How Aubameyang compares to other FPL midfielders after positional change

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£12.0m) will be a midfielder in Fantasy Premier League next season following the game’s relaunch.

The move comes about following Aubameyang’s half-season spell on the left flank, with Mikel Arteta’s appointment as Arsenal manager in December signalling a change of role for the Gabon international in the Gunners’ attack.

The reclassification further swells the premium options available to us in the middle of the park, with Marcus Rashford (£9.5m) also making the move to ‘FPL midfielder’ and Kevin De Bruyne (£11.5m) and Bruno Fernandes (£10.5m) rising considerably in price.

How does Aubameyang compare with the other heavy hitters after his positional switch, then?

Our Members article below delves into the data.

Hello mate, like that team, I'm trying not to tinker too much until fixtures are announced, finding it difficult to want Mitro or a 6.5 striker (apart from Antonio) instead of Doherty/Laporte/VVD.

It looks like the final nail in the striker category coffin this year.

All the value is in midfielders and defenders this year unless Aguero or Kane get back to their form from 5 years ago.

I actually think Antonio is a great pick if he keeps his position as striker.

Mitrovic can be explosive and have to have at least 1 weak spot in GW1 with £100m budget

Antonio is great value in fairness. Just hope the likes of Werner or Kane rip it up. Game needs strikers to explode.

They are going to have to score goals if they don’t want to be relegated. If they score it will be Mitrovic. He gets something ridiculous like 40%+ of their goals. Plus he has proven he can do it in the premier league

I’m struggling to see where any sort of a template is going to emerge from this season...

Obviously the fixture release will have a say in this, but I can see that once the RMTs are in full flow, there’s going be a lot more variety in formations and personnel than in previous seasons.

        Agreed

For me it comes down to how Liverpool assets are priced in contrast to others.

Logically the triple up should be a slam dunk given how they ran away with last season but the majority of teams I've seen so far have two not three. Could change of course but that's likely as much down to fixtures as opposed to value.

      Yeah it's gonna be cool!

I'm excited for this season. Very interesting. FPL lowered the prices but then clustered all the big hitters in midfield. The end result is that you look at the list of players and all of them look good. Pretty impressive.

Yeah. Variance and unpredictable scenarios will swing things even more hugely now

And maybe team balance? Having the right 5.5m to 7.5m assets with 170+ points each and 8.5m+ assets with 190+ points each while others try to fit in as many 9.5m to 12.0m as they can while only being able to cap one per week

It should be, but inevitably FFS and Twitter will gravitate towards a ‘template’ - just don’t think that template will be as strong as previous seasons

    8. Brosstan
      • 9 Years

The good thing is there's so many options that there will always be an opportunity to go off template with really good players.

If Bruno/Salah/KDB/Greenwood is template you can go
      Auba/Mane/Rashford/Son...

4 excellent FPL picks in their own right

      1. Brosstan
        • 9 Years

And then there's also Sterling, Pulisic, Aguero/Kane etc. Looks like an exciting season. Also so far no Lundstram-esque bs to ruin the game, I personally hope no 4.0 enabler appears at all

          Good points here

Not sure we'll see the 50%+ owned kind of templates anymore, outside KDB and TAA... So having a different premium looks more like getting a member of a different template than the one you have. You can see this by checking current ownerships of premiums on the FPL site. Many 20%s to 30%s outside KDB, Bruno and TAA

Unless something major happens and we somehow get obvious assets, that is

Assists count for a lot. Assists differentiated Sterling from Mané last season... And obviously KDB from anybody else, even with his much fewer goals

Ziyech's unreal assist potential with the finishers who'll be around him feels like more of a steal at 8.0 than Werner's goal potential as a striker at 9.5 (note how Kane's 29 goal season had fewer points than KDB last season, with more minutes)

This leaves Antonio vs Soucek, and Antonio wins because Soucek depends more on headers than anything else for points, while Antonio is (expected to be) an Ings/Lukaku-like talisman

Yes. So was Kane with 29 goals

It takes... 30 goals? For Werner to match Rashford's potential from goals and assists, and that's if Rashford doesn't hit new heights

Then there's the problem of Ings and Jim being 1.0m cheaper, especially if you don't need a striker as a captain

Yeah but we're comparing Ziyech and Werner.

Ziyech last season in Eredivisie, which is a weaker division than Bundesliga, had 21 apps, 6 goals, 12 assists.

Werner has 34 apps, 28 goals, 8 assists.

            1. Ze_Austin
              • 5 Years
              3 years, 8 months ago

In isolation, Werner should outscore Ziyech

Once you factor in prices and alternatives, Ziyech beats Werner quite comfortably for overall team points... Except if you'd cap Werner as often as you'd cap a premium mid... Or if you limit your premium mids to accommodate Werner and cap him often

Has anyone ever won FPL playing four at the back for more than 5-10 GWs?

It always looks an attractive option pre-season to just buy and hold four premium to mid-priced defenders for the season. The reality, with all the chips and WCs factored in, never seems to work out like that.

It does seem to be the optimal strategy give the arbitrary disadvantage forwards have in the scoring system, which in my view is broken.

4/5 at the back is the optimal formation to get the most points. It's very boring though, requires patience and is almost close to set and forget.

I rather finish lower, make transfers and have fun.

BUT boring or not, do you think it is optimal strategy to follow ??

VVD Doherty Robbo will be highest point scorers (most likely) for 7m or less aren't they ??

Absolutely yes. Post season optimum points analyser has proven it to be. I done it for one season and finish 3k too, but it was honestly the most boring season playing FPL for me. You hardly make transfers, or take risks.

You're already getting it wrong here

Premium midfielders are absolutely fixture-proof. It's set-and-forget, unconditionally, because any transfer activity back there (except for injuries) will tempt you to get cheaper temporary defenders with good form instead, which doesn't sound bad in isolation, but is exactly where the impatience starts to show and affect other things

This happened once I sold Robbo last season

They had a dream fixture run in that period, unlikely they will get that again at the start of the season so highly likely to be a fair bit of regression.

If Willian is given the '10' slot then he'd be a solid pick. At 8m he'd be 4m cheaper than Aubameyang who'll need someone to give him the ball before he scores. Keep a very, very careful eye on how Arsenal set up.

  9. TheDragon

It seems like one of the biggest questions to start this season is:

To Aubameyang or not to Aubameyang?

Now classified as a midfielder he could potentially be the highest scoring player in the game.

But presumable most will be having TAA, Salah, KDB/Sterling, Bruno/Rashford/ Greenwood so Auba then takes up a lot of budget.

What are people are thinking currently?

See my post below. There are so many viable premium options. It’s pretty clear this season will come down to the lottery of having the right premium options at the right times. Ha a potential to be a season with the most extreme variance ever!

Not in my view. I think we can be super-confident that Liverpool, City and United will set off like a house on fire, hence 9 of my Starting XI are from those 3. I'm not as confident that Chelsea and Arsenal - or any other sides bar Wolves will start off in great shape. I'm happy to sit back and observe them over 2 or 3 games first.

Depends on opening fixtures but after giving it thought, I'm almost certain to go without him and will transfer a premium to him if needs be.

Are there any articles I can read about selling players when they’re holding value?

At the start of the season i tend to look at similarly priced players as interchangeable.

Liverpool have hard fixtures and Arsenal easy you take out Mane and put in Aubameyang.

But when if you lose 0.4m for selling Mane and can’t get him back?

Is there a point of no return with player investment?

It's a difficult question to answer because it would depend on what club they play for.
I sold Vardy last season even though his price was about $1.0m more than what I bought him for. I did this because his form and his clubs form had dropped off significantly.
But let's say for example, KDB was out of form and his price was $1.0 more than bought price, I'd keep him because his team is just too good for him to be out of form for long

        • Fantasy Football Scout Member

So form is more important than fixture. Because if a player isn’t scoring, people aren’t buying them, their price isn’t going up.
I’m thinking a half dead team with half bandwagons is a strategy.

    The death of the template

With the pricing this year and the wealth of Premium options In midfield this could be the most exciting season in years

Salah, Mane, KDB , Sterling, Aubameyang, Son, Bruno, Rashford - all premium, all explosive, all captain material and you can’t own more than 4 of them (possibly 3). And this is before we factor in the chelsea lads of Pulisic, Ziyech and Werner.

Add onto that how expensive the ‘medium’ strikers are (ings/ Jimenez) it’s going to be a very interesting season!

Soueck is no fodder. He scored 3 goals post restart and was 5th for shots in the box among all mids below 8.0m which included Antonio who was misclassified and Pulisic who now costs above 8.0m.

Werner will likely be on penalties.

If we take into account that Willian scored 4 last season, including 3 since restart and that Pulisic will likely be fit for start of the season, doesn't this make Werner very appealing?

Also, if this whole VAR thing goes down, we could see a significant increase in PKs which then makes:

Salah, KdB, Fernandes, Kane, Werner, Auba, Vardy, Jimenez all suddenly look much much better.

Every season I punt on a new signing who is tipped for greatness (Pepe/ Ceballos anyone).

Every season I get burnt as they take a few weeks to adjust to life in the premier league.

I really hope Werner is awesome as we desperately need the striker category to have some decent options but I’ll be watching the chelsea lads (Werner, Ziyech and Pulisic) in GW1

No love for jiminez at 8.5. No europe. Postman. Bargain imo.

Ings more explosive, and IF he can stay fit would outscore Jimi

ings is the obvious other option at that price but I can't look past how much of a better team wolves are.

Not when Martial costs 9.0m and was like 2nd highest scorer post lockdown...

Thoroughly dependable, good price. a goal every game-and-a-half, never a brace. But the community is quiet around strikers at that price-point, Ings as well.

He's a very slow & steady sensible option who we will almost certainly regret not getting at various points of the season

      I'll repost this

Looking for people for a mini-league

Want to make it competitive but I also want to be able to win it 🙂 Conceptually it's designed for people who want to be top 10K but aren't there yet. Be nice to have a ML where you know who else is in it. Regulars here seems a start.

Open question whether I'll bother excluding any pros who sign up. Record says I'm unlikely to bother

      Top 10k Finally

Is the requirement to join that you’ve never finished top 10k?

          Theoretically

If you can show that actually you’re completely average I’d reconsider 🙂 Want it relatively small but competitive enough

It’s the counter to the top 10k any season which Bubz or someone similar will run away with

I did think about that and wasn't sure so didn't mention anything, could upgrade Saka but seems pointless if he's your first sub, maybe get a nailed sub to go with.

Not bad but i think you could get away with losing VVD and use the money elsewhere like upfront

Tierney at 5.5m really doesn't appeal.

Saliba at 4.5m is much better value. Or just get AWB at 5.5m, his attacking potential has improved of late and MUN defense will continue to be quite strong.

That makes sense I could swap tierny to saliba and that gives me more of an option to go to 3/5/2

Mitro back in my team from the start just like 3 years ago. Have a nagging feeling that he’s one of those players that is too good for the championship but not good enough for PL though.

Yeah but he lost a fair bit of weight during lockdown and looks quicker so therefore could actually run on the end of things which was what he was struggling with most of last season

Absolutely no value in the City defence.

Laporte and Walker at 6.0. Why would anyone pick one of these over Doherty?

The rest of the City defence is like an overpriced lottery.

Laporte at 6.0m is not a bad deal. If he's over his injury worries, he could easily get close to the 178 pts he got a few seasons ago by playing every game.

      McCarthy 4.0

Too much in defense. Lose Doherty and Egan for cheaper. Traore, Son and Wood aren't the greatest picks imo.
