Sterling in goalscoring mood ahead of GW9 as Kane delivers two assists

We continue to scrutinise the international fixtures involving Fantasy Premier League assets with this look at Monday night’s matches.

Over half of the FPL players in action yesterday evening were present in Seville, as England produced a smash-and-grab performance to register a 3-2 victory over Spain.

Raheem Sterling, Marcus Rashford and Harry Kane all delivered attacking returns as England tore apart a Spanish defence containing Marcos Alonso and Jonny Otto in an astonishing first half, before Gareth Southgate’s side were forced to dig deep after the break.

Sokratis is an injury doubt for Arsenal after being substituted with an ankle injury while playing for Greece, while Xherdan Shaqiri registered an assist in Switzerland’s 2-1 win over Iceland.

READ MORE: Which FPL assets are on international duty this week and when.

Spain 2-3 England

  • Jordan Pickford (£4.9m) – 90 minutes
  • Kieran Trippier (£6.3m) – 85 minutes
  • Trent Alexander-Arnold (£5.2m) – 5 minutes
  • Joe Gomez (£5.1m) – 90 minutes
  • Harry Maguire (£5.5m) – 90 minutes
  • Ben Chilwell (£5.0m) – 90 minutes
  • Harry Winks (£5.5m) – 90 minutes
  • Nathaniel Chalobah (£4.5m) – 1 minute
  • Eric Dier (£4.8m) – 90 minutes
  • Ross Barkley (£5.7m) – 76 minutes
  • Kyle Walker (£6.6m) – 14 minutes
  • Raheem Sterling (£11.1m) – 90 minutes
  • Harry Kane (£12.5m) – 90 minutes
  • Marcus Rashford (£6.7m) – 90 minutes
  • Lewis Dunk (£4.4m) – 0 minutes
  • James Maddison (£6.9m) – 0 minutes
  • Marcus Bettinelli (£4.4m) – 0 minutes
  • David de Gea (£5.9m) – 90 minutes
  • Jonny (£4.5m) – 90 minutes
  • Marcos Alonso (£7.0m) – 90 minutes
  • Alvaro Morata (£8.7m) – 18 minutes
  • Cesar Azpilicueta (£6.4m) – 0 minutes
  • Kepa Arrizabalaga (£5.5m) – 0 minutes

Those Fantasy bosses considering a move for Raheem Sterling ahead of Manchester City’s hugely appealing home fixture against Burnley this Saturday would have been further encouraged by the England winger’s brace in the 3-2 victory over Spain on Monday evening.

Lining up on the right side of a front three in a 4-3-3 formation, as he has done for City on countless occasions, Sterling looked far happier in Gareth Southgate’s new system than he had in a 3-5-2 at the World Cup and ended his three-year, 27-match international goal drought after 16 minutes of the UEFA Nations League encounter in Seville.

The confidence that Sterling displayed in lashing home England’s opener underscored his current form in front of goal; the City winger latching onto Marcus Rashford‘s excellent pass to fire past David de Gea in a finish reminiscent of Michael Owen’s strike against Argentina in 1998.

Sterling capped off England’s victory with a trademark tap-in from inside the six-yard box after a cut-back from Harry Kane.

The record will show that Kane has now gone seven England games without a goal but the Spurs striker was integral to the Three Lions’ success, also registering the assist for Rashford’s goal with a superb through-ball for the Manchester United forward.

Kane’s hold-up play, movement and defensive work were exemplary throughout, though of course, that will be of little interest to his Fantasy owners whose primary concern is his goal threat. Once again, Kane flattered to deceive on that front, with his only shot being a blocked effort shortly before Sterling’s second goal.

Kane’s performance was almost Olivier Giroud-esque (in the nicest possible way), with Rashford and Sterling the beneficiaries of his selfless display up top and the space left behind when Kane dropped deep.

While the steely Eric Dier was perhaps the pick of England’s midfield three, Ross Barkley and Harry Winks put in tidy displays, with the Chelsea midfielder’s vision key to his country’s third goal.

Joe Gomez, whose first-team place is far from assured at Liverpool in the medium term with Dejan Lovren and Joel Matip back to fitness, delivered an excellent performance at centre-back alongside Harry Maguire, who would have worried his FPL owners by picking up a knock midway through the second half – the Leicester centre-back shook off that “injury” though to finish the match without any apparent discomfort.

Ben Chilwell and Kieran Trippier had to call upon their defensive attributes in a backs-to-the-wall second-half display but both excelled at full-back, with the Spurs right-back displacing his former team-mate Kyle Walker from the starting XI.

Jordan Pickford‘s distribution was key to two of England’s goals, though as with any ball-playing shot-stopper, the Everton goalkeeper had a nervy moment or two last night – including one incident in which he was lucky to avoid a red card and concede a penalty for a tug on Rodrigo Moreno.

For Spain, Marcos Alonso and Jonny were as culpable as the two centre-halves between them as England’s dovetailing frontline repeatedly pulled the Spanish back four out of position.

Doubts have always been there about the defensive side to Alonso’s game, though the Chelsea left-back at least gave heart to his Fantasy owners by getting forward to join the Spanish attack, firing three shots wide and creating as many chances for his team-mates. Jonny also recorded a hat-trick of key passes, with the two full-backs racking up 15 crosses between them.

De Gea, meanwhile, conceded from every one of the shots on target he was faced with but could hardly be blamed for any of the goals.

Alvaro Morata was handed a brief cameo off the bench, but his Chelsea team-mates Cesar Azpilicueta and Kepa Arrizabalaga remained unused substitutes.

For England, John Stones and Jordan Henderson (both £5.3m) sat out the game through suspension, while Danny Welbeck (£6.5m), Alex McCarthy (£4.5m), Danny Rose (£5.9m), James Tarkowski (£5.0m) and Luke Shaw (£5.1m) had all pulled out of Gareth Southgate’s squad last week.

Finland 2-0 Greece

  • Sokratis Papasthopoulos (£5.2m) – 45 minutes

Arsenal may have an injury concern at centre-half for next Monday’s meeting with Leicester City after Sokratis was taken off at half-time of Greece’s 2-0 defeat to Finland with an apparent ankle injury.

No word on the Arsenal stopper’s sprain has been forthcoming from the club, but reports in the media suggest the Greek international is a doubt for the Gameweek 9 encounter with the Foxes.

Rob Holding (£4.4m) and Shkodran Mustafi (£5.4m), then, could be set to continue at the heart of the Gunners’ defence for the visit of Claude Puel’s side.

Iceland 1-2 Switzerland

  • Johann Berg Gudmundsson (£6.0m) – 90 minutes
  • Gylfi Sigurdsson (£7.4m) – 90 minutes
  • Granit Xhaka (£5.3m) – 90 minutes
  • Xherdan Shaqiri (£7.0m) – 90 minutes
  • Fabian Schar (£4.7m) – 90 minutes
  • Florent Hadergjonaj (£4.4m) – 0 minutes

Xherdan Shaqiri might be pressed into action this weekend if one (or both) of Sadio Mane (£9.9m) or Mohamed Salah (£12.8m) is ruled out with injury and the Swiss midfielder signed off his international week with an assist in his country’s 2-1 UEFA Nations League victory in Iceland.

Shaqiri was deployed as a “number 10” for Switzerland and was at the heart of his country’s play, on duty at set-piece situations and creating more chances than any other player on show in Reykjavik – one of which was a glorious opportunity that Mario Gavranovic spurned.

Shaqiri’s assist was somewhat fortuitous – the Liverpool midfielder’s flicked, back-heeled shot finding its way instead to Michael Lang, who fired home from close range.

Granit Xhaka collected the assist for Switzerland’s opener, a cross that Haris Seferovic nodded in.

Gylfi Sigurdsson wasn’t on the scoresheet but the Everton midfielder, who along with Paul Pogba has fired off more shots than any other FPL midfielder from Gameweek 5 onwards, was again not afraid to try his luck from distance, registering five attempts on goal.

Johann Berg Gudmundsson also played 90 minutes for the hosts, creating two chances for his team-mates.

Newcastle United’s Fabian Schar lasted the course for the Swiss, while Florent Hadergjonaj was an unused substitute.

Croatia 2-1 Jordan

  • Dejan Lovren (£4.9m) – 45 minutes

Dejan Lovren played the first half of Croatia’s 2-1 friendly win over Jordan and was one of three players substituted at the interval, with no suggestion that the withdrawal was anything other than an opportunity for coach Zlatko Dalic to look at fringe players in his squad.

Mateo Kovacic (£5.9m), meanwhile, was one of several high-profile names given the night off by Dalic.

Bosnia and Herzegovina 2-0 Northern Ireland

  • Craig Cathcart (£4.5m) – 90 minutes
  • Jonny Evans (£4.9m) – 90 minutes
  • Steven Davis (£4.7m) – 90 minutes
  • Asmir Begovic (£4.5m) – 0 minutes

Three FPL assets with ownerships of 1% or less were in action in Sarajevo last night.

Craig Cathcart and Jonny Evans were Northern Ireland’s centre-back pairing for the 2-0 defeat to Bosnia and Herzegovina and appeared to have come through the UEFA Nations League clash unscathed – good news for Watford and Leicester City who will both have centre-halves suspended for their respective Gameweek 9 fixtures.

Cathcart had a late header saved by Ibrahim Sehic, whose inclusion meant that Asmir Begovic sat out this match on the bench.

Southampton’s forgotten man Steven Davis also completed the full 90 minutes for the visitors.

    RMWCT...

    Fabianski, Ryan
    Alonso, TAA, Doherty, Jonny, AWB
    Salah, Hazard, Sterling, Richarlison, Schürrle
    Arnautovic, Mitrovic, Jiménez

Decided to go light upfront, but slightly worried about having a benching problem every week.

If you had continuous bench boost it would be decent, but as you said, bench headaches expected.

Far too light up front. Jimenez to 4.5 if you plan on playing 3-5-2 and try upgrading Mitro to at least a Vardy / Firmino / Laca if you don't want to pay the Kun or Kane money.

looks fine, all 3 strikers are good value. whether you have 3 premium mids, 3 premium strikers or a mixture of the two really doesn't make any difference to your total points tally.

The International Break definitely gives you some time to pause & reflect over your season so far & it's always nice to look back & analyze what were some of the transfers (or non-transfers) that have got you to where you are right now. And of course, what might have been. After all, "Hindsight" is definitely a beautiful thing.

      Bottomed.

I want to get rid of Mane (for KDB soon) and of Kane.

Get Sterling as a placeholder for KDB or just hold and save two transfers but also miss out on Raheem's points this GW?

Get Salah instead? (assume he's fit)

Ship Kane? I'm considering Firmino. He'll effortlessly haul points during this nice run of fixtures without even playing well.

We can do that back and forth every week. I did Kun to Kane and will now likely ship Kane to someone who actually plays in the final third. But not Kun.

    10. FPL turning points - the big decisions
      Mr. Hindsight
      • Fantasy Football Scout Member
      • 5 Years
      5 years, 6 months ago

Looking back at the season, I see clearly 3 major turning points for FPL managers, moments that either propelled managers to greater heights or that brought them crashing down to earth. Of course there would be a lot of managers for whom there would be other major turning points, but for a large number of managers these were the moments that have so far defined their season.

      1- GW2 Sergio Aguero (3 Goals, 1 Assist, 3 Bonus) - 20 points:
So there were 3 major categories of managers for this turning point
A- The ones that didn't own Aguero (God bless them)
B- The ones that owned Aguero but didn't captain him
C- The ones that owned Aguero & captained him

This first turning point of the season resulted in a huge point swing for managers especially for those who didn't own him.
The difference between every grade here is 20 points for a manager, which is huge in FPL terms that too by a single player in 1 GW.

      2- GW4&5 Eden Hazard (4 Goals, 6 Bonus) - 31 points:
Categorizing this turning point is slightly tougher as a lot more combinations are possible. But since this analysis is targeted
for the masses, I've narrowed it down to the following 4:

A- The ones that didn't own Hazard for both GWs (like me)
B- The ones that didn't own him for GW4 but bought him for GW5 but didn't give him the armband (What were you thinking?)
C- The ones that owned him for only GW5 & captained him
D- The ones that owned him for both the games & captained him in GW5

This was one of the turning points which resulted in a huge tectonic shift in rankings for managers. This turning point was one of those which definitely resulted in at least a 40 point swing for managers because ALMOST everyone who had him for GW5 would have had their armband on him. As for those nostradamic managers that got him in for both GWs & captained him in at least one of them, the swing would be 51 points at least (assuming they would have captained him for GW5). Out of all the 3 turning points, this one most definitely resulted in a huge rank shift for managers since the ones who had a solid start to the season were skeptical of doing this (some of them still would've) & for the ones who didn't start well saw this as an opportunity to catch-up on others (most notably Mark Sutherns) & boy they did or what.

      3- GW7&8 Harry Kane (2 Goals, 0 Assist, 3 Bonus) - 14 points:
This was one of those which favored the ones that stood firm on their belief, resisted the temptation & kept their heads when all others around them were losing theirs. Irrespective of whether you got him in for 1 GW or 2, I think we can safely say that the move was not a success, not even close, even a disaster possibly. Another assumption which would hold true for most managers is that they got him in for a hit. Here are a few possible scenarios regarding this transfer:

A- The ones that got him in for GW8 & captained him (Highly unlikely someone would've brought him in & not captain him, but if you were one of them, then, you're the man)
B- The ones that got him in for GW7&8 but captained him only for GW8
C- The ones that got him in for both GWs & captained him in both
D- The ones that didn't get him in at all

Most of the people who made this move, either in GW7 or 8, were the ones who didn't get Hazard in for GW4&5(like myself) even though they had the hunch about his hauls. This transfer would at best left you even-stevens if you captained him in both GWs, possibly worse off if you had him for both GWs but captained him in only GW8 & definitely worse off if you got him in for just GW8.
Feel free to discuss your travails & delight about your season so far.
      P.S. I was 1C, 2A, 3B

Had Aguero but didn't captain him.

Bought Haz in GW4, didn't captain him this season yet.

Bought Kane after his hauls and captained him in his blank last week.

Chased points by buying Doherty this GW.

Owned Sterling as a differential, he first was rested and then he blanked as my captain. Sold him and then he started hauling.

From now on I'm buying players who I think are ready to haul and not those who hauled last week. I'll also listen to less advice from casuals who are always on the same bandwagon.

not captaining aguero gw2 was a small mistake based on the info available at the time, not a huge one

not captaining hazard gw4/5 is arguably not a mistake considering city played newcastle/fulham at home

captaining kane last week was a no-brainer

bringing in doherty is a no-brainer

          don't be results orientated

the rationale behind owning sterling as a differential and not because he's one of the best players in the league is the biggest mistake here

I totally get it, look every move (or non-move) that failed had a very justified reason to succeed. I am not criticizing people for making the moves, I was just keen to know which decisions have decided your decisions. 1C, 2B and 3A. Mostly good apart from the one week punt on Kane (c). Would've been nice to captain Hazard in GW5 but I'm happy enough to have owned him. Plenty didn't.

My god, you're doing exceedingly well, for someone who got 2 out of the "wrong". I guess, others should definitely have a look at your team. You've not really followed the template, yet have done better than most of us here.

😀 Yeah, if I'd have just captained Hazard that gameweek, I'd be wholly satisfied with he season so far, despite other mistakes like benching Mendy and AWB in GW1, etc, etc. Still, 2B is better than 2A, so it ain't too bad 😉 . Onwards and upwards.

Hazard captain that pick would probably have you close to 3k I guess. If not further up.

Meh. They're not that big as not owning Mendy/Alonso at the beginning or Mane over the first 4 weeks.

Everything you can make back if you caught even some of those bandwagons.

Didn't captain Hazard in GW5 because Mcy were playing vs FUL (back then most shots conceded, and still dumpster tier defense) and Aguero was actually captain's poll leader.

Absolutely. You can make up for everything that early in the season. Even Mendy/Alonso or Mane.
Captaining Aguero was I guess the obvious choice.

Hazard - 'ALMOST everyone who had him for GW5 would have had their armband on him.' - Aguero was at home to Fulham and most people captained him - even Hazard owners. Mark saw a decent opportunity to go differential (maybe partly due to desperation) and it worked well, but most people didn't do the same.

Yeah that part is off the mark. Aguero was the popular captain choice that week even for many of those with Hazard.

Yeah I realize now that at home to Fulham was at that point a better fixture for Man City than Cardiff at home to Chelsea. Caught up with Joe's "Let's be fair to Cardiff..."

😀 well they did keep the mighty Harry Kane out! I got Hazard in GW4 but not sure I even really considered captaining him in GW5 tbh, which looks a bit stupid now, but Aguero seemed obvious at the time

I know. It's just that looking back in "Hindsight" Hazard looks the more obvious move to me. Joe takes the credit again, "Let's be fair to Cardiff"

with hindsight it's probably still a 50/50, maybe 60/40 in favour of Hazard when taking into account gametime - but back then a 20-pointer was much more likely for Aguero than Hazard - not bothered one bit about that decision. But kudos to Jonty, they are terrible 😀

Captained Aguero vs HUDD, missed Hazard's haul, but recouped some of that by ignoring Kane & having Haz as a (relative) differential captain when I finally got him in last GW. Happy enough with how it's gone so far.

The aguero one was probably an oversight on my part. The other 2 though I don't think a hash was made, just bad luck and heavily punished for marginal calls.

          Can I add a far more fundamental one;

Budget defense(x3) vs big hitter defense (x3) vs big hitter defense (x4)

Having 4 big defenders has almost carried me at times this season. If I'd started off with something like my usual 6.0, 5.0, 4.5, 4.5, 4.0 I would have been nowhere and it would have needed a WC to fix.

1C (This gave me a second successive centurry and took me into the top thousand for the first time ever, at OR 198)
2A (My worst GW of the season so far. Also left Fraser's 18 points on the bench and dropped from OR 406 to OR 4544 as a result)
3D (Avoided the Kane trap, but failed to captain Hazard or to own Doherty in GW8 so only got a small green arrow).

Aguero had a poor away record, especially against Liverpool.
He's usually a captaincy candidate at home, but sometimes benchable away - provided you have a strong bench and ten other outfield players who might outscore him that game-week.
Ten of my outfield players did indeed outscore him in GW8 - and two others equalled his score - so perhaps I ought to have benched Arnautovic as well instead of Fraser!
I could have sold him instead for one game-week (as many others did) and then brought him back for GW9, but I preferred to use these transfers to improve other parts of my squad and to bring in an alternative captain candidate (Trippier).

          I captained Aguero GW 2 🙂

The move Salah to Hazard from GW 4-8 was the one I strongly considered but never did in the end. Still hurts 🙁

I did however bring in Hazard (C) for Salah last week and avoided Kane altogether 🙂

The lows always seem to outweigh the highs but you gotta take the bad with the good.

I was also pretty keen for that Salah to Hazard move but just didn't have the balls in the end. Then gathered courage to bring Kane in for 2 GWs, less spoken about it the better.

Captained Hazard in 4 and 5

Haven't touched Kane this season (have Laca, nice captain for that Kane v Cardiff week)

          1C, 2D, 3A : captained Mane GW1 (32pts), captained Aguero GW2 (40pts), Hazard GW5(40pts) and Kane GW8 (2pts). Small aguero returns in GW4 and GW7. Poor 3pt captains GW3&6 (Mane and hazard)
Rest of team fairly poor. 180k TV104.5 SV102.2. GW3 shocking 26 pts total team. GW4 WC incoming Haz and Alonso. Target top 25k

GW1 was a cross roads point for some...plenty picked up 80-100+, whilst some of us failed to break 50, even if only just straying slightly from the template...

True. It was kind of strange the way some of the premium defenders, turned it on & then Aguero's 20 points in the next week meant a lot of people with 80+ points in both GWs

          1B - Had Aguero, didn't cap
          2A - Didn't have Hazard
          3D - Didn't have Kane

Still having a good start, but jumping on Hazard earlier than what I did would have been better for sure.

Looking at the comments of people here & their current ranking it's clear that people who didn't jump on Hazard early have struggled to make it up elsewhere.

I got in Kane and maddison for mane and zaha (had hazard & had sold Salah before his game against Spurs)
& I believe it was a net positive definitely.

          Nice post.

1C, 2A, 3A. Kane move was the worst b/c I would have captained Hazard in GW8. Have already shipped Kane out in a "rage transfer" as Andy would say.

My best start ever is still going ok, but out of the top 10K and rivals chipping away at my ML lead. Have to finally learn not chase the points as much! Just need to know who's going to haul before they haul... easy enough, right.

Not captaining aguero still hurts. Not captaining Kane in GW7 also. Two times i went halfway, should’ve gone all the way with both moves (captaining Kun and Kane). OR would’ve look quite sweet i guess.

I'm late to this conversation, but I like the hindsight.

          I was 1C, 2D, 3D

I think 1C would have been a greater shift, except a majority of managers owned Kun, and captained him, so the effect in rank wasn't as great as 2D. But 2D and 3D have more variables involved because it's a little later in the season, and some of the differentials really shown in game weeks 7&8 (Laca, for example).

            1C
2 - owned for both, didn't captain him for either

Got Hazard in GW3 so can't complain about not captaining him for the big one

          Fabianski
          Alonso Smalling Wan-Bis Bellerin
          Salah Walcott Richarlison Hazard
          Aguero Zaha

          Bench: Hennessy Bennett Elneny Success

Have 1.7 itb with 1 FT.

          Salah/Walcott to Mane/Sterling? For -4
What would you do if Salah is declared fit? Thinking Smalling to Robertson.

          Couple of questions:
          A) Shaw > Chilwell?
          B) KDB or Sterling?
          Thanks!

A is hard to answer without seeing the rest of your team. Could be better to downgrade to fund or upgrade.

            B is Sterling.

Predicted Arsenal lineup against Leicester? I'm going with one change:

          .....Aubameyang Lacazette
          Iwobi Xhaka Torreira Mkhitaryan
          Monreal Holding Mustafi Bellerin
          ..................Leno

Which would leave Ozil as a plan B if the team is unable to break Leicester down. But the above team has pace to counter which might be more useful against Leicester. Perhaps Welbeck could retain his place at the expense of Auba, Laca or Mkhi, and Ramsey could return at the expense of anyone besides Torreira.

With Emery focusing more on adapting to the strengths and weaknesses of the opponent than Wenger, Arsenal may continue to be difficult to predict for some time. I'm particularly worried as I own Ozil and Ramsey, who both may not start again, and Lacazette, who also benchable. I'm hoping the Team News page is correct, with Iwobi, Mkhi and Welbeck dropping out for Ramsey, Ozil and Aubameyang.

Yeah I'm hoping he slots in but he doesn't fit into the system that worked last week, unless he replaces Xhaka, but that's not a great idea against a potent Leicester. Or maybe it is if Xhaka is going to keep giving the ball away.

In Ramsey's favour is that, despite score 5 goals, Arsenal still didn't look a total unit, and they could use him to help glue the team together. I saw Wrighty describe Ramsey as the main man for Arsenal. If there's one playyer the team revolves around, Silva at City, Pogba at United, Salah at Liverpool, it's Ramsey at Arsenal.

That pace is going to ruin us 🙁

Telling you now, the goals you score against us on the counter are going to be the easiest you score all season...

You're only serving to worry me that Ozil won't start. I'll probably have to sell him instead of Pogba, even though I planned to bench Pogba this week :/ Hopefully the game is exciting as it's expected to be, but Emery could have done his research and worked 100% of the time on countering the counter. i.e. sitting back not pressing high and making mistakes.
