Willian dominates in Aubameyang’s first game as FPL midfielder

FULHAM 0-3 ARSENAL

  • Goals: Alexandre Lacazette (£8.5m), Gabriel (£5.0m), Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£12.0m)
  • Assists: Willian x3 (£8.0m)
  • Bonus: Gabriel x3, Willian x2, Lacazette x1

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£12.0m) delivered for his legion of FPL owners with a second-half strike in Arsenal’s Gameweek 1 3-0 win at Fulham.

Despite a quiet first half, the premium midfielder curled home a goal very reminiscent of the strike he netted against Liverpool in the Community Shield last month.

Crucially, it was Aubameyang’s switch in position that made his Gameweek 1 outing satisfactory for his 1.5 million captainers. A combination of a goal and yellow card would have made for just five points last season, but reclassified, it afforded him a total of seven, considering Arsenal kept a clean sheet.

There was some concern over Aubameyang’s positioning in the opening period, which saw him operating rather wide and tracking back a lot. Aubameyang’s defensive duties were a far from ideal development, not just because it initially limited his attacking threat but also because it meant he had to make several “forward’s challenges” on the opposition, earning him a first-half yellow card.

Furthermore, Aubameyang’s opening day goal was severely overshadowed by a surprise monster haul from new signing Willian (£8.0m), who is surely set to become the bandwagon midfielder for Gameweek 2.

The former Chelsea man was not even expected to start at Fulham, having missed most of Arsenal’s pre-season campaign. But he came straight into the side, displacing the in-form Bukayo Saka (£5.5m) and registering a hat-trick of assists. It could have been an even bigger haul for Willian, who hit the post with a free-kick in the 27th minute.

Alexandre Lacazette (£8.5m) was another unexpected starter, at the expense of Eddie Nketiah (£6.0m), and he opened the season’s scoring in scruffy style. The Frenchman tapped home after Marek Rodak (£4.5m) saved an effort from Willian.

“[Lacazette] is in my plans. He is a player that I like a lot. But he has Eddie [Nketiah] on his back, or next to him I would say, he’s gonna push him and whoever is in better shape is going to play. The same for the rest of the team.” – Mikel Arteta

“It was the best way to start the season. We wanted to win and have a clean sheet and respect what the coach wanted. Everyone is happy. He wants us to be perfect. We worked in the week for this kind of game. We have a lot of big ambitions. I want to help the team to be on top, I know it is my job. I am really happy [at Arsenal]. It is only the press and other people that say I am not. I want to play and win titles. We want to be aggressive with and without the ball and improve every aspect of our game.” – Alexandre Lacazette

Willian was again the provider at the beginning of the second half, with centre-half debutant Gabriel (£5.0m) heading home his corner.

And he bagged a hat-trick of assists when Aubameyang converted his cross-field pass in the second half, the premium midfielder cutting inside Denis Odoi and curling home.

“With Willian I knew the performance would come straight away.” – Mikel Arteta

As a result, Fantasy managers are targeting Fulham’s defence for attacking returns moving forward. They face Leeds next, who exploited Liverpool’s well-documented ongoing defensive issues at Anfield on Saturday afternoon.

Despite impressing with the ball in spells, the Cottagers were suspect in defence at Saturday lunch-time. There was too much space afforded to an unmarked Lacazette for the first goal, Gabriel rose unchallenged in the box for the second and Aubameyang found it too easy to cut inside the right-back for the third.

Michael Hector (£4.5m) denied the FPL midfielder a brace by clearing an Aubameyang shot off the line in the 79th minute, as the Cottagers struggled to keep the scoreline respectable.

Reflecting on a tough opening day for his side, Scott Parker told the BBC:

The big lesson today is to understand the fine margins in this division mean you can get punished. At this level you have to be clinical and make teams pay and on the flip side the first time they get in our box and they score. I didn’t like the second half as much. The second goal was a poor goal. At that moment we have to understand how crucial it is and I felt we were a little bit weak and accepted it. When you are a team like us that has come from the Championship you can’t let defeat after defeat really cripple you. We are going to lose more than we win but as a team you have to keep learning and developing. It has been a quick turnaround for us. We have brought players in that will improve us and hopefully there will be more. We need to get them up to speed quickly. Set plays are vitally important. We looked a little accepting. There is a realism here. Teams that struggle in this league are teams that let things get to them. We may lose two or three on the bounce, the important thing is to not let defeats get to you.” – Scott Parker

Arsenal admittedly almost conceded instantly after an early error from Gabriel, who had not played a competitive match since March. The defender allowed an Ainsley Maitland-Niles (£5.0m) back-pass to go by him, which nearly saw Aboubakar Kamara (£5.0m) get on the scoresheet but the FPL midfielder was denied by quick reactions from Bernd Leno (£5.0m).

However, beyond that, it was a relatively routine clean sheet for the Gunners as Arteta continues to transform them at both ends of the field.

While Gabriel will take plenty of headlines for his goal, Arsenal’s shut-out was, in part, earned in no small part by Rob Holding (£4.5m), who operated on the right-hand side of Arteta’s back three and is looking increasingly comfortable there. On the defender and defensive midfield team-mate Mohamed Elneny (unpriced), the Arsenal manager told BT Sport:

“Elneny is a player who has been excellent in training from day one. He’s a player I know well, having played with him. Rob (Holding) is another one is exactly the sort of player we want at the football club. He had a difficult time but he worked really hard in training. He’s playing really well.” – Mikel Arteta

There remains one slight caveat with Arsenal’s defence moving into Gameweek 2. While they were assured at Craven Cottage, Fulham did not offer very much going forward. It was Kamara who started up front for the hosts as popular FPL asset Aleksansdar Mitrovic (£6.0m) found himself on the bench following a slight injury from international duty.

Fulham XI (4-2-3-1): Rodak; Bryan, Ream, Hector, Odoi; Reed, Cairney; Cavaleiro, Onomah (De Cordova-Reid 75′), Kebano (Anguissa 63′); Kamara (Mitrovic 63′).

Arsenal XI (3-4-3): Leno; Tierney, Gabriel, Holding; Maitland-Niles, Xhaka (Ceballos 79′), Elneny, Bellerin; Aubameyang, Lacazette (Nketiah 87′), Willian (Pepe 75′).

I always seem to start off very poorly in defence. Almost every season!

4pts + Davies is a pretty poor showing after all that tinkering 😆

For all those with knees jerking, apart from Salah and Auba (who so many had), many big hitters haven't even played yet so chill!

Personally hoping for a lacklustre attacking display from Spurs but a CS and a dazzling match from the CHE new boys 😉

I’m going to have to disagree there and ask for something along the lines of:

2-0 Spurs: Bergwijn goal, Davies goal + assist

3-0 Chelsea: Werner brace, Havertz goal + couple of assists.

Not too much to ask 😉

At least you had VVD bro. He was in my first drafts but I chickened out

TAA, Davies, KWP, Mitchell, Taylor for me.

Left Mitchell’s 6pts first on the bench

Salah looked the Sharpest I've seen him in a while, but alot of that was how much Leeds played open and expansive rather than sticking 10 behind the ball likes most teams do at Anfield.

I was planning to play WC anyway. Tailored my team for a free hit GW1.

          Front 3 looks perfect

I’d have KDB over sterling personally as less rotation

No salah which is sort of okay given fixtures but he is Salah

Mitchell and Vinagre might lose their places so a bit punty for me on a wild card

Yes will have to look at getting Pool assets back in a few weeks.

I have Chelsea cover in Werner and will look at how the midfield pans out in next few weeks. Which Manchester players would you ditch?

Depends how you want to play it. Personally I'd go for Martial as he is so cheap and likely to match any forward for value. Rash will be pushed to match either Havertz or Pulisic if Chelsea settle. Really not sure I'd want him given their fixtures are only so-so

I'd have one Pool defence anyway for now to go double if they show defensive form.

Soucek I think is a must for 0.5

This gameweek so far pretty much everyone has blanked bar modest scores for Wilson, Auba and those lucky enough to have Mitchell

So far how good your week is depends on if you have salah and captained

It’s just 1 decision - if you have salah great, if you don’t then don’t worry - it’s a long season

    1. Ser Davos
      • 5 Years

Mark and Az on Blackbox were saying how getting the captaincy wrong could result in catchup and so it will prove

Ironically, it's Auba that's prevented Salah in teams. If he was a FWD then the Salah and Mane double up would have been locked in for most

      1. TheDragon

Stream of consciousness from today's games. Would like to hear if people agree as think I was going a bit loopy by the time West Ham Mags kicked off:

Too much Arsenal rotation in attack
Only Auba is safe, but I can't ever catch his hauls. AVOID (for me personally) as I don't fancy captaining him ever (there are better options). Could be some gems in defence for the good fixtures.

    Fulham NOPE

Palace boring. Zaha may monopolise goals but wants to leave. See when Bats/Eze start together.
Guita class and often a bonus magnet. WATCHLIST for good fixture run. Still got a CS with makeshift backline.

    Southampton don't believe the hype
Full backs got into good areas (perhaps at a detriment to their CS potential)
Ings will get chances, but is he worth the price?

SALAH AT HOME = CAPTAIN. Yes 2 pens, but looked sharp.
No interest in Mane while same price as Salah given the pens.
Pool defence looks bang average atm
All corners aimed at Van Dijk
Robertson took more set pieces than Trent
Bad day for Trent - looked unfit and not with it. Spared embarrassing OG.

    Leeds will do well
Dallas/Ayling good options - will get clean sheets (once CBs are established) and attacking returns
    Harrison/Klich too
K.Phillips could tick over with share of set pieces (5m)
Jury out on Bamford - likely to share game time with Rodrigo.

West Ham and Newcastle look like SET PIECE TEAMS. I like Shelvey if he's nailed but may lose some set pieces to Fraser. Whoever gets pens could be an option as all players priced cheaply. Rotation among front 3 (reckon Wilson is most nailed).
Soucek decent value for 5m even with the fixtures - must play him every game as goals will be sporadic so easy to bench a haul.

In terms of Leeds, once Cooper returns to the starting XI and Koch has more time to bed in, we should be more solid at the back. Plus, you’re right that Ayling & Dallas will still have good attacking potential.

Harrison will get assists and create a lot of chances, whilst also generally playing far forward. Klich will likely arrive into the box later, but will also definitely get returns.

All four will prove good value over the season.

Guaita, VVD, Robbo, Ayling, Phillips, Soucek.

Some value appearing in that 5mln bracket in midfield.
TAA somewhat surprising. VVD looked like he could be a monster.

I quite like the Saints full backs. Think they’ll get a reasonable number of clean sheets as they aren’t terrible and both will get the odd assist.

You don’t fancy captaining Aubameyang against this West Ham team?

I will captain him this week in all likelihood. It's more of a personal thing with him, frustrates the hell out of me. Giving the Manc lads and Chelsea a week or 2 to get going before I deploy wildcard ahead of week 3. Don't think I'll look at Auba for a while after that - can't have em all

      Nice writeup.

Disagree on Arsenal. Willian will play every game because he can play at 10 or out wide. Good option at 8m but fixtures are about to get really ugly.

Newcastle don't look like a set piece team. Inventive from open play with ASM creating. I was very happy with Wilson's performance as an owner.

Yeah true I was just on a Jonjo Shelvey love-in by that point as noticed him taking a lot of corners.

Plenty of pace in ASM, Almiron etc to stretch teams. Feel like they'll do well in matches they go a goal up.

Most seasons I don’t like hits.... however seen people who have a lot of success over the season just pulling the trigger on minus points and nipping issues in the bud.

Anyone else tempted just to ship crap like Ings and Southampton defence off the bat? Looked dreadful today. Other notable mentions include ASM and the usual suspects

Yeh I think that would be the smartest move...

However, not sure if I want to stick with Ings or twist to
Martial as I’ve ditched the idea of sacking Salah for Bruno after the form mo showed tonight

    Early thoughts on this lot?

    McCarthy (Button)
    Justin, Walker-Peters, Alexander-Arnold, Ayling, Taylor
    Son, Aubameyang, Salah, Saint-Maximin (Burke)
    Adams, Mitrović, Werner

    1.5m in bank.

    United worth getting?

    Cheers

This was always the issue going 3-4-3 instead of 4-4-2 that can’t get to Martial.

Of the cheap strikers Wilson clearly looks the value so could go for him.

Hard to see how you get a united player in this week now (wouldn’t lose Son or Salah and you’d want Werner back GW3)
