FPL 2022/23 prices released: Sunday round-up – James and Chilwell revealed

More Fantasy Premier League (FPL) player prices for the 2022/23 season are being released and we’re bringing you live updates as and when they drop.

Chelsea were the first club to make an announcement on Sunday morning, with Reece James and Ben Chilwell among the players priced up. West Ham United and Jarrod Bowen then took centre stage at noon, with Newcastle United, Southampton and Bournemouth following on.

CHELSEA

There has been plenty of talk in the Fantasy community over the last month over whether a cheaper Ben Chilwell could ‘cover’ the more expensive Reece James in 2022/23 but what we didn’t anticipate was that FPL would price them identically.

James and Chilwell both start the new season at £6.0m, which is on the generous side for James given his attacking threat. The right-back’s patchy fitness record and the defensive turmoil that Chelsea are facing this summer, with Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen making an exit, are contributing factors to his cost but there’ll be plenty of takers at that price.

The Blues are near the top of our Season Ticker for fixture difficulty in the first seven Gameweeks, meeting only Tottenham Hotspur of last season’s top six.

Also to be filed under ‘bargain’ is Edouard Mendy (£5.0m), who like Alisson yesterday has been priced up cheaper than virtually all of us would have predicted. Mendy has fallen one million pounds from last summer and the popularity of the set-and-forget £4.5m FPL shotstopper strategy is certainly being challenged, with Ederson surely set for a lower starting price given what was happened with the goalkeepers of Liverpool and Chelsea.

Thiago Silva (£5.5m) and Cesar Azpilicueta (£5.5m) were the other Chelsea defensive assets priced up this morning.

Further up the pitch, we have seen the expected positional reclassification of Kai Havertz (£8.0m). The German is now a forward in FPL, with just over 60% of his league appearances for Chelsea last season coming when playing through the middle up front. By our rough calculations, Havertz would have lost 18 clean sheet/goal points had he been a forward in 2021/22 but earned an estimated 10 extra bonus points to partly compensate.

Mason Mount has had a minor price rise to £8.0m following his best-ever season for FPL points. The England international racked up 22 attacking returns from just 27 starts and five substitute appearances, averaging an impressive 6.1 points per start.

Callum Hudson-Odoi (£5.5m), Jorginho (£6.0m) and Christian Pulisic (£6.0m) are the other Chelsea midfielders priced up, while Timo Werner (£8.0m) remains a forward and costs the same as Havertz.

WEST HAM UNITED

Jarrod Bowen‘s (£8.5m) reward for a barnstorming 2021/22 in which he racked up 29 attacking returns and outscored all FPL midfielders bar Son Heung-min and Mohamed Salah is a price hike of £2.0m.

In all likelihood, there’ll probably be few initial takers in the right-winger, and not just because of price: West Ham face Man City, Spurs and Chelsea in the opening six Gameweeks, along with big-spending Aston Villa and a deceptively difficult Brighton side.

Michail Antonio (£7.5m) started last season on fire but ended up something of a damp squib, scoring 40 points in the first three Gameweeks but only adding a further hundred in his next 33 run-outs. FPL have consequently decided to leave him static at £7.5m, and again there will likely be limited interest come Gameweek 1.

There are some potential future bargains in defence if new signing Nayef Aguerd (£5.0m) can help tighten up a backline that kept more shut-outs than just four other teams in 2021/22.

Aaron Cresswell (£5.0m) and Vladimir Coufal (£4.5m) have offered decent attacking threat and returns over the last two FPL seasons but that sometimes hasn’t been backed up with clean sheets at the other end. FPL have thus dropped them both half a million in price.

Aguerd is highly rated and was part of a Rennes side that had the third-best defensive record in Ligue 1 over the two seasons he was at the French club.

Ben Johnson, a bargain-bin £4.0m in 2021/22, is similarly available at £4.5m this time around.

In midfield, Declan Rice (£5.0m), Said Benrahma (£6.0m), Pablo Fornals (£5.5m), Manuel Lanzini (£5.5m) and Tomas Soucek (£5.5m) have also been priced up today.

NEWCASTLE UNITED

There are some potential FPL bargains from big spenders Newcastle United, who have been splashing the Saudi cash this summer on new recruits.

The Magpies will have designs on a top 10 finish next season, with heavy investment set to continue over the next two months.

One of their recent arrivals, Nick Pope, starts life on Tyneside at £5.0m. FPL royalty Pope will hopefully be playing under better defenders than he was at Burnley but still not quite at the top-level standard where he’ll be deprived of the save points that have helped boost his appeal over the years. Still, with Chelsea’s Mendy surprisingly listed at £5.0m and Alisson only half a million more expensive, the appeal of mid-price goalkeepers outside the top four has taken a bit of a dent.

Kieran Trippier and Matt Targett also both come in at £5.0m, meanwhile. Since making his debut in Gameweek 24 last season, the corner-taking Targett ranked fifth among defenders for chances created and second for successful crosses. But it’s Trippier who is probably the slightly bigger draw, with the England international not only on a share of indirect dead-ball duties too but a whizz at direct free-kick situations, as well.

Dan Burn (£4.5m) and Fabian Schar (£4.5m) are cheaper routes into the Magpies’ defence but one of them could make way for the as yet unpriced Sven Botman.

Newcastle are second in our Season Ticker for fixture difficulty between Gameweeks 6-15 and also entertain newly promoted Nottingham Forest on the opening weekend.

Further forward, Callum Wilson stays at £7.5m despite another injury-ravaged campaign. His record at Newcastle overall is pretty elite, with 20 goals, six assists and 204 FPL points arriving in 39 starts. String that record together over the course of one campaign (minus the 39th game!) and you’re into ‘Team of the Season’ territory, although ever-present status has been a pipe dream when it comes to Wilson.

Allan Saint-Maximin has been reclassified as a midfielder and now costs £6.5m, while influential January signing Bruno Guimaraes has moved up from £5.0m to £6.0m. Joelinton (£6.0m) is also now an FPL midfielder following his redeployment in the engine room under Eddie Howe.

Joe Willock (£5.0m) and Chris Wood (£6.0m) are kindly priced but reliable game-time may well be an issue when Howe has a fully fit squad at his disposal.

SOUTHAMPTON

There’ll be precious little initial interest in FPL assets from Southampton, with the Saints facing a tough run of fixtures in the opening five Gameweeks and finishing 2021/22 in limp fashion.

Now minus Armando Broja and with Tino Livramento potentially sidelined until 2023, there aren’t too many players from Ralph Hasenhuttl’s squad on the Fantasy watchlist.

James Ward-Prowse (£6.5m) is about the pick of a mediocre bunch, with the midfielder not just reliable for starts last season (as always) but also having his best-ever season for FPL points. The penalty-taking, free-kick-scoring, corner-delivering England international has the monopoly on set plays at Southampton and has banked 15 attacking returns in each of the last two seasons.

He finished just outside of the 10 top-scoring FPL midfielders of 2021/22 but hasn’t risen in price.

Kyle Walker-Peters (£4.5m), Jan Bednarek (£4.5m), Romain Perraud (£4.5m) and Mohammed Salisu (£4.5m), part of a defence that shipped goals for fun at the back-end of last season, are all priced the same as one another, while new signing Gavin Bazunu joins the £4.5m goalkeeper club. New centre-half Armel Bella-Kotchap is, you guessed it, also at £4.5m.

Che Adams (£6.5m), Nathan Redmond (£5.5m), Stuart Armstrong (£5.0m) and Oriol Romeu (£5.0m) were also part of today’s reveal.

BOURNEMOUTH

Bournemouth’s very own penalty-taking talisman comes in at half a million cheaper than Aleksandar Mitrovic (£6.5m).

Dominic Solanke was priced up at £6.0m by FPL on Sunday evening and is unsurprisingly the Cherries’ most expensive asset.

The former Liverpool striker played a direct part in just under 50% of the goals that Scott Parker’s scored in their promotion-winning campaign – and that’s without looking at ‘Fantasy assists’ for things like shot rebounds.

FPL have applied a broad £5.5m brush stroke across anyone else of attacking note from the Bournemouth squad, with wingers David Brooks, Jaidon Anthony and Ryan Christie and forward Kieffer Moore all available this price. So too is Philip Billing, who hit double figures for both goals and assists last season in a more advanced central midfield role than we were previously accustomed to seeing him in.

Lewis Cook, a deep-lying playmaker who posed little attacking threat in the Championship, might be overpriced even at £5.0m.

At the back, we’ve got a clean sweep of £4.5m assets.

New signing Ryan Fredericks, attack-minded left-back Jordan Zemura and centre-half Lloyd Kelly are all at this price point, along with the Championship ‘Golden Glove’ winner, Mark Travers.

Is there any possibility that we won't get a 4.5 FWD spot? I didn't consider it before but I remember Camzy posting about when Fanteam launched saying that the lowest FWD pp was 5m. FPL and Fanteam are different of course but I'm looking at the likes of Gelhardt, Undav and Muniz being priced up at 5.5 and am beginning to wonder if this might actually end up happening in FPL too.

It's all possible, the gk pricing already proves they're shifting things around

I did wonder that. Last season nearly all the 4.5 forwards went out on loan to lower leagues. They just need to launch with a couple of 4.5 kids. Whether they stay or go is of lesser import.

anyone remotely likely to play at this stage won't be 4.5, like every season, so probably not but I guess it's possible (and is probably a good idea)

That's fair and I thought the same, but Gelhardt only started 5 games last season despite Bamford missing nearly the entire thing. Bamford is back and I assume Leeds will target another striker too, and yet Gelhardt is 5.5? It just feels like too big of a jump, but if the base price is 5m then it makes sense

I personally expected him to be 5.5 so maybe we just have different starting points on this one, seems fine to me

The 4.5m FWDs from last season weren't viable until late in the season, and even then, barely.

Tbare may be a couple but won't be that viable again.

Maybe they are avoiding fodder i.e. no 4.5m fwds/mids or 4.0m defenders/GKs? To try and ensure people have full playing 15 teams

Interesting idea, but they've always had 4m keepers/defenders, 4.5 midfielders and 4.5 forwards

Like I keep reiterating, it's part of their "formula"

It's selective of course but we've seen 4m defs and 4.5 mids so far for players you'd expect would be that price. But with those forwards I can't fathom them being more than 5m.

no, but we've seen a 4m defender. It could be true what you're saying for sure and you have me intrigued, but it doesn't look to be shaping up that way

Formations and therefore teams will vary wildly as it stands.

more scope for 4.5 mids that will start purely because there are more of them

As ever you will probably need to pop up to 5.5 mill up top for a starter, but as the 11th player in your team that ain’t so bad, great security and can be rotated with the 4.5 mids & defenders anyway

I’m sure they will. There will be young players who barely get minutes who need to be priced. No one is interested in their price reveals as we probably have less awareness of who they are. Gelhardt showed good promise last season so was always going to be 5.0 or 5.5.

I think it’s reasonable to expect 4.5 fwds, but it’s also reasonable to expect that none of them will see any meaningful game time. So 4-5-1 / 5-4-1 formations can expect to have only 1 playable outfield sub

People lathering themselves up over Mendy's price perhaps need to consider this. Chelsea's defence was crap last season, Mendy averaged only 3.8ppg (less than Raya who we think will be 4.5m) and they have now lost their best defender who to my knowledge hasn't been replaced.

I owned Mendy for a large part of last season and he was poor for the most part.

If anything, it's looking likely that the Chelsea defence will be weaker this season. I'd sooner spend the extra 0.5m for Allison or get someone like Sa or Ramsdale for the same price or just get a budget keeper.

Bowen possibly, but KDB and Bamford's prices are fair. The latter managed 25 returns in 38 matches before being impacted by injury last season, I don't think his price should be lower than 7.5m.

There is a huge quality regression in being supplied by Raphina and being supplied by Dan James throughout a season, I can't see him going near those numbers again. Toney at 0.5 cheaper should outscore him

Given 5 at the back is a viable formation actual prem teams play zero chance we will only have 4.

Also same as no teams plays four pure forwards

Given a lot of wingers are classed as mids I almost think 2-5-6-2 would be more likely as sometimes wingers/cams get played up top.

          Neither will happen though

With the arrival of the 5 subs rule and the amount of high-intensity pressing many teams have adopted (in particular for wing backs) could this close the points gap we've seen between players like Trent, Robertson and James to their centre half teammates who may be less prone to rotation?

After the £6.5m signing of Calvin Ramsay and Joe Gomez who has also filled in at right back before - including as a busy winter schedule with the World Cup in Qatar - don't count on Trent not being susceptible to rotation too.

Yes - because some may be subbed before the 60 minute mark, and can still lose clean sheet points. Centre halves like Van Dijk, Dias and Laporte also chip in the odd few goals throughout the season and make up more through BPS.

You can complain about players being cheap and that making it ‘to easy’ to build your team

But cheapening players also means more variety for example if all the gks are 5 max except ederson and Allison you will see a whole spread of picks instead of having 30% of people on Sanchez game week 1

Opening 5 fixtures only one 'difficult' fixture with Liverpool away to Man Utd (although I'd argue Chelsea at home to Spurs is difficult).

I think that defence scores massive points. Something like 15 clean-sheets and 10 attack returns between them.

depends on the price of Son.
Either 541 with son, or 532 with Jesus.
Other players Diaz, Grealish, Rashford / Martinelli and Haaland (rest £4.5s ).

Son would have to be £11.0 for this to work so highly unlikely.

          And one of Chilwell/James>Tomi

What do you all think of Leicester assets? Anyone feel they will have a good year with no Europe games?

Maddison ended last season strongly so he my no.1 option

Nice two home games to start but a few tough away games so may be worth bringing in later

haven't made a draft without Maddison yet, undecided yet on Vardy he was gold when i owned him last season, but his age injury record and potential high price are a concern this year

I think age and injury record might be a concern esp with 5 subs.. however only one game a week. I do feel loke Maddison is going to play every game and will be cheaper

They need to bring in a defender who can prevent goals from set pieces.

We most certainly do - there is no way I am having one of our defenders, even though Justin and Castagne are very good.

          Depends on Son's price.

If I can go Son/Sterling over Salah/8.0, then I might go for it. Doubt it's affordable though.

I'm thinking exactly the opposite, looking at salah as the only 10m+ and permacap for his 200+ then soread the rest around, can get a very, very solid looking team but does mean taking a wait and see on haaland, which may not be bad given peps penchant for rotation

Difficult to fit them in without weakening too much elsewhere, best I've come up with is

          Ederson
          TAA, James, Cash, White, Jonny
Son (c), Salah, Saka, Neto (4.5m)
          Haaland (4.5m, 4.5m)

        Haaland essential?

I remember 2 seasons ago Werner was ‘essential’ for GW1 and that was at best a complete disaster.

Wait and see or Haaland from GW1?

I was very confident Werner wouldn't be anything close to essential and people lol'ed at me for a few weeks on here, Haaland feels very different to that though; although a slow start wouldn't be a complete surprise - still an option to go without with the fullbacks/attacking midfielders attractively priced

He's playing in a new country under a new manager. So just wait it out and see how he copes. The cheap defence will provide us with more flexibility in attack related transfers.

What's the alternative? Start with Kane for his easy first match, and then transfer Mr H. in immediately? It could cost you but it might be an option.

Starting to think he isnt as essential as i thought if it allows you to have a better squad elsewhere.

I mean, what kind of figures are we expecting him to get?

He needs to be Aguero levels and even then you could arguably go for someone cheaper as striker and get more points elsewhere

          No right or wrong answer
