Hall of Fame number one Fábio Borges joins Fantasy Football Scout for 2020/21

We at Fantasy Football Scout are delighted to announce that we’ve added yet another high-profile name to our all-star cast of contributors for the 2020/21 season.

And Fantasy Premier League managers don’t come much more illustrious than Fábio Borges, who currently sits atop our Career Hall of Fame.

You’ll need a pretty impressive season history to claim first place in those rankings and Fábio boasts an incredible track record of five successive finishes in the top 5,000 of FPL.

Two of those have been inside the top 1k, with his best-ever overall rank of 95th recorded in 2018/19.

Fábio has never finished outside the top 20,000 in six seasons of playing the game and, just to underscore his prowess, he was also the winner of Ragabolly’s inaugural Virtual FPL competition over the summer.

The Lisbon resident will be involved with Fantasy Football Scout in a Pro Pundit capacity and will be writing articles throughout the season.

Fábio follows site founder Mark Sutherns in joining our star-studded team of contributors, which includes some of the best FPL managers in the world.

The likes of Lateriser, Zophar and Tom Freeman, who have multiple top 1k finishes between them, have come aboard for another year and we are thrilled that they will be writing for us once again in 2020/21.

While there will be our usual offering of free content from these elite names, only Premium Members of Fantasy Football Scout will get unrestricted access to all of their analysis and team reveals.

Full-year subscriptions are available for the pre-season price of £17.50 until August 31, while rolling monthly Memberships can be purchased for £2.99.

    Fanteam

    1. Join in GW1
    2. join in GW2 and take 70% of average points for GW1

So basically I get to create a team with Manchester players and some information based on GW 1 in exchange of around 20 points.

I can sort of see the logic of 2 but fpl is about having fun so surely it has to be 1

      20 points = 5 hits.

Surely a good GW1 and five hits ends you up better than 2

Didn't think of it this way.
Surely if I make 6 transfers, I could get to the team I would make in GW2.

        Thanks

Please can I have some thoughts on this draft 0.5 ITB

    Rodak
    Taa Vinagre saliba kwp
    Salah auba maddison pereira
    Werner mitro

    Fabri Ferguson smallbone martial

Maddison and auba can become kdb/ sterling and greenwood

      Benching a 9.0 player is sub-optimal.

Rather have Ings for two weeks than Martial for one.

Wolves sign a LB and Vinagre’s a no-go and wait ‘til the Shield to find out about Saliba.

its for 1 wk. you prob safe a trade. Martial could easily outscore the alternative(s) you play in wk 1 + wk 2 vs cpal alone.

Guess there’s no *right* answer. I just don’t like the thought of intentionally putting 1/10 of my budget on the bench when it could be on the field. Also, it’s Martial - he’s not Messi!

Good team, mate. I currently have Bruno on the bench. Spurs are nagging at me but I think Son, who wasn’t great when I owned him last season, might just be a transfer waiting to happen. And Kane would just bust my structure I fear - I really like Werner so I’m quite committed to him.

Also Rodak an interesting call. Fulham have nice fixtures after Arsenal and they are much stronger defensively than they were last time in the PL.

Planning transfers is great until you leave 4.5 keeper gets sent off in GW1!

Given that someone once won FPL without owning a single Liverpool player all season, I think too much attention is being paid to the two Manchester clubs’ players. Plenty of great players to build with for GWs 1-2.

Planning a transfer or two down the line is fine. Having a specific plan to do X in GW2, then Y in GW3, then Z in GW4 is bound to fall due to circumstances like you mention

    6. Flair
      • 3 Years
      3 years, 8 months ago

Totally agree. Just looking at City and United's fixtures makes me fine with going without more than 1-2 of them till GW10. Have a United player for Palace and Brighton in GW2-3, sure. After that, they have Spurs, Newcastle, Chelsea, Arsenal and Everton till GW8. Don't see the point in having any United players for that run. City are trickier, I won't be bringing in any for GW2 against one of the best defenses in the league for sure. After that they have an okay fixture run for four games but those games include Leicester and Arsenal... then three very tough games. I know KDB is fixture proof but he also isn't 9.5 anymore. Aguero could hit a few massive hauls whenever he starts though, I'd advise anyone to have a route to bring him in. Explosive, world class, at his cheapest and somehow at 4.6% ownership and it's not like anyone will be bringing him in after the BGW... an opportunity too good to miss out on.

Can united assets rise before gw2 or are they price locked? Looking at getting Bruno before gw3 so I can keep Vardy for gw2, will be prices out if he rises

No way they'd be price locked. As soon as GW deadline is done, everyone will rise like anything 😆

You're only price locked when flag changes.

Wise words. Problem with doing this is that you get to a point where a player you have had in draft number 656 explodes and you start getting annoyed because you didn't keep him. Setting yourself up to be really annoyed no matter what happens

In GW1 you always get people saying "damn - almost had x player" after they haul. That usually means they did 300 drafts of which this player happened to be in one of them.

Think the GW 2 & 3 fixtures are perfect for City to avoid getting KDB ASAP in GW 2.
Maybe selling Auba to KDB in GW 3 is an option.

Will have Shaw on bench & planning Tony transfer next GW. Think this should be enough to navigate.

I think the idea of upside chasing is going for the lesser owned player for the maximum benefit, so let’s say everyone goes for KDB in GW3 and he already has massive ownership, the upside chasing move would be to get Sterling instead.

LR is successful with it as he has a personality and style which allows him to ignore the noise. It isn't a new concept. It is just the way he describes how he plays and he is very good at it. Only noobs who don't have their own style yet will think this is totally new

Just that ‘upside-chasing’ seems to have been picked up by the community and now everyone talks about it as if it’s some sort of genius new style of play.

Funny game fpl, it is the only game i know where players go out there way to help their rivals.

Thoughts on Maddison as a punt ?

(wba BUR mci WHU AVL) in first 5 gws

Got 1.5 itb to upgrade to Greenwood or Ziyech/Pulisic if he fails in opening 2gws

Think 2 gws will be enough to judge who's Better pick between Ziyech and Pulisic

    (Already got Werner btw)

Team breakdown, first draft in a little while, happy with the balance but not completely sold. Detailed summary below and thoughts appreciated. Will return comments to repliers should I see them post.

    McCarthy | Nyland
    TAA | Doherty | Vinagre | Ayling | Ferguson
    Salah | Auba | Ziyech | Soucek | Stephens
    Martial | Jimenez | Mitrovic
    --------
McCarthy: I like Southampton’s fixtures and defensively they became a lot more resilient post lockdown from memory. I was toying with KWP as a rotating 4.5 defender instead but I think their fixtures are so good over an extended period that I’m happy with McCarthy until my first Wildcard.
Nyland: A playing fodder keeper until Villa sign a new keeper.

TAA: No explanation needed, can’t really go without Trent given his ownership and explosive ability. I’m not confident enough in Pool’s defence to double-up given their fixtures, but good clean sheet odds coupled with explosive attacking threat makes Trent a must-have premium defender.

Doherty: I really like him as an option and once I saw Wolves’ fixtures from the start through to November he was nailed in my team. Has great underlying stats and can’t see any reason to spend the money elsewhere given how great Wolves are defensively and how much he offers in terms of attacking potential.

Ayling: I think Leeds will be resilient but the main reason I have him is the GW2 fixture against Fulham to cover my Wolves double-up. I’m happy to keep him on the bench until Leeds are less of an unknown entity and their fixtures turn, but then again I may wildcard by that point.

Vinagre: If Wolves sign another LWB I’m be ditching him for someone like Justin or KWP but for now I’m liking the double-up with Doherty. The plan is to bench him for GW2 and play Ayling, who has a plum fixture at home to Fulham.

Ferguson: Has a chance of playing and with my team structure I’m kinda banking on him starting GW1 (as cover for my Man Utd blank). Home to Southampton isn’t a bad fixture given how Palace defend against the mid-table and lesser teams. They’ve got a few injuries so a fair chance he starts and has been talked up by Woy.

Salah: Messed with some Salah-less teams but the options such as Son or Bruno don’t have the same explosiveness. Bruno’s returns excluding pens have been average and Son hugging the chalk in a defensive Mourinho team doesn’t appeal either. Will captain gameweek one and monitor, though given how frustrating he was towards the end of the season, I won’t have much patience if he starts blanking.

Auba: Two plum fixtures and then he’s out to KDB for me, the same plan as everyone else. I think the reclassification makes him more enticing but his all-round game isn’t enough for me to see him as top value at 12 mil. His assist potential is poor and he doesn’t get enough chances to explode regularly. I feel Willian may change that but it’s all up in the air in terms of Arteta’s plans; they could sell Laca, play Auba up front which may change my thinking.

Ziyech: For 8 million this is a punt I’m willing to take. We’ve seen the likes of Alphonso Alves come from Holland with 30 goals in the bag and completely bomb in the Prem, so I’m not getting my hopes up. I’ve been a sucker for a couple of his youtube montages. To be fair he has the RW spot nailed and has impressive assist numbers, but if he flops it’s an easy switch to Greenwood.

Soucek: 3.5 PPG for a 5 mil that enables the rest of my team to prosper is fair game for me. He was also unlucky not to get further points given some of the positions he took up, in particular the Norwich game springs to mind. His first two fixtures are against teams susceptible to conceding headed chances so he’s nailed on for me. What he allows me to do with the rest of my team and the value he provides is unmatchable.

Stephens: Nailed 4.5 fodder who occasionally gets a return, can’t ask for anymore. Probably won’t ever be in my first 11, though.

Martial: His returns post lockdown were phenomenal, and it seems Ole has gotten through to him and his wasted potential is finally being realised. He’s the focal point to everything Utd do and his goal involvement since restart 6G 4A shows that. Very underpriced given his turn in form and a much better option than Werner for me, if you can stomach that blank in GW1.

Jimenez: The most reliable forward in the league and a great price in terms of what he provides. He’s improving year on year and I wouldn’t be surprised if he surpassed his returns from last season. No Europa factor can only help, and this Wolves side is very stable and generally play with consistency. Most people debating him or Ings, I think Jimenez edges it though both are great picks.

Mitrovic: The player I’m least sure of in my team as he’s something of a wildcard. Decent fixtures so get some early returns and the focal point of everything Fulham do. On pens and at 6 million I don’t think there’s better out there. I also think a 4.5 option doesn’t allow me to transform my team enough, the midfield prices are very skewed and the midbracket doesn’t provide much. May swap for Wood if he starts slowly, I’m a big fan of the Burnley striker.

Really like it - because I’ve actually quite a similar setup at the minute 🙂

Went (Greenwood, Werner, Ings) vs (Ziyech, Martial, Jimmy)

And Ben Johnson + 0.5 ITB instead of Ayling

Idea is to do Salah, Auba > Bruno, KDB

      Then Mitro becomes Jimmy GW4

Great looking & flexible setup with lots of options to allow reactions to stuff overall

Thanks pal, much appreciated. Can see your thinking for your trio instead of mine, could easily swing either way. Liking your plan, I wouldn't pre-plan on selling Salah if I were you, he's very much a wait and see.

          • 14 Years

Yeah - selling Salah isn’t really for the faint hearted, or even arguably for the sound of mind & body...

          Particularly if (when? 😉 ) he mega-hauls vs Leeds GW1 🙂

But in fairness, I’m only really seeing two standout captaincy fixtures post Leeds & pre-GW16 so it may have limited downside

Plus those those “mega-haul" scenarios are much more rare than perhaps we give him credit for... He's definitely been on a bit of a downswing since ~Jan'19/the last ~24 months or so...

          Since GW24 of 2018/19:
          - 49 Appearances (48 starts, 1 sub)
          - 2 treble returns
          - 7 double returns
          - 17 single returns
          - 23 blanks

So whilst he has returned in just over half of his appearances (26/49)... when it comes to "hauls"... he really only has two big ones:

          - Home to Huddersfield GW36 2018/19 - 2G 1A - 18 points April'19
          - Away to Brighton GW34 2019/20 - 2G 1A - 18 points Jul'20

Beyond that it was really 7 double returns (each between 12-14 points - very good scoring)

Then the remaining 40 appearances were either blanks (23) or lots of little 5-9 pointers (17)

In a way, the GW1 blanks might just act as an inadvertently fortuitous way for those who had originally planned to go with Bruno over Salah (like myself) to tap into one of Salah’s hauls “for free”, who knows what way it will all go

Wow, that's some great work thanks for sharing. Definitely felt he's been dropping off somewhat but didn't realise it was quite as substantial. May have to rethink mid-term plans. Nice one 🙂

What's your thoughts on Bruno? The penalty numbers are just not sustainable and when you take that away, 10.5 seems too steep to me.

            1. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus
              • 14 Years

He’s basically guaranteed to regress - at his current rate of 8.4 PPG he’d score 320 points which just won’t happen..

But even if he regresses 15%, 20%, 25% he’s still hitting levels that would see him score 270, 250, 230 points on a season...

Which is in the Salah range - but just for 1.5m less

Personally think thE penalty factor is both a positive, and blown a little out of proportion

At the end of the day he still got 12 non-penalty attacking returns in an unbeaten 14 game stretch (PLUS the 4 penalties) that included games against the team directly above them (City) plus the 4 teams directly below them (Chelsea, Wolves, Leicester, Spurs)

Looks a good bet to finish somewhere close to Salah, maybe slightly ahead, maybe slightly behind - but he’ll do it all for 10.5 so should be value

              (Hopefully!)

      Great post and team.

I'm looking at something very similar. I think Martial is worth benching in GW 1 to avoid 'booking in a transfer.

Soucek looks unbelievable value and is a great enabler.

I'm with you on Ziyech too. Looks like he'll have the RW nailed and consensus seems to be that he'll be on FKs and set pieces.

Question: how much do you prefer Martial and Ziyech over Werner and Greenwood?

      1. Jonesfromthere
        • 11 Years
        3 years, 8 months ago

Thanks man! I think the flexibility this team provides is great which is needed this season more than any other. I hate pre-planning transfers so a Utd player on the bench is a must.

There's not loads in that dilemma, and everyone seems to be stuck on it. I think Martial's form is hard to look past, and Greenwood's underlying stats aren't that impressive, he tailed off a little. Ziyech being nailed and on set pieces in a free-scoring Chelsea team so these factors swayed me.

KDB in GW3 I prefer Martial to Bruno and may get Greenwood if he starts strongly. Seen Bruno's stats without pens? It's just not sustainable tallying.

Like it. Sound reasoning for all players.

I have a similar defence and midfield, considering Ayling for the same reasons as you.

And while you have Martial on your bench, I currently have Bruno. I know it’s less than ideal to have that much money on the bench (and I may yet go for Son or someone else) but I’m wary of budgeting for one-week moves. Could always do Salah to Bruno for GW2 but I’d like to own Salah, Auba and Bruno, before doing Auba to KdB for GW3.

      All subject to change obviously!

      Good luck with it all.

Thanks mate, I agree that one-week moves are a bad idea. People are considering a GW2 wildcard which I find baffling. I also agree that Salah shouldn't be a planned transfer out, he could start very strongly which will mess your plans up quite a bit.

Very similar set up - just think you’re on the wrong 4.0 at Palace if you want a sure starter

Roy has talked up Ferguson - when he joined the club - context is quite important here. The quote isn’t that recent. Ferguson will be threatening RB spot of Ward but unless he gets all the best preseason minutes he’ll be a doubt in week 1

Mitchell in week 1 could be nailed though - all he needs is PvA down really and that’s quite possible

      * have longer answer as well but given it too often - only replying here as you’re obviously reasoning everything out . May be wrong of course but Palace fans I know have agreed with this analysis.

            @ Pingi

Can you see a scenario where both Ferguson & Mitchell are benched? Or does one of them always have to start while PVA is injured?

As in with Ferguson also being LB-capable - Does it effectively mean minimum one of them has to start each week, if not both?

Might go with the two of them if so...

Ferguson is perhaps 3rd in line on the left - I think he has played there - a bit of a Martin Kelly type who plays on the right, can do the left but may really be a CB. A WBA fan might know more - this is interpreting an interview with him

              Guessing of course

Yeah he’s definitely caught my eye - mainly because of the price tag... but there are some good YouTube clips of him as well

Not sure what caused the lack of appearances at the second half of the season though - injury? Or dropped because of the upcoming Palace move?

Bilic was very angry at losing him apparently...

A young Micah Richards at 4.0 would be just what the FPL doctor ordered!

Injured - fairly big one - fits in with Palace ethos well 🙂

The RH interview bigging him up said he hadn't been able to train for months - part of my rationale for being cautious.

And yes the Bilic reaction caught my eye too.

Anyone considering the Strategy of WCing in GW2. I can see a few positives.....

    1. You get to treat GW1 like a free hit, loading up the best 11 for that Specific GW (Antonio, etc)
    2. You can discard that team and then select your best team moving forward, with a full GWs info
    3. You can bring United & City assets straight in
    4. You can maximise team value from all the transfers and price rises flooding in during GW1

In the 2nd sentence... Wolves seem to play well against Top6 sides.

Too much of a risk as too many unknowns for GW1

FFS = "my way good, all other ways bad" - people need to accept there are pros and cons to every approach, and nobody knows at this stage what the best approach will be. Will probably be down to luck as much as anything.

Luck is always a huge huge factor (way more than most think), but you’ve got to try to find a way to get the numbers on your side though right? Otherwise you’re just pure gambling.

Some methods will carry a higher points expectation than others.

Exactly this. You can be either lucky or unlucky and all you can do is to maximise the probabilities.

badly want fernandes, kdb and rashford.
don't know whether to have 3 placeholders(-4 for gw3) or just WC after gw 1
can't decide which strategy is best to start the season

Hi Guys, playing around with yet another draft. A bit crazy?

    McCarthy
    TAA, VVD, Doherty
Salah, Pulisic (if not fit then Ziyech), Podence, ASM
    Werner, Mitro, Adams

Nyland, KDB (not a fan of planning transfers), Ferguson, Mitchell

When KDB comes back in for GW2, it’ll be a rotation between Podence and Adams.

No united players for me (mini league rules).
    Thoughts?

I will try to wait as much as possible. People that WCed early last year got Pukky and Ashley Barnes as their strikers.

    @Gregor:

Using the Comparison Tool in the Member's Area on mobile (tried Chrome and Internet Explorer), and the Comparison stats are no longer side-by-side? It's showing Player 2 beneath Player 1, instead of side-by-side.

Has something changed or am I doing something wrong?

There's a lot of elements being worked on to improve the members area at present so something may have been accidentally tweaked.

    Thoughts on Ake.

Does he start every game? Is he a bench player?
    Looking for a 5.5m defender.

Joe gomez also an option but he was getting subbed at half time a lost wasn't he?

Think Laporte and Garcia may start as first choice CB pairing

City have almost signed Koulibaly and Garcia is likely to move to Barcelona.

I wonder if Willian at #10 will be creating enough chances for Auba. Arsenal's issue last season was a complete lack of creativity and Willian seems to have been signed to help that issue not occuring again. He had great chance creation after the break, at least from what I remember from watching him. I suppose the issue is if he's motivated enough to do so. If Auba's at ST and Willian is at CAM that could be a very potent combo.
