I've read a lot about Pep, and he insists on tilting the opposition defence one way, before switching to the other. He chooses to push on the left, then crosses to the right - loosely speaking.

Aye pretty reliable, though obviously not 100%.

I'd say a bit less reliable for this game though. It'd be hard for any site/media to get it spot on with nothing on the line.

Yep that’s true. I was expecting more rotation to be honest.

                                Cheers!

                          Southgate said:
"It won’t be exactly the same starting XI, but we want ideally to make as few changes as possible. “One or two injuries, one or two with a bit of illness. We have high motivation to perform and finish with a medal at a World Cup, which only one English team have ever done."

So seems same England except for Trippier (as he looked pretty badly injured) and maybe a couple other.

                            Cheers. Maybe Walker as well.

Don’t even need it with 4G. But I’ll need some tinkering time since I’m only 2 points ahead of 2nd and 7 ahead of 3rd.

I suppose I can take an extended bathroom break and blame it on the meat.

Mislintat is busy with the transfer of Dembele. It's not sure if the Arsenal board would allow such big transfer. Just a rumour for now, should be a incredible transfer.
