How do De Bruyne and Sterling compare as FPL assets for 2020/21?

Fantasy Premier League managers may now find it harder to choose between Kevin De Bruyne (£11.5m) and Raheem Sterling (£11.5m) compared to last season.

The pair spent the 2019/20 campaign with a huge disparity between their prices, the Belgian starting £2.5m cheaper than his English colleague.

By the end of last season, he had risen £1.1m while Sterling ended it as he begun, priced at £12.0m. However, now the two players share the exact same price-point, budget concerns have become irrelevant and it is now a straight shoot-out between them.

READ MORE: FPL release first batch of player prices

De Bruyne comes into the new campaign on the back of a record-breaking 2019/20 season, registering 251 points, more than any other player.

That was the midfield maestro’s best-ever FPL score, after he involved himself in 36 of Manchester City’s goals. 13 of those were his own, his highest-ever tally in a Premier League season (13) while he equalled Thierry Henry’s record for most assists in one season (20, rising to 23 when adding Fantasy assists into the equation).

Surely with statistics like that, De Bruyne is still an auto-include for the new season? Right?

The Belgian is certainly an admirable option for 2020/21, a view we won’t dare try to disagree with, but it is worth saying that Sterling could be set for a big season based on the way he finished the last.

While De Bruyne registered an impressive 10 double-digit hauls in 2019/20, Sterling came very close to his colleague, posting a total of nine.

Five of those came during Project Restart where the Englishman outscored his Belgian colleague by 86 FPL points to 73. De Bruyne’s score of 19 on the final day made the comparison more respectable than it could have been too. Going into Gameweek 38+, Sterling was ahead by 78 to 54.

The question is whether or not Sterling can sustain such form across a whole season. He will need that if he is to rival De Bruyne for FPL value and backing. The fact that only the Belgian (2,798) and Ederson (3,072) recorded more minutes played among Manchester City players than Sterling last season (2,660) is an encouraging start – although both players could miss the start of the campaign if they are granted a delay because of Champions League involvement.

But in order to fully assess his potential as a premium set-and-forget midfielder, we need to look at Sterling’s underlying data.

How do KDB and Sterling compare for goal threat?

If Palace sold Zaha, I could see him taking Zaha's spot. He can be quite a direct runner, but he isn't the finisher that Palace need (neither is Bentenke on current form).

Really hoping this is a sign of friendly prices on Kane, Auba and Aguero as FWDs too, all 10-10.5 maybe.

9.5 is really interesting for Werner. Well played by FPL towers I feel.

They've kind of snookered themselves a bit re. how prices relate to one another with the KDB bargain price. Bruno 1m less than KDB is fair, and then Martial 1m less than Bruno would also be fair, but then that puts him at the same price as Werner (who is unproven) etc.

Hoping 9 for Martial as a FWD.

Would expect Rashford 9-9.5 as a mid too due to Bruno at 10.5 and on penos plus so many set pieces. The 1.5 difference could be redistributed handily elsewhere if brave enough to skip Bruno.

So basically, assuming Greenwood is 7.0/Mitro 6.5 - its now looking like you could have this 4-4-2 and still probably have 1.0 surplus in the bank:

    4.5 (4.0)
    TAA, VVD, Laporte, Doherty, (4.5)
    KDB, Bruno, Greenwood, Soucek, (4.5)
    Werner, Mitro, (4.5)

Liking the way this is going!

Or even Werner down to Ings at 8.0 to be honest

If Ings did what he did from GW6 onwards this year he'll do just fine as a striker... so you could have 3.0 in the bank by going:

          4.5 (4.0)
          TAA, VVD, Laporte, Doherty, (4.5)
          KDB, Bruno, Greenwood, Soucek, (4.5)
          Ings, Mitro, (4.5)

Mark always loved the 3 power mids setup too - e.g. Hazard, Salah, Sterling etc

I just can't get on board with more than two for some reason though - three just seems overkill when i can only captain one

Will be tough to ignore 3 premium mids if we have Salah, Mane, Sterling, KDB, Bruno, Rash, Auba & Son.

Its a frightening lineup for sure

Reckon I'd back KDB & Bruno's set pieces to help them be the "slow & steady" tortoises that win the race out of that pack of rabbits though, certainly on value if not on absolute points

All it takes is one injury or something odd to wreck any plans though - but two slots feels better for me for now as i can't resist those elite defenders!

        Might just take the gamble,

Yea that’s my logic. May as well get Vardy, last seasons golden boot winner for 0.5 more, or unproven PL player who could be rotated and played out of position?
I’m sure Werner will be a decent pick this season but can’t see myself ever starting with him.
Even if I don’t get Vardy, Jimi and Ings would be nice

Good question. He scored some for Leipzig last season. Between him and Jorginho now Willian has gone?

I think he will be on penalties. Him or Mount/Pulisic. Jorginho is history

Why would Mount or Pulisic be in contention? Werner has been regularly taking penalties for a while now, unlike those two.

Traore at 6.5 feels like a genuine option to me conpared to Lallana at 6.5 which I won't be considering.

Anyone else think Lallana is 0.5 too expensive?

Certainly prefer Hernandez at 6.0 over him too.

I think Lallana and Hernandez are 0.5m over. Traore at 6.5 would be interesting. He may be 7.0

My initial reaction to Traore was that he was a little bit expensive, having had a bad time owning him last season.

Wolves not in Europe this season but I still wonder about rotation/injuries with him, great player as he is in real life.

Wait and see with Hernandez. Beautiful player but I might hold back on Leeds to start.

Probably not, but it’s within the realms of possibility/natural variance.

If you buy into the theory that Salah somehow regresses to a shadow of the player he actually is when playing away games with Mane, then absolutely.

One and a half seasons - not entirely random. It picks up an end of Mo set of form so not designed to tweak stats.

          • 5 Years

Mane took off around Xmas that year and then matched him consistently since. No debate that Mo has the historic form - or better said form stretching back longer but that's a long stretch of equality.

            • 10 Years

Mo has 200 more points the past 3 years. If he gets over his regression, watch out!

Respective trajectories over last 3 seasons also interesting

        Points (Appearances, pens):

        - Salah: 300 (36,1) > 260 (38,3) > 230 (34,3)

        - Mane: 230 (29,0) > 220 (36,0) > 220 (35,0)

          • 14 Years
          3 years, 8 months ago

Actually - just ignore that ive made a balls of Mane's 17/18 - it should be a bigger upwards curve from 17/18

          Points (Appearances, pens):

          - Salah: 300 (36,1) > 260 (38,3) > 230 (34,3)

          - Mane: 150 (29,0) > 220 (36,0) > 220 (35,0)

            • 5 Years
            3 years, 8 months ago

            Yep

If you look past underlying stats and weight historic performances the price equality makes enough sense really. Argument for 0.5 but not clear cut.

It's the pricing compared to KdB that is the puzzler.

Richarlison plays as a central striker, same as Wood. Salah and Sterling play on the wings. They've classified this way for a while now...

          This.

Think his price is a little harsh though with CS and goals scored being reduced. 7.5, maybe 7 would have been fairer. If Ings comes in at 8 (like Callum Wilson did) nobody will touch Richarlison.

He started the last 2 games on the wing so there is a chance he’ll be reverse OOP. Not very appealing even if he plays a striker though, maybe a short term punt option at best.
