The Community Round Up

Our community writers have been on fine form over the past week, presenting us with one of the busiest periods for articles on record.

Fantasy Premier League Bonus Point changes, squad rotation and goalkeeper selection were among the array of issues assessed. It was also a bumper week for Hot Topics, as we look back on discussions on Fantasy football’s unofficial achievements, the best premium players on offer and also welcome the youngest new recruit to the Fantasy Football Scout family.

The Community Articles

The changes to Fantasy Premier League’s Bonus Point System (BPS) was the subject of The 3rd Turd’s impressive research this week. Incredibly he has managed to configure next season’s changes to last season’s games to find out just who will be the winners and losers when it comes to bonus allocation.

Another stellar piece of analysis was unveiled by The Shoemaker, newly established as one of the community’s top new contributors. This time he examined the subject of squad rotation, assessing those teams with the most and least settled sides.

Rotation of a different nature was the focus of O’Shaughnessy latest article, in which he considered the best strategy for captains at the start of the season. This was an issue also picked up by Match of the Dan later in the week.  Le Saux Solid Crew’s look at Fantasy Football’s best all round attacking players in recent years proved further, essential reading in the search for the best armband selection.

As Fantasy managers prepare for Gameweek 1, price is always a primary consideration. This week saw a flurry of community articles offering sound advice for those in search of value players.

Kompany man’s focus was the best bang for your buck goalkeepers, while p00sbrown took an in depth look at the budget assets available in Watford’s squad. Chicken Mandy also has an eye on value in his pick of the best Tottenham prospects.

Triggerlips has also been looking at price and the time-honoured tactic of selecting a cheap fifth midfielder to afford the premium captain candidates elsewhere. But, he wonders, is 2015/16 the season to ditch the strategy and splash the cash on all five midfielders? The search for value continued in TM245‘s look at Value Over Replacement Player theory, which considered the best value midfielders as well forwards.

When the FPL player price list was announced there were more than a few surprises, with the majority of the community overestimating many price tags, according to the results from Dat Guy’s Price Prediction Challenge. Congratulations though to the crystal ball gazing skills of Henrzd, who had the best predictions.

The Sky Sports game also launched this week and our resident expert Disable was on hand to offer advice in our dedicated Rate My Team (RMT) article.

Finally, we wanted to hark back beyond the last week to The Sarjeant’s superb analysis of Southampton’s conveyor belt of young talent – a terrific insight into a club that’s been feeding our Fantasy Football squads in recent years and may well do for seasons to come.

Don’t forget, if you’ve got some analysis, scout reports or features brewing, be sure to visit our community section to submit your article.

The Hottest Topics

Later this month we have big plans regarding the steady stream of “Rate My Team” or “RMT” posts coming in. In the meantime, the community offered their advice on RMT etiquette to ensure that they attract replies.

A number of Hot Topics over the week took a look at some of the key names already featuring in many early Fantasy football draft teams. Branislav Ivanovic has emerged as the most popular premium priced defender, according to our poll. While for Wakey Manchester City’s David Silva is a name that should be top of the list of midfield candidates and Parm took a look at Alexis Sanchez’ Fantasy returns with and without some of Arsenal’s key men on the pitch.

More than half of FPL teams already own Eden Hazard but Rattan64 ponders whether Fantasy managers could be better off with 2.5 million in their pockets by drafting in his cheaper Chelsea team mate Cesc Fabregas instead?

A team with no shortage of choice in midfield is Man United, who this week added Morgan Schneiderlin and Bastien Schweinsteiger to a midfield that already boats Juan Mata and Memphis Depay. Doosra, however, is unimpressed and sparked a lively discussion this week after declaring the Red Devil’s revamped midfield a mess. In contrast, Wild Rover thinks the summer spending spree shows a side mounting a genuine title challenge.

Reacting quickly to the form of players such as United’s new recruits early on in the season is amongst the key advice on offer in Birdman77’s discussion on increasing team value in FPL. Reacting to transfer developments is also important, with Younes Kaboul’s move from Tottenham to Sunderland prompting Fantasy Noob to launch a debate on the most nailed-on Black Cat defenders.

Amongst the toughest players to predict a rise in form from are those from promoted teams. Yu Suk Young took this look back at some of the promoted players that proved a worthy investment. The Puntmaster also provides some useful information about those new to the Premier League with this update on his research into new recruits and promoted teams’ players. While Champs took a look at some of those promoted stars that failed to deliver.

Speaking of delivery, Granville popped by with the happy news that this week Mark welcomed a new addition to the family, with the birth of his daughter Edith. While Edith is the youngest birthday marked, this week also saw our resident Southampton expert Lucy celebrate her birthday, which she shares with former Saints star Gareth Bale.

Finally, one of this week’s most popular posts was Bsloebadger’s discussion on unofficial achievements in FPL, such as the Bench Buster, where your bench outscores your starting 11, and Captain Fantastic, where your armband selection delivers returns for 10 weeks in a row.

The Members Tables

With goalkeepers’ stock rising following a change to the bonus points Davejug1’s table went on the hunt for the most prolific penalty savers on offer.

If you’re a member and are yet to get to grips with the custom statistics tables, you can view this movie for an explanation of how they work. Also, remember to tag them so that people can find the tables with ease.

Just read Ranieri's comments about sticking with 3 centre backs. Huth and Morgan seem nailed but I'm wondering if 1 point merchant Liam Moore could replace old man Wasilewski. Friendly lineups closer to the time should give a better indication but he could give us a starting 4m option.

I assume with Morgan on gold cup duty, he'll miss the pre-season friendlies, and thus leave us none-the-wiser as to his first team status. 🙁

Generally agree, though I think it also depends on the price bracket the player is in. If there's an obvious alternative around the same price you can switch to if things go wrong then what harm in a informed risk?

What are people's plans for the first wildcard? I see 3 main options really:

+ GW4, after the transfer window closes, we have had a few weeks to guage form and there's an international break to take advantage of the price change mechanism

+ Wait until an unexpected injury pile-up occurs. (I used this to great effect with my standard wildcard in gw16 last year)

+ Wait for a flip in fixture difficulty, maybe gw8?

    1. Captain Peacock
      • 10 Years
      8 years, 10 months ago

I'm only looking at weeks 9 and 12, which are fixture difficulty switch weeks for a few teams.

Remember that WCs didn't count towards price changes last year, so week 4 might not be so lucrative as you'd think.

        • 10 Years
        8 years, 10 months ago

This is a good point about the price changes, though who knows, maybe FPL Towers will flip flop on the pricing mechanism?

Will your gw1 team be geared towards the period up to gw9 or gw12 specifically?

        1. Captain Peacock

Still deciding at this point. Currently built for weeks 1-8, especially in defence, but I've recently noticed City have a golden run between weeks 4-12. I'm wondering whether that will be best captured by two or three players. If three , I might rebuild my team.

            • 10 Years
            8 years, 10 months ago

City in flight really has to be 3 players.

            Zaba/Kola + Silva/Sterling + Aguero

It's a lot of money IMO, and limits your attacking options elsewhere if you're someone who likes 'coverage'

Why do people seem so disgusted by Bournemouth defenders in RMT? A good rotation gives a potentially beneficial run. Pairing with West Ham for the first 8 weeks means you're starting a Bournemouth defender only in home games against Villa, Sunderland, Leicester and Watford. That's good enough for me at the price.

I see many teams with one, but the replies (mostly from regulars, or such is my impression) tend to write of Bournemouth as well as the other promoted teams.

When you consider how awful the north east clubs look at defending right now, Bournemouth might not be one of the worst defences out there.

Sunderland are very solid defensively and Big Dick is renowned for that.

I expect Bournemouth to struggle mightily in defence and I also expect them and Watford to go down. Their manager is idealistic and thinks he can play "Guardiola-Barcelona" style in the PL. He'll learn better but not until they get hammered a few times.

The upshot is I wouldn't touch a Bournemouth defender with a bargepole. And Watford don't interest me either.

Norwich defenders, on the other hand, I am very happy to have in my squad. The manager is pragmatic, sets his team out in a solid way and they can play 2 DMs when they want to now they have signed the very good Mulumbu. Additionally it's a squad full of PL experience. I think they will be the most solid of the three by quite a distance.

😆 has he actually been quoted on "Guardiola-Barcelona"? Even Guardiola has talked about it only working so well because Messi was so good.

Yes he has spoken about that kind of thing. He also said he would “observe training sessions in either Italy or Spain this summer in order to improve as a coach”. Which tells you how off the page he is. He's a Guardiola devotee and believes Bournemouth can play that way in the PL.

It will all end in tears.

You have to look not just at the amount of clean sheets (Bournemouth had the best record of the promoted clubs) but why they got them. In Bournemouth's case it was because they had great possession of the ball and were the best attacking unit in the division. Many teams were frightened of them and played damage limitation.

Well, they won't be able to do that in the PL. The boot will be on the other foot entirely except Bournemouth won't be coached to play damage limitation. That's my read of it anyway.

                • 10 Years
                8 years, 10 months ago

Observing in Italy would be a good thing really though as they play a much more strategic game that relies on formational discipline and a safety first approach. If he is looking to expand his horizons, Italy can only be a good thing.

If he's just observing Barca/Madrid/Juve it could all end in tears because although they may the best, it isn't necessarily because of superior coaching but the talent and money they have to work with.

Dick caught fire in a bottle last year and provided a new manager bounce. I don't see that continuing, especially when multiple projected first team players are getting torched by third rate American teams (yes, it's only preseason but still concerning).

3 weeks to go yet. You may be right of course. But I will take the known quantity, players with PL experience and a proven manager over the unknown quantity, inexperienced players (at PL level) and a young, somewhat idealistic manager myself.

It's been proven defensive record goes out the window when you get to the Prem, so we don't know how they'll do, good or bad. The fixtures above suggest they have a fighting chance.

No, what has been proven is that promoted teams are less capable of clean sheets in the PL. Which actually you don't need statistical proof of because it's self-evident.

I thought you were talking about statistics.

Which team got more clean sheets in the PL than they had managed in the Championship?

It was Palace I was thinking of, but in fact they only matched their previous total (in fewer games I might add). It's not really relevant I suppose since Howe is not Pulis.

Regardless, certain teams can catch fire at different times and fixtures matter a lot when assessing potential clean sheets. Bournemouth have a good enough run at the start when rotated, to make me think they're worth an eight week punt.

Well, that crosses into strategy really.

If it's for 8 weeks I'd rather have Southampton/Norwich for the same price as West Ham/Bournemouth. Or Stoke/Sunderland for 0.5 less.

    Current team:

    Ruddy (Hennessey)
    Azpi, Huth, Francis (Prodl, Targett)
    Hazard, Cesc, Mata, Ritchie (Fletcher)
    Aguero, Giroud, Sakho

Gk: Both cheap, both might start.

Def: Azpi is the ever-present anchor, Francis/Prodl rotate well, Huth looks the best Leicester defender and has good fixtures, Targett is a temporary pick and could be carried even if he doesn't play.

Midfield: Hazard and Cesc are nailed on and top quality FPL picks, Mata and Ritchie are slightly riskier but the potential reward is worth it, Fletcher is a low-ownership bench option who should get the extra clean sheet point fairly regularly.

Strikers: Kun is obvious, I back Giroud to fight off the Walcott challenge, Sakho is nailed on with excellent fixtures.

    Thoughts? Thanks in advance!

I'm favouring Morgan over Huth. Id also be tempted to swap out Fab for an Arsenal mid... Ramsay/Ozil because I can see Wenger rotating Walcott and Giroud. If that happens GW1 and Kun doesn't play, then ur struggling a bit.
