Newcastle count the cost of FA Cup victory after injuries and extra time

Newcastle United progressed to the fourth round of the FA Cup on Tuesday night after edging past Blackburn Rovers in their third-round replay at Ewood Park.

The victory was the Magpies’ first in seven competitive matches but came at a price ahead of their crucial Gameweek 23 encounter with Cardiff City on Saturday.

We’ll round up the main Fantasy talking points and injury updates from the six-goal thriller in Lancashire.

Blackburn Rovers 2-4 Newcastle United

  • Goals: Sean Longstaff (£4.5m), Callum Roberts, Joselu (£4.8m), Ayoze Perez (£6.1m)
  • Assists: Joselu, Jacob Murphy (£4.7m), Fabian Schar (£4.6m), Matt Ritchie (£5.8m)

Newcastle’s injury list lengthened after their success over Blackburn in last night’s FA Cup third-round replay, with Jamaal Lascelles (£4.7m) and Ciaran Clark (£4.5m) having to be withdrawn on fitness grounds.

Isaac Hayden (£4.3m) also picked up a knock in extra-time but the Newcastle manager at least had fairly positive news on all three of his walking wounded:

We have to assess them over the next couple of days.

Lascelles? I don’t think it is very serious. We had to make a substitution and we did what we needed to get through.

Clark went off at half-time with a knock to the knee but we will see if he is fine. I don’t think it will be serious.

(Isaac) Hayden was fine.

Benitez added that Lascelles’ issue was a hamstring strain – which he strangely played on with for ten minutes before being hooked – and said “we will see” regarding the club captain’s recovery.

The Magpies were already missing Jonjo Shelvey (£5.3m), Mohamed Diame (£4.8m), Ki Sung-yueng (£4.7m), Paul Dummett (£4.4m), Karl Darlow (£4.4m) and Yoshinori Muto (£5.6m) through injury or unavailability, with Kenedy (£4.8m) added to the sidelined contingent ahead of Tuesday’s tie after being ruled out with a minor nail problem.

Benitez said of the on-loan Chelsea midfielder:

He had a problem with his nail and the reality is he cannot put boots on – as soon as he puts the boots on, he is feeling pain.

He is getting better and I think in one or two days he will be OK.

While Newcastle are blessed with an abundance of centre-backs, Clark and Lascelles were two of the three stoppers who lined up at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.

Florian Lejeune (£4.4m), the third member of that defensive trio in the 2-1 defeat to Chelsea, was handed a breather at Ewood Park as Federico Fernandez (£4.4m) and Fabian Schar (£4.6m) played all 120 minutes of Newcastle’s extra-time victory.

Schar had initially been deployed in central midfield and impressed in that role alongside youngster Sean Longstaff (£4.5m), who was starting his second successive competitive match for the Magpies as Benitez’s availability issues in the engine room continue.

The Switzerland international ended up at centre-half after injuries to Clark and Lascelles and there are some Newcastle fans who would argue that the Magpies are actually a stronger side with Fernandez, Schar and/or Lejeune at centre-back, such has been the indifferent season that Lascelles has had on Tyneside.

The fact that the Magpies were pushed to extra time by Blackburn four days before their relegation six-pointer against Cardiff may not be quite as significant as it seems, either.

Fantasy managers who own assets of the Bluebirds would have been heartened to see Schar, Fernandez, Longstaff and Matt Ritchie (£5.8m) each last at least 109 minutes, though Benitez made eight changes to his starting XI for Tuesday night’s encounter and the likes of Salomon Rondon (£5.7m), Martin Dubravka (£5.0m), DeAndre Yedlin (£4.5m) and Lejeune didn’t feature at all at Ewood Park.

Christian Atsu (£5.1m), Ayoze Perez (£6.1m) and Hayden, meanwhile, all had their minutes managed after coming on as substitutes.

That Newcastle were pushed beyond 90 minutes at all would have annoyed Benitez, with the Magpies having raced into a 2-0 lead after 20 minutes thanks to goals from youngsters Longstaff and Callum Roberts.

The visitors were pegged back before half-time though, with Blackburn’s equaliser coming from a corner kick.

Newcastle’s vulnerability at set plays this season has been well-documented and the fact that they conceded another goal from a dead-ball situation will interest Fantasy managers who own the likes of Sol Bamba (£4.5m) and Sean Morrison (£4.7m) ahead of Cardiff’s visit to St. James’ Park this weekend.

Despite register attacking returns, Joselu (£4.8m) – who put Newcastle 3-2 up in extra time with a rebound that looked offside – and Jacob Murphy (£4.7m) didn’t particularly impress on rare starts and wouldn’t appear to be in the shake-up for a starting role for the visit of Neil Warnock’s troops.

Youngsters Roberts, Freddie Woodman (£4.0m) and Jamie Sterry (£4.0m) will also be back on the bench at best this weekend, though Javier Manquillo (£4.3m) was trialled at left-back in the absence of Dummett and may continue there this weekend if Benitez switches from a wing-back system to a 4-2-3-1/4-4-1-1.

Substitutes Perez and Atsu will likely return to the attacking midfield positions behind Rondon on Saturday and it was the Spanish forward who capped off Newcastle’s victory, latching onto a Ritchie pass and firing a rising shot past home goalkeeper David Raya from an acute angle.

Benitez commented on the game:

The commitment and the team effort is there and you have to be pleased and carry confidence forward when you score four goals. The main thing is to get three points against Cardiff.

You wanted to win, you needed to win and to do it with the character they showed, with the reaction, and four goals: young players scoring goals, Joselu and Ayoze scoring goals, players who needed to score – that has to be good for the confidence of the team.

Newcastle United XI (4-2-3-1): Woodman; Sterry, Clark (Lascelles 46′ [Hayden 57′]), Fernandez, Manquillo; Schar, Longstaff; Roberts (Perez 94′), Murphy, Ritchie (Atsu 109′); Joselu.

I actually might just hold TAA. We have fa cup coming up and it’s “up to” 4 weeks out.

Willing to lose the 0.1 SV I’ve gained. Too many times I’ve wasted transfers bringing the same guys in and out. TAA before and Richarlison spring to mind. Oh and Martial.

I feel can get by with just Alonso Digne Doherty and AWB.

    Anyone else considering holding ?

I think so and I can always change my mind if we get further news. I need to be more patient, back in the day I remember always holding an injured or non playing player on the bench and not giving two hoots !

He will probably be back in GW27-28
He will drop to at least 4.9 by then

I think that Robbo could return the minus 4 over Alonso this GW and then you have Liverpool defender, which seems to me like guaranteed points

I always transferred player the day before the gw started but this week i had to use my 2FT on sunday because rashford was increasing and I couldn’t afford him later on and i thought Kane’s injury was not that serious and might play.
But now kane is gone probably till march and TAA is also injured.

So what to do now? No FT and 0.00 itb

    Fabianski
    Robertson trippier TAA
    Salah hazard rich pogba
    Barnes Rashford kane

Bench: bednarek(vs eve) puncheon(vs city) wanbisaka (vs liverpool)

So both kane and TAA are at the price i bought them. If they drop in price, which they will soon, i am going to loose value from them. But this season, I haven’t taken a single point hit at all.
    So what should i do
    1. Leave both kane and TAA and bednarek and puncheon will come from bench to replace them.
    2. Transfer Kane with 4 point hit. With this option, I don’t see a clear alternative at all.
    3. Transfer TAA with 4 point hit to bring shaw.
    4. Take 8 point hit and replace them both but with who?

    Please suggest

Auba is probably the most nailed on player to replace Kane but arsenal’s mid is a mess and Kun might even not start since Jesus is having pretty good games lately.
So not sure what to do

Still think Hazard could do very well over the next three.
When I doubled up Sané and Sterling in December, it hurt my rank a lot. So not encline to recommand it now, but thats probably why.

If City beat the S out of HUD as I expect them too, we good be looking at 10+ points from both Sterling and Sané. But Hazard could also get similar points vs Arsenal and Bournemouth, two teams he loves playing against and which suits his style of play, then Huddersfield.

      It’s a tough one.

    1. VVD + Llorente
    2. Robertson + Calwert-Lewin

Agreed with above, not a fan of either of those forwards...Llorente the worst one though, just.

Let's talk about Pogba. Is he a flash in the pan or the real deal? Obviously he (when he's not bored/distracted by instagram/hating the manager/looking for a move) is great player, but from an FPL point of view is he that great? He's never had more than 8 goals in a season - even in his breakout year at Juventus, and his career xGpg and xApg are both lower than the likes of Theo Walcott!
That being said, his last few games have been impressive. He scored back to back braces for the first time in his career and has looked central to everything United have achieved. The question is, is this sustainable? It seems very possible that this is a purple patch brought on by a combination of excellent fixtures (Bournemouth away being arguably the pick of the season) together with a desire to go out and show what he can do for the new manager, and prove a point to Jose!

What are peoples thoughts? Is Pogba really a season keeper? Or is a Pog just for Christmas?

He's the real deal. If you watch the games you'll see he's the key man for United at the minute and has a great range of points through assists, long range goals, and goals in the box.

Yeah that's what I thought having watched the last 5 games. Digging into his record though, he actually isn't much of a goalscorer. I'm not saying he's a bad pick, just perhaps not captain material and not the indispensable asset people are making him out to be off the back of the last 5 fixtures.

He doesn't need to be captain material at 8.5m though. Agreed he's not going to score twice every week for the rest of the season but you could expect 2 goals/assists every 3 games.

I didn't get on him quick enough, thought I was clever going for Martial, and my rank has massively suffered as a result.

The real test will be when a team make it tough for united, we will then see what the team's real character is. When team start to get a bit physical, put 11 players behind the ball and when united go a goal down. That's when we will see if they are the real deal.

It was but they also played into United's hands a little. I want to see this united team go a goal behind, how will pogba and the rest react. It's all well and good pinging 50 yard passes around at 2-0 3-0 up but let's see how they react to going down or losing a game.

Can't argue that Pogba, Rashford and even Lukaku has looked good so far though

This week will be interesting. Can see Brighton parking the bus and United struggling to break them down without the space for their pacy front 3. Wouldn't be at all surprised if Lukaku starts that one tbh.

In some ways parking the bus could be good for Pogba's FPL points because it will encourage him to take more shots from outside the area rather than looking for key passes.

His shots outside the area are pretty overrated. He scores 1 in 25 😆 More shots will just be a BPS sink.

United are a top 5 team in the league though so most of the games you would expect them to be playing with a lead and on the front foot. It shouldn't be very often that they need to be coming from behind or losing. I think with their new confidence they would react very well under adversity.

He is not the complete midfielder we payed for.He is good coming forward but when on the back foot he does not smell the danger sometimes and that is a big flaw in him.

Given his price and form, does it matter now? He has to be in everyone's team now anyway. Time to reasses may or may not come later.

There are always many season keepers like Richarlison last season or Alonso this year. Yet ditching them if needed is easy.

I think he can continue to perform this way.
The play goes through him always. Would have got him but stupidity cought me and took martial first. Swapped out him for pogba though.

He is on Pens too imo.
If you have watched the matches he looks very dangerous on counters as well as set plays and only header amongst current attacker's as lukaku is out of favor right now.
Plays @ 8/10 and could be good for the rest of the season.

I've got Martial, Rashford, and Pogba. All three are holds with United's fixtures. Agree Pogba looks very good in the air atm. Perhaps he is changing his style slightly under OGS? He definitely has the skillset to be a 15+ goals a season player, and arguably needs that in his game to go to the next level.

          It will this season.
After all if you look at it in other perspective he has a chance to silence his all critic's about being overrated/lazy.
He had the Mountains excuse earlier but no more.
It'll drive him I'm which is great for FPL perspective & definitely great for United going forward.

Trippier or Shaw? Money no issue, already have 2 Utd players but 0 spurs. Can't see Aurier being a problem seeing as he was arrested today

Trippier imo. Think Poch knows that without Kane/Son they won't be scoring 4 or 5 a game so he'll tighten up even more at the back. Plus if it's Llorente or Alli up top, they'll rely more heavily on crosses into the box for goals (whilst I don't think Llorente will start they'll use him more often from the bench imo).

It's human nature to always want more. People who took Doherty for 4.4 and Jimenez for 5.5 are still 0.1 from their ideal teams, because we always want more than we can have.
