Scout Notes – Kane Benched As Spurs Sink Swans

Storm Eleanor lashes last night’s matches, but it is the lack of a Harry Kane that puts the wind up most Fantasy Premier League managers.

Double Gameweek 22 was, to many managers, all about getting Harry Kane in their line-ups, captaining him – or triple captaining him – to a points-drenched start to the New Year.

Even the news that he had been ill over Christmas didn’t matter.

More than 467,000+ made him the second most purchased player of the Gameweek, 1,320,000+ (24.2%) the most captained and 121,000+ the triple captain of choice.

And all we got for the effort was a 22-minute, one-point cameo in Spurs’ 2-0 win at storm-lashed Swansea City.

It could have been (slightly) better when the striker sent over a superb ball for Dele Alli’s decisive goal at the Liberty Stadium, only for his England team-mate to take the chance at the second time of asking, thus blowing Kane’s assist out of the water.

All is not lost, of course.

With Alli, Christian Eriksen and Son Heung-min all playing the full 90 minutes last night, the one thing we can say with near-certainty is that Kane will start tomorrow’s match against West Ham.

A reckoning of the whole Double Gameweek 22 can only be made after that, although it’s safe to say it’s not started that well for those who betted big on Kane – 77.1% of those using the Triple Captain chip played it on the striker.

Post-match, his manager had this to say:

“We saw it was difficult for him to run, but I think it was a good training session for him to prepare for the next game. We hope he will be well in the next 24 hours and he can be ready to play against West Ham.”

The 498,000+ who made Son the biggest transfer-in had to make do with only three points, while the 366,000 who went for Eriksen (the fourth most bought) were rewarded with an assist – his sixth return over the last seven Gameweeks.

Alli, meanwhile, was only the fifth most popular player ahead of Gameweek 22, but emerged as the most productive of the Spurs’ attackers thanks to his goal.

He now has two goals and four assists from his last three starts and was played behind Fernando Llorente, who opened the scoring, last night as Eriksen dropped deeper to accommodate Erik Lamela’s inclusion on the right of an attacking midfield three.

Alli thrived in that more advanced role, firing in five shots, three of which came inside the area, and will hope for more of the same against the Hammers.

But it seems highly unlikely all four midfielders will play again tomorrow, with Lamela perhaps the most likely to drop out as coach Mauricio Pochettino has assiduously managed the Argentine’s minutes – he was given 76 against Swansea – since he returned from a long-term hip injury.

Son’s start could also be under threat if Pochettino considers deploying a 3-4-2-1 system, drafting two of Victor Wanyama, Moussa Sissoko or Harry Winks into midfield to allow Eric Dier to drop back into a three-man defence. Having started Tottenham’s last nine at Wembley, though, the South Korean’s 12% ownership will be optimistic of him retaining a spot on Pochettino’s teamsheet tomorrow.

Defence back on track

Spurs have now kept three of their eight clean sheets for the season over the last five Gameweeks.

And even the vexed question of wing-back rotation might be in for a solution, albeit a temporary one, on the left flank.

One of the early-season bandwagons, Ben Davies, started last night and will almost certainly do so again tomorrow as his rotation partner, Danny Rose, is struggling with a knee injury.

Speaking post-match, Pochettino said Rose’s issue would be assessed prior to the West Ham match, before adding:

“I think I cannot say anything, but my feeling, my perception is it would be difficult to play in 48 hours.”

Kieran Trippier excelled on the other flank, picking up maximum bonus from three net tackles and three key passes to go with his clean sheet, although Serge Aurier will most likely step back in against the Hammers as Pochettino continues to swap the pair around.

Centre-back Davinson Sanchez made his third straight start after returning from a three-match ban for his Gameweek 15 dismissal at Watford.

But the Colombian’s minimal (0.5%) ownership were denied shutout points when he was subbed off after 58 minutes.

That seemed like Fantasy cruelty, but Pochettino had little option as the defender was decidedly lucky not to have been sent off for a second bookable offence by then.

The result was zero points for Sanchez’s owners. In truth, it could have been even worse than that.

Carroll back with a bang

West Ham players generally had to play second fiddle to their Spurs counterparts when it came to buying up double Gameweek assets.

The one exception was the in-form midfielder Marko Arnautovic, 368,000+ managers making him the third most bought player ahead of a home match with West Brom and the trip to Wembley.

The Austrian international duly obliged with an assist in last night’s 2-1 win over the Baggies – his fourth straight return and fifth in six Gameweeks.

But the star of the show was Andy Carroll.

It seems almost unnecessary to mention that his season, to date, has been an injury-hit one.

Instead, let’s just say that his latest mini-run in the side has been his best of 2017/18.

He followed up an assist in a Gameweek 19 substitute appearance with two goals last night – that’s his entire season’s output right there.

The striker’s notorious frailty makes a second match in 48 hours a risky proposition for manager David Moyes, but he might be tempted to ride the Carroll rollercoaster while it’s still fully operational.

Moyes has rather less options when it comes to his defence.

Aaron Cresswell set up Carroll’s equaliser with a superb cross – his second consecutive assist – to cheer the 101,000+ managers who brought him in for the double Gameweek.

But their man then went off with a back injury after 75 minutes and is now a doubt for the Spurs match.

His obvious replacement in a back three, James Collins, missed the West Brom match through injury.

Should he fail to shake that off quickly, the Hammers will be down to the bare bones in a defence that has not kept a clean sheet in three matches now.

There was at least one stroke of luck for Moyes from his defenders as Arthur Masuaku, who was brought in by 29,000 for Gameweek 22, could well have seen red against West Brom.

The wing-back had already been booked when he went down all too easily under Baggies goalscorer James McClean’s challenge in the box.

Replaced after 72 minutes, the Frenchman’s 2.1% ownership will be hoping to see him back in action tomorrow night, although the prospects of defensive returns against Spurs’ in-form attack look patchy.

As for West Brom, as if going winless for 21 matches in all competitions wasn’t bad enough, they also lost midfielder Matt Phillips to a hamstring problem in the warm-up.

However, the fit-again Salomon Rondon returned to the XI last night and provided the assist for McClean’s opener – the Venezuelan has now bagged a goal and assist in his last three starts and entertains Brighton next time out.

I think the issue is that it was explained with a new rule, that isn't in the official rules. Hence a LOT of people are fairly miffed that new rules are being introduced into the game!

            What new rule?

Didn't it use the intended target rule? Same as Ibra last year.

nope. They couldn't determine intended target, so gave it based on the cross being hit 'to front post space' and since Aguero was the first player stood in that space, they then awarded it as an assist.

So they can give assists even if it wasn't clearly hit at an intended target

                They've used this rule:

If an opposing player touches the ball after the final pass before a goal is scored, significantly altering the intended destination of the ball, then no assist is awarded.

They're saying it wasn't significantly altered from the touch and Aguero was in the space where the ball was going.

Whether you agree with that or not is up to you / Reddit.

I can't say I'm hugely bothered either way.

Yeah, I think it should only be given if the ball would have gone to that player had the defender/keeper not touched it (kindof like how deflections/own goals are decided).

Aguero clearly wasn't getting it without Gomes, so no assist imo. Different story if it had gone to one of the players at the back-post.

No need for it to be more complicated than that.

    Otamendi jones klavan (mee, mbemba)

    Salah mahrez lingard sterling (king)

    Aguerro kane quaner

I presume Klavan not nailed with VVD coming in. Fringe players need to be upgraded; Elliot injured, Mbemba doesn't play, King and Quaner won't get very many points. Solid core team (excl. Klavan) but not enough depth for me

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

Top differentials for the new year.

Looking at FPL’s ownership statistics it struck me that there are plenty of excellent low owned players about (in less than10% of teams).

Here’s a few that caught my eye. Feel free to comment on these and suggest any others.

Which low owned high flyers are already in your side or are on your watchlist?

    Mahrez (LEI)

    Price: 8.6
    Points: 126
    Ownership: 9.8%
Next Four: che WAT eve SWA

Great form, with returns in eight of his last nine starts, plus excellent fixtures after Leicester’s trip to Stamford Bridge. The only caveat is will he still be a Foxes player during the January transfer window?

    Arnautovic (WHU)

    Price: 7.0
    Points: 59
    Ownership: 8.9%
Gameweek 23 onwards next four: hud, BOU, CPL, bri

The Austrian is in many community teams already for the current double Gameweek but overall he is only in a small number of teams. A perfect mid price option to help climb up the rankings given his role in the team, form and stellar fixture run.

    Mustafi (ARS)

    Price: 5.4
    Points: 63
    Ownership: 3.1%
Gameweek 23 onwards next four: bou, CPL, swa, EVE

After Chelsea visit he has a great run of games into early February. When fit he tends to start in the Arsenal backline. Across his ten 90 minute run outs he has helped the Gunners earn seven clean sheets. Two goals this term give him added goal threat. A very kind price for a premium performing defender.

Yep Mustafi is a catch all for any sure starting cut price gunners defender. Monreal has an injury currently it seems but is nailed when fit.

Mane (6.8%) looks like a good differential. He'll get more minutes once Coutinho has gone.

Albrighton (2.2%) has quietly been getting points. An alternative if your ML rival already has Mahrez and would free up money elsewhere.

        Lanzini (2.1%) Great fixtures.

Callum Wilson (2.0%) With Defoe and King out, a good short-term option until they come back.

One of my favourites. Suddenly there's lots of value in midfield again - just as Aguero looks to be rotation free. Handy.

I remember around this time a couple of years ago you shot up the rankings by targeting these sort of players - low owned, high points potential, good value. Sigurdsson as I recall was among those then.

I still can't figure out how on earth ARS have kept that many clean sheets..Watching their games, they are just lucky..i got lucky with Monreal..Arsenal is not a clean sheets team..this is just my opinion..

If a player or team is consistently 'lucky' we have to admit that there is skill involved.

If Stoke can finally bring themselves to bin Mark Hughes, then Choupo-Moting (3.7% ownership) could be an interesting differential as a midfield makeweight to fund Aguero.

If he scores a hattrick against hammers ? thats the point of a dgw, 2 games

        1. FotnikPL
          • 6 Years
          6 years, 5 months ago

I get it but in this logic he will give same amount of points like during single GW.
I know that many times during season SGW player is able to outscore DGW player - Lukaku Vs BOU last season or Aguero Vs WAT. But all you have to do play it wise because TC is once per season.
I am not saying Kane will blank again.
The risk was too high that's why many of us didn't TC him. But writing about deleting accounts because we made this decision is really harsh.
Would this user TC him again if he knew that Kane won't start vs SWA?

And by the way I am not a kind of person who won't show here around if my prediction was big fail.
And unfortunately that happened recently :/
I like to discuss about FPL but on decent level. I am not going to write to community that they should give up FPL only because they made one kind of decision. I am not Mr KnowEverything who doesn't make mistakes but I respect all players who often have different view than me. It is just a game, you should have fun and that's it.

Can't decide whether Aguero is essential now that Jesus has knack.

      What do y'all think ?

FWIW He'd replace Firmino (who's been a lovely litte buy of late) as I can't face the carnage of swicthing back to 3 up front. Liverpool's fixtures are pretty tasty, though so are City's of course.

Still would prefer a cheaper City mid double up than Aguero.

City’s fixtures not that great next few so I’m staying clear of Kun for now.

I can afford and am tempted by Kun, but I'm sticking with Kane and Morata as my two big hitters for now. Going with no Chelsea doesn't feel right with their upcoming fixtures (LEI,bha,BOU,wat,WBA), going no pool doesn't right for me either given their form.

        Same here, I'm not convinced.

Owned him a few times this season and he has hardly been prolific.

Would require a hit to fit him back into my team after moving to a five man midfield. This week is FA Cup, next week is Liverpool away then Jesus will be 2-3 weeks from returning.

Not ruling him out but certainly not essential when I have Sterling and KDB would be cheaper and easier to fit in.

Played FH and currently i'm on same pts as my brother with four extra players and his (-8) for hits to the good...

That might turn out to be ok and worth as much as when he plays his FH in a BGW....maybe more...

                CONTROVERSIAL ASSIST SOLUTION

It really is a big annoyance to a lot of FPL players. Mainly because it is such a big difference in say if you've captained Kane last night or kdb... ie a big swing in points, and the resulting bonuses.

I had a good think about it last night and think came up with what I think is a decent solution. There are also other issues with assists that could be improved upon in making an adjustment. Enjoyed reading Mark's explanations last night but wow the rules are so ridiculously complicated. It should be simplified in my opinion and reduce the swing of points to keep managers happier.... so here's my suggestion

                DA (Direct assist) 3 points
                IDA (Indirect assist) 2 points

DA is for a pure assist. No touches from anyone else (other than a keeper saving a goal bound shot)

IDA is for all others. Key pass like Kanes last night (not his fault alli needed two attempts). KDBs the same, cross deflected to scorer.

                Other examples.

Fabregas long pass to costa last year, rattles in Mcauleys legs twice before costa runs and scores. IDA not DA

Rooney pen miss assist. Would then become an IDA and 2 points (yes it's an on target shot and could be argued as a DA but missing a penalty should be unique and not rewarded). Minus 2 points for a missed pen (why do you gain points from missing a penalty?!!) means 0 points overall which is fairer than gaining 1.

Costa goal, Alonso thrown in assist. This one baffled the hell out of me at the time, just common sense said it wasn't an assist on the eye...But with the above rule change it becomes simple. Opponent heads it, IDA

McCauley gate. Bit different this one, remains the same as it's purely an argument over whether he touched it or not. So remains Evans assist, McCauley goal. (Brunt owner, still hurts!)

Tadic/ Davis . Very similar to KDB above but Davis doesn't get the assist. IDA

                Additions/alterations.

Could then use IDA for less decisive other assists.

Player goes down softly 30 yards out, free kick taker scores a worldy. IDA would be more suitable given he's contributed not a lot to the goal (may just be my opinion on that one, I understand he won the free kick)

Wins a penalty from handball. IDA

Flick on at a corner. DA, corner taker IDA.

Anyway, just a suggestion for Mark and FPL Towers. Before you decide you don't like it (or do!) think of any controversial assist.... I haven't been able to think of one the above suggestion doesn't solve. Feel free to suggest other assist that would need clarifying within the system!

Rooney's penalty post assist was class. Deserves 5pts let alone 3. To be able to pull that off is amazing

It would resolve some/much need to be subjective. Nothing will be perfect as so many things can happen on a pitch but this would reduce the amount of controversies and also the impact of them given it becomes 1 point?

Just Keep it simple - FPL should bend over backwards to ensure an assist is given for every goal, unless there really is no justification whatsoever. Doesn't matter if it ricochets off a kardashian ass...just give the fricking assist already!!!

The problem is always subjectiveness, there's been two assists I can recall this season that nobody gave a crap about because they were not highly owned players but definitely shouldn't have stood. Naughton earlier in the season and Crouch or mame Diouf (can't remember which scored or assisted but can remember it shouldn't have stood)

So if you lose your ml by a few points to a rival who benefited from those points, you were cheated

Surely a goalkeeper save, should result in an IDA in that case?

Makes no sense to include one opposition intervention as Direct, but all others as Indirect.

Perhaps correct, for me personally I think a great save from a great shot and goal scored is still a solid assist, but again with it being 1 point diff could go in either category and no one would mind particularly I don't think

Heres the thing for me that prompted the long think.

It's taking away that gutting feeling when your player (eg Kane last night) does something great that could or should be an assist and you get nothing and then watch KDBs on MOD knowing it could/should have not been one. With the above, you would immediately know as it happens that both will get some reward and not the faced with the double whammy punch in the face/kick in the nuts.

Just complicates things because you dont like them.

Assisys are deliberate actions tgat asdist another player in scoring a goal. Hence why they are called assists.

If a player lays in a scorer then he gets an assist. If he plays a pass tgat deflected off an opposition leg to a scorer then he doesnt get an assist. Very simple.

Great work on this but my own opinion is that FPL towers have enough on their plate coming up with a bonus system that bears any resemblance to the value of a contribution by a player to a team. By and large assists are about right and sometimes you will get the rub of the green (or not). The bonuses are just a total lottery and I personally think some subjectiveness on it would be better, maybe using various player ratings from papers, online media etc...

Interesting. I always disliked the sun dream team "MOM" because it was down to one man to decide. Prefer fpl's, agree it needs some work, problem is most people (using twitter responses mainly) feel that if their player assist and scores and doesn't bonus it's a travesty. Honestly I'm not sure what I would do with it! Sometimes you watch a player, I remember specifically glen johnson had the worst half of football in history for Liverpool , went on to fpl at half time. Lead the bonus by 6!

Yeah it's not easy, but to me it is way too much stats driven. Goals and assists are not everything, particularly if a defender plays out of his skin in a 1-0 win. As I say I'd take some sort of collective average from various sources scoring the players and go with that.

the ones that I don't rate are, defender gives ball to player 2 yds pass in own half, player then does a maradona run and scores. Defender gets assist and likely baps for a pass that in no way was intended to set up scoring chance

Agree almost entirely and have championed this for years. Although I think you're at risk of over complicating it. I would make it very simple and certainly don't think you can have an IDA AND a DA in the same goal.

3 points for a DA (as you outline above - very simply, the last untouched pass to a player who scores OR winning a penalty)

                        2 points for an IDA

My list of what an IDA is would be thus:

Saved or blocked shots (including missed penalty)
                        Deflected crosses
Fouls resulting in direct free kicks
Hitting the post and it rebounding for someone to score
Last pass to a striker who takes two chances to score or is "tackled" en route (i.e. Alli last night, Costa last season)
and finally... Dummies (such a shame that we get no reward for those rare moments of poetic genius)

I don't think that would be hard to implement I really do and would clear up this argument of whether or not it's an assist or not if opposition player touches it slightly as well as rewarding a few other areas

Ashley Young got an assist for Lingards equaliser v Burnley.
He scuffed the ball towards goal - wouldn't even have reached - it was half cleared and Lingard smashed it in.
How the hell was that an assist?
The rules - or application of them - are a joke.

agreed, this would clearly be an IDA - there always has to be a reward for the last attacking player to touch the ball before the goal scorer in my opinion - what makes it frustrating is the grey area - this would eliminate this by rewarding that always, but giving you a bit extra for a genuine "pure" assist

Yup and it's then only one point between the two so no one gonna get highly aggrieved over that if one is subjective. It just removes the grey as you say

Maybe make the difference 2 points.
Even if it means adjusting the goal values, 5,6,7 like Sky.
Either way possibly a 2 pt difference seems fairer, but at least you get something as some awards amaze me.

it is clearly an attempt on target although it is clearly a bad one, but nonetheless an attempt. My rival had Young so as much as i wanted that to not be registered as an assist it is in terms of fpl rules. Fpl can´t judge their points calculation on basis of how good or bad a player is....

That's fair but changing the rule to IDA DA means no need for fpl to judge the players quality. That's the point.

To be fair the quality of the player has nothing to do with it. It was more that in reality (not FPL I agree) Young did not assist the goal.

well that was my point, but maybe should have stated it more clearly. Youngs effort is an assist fpl wise, no doubt.

Young's effort was a shot on goal blocked. If we start disallowing shots based on the speed, angle, likelihood of the shot actually being a goal, then it just adds even more variables and objective opinion.

                            Shot blocked. Rebound scored. Assist.

That's surely far easier than attempting to assess the quality of the shot?

Do you see any merit in the suggestion and subsequent discussion Mark? Clearly some angst with current system and I really think it's easily fixed, even if not from this thread. Big diff between 0 and 3 and little diff between a lot of assists. I know it's the rules, but from a football perspective no one can really deny Kane was more entitled to an assist than many this season or seasons before?

                                agree on both these points

you can't have a system that takes into account the supposed "quality" of the cross/shot - your later points about the intended person the cross was going to are good though

as for Kane last night - I think it's pretty telling that the commentators both said "what an assist from Harry Kane" - yet in the game, none is given - this is certainly a glitch in the system

I dunno. Didn't Young get 11 points last week in a match he should have been sent off during before either assist or clean sheet was awarded?

It does suck that, can't disagree. Would just be carnage then taking away the points/minus for red cards each week. I think to some level on all these things, if no change can be made without multiple ripples elsewhere then maybe we just accept it. Nothing more annoying tho than a rivals man scoring after ref doesn't see an obvious stamp/elbow!

Agree with this, and Hindu Monkeys reply. There is certainly scope for FPL to improve this system. I know football is a subjective game, but the incident that highlighted the inconsistency for me was this one:

Trent Alex Arnold clearly deflected cross away from intended target, finds Mane, who swivels and scores, TAA assist given. Yet in Leicester game Gray crosses, clearly deflects away from intended target, Albrighton scores. No assist to gray. Where is the consistency there? Those 2 scenarios were literally identical and occurred within half an hour of one another!

Great example RM. agree they could improve consistency even without the above suggestions. But changing it would at least mean it's likely only a one point swing, doesn't make up for the fact they should have been the same anyway but....

yep Alex, not given. Its bizarre, other than TAA crossing from a deeper position than Gray, the 2 situations are identical. Both TAA and Gray were aiming to put their cross in the corridoor of uncertainty/near post areas. Both were deflected away from this intended area to an area further from goal, in which Mane and Albrighton were lurking, respectively.

Looking at the examples you give.

TAA - like KDB last night - crosses without any discernible player as a target. However, his cross appears destined for the near post with Mane the first player in line should it reach that destination. The deflection still took the ball to Mane who scored. Therefore the assist stands. The intended destination was not significantly changed by the touch since Mane could be seen as a possible target.

Gray - his cross appears to be clearly directed at the run of Silva. The two touches then divert his cross to run to the far post where Albrighton converts. Because there is a clear player target for the cross (Silva, as deemed by Opta), then no assist was given in this case.

Each and every decision reviewed is done so very carefully, with reference to the rules and past examples. It's reviewed then re-reviewed before the final decision is past by ISM.

Nothing is perfect, but as you see from the above, there is an attempt to have consistency when making the decisions but when it comes down to judging intent, it is obviously difficult at times.

I'm sure there is effort and logic applied Mark but while essence of the post is that it's an easy switch, with little downside that means you don't need 3 paragraphs to explain the difference between an assist that looks almost identical, even if it isn't. Surely it's just common sense to take out some detail and subjectivity?!

I totally agree that a system that reduces it would be fantastic. Just to explain, I'm not dismissing the proposed solution at all - I think it has some legs.

I'm just trying to answer the queries raised and try to communicate the thinking behind the decisions highlighted.

I have concerns that folk just jump to the conclusion that assists are thrown around and awarded without regard for clear rules and consistency. That is very much not the case and each and every assist awarded can be explained according to those rules. Sometimes though, it is a judgement call.

Ok fair enough. I don't think that assists aren't considered to the fullest degree, I think it has to be because of the system/rules and it's great that so much effort is put into it. I just think if those involved take a step outside the box and look back in they will see there's an easier way that involves less work, less explanation, less manager disapproval and therefore a benefit for everyone involved.

I will now stand down, think about Billy and then maybe, just maybe do some work.

It's a great discussion and tbh, I'm grateful to be given any opportunity to explain the logic behind some of the decisions made.

The rules definitely warrant further review to try to cut down on the complication and judgement calls.

appreciate the logical explanations, it does help, particularly to know it's not just whim but well thought out... but it doesn't change the fact that it could be made so much easier, cleaner and less work with a simple change. I say simple, I'm fully aware that many different situations will need to be thought of before a change can be made, as dead star mentions further down.... but I just can't think of many at all that don't easily fit into to DA or IDA, or at least that 1 point diff wouldn't wouldn't Make any situation easier to swallow.

Hi Mark, thank you for your reply. Having looked at the goals again, I can see what you mean. I had to slow the Liverpool one to Frame by Frame but I guess so do the reviewers! Certainly a tight call that wasn't immediately obvious in real time though, and still retains subjectivity.

I do like Gunner's suggestion though as it lessens the large potential differential outcome of these (often subjective) marginal calls, and makes the game more appealing to the casual fan, which is surely in everyone's interest?

Just regarding Adrian Silva, it was nice to see Leicester handing him the number 14 shirt to honor the number of seconds he missed the transfer window by! It would be good to see more clubs take this type of approach, it was a crying shame Gabriel Heintze wasn't given the number 57 shirt, nor Harry Winks the number 40.

To be honest I think it could just be simplified even more. Just award an assist for every goal scored - meaning the last player to play the ball before the goal scorer. I know some will be fortunate but that's just football. I hate not getting assists for ones where the forward hits the post first then puts in the rebound. If an assist was awarded for every goal at least there would be none like last night not being awarded.

That's pretty much what the above is, it's just seperating a pure assist from a less clean (luckier/non intentional) one. and the one point duff at least gives a pure assist a little added extra. Like sane vs kdb last night. Similar positions, one executes, the other fails. Currently that somehow means same points whilst Kane executes perfectly for nothing .

I'm against two types of assist. I think that over complicates it. FPL just need to award "all" assists. Easy.

Can't see how it's more complicated! Yes there are now two but the subjectiveness is now over and the difference between them highly reduced, cannot see any complexity other than it's gone from 1 to 2 versions. But, each to their own!!

So if a player gives another the ball in his own half and then that player runs at goal, goes past 3 opposition players before slotting the ball past the goalie the assister gets 3 points? Where as if an assister goes past 3 opposition players and crosses but the ball takes a slight nick off a opposition defender before the goalscorer puts the ball away that's only 2 points? I don't like that.

Fair point dead star. I'm not claiming to be the one who decides what is a DA and what isn't a DA. But right now the system says a 2 inch tap free kick, a length of the pitch run, a missed pen and a significantly deflected cross are all assists and mikis and Kane's terrific through balls aren't. Maybe it's just the double shot needs changing, but I'd also say at present there are numerous dubious variances between 0 and 3 and you've just mentioned one that would still be tough, but still only a points difference. I for one would rather that than a 14 point captaincy swing between Kane and kdb (yes I had Kane but it's just a close in time example)

I'm 100% with you on changing the current system. I'm just being realistic in that I don't expect FPL to ever over complicate the game, which I think two types of assist would (they like to keep it easy for the casuals). I honestly think just reward all assists. Think about it - it will be the reverse kind of moaning that we have now. The ones people will then moan about are the jammy ones where a player gets an assist for doing very little and the goalscorer does all the work. I don't think there'll be many of them.

You know what, i probably agree. It comes down to this

                                      - a small addition of a Key Contribution/IDA two pointer (yes agree could be seen as a complication)

                                      Or

                                      - award all assists to last attacking touch (if no more than 1 defensive touch perhaps)

The downside of the second one is will then be getting assists for almost no contribution and equals a mazy dribble and perfect cross, it's why I liked 2 points and 3. Everyone gets something, pure assist rewarded a little more.

Anyway, all the best decisions come from intelligent people who listen to all this opinion and then make the best decision they can considering all factors. Can't do any more so cheers and over and out!

If an opposition player touches it then its not an assist. Very simple.

Nice effort, but this would just complicate matters imo. And yes it is a difference between the nature of assists given in fpl but the rules are actually solving the problematics quite well. Some incidents will always be controversial, but like everything else luck and unluck tends to equal each other as time goes by.

And to include assist given after you´ve been fouled as an ida is discriminating a lot of players like Zaha, Mané, Salah, and Hazard. And yes that leaves you with some "lucky" assist ie a handball or softies where the striker gets a little touch and goes down. Penalties is a debate also, but to me that will stll not solve it because for example Rooneys penalty vs Fabianski is a worldie save from Fabianski, that is a well placed shot wich Rooney is unlucky that Fab is in goal, few goalies are better than Fab on pen savings. That leaves one to distinguish between bad or good pens which ultimately leads d nowhere imo.

You're points are valid, but that doesn't mean the suggestion complicates things. If it's deemed that free kicks should be DA not IDA have no issue, just a suggestion. Don't agree on Rooney. You get 4 points for a goal, free shot from 12 yards... cantbeat rhe keeper don't deserve points IMO. But if that's also deemed unfair then just make it a DA. The suggestion above reduces complication and reduces opinion based awards, and whilst doing that reduces the points difference between any that remains. Feel free to offer an assist example to use that would make the above more complicated.

                          Cheers for thy reply!

I like your propositions but i think they actually implies a certain degree of judgement, in that they diverse into different types of assist, to me (yes that is an opinion) Young doesn´t deserve an assist but he got it, Mcauley didn´t deserve an assist but he got it. Sanchez got an assist when he had the tiniest flick there was of an Iwobi shot, but point is, wether they deserved it or not is was an assist.

My example is Zaha, he is tormeneting defence with his trickery and is often brought down both inside or outside the pen area, to me that is an assist as much as Morata´backheel pass to hazard vs west brom.

But i do see that you have a point in that it is clearly a difference between a deliberate pass and when the ball bounces of somebody and a team mate pokes the ball in. Problem begins when you deem handballs, because in most cases they are forced errors, the player that earns the free kick or penalty have with their actions forced a player to use his hand etc. Sometimes it´s just sillyness, like Pogba vs Henderson but point is that will be a judgement call.

Could there be a differentiation in the bps system, for example 9, 6 and 3 depending on what kind of assist they´re deemed to be?

Baps are very hard to figure. You watch a game for 90 mins and half the time the top player either a) has had nothing to do
                              b) has in your opinion been poor.

That's what we have. The trouble is, when a cross/pass takes a touch, that's when intended destination or target have to be assessed. At that point, there is no choice but to make a judgement call.

When there is a clear player target for a pass, it's far easier to assess and often rule out the assist.

When there is no clear player target, then Opta/ISM have to judge the intended target area of the pass and then judge whether the goal is eventually scored by a player who could have occupied that target area.

In the case of Aguero last night, he was in what was deemed the target destination of the cross and therefore the assist stood.

It is fairly complicated but if you take time to review each decision made, you can see how the rules are applied.

Freeze frame KDB's cross when it leaves his foot and then assess the likely intended target destination for his cross. Then look at players in that area. Then look at who scores the goal after the touch from the opposing player. Is the scorer a player who was identified as one of those in the deemed target destination for the cross. If yes, award the assist.

This is the kind of process that takes place when reviewing.

Mark agree on all of that but you even say yourself it's complicated. Create DA and NDA and that ALL goes away. Defensive touch and it's an NDA but still get points.

who is the intented target when a player is taking a corner? every player in the box?

that ball clearly wasn't going to Aguero before Gomes saved it, so it's not an assist, if one of the far-post players scored you would have a point. I think they just plainly got this one wrong.

Yes. When a corner is taken, if it gets a touch off a defender, an assessment is made on whether that touch significantly diverts the ball in terms of direction, from its intended destination. No player target is used unless one is clear.

So if a corner is flicked on slightly and scored at the far post, an assist will likely be awarded.

If however, it is deemed that the ball would not have reached the far post without the flick, or if the touch diverts the ball's angle away towards the edge of the box, then maybe no assist is given.

It's a judgement call based on the extent of the touch or touches.

Going back to the KDB cross. The intended destination was also clearly not Gomes. So what was your view on the area that KDB intended to hit with the cross?

Based on the trajectory, it was deemed the near post. It's a flat cross, which doesn't appear to be aimed at the far post.

Aguero occupied the near post area and scored the goal. I don't think he's trying to hit the far post but it's a difficult call.

I don't think he was trying to hit anything/anyone in particular, he was just trying to get it in between the defence/keeper like most players do when crossing like that - in this case he failed, and it was also nowhere near Aguero. He's basically been credited for a bad cross imo.

Yeah, it can be argued and was reviewed. But when there is no clear target - like you say - the call comes down to assessing the intended destination area of the pitch for the pass/cross and whether the eventual scorer occupied that area. It was decided that, in this case, Aguero did occupy the intended destination area and looking at the cross the players present who could potentially meet it, I think its fair enough.

It is a failed cross, so maybe the rules need refining further but then there's the risk of adding further complication.

The fact that the intended destination was bypassed makes the difference imo and should be assist not given. Aguero had no chance of scoring from KDB pass.

Judging if destination is bypassed should be clear.

I think the intervention by the keeper was singularly the effective the primary reason for the goal, not the cross.

Irrespective of where KdB was trying to generally put the ball, the trajectory was materially changed, actually not just a changed trajectory (like a flick when the ball continues on it path and general direction) but the ball returned back along the path from where it actually came from in the first place.

The ‘intended area’ surely relates to the situation where the ball takes a deflection and CONTINUES in its inteded direction and not rebounds back along its flight path AFTER it has reached it intended destination - I think this point is key?

In my humble opinion and irrespective of any interpretation of the rules that is never an assist.

Can’t they just apply common sense? It all comes from OPTA after all doesn’t it and they are surely interested in an accurate reflection (if not interested in FPL). Take Alli last night. It’s ridiculous for it not to be an assist for Kane. It’s not recorded by a robot so surely the human can differentiate between Alli needing two bites at the cherry vs Alli missing and another player scoring.

It can be if the rules state that's it's decided on the eye by and independent. For me that will just make it even worse tho! Won't ever be the same person for a start.

It's harsh on Kane's pass - I agree. But the rules are clear that, when a player has two attempts to score, it is deemed that he "assists himself" with his second shot.

If that rule is bent based on the quality of pass received or "common sense" then matters risk becoming more inconsistent.

Maybe the rule for two shots by the same player should be relaxed to add more assists. That's another argument.

Yes this! I hate it when a player hits the post and then scores with the second attempt. No assist for this!

I have no argument that Kane's "assist" by the rules isn't an assist. I started the post by saying one for you and fpl towers to possibly review rules wise for your own benefits, and ours of course! Slight simplification and take out the subjectivity (most of it anyway)

Why not just make it "last player on the scoring team to touch the ball before the goal gets an assist". May be some rare situations where it doesn't feel right but it's 100% objective.

The rule would be quite clear - could be 100 touches. That would be one of those situations where it would seem wrong but that's rare and at least everyone would know where they stood.

Or, if you like, make it 2 or more touches by defenders = no assist

TFF use key contributions and it works extremely well.

3 points for an opta assist.

2 points for a key contribution.

Problem solved and FPL stops making people angry (which unfortunately it seems very good at).

The bonus algorithm could be tweaked to remove KCs.

TFF also offer partial clean sheets, which once again stops making people angry about 58th minute substitutions and the like.

FPL seem to have a desire to irk people with technicalities and complex burcreacy within their rules.

I for one preferred fantasy league as was so simple. But it's not free and non of your mates play it so somewhat forced into FPL... don't get me wrong... great game and the functionality is superb IMO.

The key contributions in TFF are worth 3 points just like an assist. In fact there's no distinction. Assists are also referred to as key contributions. I actually think 2 points for the assist of the assist would be fairer though

First of all I have to point out, that I think FPL are doing a great job. Like Mark says - the rules can justifie all of the assists.
I used to play the Danish version of FPL, and they are freaking terrible when it comes to assists.

There has only been one time where I heavily disagreed (Bakayoko G Willian A vs. Huddersfield). To me that was Löwe OG Bakayoko assist - simply because the shot would have hit the corner flag if Löwe did not touch it.

However I like the idea of IDA and DA assist with a 1-point-difference, but I think it will make the rules even more complicated, and harder to justifie every assist given (I think there will always be a grey zone, where people would feel 'cheated').

I don't like the idea of giving an assist for every goal. Alli messed up Kane's assist yesterday. Blame Alli not the rules - he could just have scored on his first shot? 😉 That is life, and I don't really see the need to change the rules, but if you could make the IDA and DA in a way that would make the rules easier and remove subjectiveness I would support the 1-point-difference. Would give people another reason to pay for FK- and cornertakers such as Eriksen and KDB.

Great post and it is a great game, no doubts.

We are all different so don't expect us all to agree on a change, but useful if those get to see some opinion on it.

One thing I don't get, why is DA and NDA more complex? Yes it adds something so by definition is more complicated, but by adding it you remove 90% of the current complication? Therefore less complicated... it may just be me!

Because I still feel, that and IDA must be when the ball changes direction, and that would still keep the subjectiveness in the rules to some extend.

As an example: Llorentes goal yesterday. Personally I think the Swansea defender touched the ball with his hair. Would that be an IDA assist to Eriksen or a DA to Eriksen. If IDA the rules would suggest, that every time an opponent touches the ball an IDA is given (even though you can barely see it). Or should it be a DA because the hair touching the ball did not alter the direction of the ball. My point is, that if Eriksen would be awarded with an IDA people would be furious, but if you were to award him with a DA it would keep the subjectiveness judging every goal when touched slightly by an opponent.

So how would you award Eriksen on yesterdays free kick if the defenders hair touched the ball? And who would decide if the hair touced the ball?

I think that applies to any part of the game, McCauley the obvious example. Nothing anyone can do about that. If it's deemed the defender touched it you get one point less, surely something like that happens no more than once a year. I just think the example you mention is part of any decision like brunt not getting his assist for above goal. But very rare and probably can't be resolved. The major point here tho is that with NDA, bar very rare examples, the points diff is 1 not 3. I see your point but nothing will be 100% accurate, I just think this reduces the subjectivity in most areas and lessens the pain where it can't?

Okay fair point. I was just trying to challenge you a bit. Every Eriksen owner would claim the defender did not touch the ball yasterday, and every non-owner would say: "that's the rules, stop complaining" (just like now) 😉 But with a mere 1-point difference it would be easier to swallow - I will give you that! 🙂

It needs to be challenged, I'm not saying it's definitely the right idea... and hadnt thought it all through because highly complex. Would need a meeting of fpl minds if they determined a change had potential. However on the invisible touches I just think it's impossible to account for... I still don't think either McCauley or lukaku touched it, certainly not enough to claim it but none of us will ever know.

I actually feel a better solution would be to award fewer FPL assists not more.

                        - Make a penalty miss -3 that way if it turns into an "assist" the guy missing the penalty gains nothing.
                        - Remove assists when a goal is scored from a FK. Winning a FK having the same value as winning a penalty is silly. I think FPL used to be like this.
                        - Remove the automatic "Last touched it = assist". If the ball bounces off someone's ass and they knew nothing about it, unless it's intentional it should not be an assist.... "but then how can you tell if its intentional" - use common sense

Then there's another grey area of when a player plays a basic pass to a teammate who could be 50, 60, 70 yards out who then creates a goal from a piece of individual brilliance. Hardly an assist in the spirit of the term.

Can't say I like the IDA idea, I think it would create a plethora of scenarios where players would be rewarded for nothing and it would likely breed more in-game fpl inconsistencies not fewer.

Penalty miss, yep that works if NDA doesn't... doesn't solve the bigger issue tho.

I ignored removing of assists because I know it's something they want so I don't think that's an option (maybe nothing is)

Idea was to take common sense out of it as that's always subjective, agree the off an ass(ist) is a bit lame but without it no goal so can see the ups and downs of that.

Where I don't necessarily agree is why NDA will create more inconsistencies.... it's plain and simple. No defensive touch DA. One defensive touch NDA, more than one nothing. Yep, may have a few extra NDAs, some one fires a diagonal cross out wide from edge of the box, hits defender on head, loops into box for striker to tap in. Kinda things. But for me that no different to kdb who is trying to cross away from keeper and fails and gets 3 points. Feel free to suggest some NDA past examples that would cause a stir, I don't think will be many. I just think in the end it's wrong that kdb fails a simple cross and gets 3 and Kane nails a perfect ball 50 yards and gets nothing at all.

Maybe in the end, it's just the assist to those when striker misses first time.....

I think always awarding the last teammate on the ball before a goal, is the simplest solution.

Unless two or more opposing players touches the ball in between.

The entire sport needs a paradigm shift on scoring. Think ice hockey. There are 2 assisters for each goal, and the assists are pretty generous (deflections and rebounds mean nothing). In this sport, there is only 1 assist given, on a stingy basis, and there are fewer goals. It truly is the least conducive sport for fantasy. Baseball, NFL, hockey and hoops are all more fantasy-oriented. Football is what it is, but maybe a tweak to the assist scoring category could make fantasy more interesting.

Yes but definitely wait for mid-week games in case of injuries

This. Cup games too for that matter. Coming from somebody who’s been burnt by international games in the past.

Keen on getting Aguero + Mahrez + Alonso but I don't think I can afford all 3. Which option below would you go with? It will take a few weeks to get there.

                      A) Morata, Mahrez, Alonso, RLC
                      B) Aguero, Mahrez, Rudiger, RLC
                      C) Aguero, Mahrez, Tarkowski, Lingard
                      D) Vardy, Mahrez, Alonso, Lingard
                      E) Aguero, Pogba, Alonso, TCarroll

If you can’t have all three I think Mahrez and Alonso better to have. Next week is a Cup game, Jesus might be back 2 games later and Aguero missed quite a few last night (although obviously he’ll get a lot of chances at City unless Pep decides to play a false 9)

                      A) Eriksen to Hazard
                      B) Morata to Aguero
                      C) Richarlson to Pogba
